December 21, 2056.
A red sleek looking Porsche drove down the highway at a terrifying speed cutting and swerving through lanes while overtaking cars and narrowly avoiding close scrapes or smashes. In its wake were petrified and angry drivers screaming through their windows at the mad driver. The Porsche drove on seemingly gaining more speed than before as it breezed through the streets.
The driver whooped with exhilaration. Bursts of excitement rushing through their body as they steered professionally through the streets at a dangerous speed. Clear brown wide eyes made it clear there was a lack of fear. Instead it showed brimming confidence, and amusement within them making it clear that this wasn't their first joy ride.
The red Porsche finally braked sharply joining the throng of cars caught in the jam on the 4th interstate. Annoyed the driver rolled down the peeking out. The hot summer wind roughly blew onto their face messing up the long blonde hair and setting thin lips in a firm line as their frustration lit.
Honks and shouts resounded around as fellow drivers kept began getting annoyed at the wait. Several alighted from their cars and craned their necks to find the cause of the delay. It was clear this jam had been ongoing for longer than ws nornal. The 4th interstate highway as it was called was usually used due to its vast space and six-man lane on each side. Infact a traffic jam on this particular road was unheard of and as such reason enough for most throngs of car owners to use it whenever they were headed in a specific direction that the 4th interstate could lead them to.
Cara groaned. Taking her head back in she pushed open her door and alighted from the car. Her eyes made a glance at the digital watch strapped to her left wrist where the blue light showed her that she was almost late to pick up the twins. Casting a glance about she smiled a bit then tapping her finger against the tip of her nose she grinned.
Hanging out with her friends after finally getting her admission into the renowned Albatross schools for her art degree had clouded her mind leading to almost forgetting the time for the twins' pickup. Almost, being the keyword here. Not that it mattered to the little devils as she knew they would definitely blackmail some notes from her if she got there later than she should have.
At this moment though she couldn't do anything about it already having gotten the perfect excuse, hence her smile. Making yet another glance about and seeing nothing interesting going on she slumped back into the driver's seat deciding to wait for the eventual movement of traffic in there.
Half an hour passed before the cars finally began a slow trickle to move. Realizing that maybe she would be stuck in this jam for a while she decided to call her mum and inform her about picking up the twins.
The dial tone though kept beeping and then ended the call automatically. Trying again and again, frustration seeped into her before she remembered to call her dad instead. Granted she dreaded the scolding that might ensue even before he beard any of her excuses but the little devils were still her siblings. The same beep of the dial tone informed her that yet again the call had already been disconnected. It took several attempts for her to realize something was off. Then more attempts at different calls put her in a daze.
'What was going on.'
Looking to her right she spotted a silver Acura by the other lane silently waiting like her for them to begin moving. Though the trickle of the cars had begun it hadn't yet gotten to them. So they were still stuck there moping around.
The silver Acura's window was rolled down revealing the driver within. A fair-skinned, jet black hair and green-eyed boy sat behind the wheel. His entire focus was on the phone in his hand as he stared at it almost disbelievingly for some reason. Flicking through the screen for a minute before raising the device to his ear Cara watched an expectant expression growing on her face.
The boy fumed for some more minutes. before he looked up directly linking green eyes with brown ones. She sent a small wave in his direction before she pointed to her phone and spoke.
"Not working?" Her question simple enough, failed to receive an answer as the ground shook at that moment.
Rrrrnng.
A loud vibration rattled through. Cara was unsure of the feeling. The ground shook again as did the air and surroundings. Then a shrill resounded as she felt the oxygen leave her body almost like it was sucked out of her in a go.
Regaining her breathing the next minute after battling for air her eyes locked on the boy who looked back at her. The hint of fear, curiosity, and uncertainty was visible on both faces.
'At least he felt it too, which means I didn't imagine it' she thought
Then the floor quaked again. It was subtle this time but with the already passed vibration, she could already note everything. The next quake though was less subtle but still weak.
But the next quake after it came with a vengeance. The street split as cracks formed on the asphalt and ran parallel dividing the roads amongst themselves. The crack ran the entire length weaving beneath cars and trucks till it ran into the distance.
Cara's eyes went back to the green-eyed boy who was staring rather wide-eyed at the ground his mind seemingly trying to process the crack on the floor. But the crack on the floor was never an issue. Infact if they had an idea of what would be coming next the crack would have been as important as a single leaf to a forest.
The next quake was less of a quake and more of a grand explosion of earth. The ground ripped apart like an invisible arm grabbed hold of it and tore it aside. The 4th interstate groaned as it shook and then shuddered as several beams and metal cranes creaked.
