Chapter 05: "The Sandwich Girl"

After experiencing that strange scene, Ezechiel put on a bunch of large clothes that covered most of his body and face so he wouldn’t attract attention when he went outside. Mainly because he wasn’t sure if the police were already looking for him.

He had planned to turn himself in, but before that, he wanted to buy something to eat and then surrender.

With that in mind, he left his room with the intention of coming back once he finished what he had set out to do.However, he didn’t know it yet, but he would never be able to return home.

While walking down the street, he did his best to avoid showing his face or being recognized. It would be a serious problem if someone from his faculty identified him.

He was always alert, ready to rush into a store if anyone seemed suspicious of him. However, no matter how vigilant he was, he knew he couldn’t run for long. His physical condition would never allow it.

During his walk to the nearest store, he couldn’t help but look around and feel envious of all those people who were constantly smiling or simply seemed happy.

There was a moment when a couple passed by him, and he couldn’t help but feel jealous. He too wished he had someone who would support him and never betray him.

Is there anyone like that in this world for me? he wondered, feeling quite sad, and quickly answered himself:

There’s probably no one who would love me in this world. Well, maybe the only person who could’ve given me all the love I ever wanted was my late mother.

With that thought, he let out a sigh and kept walking.

He walked a couple of blocks and then crossed a street where he was almost run over by a caravan of buses. People were hanging out of the doors, singing and waving light blue and white flags. He had been so absorbed in his thoughts that he completely ignored his surroundings.

He only avoided being run over thanks to the singing that echoed from inside the vehicles, which alerted him just in time.

Within minutes, he arrived at his destination.

In front of him stood the small supermarket he was going to buy from. Before entering, he couldn’t help but reflect: Even in the last moment, I won’t stop being a glutton.

He let out a small chuckle at his own thoughts.

I’m really crazy, completely nuts for deciding to come buy food in my last moments of freedom. Even though I think this, the truth is I don’t care, he thought as the automatic doors opened before him, letting him into the store.

Once inside, he wandered around the store, thinking and looking at what to buy. After a few minutes, he finally made up his mind. He walked over to the sandwich section and picked one up, a huge smile appearing on his face, though it was hidden under the clothes he was wearing.

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

"Are they as delicious as they look?" a female voice asked from his side.

Ezechiel turned his neck in that direction to see if the question was aimed at him. Then he found a beautiful woman with long, straight dark hair, dressed in a school uniform. Noticing that her eyes were fixed on him, he quickly realized that the question was indeed directed at him.

Oh, of all people, why did she have to talk to me? he thought, feeling annoyed.

"Most of these sandwiches are really good, and you never get tired of them because of the variety," he replied, trying to sound casual.

"Hee, hee, hee, I see you’re someone who knows their stuff. Could you recommend one?" the girl continued with a gentle smile. "Today’s my treat because I passed all my exams, and I’m really happy."

Ezechiel felt a twinge of irritation run through his body.

Ugh, what an annoying girl! I don’t care at all about your personal life. Stop talking to me! he shouted in his mind, exhausted.

“Ah, if you ask for my opinion, I recommend the beef one,” Ezechiel replied, his tone lackluster because he had no other choice.

“Thank you very much, sir!” she said again, flashing that beautiful, long, and serious smile.

After that, she headed to the register to pay. When Ezechiel pulled out his wallet, a deep feeling of embarrassment hit him.

Oh, damn it! I forgot to put money in the wallet, he thought as his hand trembled.

He had rushed out of his house so quickly that, at some point, he had forgotten to refill his wallet with cash.

What now?

I’m hours away from turning myself in to the police, and I’m worried I can’t even pay for a sandwich. I’m really such a damn…

His thoughts were interrupted by a familiar female voice:

“He’s with me. I’ll pay.”

It was the same girl who had asked for his recommendations earlier. She gave him a gentle nudge with her elbow, winked, and added,

“This is payment for helping me choose the beef sandwich.”

In the end, she saved me. Seems like an attentive girl, Ezechiel thought, surprised by her attitude.

“Thanks so much for paying. I promise I’ll pay you back,” he said as they both left the store.

Ezechiel continued walking until he reached the street where he’d almost been hit by a car before entering the store. This time, he stopped to check the traffic light more carefully to see if he could cross. The light was green.

“Heh, heh, heh, looks like we’re headed in the same direction,” he heard a familiar female voice say from the side.

Ahh, I know she helped me earlier, but… I’m just not in the mood to talk. Oh my God! Ezechiel thought, exhausted.

“Yeah, looks like it,” he replied curtly.

Ezechiel wasn’t in the mood to talk. He wanted to keep the silence he’d been enjoying and get home quickly to savor the sandwich he’d bought. A glutton in his truest form.

After that, the woman kept talking and talking as Ezechiel drowned in his thoughts.

Seems like she doesn’t have much to do. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be talking to me non-stop right now.

Ugh, she’s so annoying. Well, it’s normal, she’s still just a high school girl.

He observed, almost distracted, as cars passed in front of him, one after the other. His gaze stayed fixed on the constant movement.

Should I keep living?

Wouldn’t it be better to die before going to jail and living a life like this?

If I die, I wouldn’t have to worry about anything… I could rest in peace. What a satisfying thought.

“Eh… eh, sir, are you okay? Are you still alive?” The girl’s voice abruptly pulled him out of his thoughts.

“By the way, what’s your name? Mine’s Ishtar,” she added, with a slightly serious yet beautiful smile.

Ezechiel sighed, annoyed by the interruption, but couldn’t help thinking that it was a really cute and unique name.

“My name is Ezechiel,” he replied in a low, hoarse voice.

《Selected individual》

Suddenly, a strange, emotionless feminine voice echoed like a whisper in his mind.
