Chapter 18

Chapter 18

Christine walked down the surprisingly empty street to the market in town square. She avoided the entrance to her childhood home and walked straight to the flower stand, wicker basket in hand. Many people silently waved at her as she went over to Louise.

“Oh hello dear,” she exclaimed, “Lovely weather, isn’t it?”

“Indeed,” Christine smiled, sifting through a bundle of daisies

“Haven’t you gotten to be quite a celebrity,” Louise whispered

Christine only laughed. She picked up a few daisies and looked at the section of roses.

“Do you have any yellow roses left, William?” she asked the florist

“Oh no Lady Waltz,” he laughed, “Only you purchase those….I wasn’t expecting you”

“Oh it’s alright,” Christine shook her head

Louise asked her burning question, “How are you and James….coming along?”

“You don’t have to whisper”

“Well….how goes it?”

“Be patient, Louise, good things come to those who wait”

“Why do you say that?”

“I’m just taking things slow”

“What reason could there be for that? You’re already married, that was fast enough on it’s own”

“I know, I know. I’m just….missing something from him”

“Have you given him whatever that is first?”

“A little….but it’s easier to give when I know he will as well….and he really hasn't-”

“Well….What is it?”

Christine had been collecting orange roses and now looked up at Louise, “Transparency”

Louise only laughed, “Him telling you that he loves you in the manner he did isn’t transparent enough?”

“Transparency is not to be mistaken with honesty,” Christine explained, “I appreciate his honesty….but he has not shown me his truest self. I can tell there is still another layer he isn’t showing. Things he tries to hide, about his opinions and thoughts. You know I’ve never been one to hold things back, so I am trying to be understanding. It’s just that I have given him full transparency to this point and he….well, he’s hiding parts of himself”

“Whatever you say,” Louise shrugged, “you’d know him better than me”

Christine only smiled.