A loud bang rang out from everywhere and nowhere and then there was silence. The light literally disappeared from the world as the sun hanging in the sky vanished without any sign. The world shuddered like a body in its last death throes.
Then an explosion came with a bright golden and reddish glow like a wave spreading all over the world in a blinding flash that tore the earth apart . It was like a hot knife through butter. Several hot knives through one butter.
Eyes shut, body bent low within the car as she shuddered in terror mind running in different places unable to focus on anything even as she braced herself while the world around her literally came crashing. With vision gone, the sight before her was unknown only the loud breaking and cracking sounds of stone and groans of metal registered in her ears. Screams from all over piercing through the noise of destruction.
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
Beneath far into the earth's core an alarming sight was occurring. The crusts were shattering and shifting, tectonic plates moving apart and around in split seconds. Huge geysers of magma sprung up out of the grounds burning and destroying everything in its path going as far as reaching the surface to spill out.
Even the weather and the sea refused to give respite as the oceans and seas rose above cities while the clouds churned and formed in seeming whirlpools before descending like avatars of death forming tornadoes and hurricanes, mini cyclones, and raging storms all over.
In every part of the world, natural disasters of different kinds on larger scales than humans had ever perceived wrecked the world. Battering the beautiful earth on every part of it without letup.
Her door was suddenly pulled open and an arm grabbed at her shoulder tugging her back to the opening. Her screams joined the chorus of shouts ringing about as she turned to face the invader while simultaneously shifting back into the safety of her car. The light was back just not from the sun. It was like the weather lighted up the environment with blazing bonfires here and there and a bit of bright sky yet no sun. It was eerie
Green eyes that were barely visible within the thundering rain that had suddenly begun peered at her an arm extended while beckoning at her to move hurriedly.
"We can't stay here.!". the boy shouted his voice almost blown away by the strong wind now slamming into them. Adamantly she shook her head believing in the safety of her car.
"Just look. You think you'll be safe here from that?" the boy hurriedly asked now pointing backward. Her gaze following his finger, she furrowed her brows as the rain struck her rear windshield blurring the outside constantly. But even within the thundering rain, she could make out the slight form of a towering form heading straight at them.
"What... is that?" she muttered half dazed at the size of the monstrosity and half shocked while her fear and panic began increasing exponentially. Her focus locked on the towering shape she yelped in added panic when the passenger door she had scurried to suddenly opened and two arms grabbed her and pulled her out even as she trashed.
"Let's go" the boy shouted again and dragged her after him as he turned forward and fled her phone and car forgotten. Through the rain, she saw the last form of the approaching menace.
Winds rolled up churning and rolling around a central space as the entire shape moved haphazardly but still forward. Things in its path quickly sucked up only to shatter into debris on reaching its outer ring of wind.
It's very top ascended into the skies connecting with the dark clouds that were spotted there being highlighted constantly by the various lightning strikes that occurred at intervals.
Both ran up the highway, their sights set on the very edge. The interstate was a long contraption that hung meters above the other curving streets held up by beams. Beams that finally cracked and shattered under the force of the winds and the shifting earth below it.
Risking a glance back her eyes widened as she watched her red Porsche disappear into the ground as the road beneath it caved. The silver Acura of the green-eyed boy was lifted and sucked into the whirling winds of the enraged tornado behind it. It never made it there though a thick pole slamming into the side and pitching the entire car to the side and over the interstate.
An explosion rocked the bridge.
The crack on the road blossomed and increased stretching wide as other cracks joined it creating spidery cracks where pieces of the road fell taking vehicles down with them.
"Faster!" She shouted turning and increasing her speed. The green-eyed boy surprised by her sudden change in behavior took a look back and caught sight of the terrifying event happening. In a spike of panic, he increased his speed as much as he could possibly do. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, depending on who's perspective, the other passengers and people on the road already began noticing the falling road as well as the approaching tornado. The rain already letting up as the tornado slowly began entering view.
First, there were few, then a lot, then many and soon enough finding space to run became difficult. People hit others out of their way, pulled others down and even stepped on those already fallen. It was pure chaos in just a few minutes.
They'd barely gotten past the edge when with a huge grumble and boom like an angry crack of thunder the road finally gave disappearing down into the floor below and taking those people and everything on it down with it as people gathered on the edge of the interstate to watch the dropping road.
The grumble beneath them reminded them of the still approaching tornado and the quakes still happening.
