Chapter 3: The Phantom’s Wrath
Haruto and Marise fought valiantly against the large phantom monster, but its strength was overwhelming. With a single attack, it could destroy the classroom, sending debris flying everywhere. Haruto’s fighting style was unsuitable against such a powerful foe, and he could only use his Phantom Puff and Shadow Vine abilities.
The battle began with a deafening roar from the large phantom monster, its skeletal wings unfurling as it charged at Haruto and Marise. Haruto quickly summoned his Phantom Puff, a burst of energy that momentarily blinded the monster, giving them a brief respite. Marise used this opportunity to launch a series of precise strikes with her dual blades, aiming for the monster’s joints and weak spots.
However, the monster’s hide was tough, and Marise’s attacks barely left a scratch. The monster retaliated with a powerful swipe of its claw, sending Marise crashing into a wall. Haruto’s heart raced as he saw his friend in danger. He quickly used his Shadow Vine ability, summoning dark tendrils from the ground to entangle the monster’s legs and slow its movements.
The monster roared in frustration, its eyes glowing with malevolent energy. With a single, powerful jerk, it broke free from the Shadow Vines and lunged at Haruto. Haruto barely managed to dodge, rolling to the side as the monster’s claws gouged deep furrows into the ground where he had been standing.
Marise struggled to her feet, her vision blurry from the impact. She saw Haruto in danger and pushed through the pain, charging at the monster with renewed determination. She leaped into the air, aiming for the monster’s head, but the creature was too fast. It swatted her away like a fly, sending her sprawling across the floor.
Haruto’s mind raced as he tried to think of a strategy. His Phantom Puff and Shadow Vine abilities were not enough to deal significant damage to the monster. He needed to find a way to buy more time. He summoned another Phantom Puff, creating a blinding flash of light that disoriented the monster momentarily.
“Marise-senpai, we need to retreat!” Haruto shouted, his voice strained with urgency.
Marise nodded, her breath coming in ragged gasps. “Agreed. We can’t keep this up.”
They ran through the school, dodging attacks, until they ended up on the football field. Exhausted and unsure of what to do next, they faced the daunting task of fighting both the level E phantom monsters, the Fishbone Spawns, and the unknown large phantom monster. Marise was at her limit, her energy nearly depleted.
The large phantom monster protected the Fishbone Spawns, allowing them to spawn infinitely. It stood as a towering guardian, its skeletal wings spread wide, casting a dark shadow over the field. The Fishbone Spawns, small and agile, swarmed around it, their numbers growing with each passing second. Every time one was defeated, another would emerge from the shadows, ready to take its place.
The monster’s presence seemed to invigorate the Fishbone Spawns, making them more aggressive and coordinated. It was as if the monster was channeling its energy into them, creating an endless cycle of spawning and attacking. Haruto and Marise found themselves constantly on the defensive, unable to gain any ground.

Haruto’s Phantom Puff and Shadow Vine abilities were stretched to their limits. He used the Phantom Puff to create blinding flashes of light, trying to disorient the Fishbone Spawns, but they quickly adapted, their attacks becoming more precise. The Shadow Vines, which he summoned to entangle and slow the spawns, were repeatedly shredded by the relentless onslaught.
Marise fought with all her might, her dual blades a blur of motion as she cut down spawn after spawn. But for every one she defeated, two more seemed to take its place. Her energy was waning, and she knew they couldn’t keep this up much longer.
The large phantom monster watched over the battlefield with a malevolent intelligence, its eyes glowing with a sinister light. It seemed to take pleasure in their struggle, its skeletal grin widening with each passing moment. It knew that as long as it stood, the Fishbone Spawns would continue to multiply, overwhelming Haruto and Marise with sheer numbers.
Haruto glanced at Marise, his breath coming in ragged gasps. “Marise-senpai, what do we do now? We’re outnumbered and outmatched.”
Marise wiped the sweat from her brow, her eyes narrowing as she assessed the situation. “We need to think strategically. We can’t keep fighting like this; we’ll be overwhelmed.”
The large phantom monster let out a bone-chilling roar, its skeletal wings spreading wide as it advanced. The Fishbone Spawns swarmed around it, their numbers growing with each passing second.
Haruto’s voice trembled slightly. “I can barely keep up with these smaller ones. How are we supposed to handle that thing?”
Marise’s mind raced. “Damn, I think I need to eat Toru-sensei’s fingernail.”
Haruto blinked in confusion. “Toru-sensei’s what?”
“You heard me,” Marise replied, her voice strained but determined. She quickly explained Toru Suretsu’s ability. “Toru-sensei has a unique technique. If anyone consumes any part of his body, even something as small as a fingernail, he can possess them. This means he can control their body and use their techniques. However, while he’s possessing someone, he can only use their abilities, not his own. But he can still channel his phantom energy through them, making him incredibly versatile and unpredictable.”
Haruto’s eyes widened in realization. “So, if you eat his fingernail, Toru-sensei can possess you and use your body to fight?”
Marise nodded, her expression serious. “Exactly. But I don’t want to do it—it’s gross and…,” she hesitated, her cheeks flushing slightly.
“And?” Haruto prompted, his curiosity piqued despite the dire situation.
“What woman wants a man to possess her body?” Marise admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
Haruto nodded in agreement, understanding her reluctance. “Yeah, that does sound pretty weird. If that’s the case, please let me eat it…”
Marise sighed, her resolve hardening. “Okay… be ready.”
Just as Marise was about to throw the fingernail to him, one of the Fishbone Spawns suddenly snatched it out of the air and swallowed it. Both of them stared in shock.
The Fishbone Spawn fell silent, then suddenly spoke, “Where am I?” It looked around, confused, and then saw Marise. “Why are you here, Marise? I thought you ate my finger. So who ate my finger… a new student?”
Haruto, still in disbelief, replied, “No, Toru-sensei.”
Realizing what had happened, Toru Suretsu, now possessing the Fishbone Spawn, looked at his new form. “Well, this is unexpected.”
Marise, regaining her composure, said, “We’ll leave this battle to you, Toru-sensei.”
Toru, adjusting to his new body, grinned. “Don’t worry, I’ll handle this. You two take a breather.”
Haruto let out a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness. I thought we were done for.”
Marise nodded, her eyes still on the battlefield. “Let’s not waste this chance. We need to be ready to support Toru-sensei if he needs it.”
Haruto’s determination returned. “Right. Let’s stay sharp.”
