Book 1-IV: The Welcome Party

I landed with a loud thud on a bed that was so dusty I was drowning in it. I coughed and quickly picked myself up from the bed. I was in a large room, I didn't know that spawning was random, I expected to be dropped in some large starter city or the middle of a village, instead I'm....where the heck am I again?

[Land Owner system unlocked! Please name your Manor and surrounding lands]

Oh I guess this is the manor I was given, and seeing how this bedroom was extremely large I would say it's a nice piece of architecture. Then I noticed the cracks in the wall, the cobwebs, the dust hanging off furniture that looked as if it was a century old and the broken chandelier in the middle of the floor. It was a scam! Romantic scammed me, but there wasn't much I could do about it anyways. I'd just name the Manor and done with it.

[Glorious has been set as the name of the Manor! Surrounding Lands have been Named Glory Vault! The village of New Ire now sits on a piece of your territory. Would you like to disband the village? Or rename it?]

"Leave it as it is."

[System Announcement! Player Az-Rael has become the landlord of Glory's Vault. All home, establishment and Business owners would be required to pay rent in order to occupy his land]

Well that was unexpected but not unwelcomed.

Once you own a house in Path Of Divinity such options for management would be open to you. Owning land is hard, much less one that's 10 Hectares in size, for a guild that would be understandable as they would have support from both in-game and out of it to help them manage as most guilds with land have sponsors and investors.

There has never been a person to own a land all on their own especially one this size with a village on it. There was much I didn't know and getting this place up and running would cost a significant amount of money and manpower.

Funny enough without money I can't get the manpower I need and without man power I can't generate the money, I would probably have to sink in all 10,000 gold coins I just received to get even my manor up to standard, plus I still have to get a nanny and guard for Leon. Either way this was the land's stat sheet, I need to see mine.

So I started out as level 0, which was fine by me but now that I've seen all this.... What am I supposed to do next. I definitely have to hurry up and level as that's what's really important. From what I've seen of the game over the time it's been online, those people who own properties or land have to deal with demon infestation and invasion at least two to three times a month. In order to face that I have to get stronger, so it would be better if.

*Craaaash!*

"What the hell was that?"

I turned to look at the door, apart from the room I was in, I had no idea what the rest of the Manor looked like, so I had no idea what exactly to expect. I don't have an inventory, there was no such thing in this game, you carried and moved things the old fashioned way. But at least I had a weapon as I pulled out the sword I had spawned with.

It was a short sword, I didn't think it was going to be enough, it was quite short and I would have preferred something with a little more reach, perhaps a spear or a longsword would have been better. I took a deep breath and walked towards the door, ready to face whatever was making that racket when the door blasted backwards and straight into my face.

[-2 HP]

The door didn't land on me as it slid over my form, bruising the tip of my nose as my entire body seemed to ache something fierce. I looked up in time to see an imp, all purple skinned, with a mini pitchfork, and a partner in similar get up. Two imps, in my bedroom, just minutes after I spawned.... The devil was keeping to his words.

[Quest!: You're Manor is under attack by a Fire Team of demonic imps and their mystery leader. Defeat them all| Rewards: 200 exp, + 5 path points]

Maybe I was being paranoid about them being sent by the devil, but honestly who wouldn't be a bit scared when the devil himself throws a threat your way. God hasn't exactly had the best track record in keeping his believers from harm, but then again like every believer it was all part of the divine plan. It didn't matter though, outside of this game I wasn't an Atheist, I believed in God though I took a more cynical view to religion than most. God was watching and he will give me victory.

[An act of Faith has been shown! Faith +2]

"Angel! Reeks of weakness!"

"We must kill! Kill for the lord of hell! Kill!"

I raised an eyebrow as the first Imp rushed towards me, while the other swung it's pitchfork, sending a ball of darkness hurtling in my direction. I bent down to dodge as the ball went over my head, only for the other imp to stab his pitchfork into my shoulder. It didn't just hurt, it fucking burned, but I just couldn't bring myself to cry out in pain, it was almost as if I was reacting to the pain a whole lot slower than the norm.

[-5hp]

"Scream for me Angel!" I looked up at the floating demon and answered with a tone so dull is shocked me.

"No!" And then I stabbed the imp in the throat, placing it in the direction of it's comrade who proceeded to shoot another ball of darkness in my direction. I ran towards it, pulling its now deceased friend in front of me, allowing the dead body to take the hit as I sent the shortsword stabbing forwards, skewering the final imp, and ignoring it's bulging terrified eyes.

"No!"

I felt weird, it didn't seem like I had just killed a monster or a virtual generated mob. The look in it's eyes, that pure unfiltered look of terror as it's life faded into nothingness. That's not something you could replicate.

I didn't have time to waste, I was injured and almost out of HP, and I'd rather not have to waste one of my resurrection points. So the two extra stat point went straight into my vitality stat. Then 10 Path points went straight into the path of Zion.

Knowledge filled my head, the method to utilize my essence for the skill Divine strike had seemingly been downloaded into my brain, giving me a light headed feeling that only lasted for a moment. And that was all of the time I had to myself when another imp barreled into the room, it's pitchfork raised high as it let out a scream whilst lobbing a ball of red flames towards me.