"It's still not safe here we have to find high ground." the boy reminded looking around his palm clasped firmly on her wrist without letting go. Turning he walked forward pulling Cara along. Both, alongside a few many others ran hurriedly ignoring the quakes and trembles that occurred rapidly around them as they raced for the city. Fear and confusion were etched into everyone.
Whatever was happening had cut off communications not just on a personal scale but globally. Even the government with all its reach couldn't contact anything or anyone. It was like something had looked at the world and pressed off. Shutting them down without a care.
In events like this government priorities were always to make sure there was never mass hysteria or panic. But with the lack of communication outlets, everything was dead.
A crack of lightning flashed in the sky before descending and striking about. Soon there were flames burning in several buildings as the lightning strikes refused to let up. Explosions occurred rampantly as various areas went ablaze or caved in on themselves. Buildings crumbled no matter what material they were made of. Whether metal, glass, wood, or stone. Everything and anything unlucky to stand in the way of nature's onslaught fell to ruins.
By the time Cara and the boy reached the center of the city all was entirely almost gone.
Heaps of burning structures that towered up smoldered in flames as they watched. Roads and parts of the ground were totally gone leaving just spaces that were either dark or red with flame and magma.
People began scattering about, different thoughts in their heads as they ran in different directions. Family, loved ones, safety, and survival were paramount in all their heads. No one had the time to think about others or strangers in the meantime as everyone scattered about. The same thought rose in Cara's head and the boy's as both simultaneously moved apart in different directions only to come crashing back into each other.
'Huh' Looking up at the black-haired guy she blinked trying to get the streaming rainwater out of her vision as she looked at him.
"I'm headed that way, you?" he asked politely a bit of impatience in his eyes as he gazed at her. Without a word a numb state in her head she just pointed down a lane she recognized. Nodding, the boy looked at the spot his palm held to her wrist pondering why he refused to let go even after confirming she was headed in a different path.
It was only when she pulled a bit to take back her hand that he finally released his palm unlocking the palm prison. Stepping back subconsciously she made a glance about noting that they were the only ones left standing there.
"Th...thank you" she croaked out her heart still beating harshly in her ribcage. Watching as the boy nodded she turned and quickly without a glance back ran for the road. Standing there for a while his eyes locked on his palm after she disappeared down a corner he shrugged turning and bolting down another lane mind fixed on his destination. The thoughts of a certain girl were pushed away.
It took longer than Cara thought possible to maneuver through the destruction that was wrecked on the city, destruction that was still ongoing even though it had calmed down a bit. People ran across the street from time to time racing in different directions just like helpless chicks.
Ignoring them her mind was focused on her destination a subtle prayer in her mind that the twins were okay. Her black shirt sticking to her body gave her a discomfort that she ignored. Her blue jeans were now thoroughly soaked through and still getting wet as she splashed through various puddles with her boots. Even the wind could not move her now damp hair as it stuck firmly to her neck and back.
She didn't know how long she ran stopping only when she got to the final street. Clement Avenue was broad due to the school opposite one side of a grand park. The school where her two little siblings attended.
Hurrying inside while panting and ignoring the chill in her bones from all the water soaked on her and the still-falling rain she walked into the compound eyes searching about as her heart pounded.
'Please be fine. Please be fine.' she chanted in her head as she got close. Even the school had not escaped the destruction wrecked, a fact that she noted from a falling part of the fence that boomed. Her mind was in a wreck of panic as she noted the few corpses of students and adults that lay about in the rain. Victims that had somehow gotten caught in an event or two.
One such body was blackened beyond recognition, another was half under a piece of stone that seemingly crushed their head. It was even more shocking as it was a little kid. A chill that was not from the cold of the rain ran down her spine as she walked up to the entrance, the sight making her shudder even more before continuing into the school building.
The doors were gone, shattered, and their pieces scattered about. Blood was mixed into the now-growing puddle of water as the debris strewn about hid whatever had bled. Alarm rose in her head as she clambered over the stones and into the school not before looking to see a part of the wall missing.
A piece must have fallen off and crushed someone beneath it when everything began. With a pounding heart, she found her way through the school halls glad for the few times she had to personally come in for an event or something.
Tracking her way through the destroyed interior which was less damaged than the exterior she walked up the stairs bringing herself closer to the twins' class.
Empty.
'School auditorium. That's where they'd gather the students in events like this' She thought then turned and jogged for the auditorium her heart beating hard with each step that brought her closer to the location. The auditorium doors were barely intact as a crack ran along the wall beside them. The doors were barely hanging on with one caved in randomly to the side. Pushing the more sturdy one in she stepped into the room her eyes gaping at the sight before her.
