Act II, Chapter 4: A Regular Day

Act II, Chapter 4: A Regular Day

A few days have passed since the mock combat exam. The students attended and participated in their classes diligently. Currently, the first-year Paladins are conducting a meeting in their common room. The class has been tasked with electing a representative who will serve as a liaison between the teachers and the students. As well as acting as the sort of 'leader' of the whole group.

"I think it's obvious who should represent us, no?" White Mask says with a smug smile.

"We should put that to vote," Wildlife requests.

"I should bring up that four heads are better than one," Double Trouble points out. Cloning himself three times.

"Okay, new plan," Gateway sighs, "how about we do nominations?"

"I would like to nominate White Mask then," Sure Shot raises his hand.

"Of course you do," Smokescreen rolls her eyes.

"Alright, White... Mask," Gateway writes down, "anyone else?"

"I think you'd be a great president, Gateway," Magnetic Monopole comments.

"Thanks, MM. Me," Gateway takes note of.

"I've got a lucky feeling about Double Trouble, so him please!" Fortune smiles as he salutes D.T.

"Fine with me, Double... Trouble," Gateway lists down.

"Isn't this part where we close the nominations?" Techno-Knight Julia raises her hand. Loudly chewing her gum.

"Seconded," Smokescreen remarks.

"Sure. That's me, White Mask, and Double Trouble. All in favor of me?" Gateway asks.

Six students raise their hands.

"White Mask?"

Three students raise their hands.

"D.T.?"

Six students raise their hands.

"Wait, that's a tie between D.T. and me. So those who voted for White Mask, please reconsider. "

A small laugh can be heard within the common room. White Mask quickly turns to spot the culprit, but he can't seem to pin it down. He crosses his arms and furrows his brow.

"Who's for D.T.?"

Seven students raise their hands.

"And for me?"

Eight students raise their hands.

"Well, that's settled. I'll be the class representative moving forward. So, fuck," Gateway puts his palm on his face as the class gives him a round of applause.

"What's next on the agenda, president Gateway?" Smokescreen laughs.

"I don't fucking know. All Aegis said was to elect a class representative. With that done, you can all go," Gateway remarks as he leaves the common room.

With the meeting done, some students leave, while others linger around the common room. Smokescreen approaches the remote as she opens the T.V. It starts playing a movie titled 'Streetwise, Nucifera.'

They watch on as Streetwise carries a girl with short black hair and glasses. She lays motionless, her eyes devoid of life. He hugs her tight and removes his mask, revealing a British guy. He raises his fist in the air, screaming,

"Curse you Detour! You killed the only woman I ever loved!"

The camera pans to Detour, a wretched villain wearing white and red. He cackles as he runs away. Streetwise puts the girl down and chases the villain till the ends of the Earth.

"I heard the actor playing Streetwise was racist," Julia brings up.

"Yeah, and Detour's was caught sexting minors," Smokescreen laughs.

"The production value seems really low. How much was the budget?" Dreadnought questions.

"Hundred million dollars?!" M.M. shouts. The current group shares a laugh, as they all continue binging the film.

A few minutes pass as the film finally ends. The first years applaud while the credits play.

"That was shit," Smokescreen remarks.

"It was so bad, I couldn't even sleep," Snooze replies.

"I think I've had my fill for garbage cinema," M.M. rubs his temples.

"You guys wanna watch the sequel? It's much worse," Julia asks the group.

"I'm down," Smokescreen smiles.

"Count me in," M.M. says.

"What are we doing?" Snooze yawns.

"Fine," Dreadnought sighs, "I'll grab some popcorn."

"Wait, let me help you," Snooze grumbles as she walks with Dreadnought.

"I don't think we've properly met yet. I am Dreadnought."

"My name is Snooze. It's so nice to finally meet you," she says with a small smile.

Snooze has long, messy black hair and grey eyes. She's wearing a brown jacket with a white shirt. Her most defining feature is her eyebags.

For the first time in his life, Quinn's heart skips a beat. He loses focus on his surroundings, hearing only Snooze's voice in his head. Wow, she smells amazing, like a freshly cleaned bedsheet. Quinn thinks to himself. In his lack of awareness, he stubs his toe on the counter, as the pain knocks some sense into him.

"Are you hurt?" She asked softly. Leaning closer to his face. Dreadnought jumps back as he looks away. His face was red, like a stop sign.

"I-um, I'm fine, thanks," he smiles as he averts her gaze. The two quickly return to the couch as Julia has booted up 'Streetwise, Nucifera 2." Snooze sits down next to him as they share a bowl of popcorn.

In the movie, Streetwise is wearing his iconic black and yellow suit. He faces off against Detour yet again, but in a twist of fate, Detour is dying from Amgil. A mysterious disease he caught offscreen. In a moment of weakness, Detour asks for Streetwise's help, as his special blood could possibly cure Detour.

"You can do anything a Street can. Including self-healing." Detour says, getting on his knees for the hero. He begs him for a sample of his blood, but Streetwise, remembering Detour killed his one and only refuses and leaves Detour to his fate.

"Womp womp," Streetwise flips him off and jumps out the window.

"You're a fraud, Streetwise!" Detour shouts. Tossing the table and the furniture around.

The group cackles into the night. Their laughs echo in the common room. Dreadnought looks over and sees Snooze sleeping beside him. Her head struggled to stay up straight. Dreadnought guides her head to his shoulder as he continues watching the film.

During the climax, a kid who was the biggest fan of Streetwise contracts the mysterious Amgil disease too. In fact, the whole city contracted it and was put into lockdown. Due to Streetwise not wanting to save his worst enemy, he has doomed the town he loves. Detour may be gone, but his legacy won't be forgotten. The kid has reached stage ten, the final stage. Streetwise was able to synthesize a cure, but he has to make a choice: save one kid now, or the rest of the city later.

"I can't do this," Streetwise sobs as he clutches his chest and collapses onto the hospital floor. "Detour was right. I am a fraud."

"No you aren't," the kid replies, standing from his hospital bed to hug Streetwise. "You're a hero, you're my hero. And you're going to save the day. You always do."

Dreadnought can't help but feel sad, as he glances at his classmates. His eyes widened as he saw all of them holding back tears except for M.M., who was full-on sobbing.

"But, I can't save you. Kid." Streetwise leans his head down.

"You already have," the kid says as he hugs Streetwise. In his final breath, the kid gave Streetwise hope. Streetwise hugs the kid tightly, trying to ease him in his final moments. The kid smiles one last time, as he passes on.

*sniff* "They recast Detour?" Smokescreen asks while blowing her nose.

"They got rid of the whole cast," M.M. replies, wiping tears from his face, "it's still set in the same universe."

"How the fuck was one so shit, and this was pretty okay?" Julia sobs.

"Well, this has been fun. But we all have morning classes tomorrow," Dreadnought brings up.

"Huh?!" Snooze jolts up, "is it over?"

"Yeah, it is," Julia tears up as she leaves the room.

"Aw man, I can't believe I missed the whole thing." Snooze pouts as she stands up.

"Well, we can always watch it again. Even just the two of us?" Dreadnought asks while rubbing his neck.

"Sounds nice," she says softly, "maybe Friday?"

"Friday works," he says, smiling.

"Okay, goodnight." Snooze waves.

"Goodnight." Dreadnought waves back. He walks to the stairs and jumps while clacking his heels together. He smiles to himself as he sets a reminder for himself. Looks like it was just a regular day after all.
