Chapter 27: In Her Own Words

A hollow look remained in the princess’ large eyes—a short, grey distance between life and death. As Mena and Maggie waited breathlessly, a sorrow contorted Maggie’s face. An eternity seemed to pass them in the void, and Plumerella wasn’t waking up. “N-n-no,” Maggie stammered, and she floated closer and closer to the lifeless princess.

“Plumy, I..I’m…” Maggie reached out towards the princess’ face to touch it one last time. “I’m…”

“The biggest imbecile in the whole kingdom?”

A white glove reached out and slapped Maggie across the face. Dazed, the former Ghost Writer rubbed her red cheek. Life had returned to the princess’ eyes and now, they were filled with fury.

“Maggie…” Plumerella said with both hands placed firmly on her hips. “You are indeed the most idiotic, stupid, daft, and hardheaded imbecile in the whole kingdom.”

“B-but why?” Maggie asked, shaking her head in disbelief as Mena floated silently watching them. “Is it because I drained the kingdom of all its color?”

“No,” the princess responded and did not elaborate.

“Because I sealed you in a tower away from everyone else?”

“No…” the princess responded again.

“Because…I killed Chad and your father?”

Plumerella covered her eyes with her hand and shook her head. “As hard as that is to move past…no.”

“Then what?” Maggie implored her former friend.

“Because,” Plumerella said in a matter-of-fact tone. “Once you died, you made no effort to reach out to me. Instead, you chose to take revenge upon our world.”

Maggie did a double take and floated backwards. “But you…you went over to Chad almost immediately.”

“He reached out to me while I was grieving,” Plumerella said honestly. “I had no idea he had a hand in your execution.”

Maggie’s head sunk low. “I guess you’re right, Plumy. I am an imbecile. I was a fool to do everything I did. To have my revenge before anything else. To not even send a sign to you or my father that my soul lived on. That is truly foolish of me.”

The princess placed a white glove on Maggie’s shoulder, causing the pigmalian’s daughter to look up in shock. “You are an imbecile, I agree,” Plumerella said, but instead of a scowl, a warm smile adorned her face. “But at least you admitted it. Something the wickedest people in this world would never admit. “

“But…” Maggie stumbled over her words again.

“Maggie,” Plumerella duly responded. “You truly gave me the most splendidful night. And I was hoping it would continue into the morning. I had never met a girl like you before. One who was so shy, but thoughtful all the same.”

“Was I?” Maggie asked, giving the princess her full attention.

“You were,” the princess responded and leaned in close to her ear. “I really liked you and if our time wasn’t so cut short…who knows what could have happened between us.”

Plumerella said and embraced her first friend. "I really liked your company.”

A golden, heavenly light shone from inside of Maggie’s chest. Mena and the princess floated back as a pair of velvet white wings appeared behind Maggie. “W-what’s happening?”

The Good Fairy appeared beside Mena and Plumerella. Maggie, still astounded, floated upwards towards the ether. “You’re moving on,” the Fairy said gently. “It seems that the unfinished business in your heart has closed.”

“I do feel lighter,” Maggie responded with a sigh. “Much lighter.”

Tears ran down the cheeks of all three girls. Even Mena, who had known Plumerella and Maggie briefly was moved to sadness by their tale. But she was glad she could help them all the same.

“Please,” Maggie pleaded. “Tell my dad, thank you for everything, and that I love him deeply.”

“We will,” Mena and Plumerella responded as they looked up at the now ascending ghost of Maggie.

“Thank you,” Maggie said, folding her hands together. “I have so much I want to say, but I think I’ll rest now. Plumy…I love you.”

“I love you too,” the Princess wailed suddenly, dabbing her eyes with a pink hanky.

And with those words, the restless soul of the Ghost Writer finally came to rest.