I raised the short sword to block, but there really wasn't much protection the blade could offer, as the fire ball skill exploded on the blade, heating it up rapidly as splash damage from the impact fell on top of me.

[-2HP]

Unlike the other two, my new friend wanted to keep his distance, but that was not a part of my agenda as I raised a dust cover chair and threw it in the direction of the flying imp. It wasn't much for distractions, but as distractions go, it was enough to get me close enough. The imp blasted the chair apart, filling the sir with rubble, dust and wood chips, a development we both didn't forsee and an amateur like me didn't plan for.

But there was no where else to go but forwards, so I did, raising the short sword over my head to bring it crashing down on the head of the Imp. Energy coursed through me, surging from my heart rapidly traveling across my entire body until it pooled at my hands and slowly seeped into the short sword with a little amount of resistance.

[Divine Strike!]

The short sword glowed with a small golden white light as it literally cleaved the Imp in twain. Both Halves slipping to the side to fall in front of my feet with a wet thud, blackish red blood slowly spreading out from it's remains.

[You Have Slain One Lesser Demonic Imp +150exp]

I was breathing hard as I looked around, quickly taking a few steps backwards as I waited for another Imp to come and finish the job. The quest had said it was a fireteam, I knew a fireteam had to have at least five members including their commanding officer, so I still had to deal with two more enemies. And just as I expected they didn't disappoint.

One more imp came through the door, and following close behind it was what looked like a goblin, or rather it wasn't a goblin, just a larger version of the imps that had been attacking me. It came up to my waist as opposed to the imps that came up to me knee, it was just as purple as the rest, but it had a streak of red running down the left side of it's face. Wether or not that was war paint or just some sort of racial identification I couldn't tell, all I know right now was that my life was still in danger.

I rolled to the left, putting the bed between me and the imps as the smaller one lobbed another ball of flames in my direction. It went directly over my head while then larger imp leveled what was most definitely a blunderbuss in my direction and fired. I ducked down thinking the bed that was between me and them would be enough to protect me from the shot.... Oh how wrong I was.

*Boom!*

The concussive wave released from the shot blasted the bed smithereens and threw me against the wall. I cried out in shock and pain, but I wasn't wholly alone in my suffering as the smaller imp had also been caught in the blast radius. It seems the larger one did not have any sense of camaraderie or loyalty, I was it's target and it would stop at nothing until it brings me down, regardless of who or what was in it's way.

By some miracle I still had my sword held tightly in my hand, honestly I had no idea how to use the damn thing, but ultimately it was the only thing that I could rely on to save my life right now. I picked myself up from the ground, the blunderbuss was smoking hot at the moment and the larger imp was juggling it from one hand to the other trying to find a way to hold it without Burning itself, it was distracted and in a fight that was a very terrible mistake to make. I rushed at it, yelling as I did so, it raised it's head and flung a fireball straight at my chest, blasting my backwards against the wall again.

[-4HP] [-1HP]

At the rate I was going, I would end up dead soon enough. My health was in the red once again, but even with all of that sitting still and dying was not an option. So I threw the sword at the larger imp. Admittedly that was not my best work or my best moment, but at this point I had no other option available to me and I'm just hoping God blesses my aim and makes it true.... Or not.

The shirt sword hit the imp hilt first, causing it to let out a wild screech of pain as it backpedalled away and out through t he doorway, clutching it's ruined nose as it cried. These things were weird, they were like rabid children.... Demons none the less but rabid. I had bought myself enough time to look at the smaller imp that was slowly getting back up to it's feet, no matter what, the damn thing should remain down. So I ran towards it and jumped up, making sure I placed all my weight on my right foot as I curb stomped it's face into the floor, and perhaps I understimated my new strength as it's head burst apart like a melon, while it died with mewling sound.

It was not as if I felt any stronger, but be that as it may I trusted my chances of survival now a lot more than I did a few moments ago. I rushed towards the entrance of the bedroom, just in time to see the larger imp returning, with his blunderbuss back in his hand. I leaped for the startled spawn of hell, slamming my larger bulk into its own as my hand wrapped around the blunderbuss and we both crashed to the ground with it's body serving as a cushion for mine.

It cried out in pain and even more so when I dropped my head down on its nose hard, headbutting it to the point we both was stars. I wrestled the Blunderbuss from it's hand and clocked it at the side of it's head with the butt of it. It screeched in pain and swiped at my chest with sharp claws, before holding on to the injured area like a baby.

I didn't stop though as I raised the Blunderbuss up and brought it down on its face with a sickening thud, then I did it again, and again, and again. Pounding away at it whilst screaming myself hoarse. My entire body was wracked with pain, I might have a health Guage but I still felt all of the pain, every last one of it, and honestly it didn't feel good. It took the chime of a notification for me to finally stop as I took a look at the mess I had made.

I promptly turned to the side and vomited my breakfast, which was weird as I was in a game and my avatar should not have any sort of food in it's stomach, but it didn't matter I was still a mess.
