Act I, Chapter 14: Somebody, Save Me! Part 2

Simulation Room, Afternoon. Paladin's Academy

During the attack on Team Red's base, White Mask, Double Trouble, and Matter continued their unified search for Team Blue's base. They run on the broken road, quickly scanning buildings for any signs.

"You guys seem lost, mind if I help?"

The three students stop as they see a man with dark green hair and blue eyes. He's wearing glasses, with a white open-collared shirt, and a green shirt inside. He's leaning on one of the buildings, tossing what seems to be a glowing crystal up, and down.

"Tell us where the Blue base is, and I won't shove your head up your ass." White Mask shouts, pointing at the man.

"Sure, it's right over THERE!" He shouts, throwing the small glowing star right at the three of them. Double Trouble and Matter jump away, while White Mask opts to block it instead. The star passes right through him as it shoots into the sky. The trio watches the star glow bright orange before descending back down. It hits the man as he starts floating and laughing.

"My name's Fortune, and it's not your lucky day." He says as he shoots out a bright orange laser from his eyes right towards them. All three manage to duck away before getting hit.

"What the hell was that?!" White Mask screams as he runs for cover.

"Fortune! He's the lucky guy. I wasn't listening when he explained his powers." D.T. comments. He summons his clones as they rush at Fortune. With one punch, he smacks them all away, forcing the clones to dissipate, and slamming D.T. to a wall.

"I think his powers are related to gambling?" Matter butts it, picking up D.T.

"How does that lead to fucking omnipotence?" White Mask asks as he charges at Fortune. He throws smoke pellets down and shoots his grappling wire at Fortune. He presses a button to activate the electric current, but Fortune isn't affected. He pulls on the wire, sending White Mask to him, and backhands him right across the face, breaking his mask, and stunning him.

Shit, Matter thinks to herself, as she picks up White Mask too. She enters a nearby building and places the two down on the lounge sofa. She picks up a table and blocks the doors to buy them a bit more time.

"Fuck!" White Mask groans, as he removes his damaged mask and substitutes it for a white domino mask. He also removes one of his grappling gauntlets, which appears to be broken.

Double Trouble slaps himself as he fixes his hair and chugs water from his bottle.

"We don't have long. If he really is omni, we need a new plan." Matter explains.

"The goal of the game is to save the dummy, right? Not fight each other. How about I stall him while you guys look for the thing." Double Trouble points out.

"Fine with me." White Mask replies. He uses his new mask to scan nearby buildings for the Blue Team.

With no time to rest, Fortune comes flying into the building, breaking the wall behind them. He hovers over the three of them with a big grin on his face.

"Go!" D.T. screams, as Matter and White Mask escape the structure. Fortune attempts to follow them, but he gets dogpiled by three clones. He tries to shake them off, but the three manage to hold on. He then spins around as fast as he can, throwing the three clones off. He then lands right in front of Double Trouble.

"How bout this? You tell me where the rest of your team is, and I'll take you in quietly," Fortune asks D.T.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

"Tempting, but I'll pass. After all, you're weak." Double Trouble laughs.

Fortune extends his hand out, generating another small star in his palm. This time, he makes it bigger and chucks it right at D.T.'s head. He dodges, as he observes the star fly upward. It slowly descends down, glowing bright orange. Fortune jumps as high as he can, grabbing the star midair, and landing right in front of D.T.

In the blink of an eye, Fortune appears behind D.T. and punches him in the chest. D.T. summons all his clones as they run at Fortune, but he's too fast, and in a flash, he forces the clones to disappear. D.T. tries to hit him, but it's all in vain.

"You're done," Fortune says as he tackles D.T. faster than he could react. They go through multiple building walls as Fortune runs around the arena, parading D.T. like a trophy. He then puts him in their holding cell back at Blue base, cuffs already placed.

"What just happened?" D.T asks.

"I blitzed you. Nothing personal." Fortune remarks as he sits down and drinks. He stretches his arms as he yawns and slumps down, falling asleep.

D.T. notices that his eyes are getting heavy, as his head starts leaning down.

Why do I feel so... tired? He thinks to himself. He struggles to keep his eyes open until he finally closes them one last time and dozes off.

Back to the streets, Matter and White Mask continue searching for Blue base. He uses his mask to scan the area, focusing more on enemy heat signatures. He turns off his special vision as he starts to inspect their surroundings.

"I think we're getting close." White Mask says, slowing his pace down.

"Gee, how'd you figure that?" Matter replies in a mocking tone.

As they descended deeper into the street, the buildings began looking slightly off. Numerous plants can be seen growing out of the ruined skyscrapers. All were producing a pheromone that signals predators to turn away. The ground begins to shake as vines grow out of the road to block their path.

"You go ahead and find that stupid dummy. I can handle some plants." White Mask orders.

"Suuuuure." Matter says as she rolls her eyes and permeates through the plants.

The vines start attacking as they ensnare White Mask's limbs. He struggles to escape as a girl walks out of the biggest plant. Her hair is brown, her eyes are green, and she's wearing a pink hoodie.

"When man faces nature, nature always wins." She says as she smiles. "My name is Wildlife, and I'm your next opponent."

White Mask continues to struggle, but the vines are too vigorous. "Wrong, when man faces nature, you get paper!" He says as he rips himself free.

"Huh?" Wildlife asks.

"Cause man cuts down trees, and they turn that shit into paper." He clarifies.

"That's dumb."

"Fuck you!"

White Mask charges at Wildlife as several plants get in his way. He pulls on the roots and presses on. One of the plants emerges from the ground, a gigantic Venus fly trap. It swallows White Mask in one gulp as it slumps back down.

"Don't worry. It won't actually dissolve you. It'll just keep you there until the game ends." Wildlife smiles as she lingers around the area.

"Motherfucker!" White Mask shouts as he punches the inner wall of the plant. He cannot even break free as he screams at the top of his lungs.

On the other end of the city, Matter has finally arrived at Team Blue's base. She yawns as she enters the building but quickly realizes what's happening.

This must be the power of that sleepy hero. What was her name, Slumber, Snooze? Whatever, I'll just go.

Matter uses the stairs to traverse the building. She permeates her entire body, barring her feet. She reaches the top floor and finds Fortune, Magnetic Monopole, Abaddon, and her teammates Meraxes, Sure-Shot, and Double Trouble, all sleeping. In the middle of the room, a girl with long black hair continues to rest peacefully. Matter checks around, looting anything she finds useful, including one of Team Blue's radios. She snatches the blue team's dummy as she makes a run for the exit.

Back to the present, Gateway stands before Matter. Both have each other's dummies in hand. Gateway's hand twitches as Matter takes a step forward.

"Is there any way I could convince you to hand that dummy over?" Gateway asks.

"No."

"Worth a shot." Gateway opens a portal behind her and kicks her in the back, sending Matter stumbling to the ground.

"Aren't you Streetwise's sidekick? Honestly, I expected more." Gateway taunts as he laughs. He snaps his fingers and opens another portal, throwing the red dummy inside.

Matter hurls a punch right at his face, but this time, Gateway opens a portal between them, making Matter punch herself. She stumbles back as Gateway lands a hit on her gut and kicks her in the face. Before she can even land, Gateway creates a portal beneath her to make her land right in front of him. He uses her own momentum to uppercut her right in the jaw. The sheer power of the hit causes Matter to let go of the blue dummy.

Gateway picks up the blue dummy and sees Matter trying to crawl to him. He scoffs as he kicks her away. "What a joke." He remarks as he opens another portal to their base. The horns sound as the game ends with an overwhelming defeat of Team Red. Each member either being captured, beaten, or, in some cases, both. May they learn from these experiences and grow beyond this loss.
