Chapter 1 - My First Client

Chapter 1 - My First Client

There was a knock on my door.

"Coming," I said.

When I opened the door, the interviewer from yesterday was waiting there. I didn't remember giving him my home address. I thought they were a small-time organization but finding my personal information must've been tricky, maybe there is more to this organization than meets the eye. I never asked for his name.

"So what are you doing here, Mr...?" I asked.

"How rude of me, you can call me Mr. E," he told me.

"Mr. E, really like the word mystery?" I asked while rolling my eyes.

"Yes, like the word I am here to deliver your contract and first client."

"Can I look at the contract? Also, I don't remember giving you my home address." I said while looking at him with a curious face.

"We have our resources," he said as he handed me the contract.

I read the content of the contract. It was two years contract with two months trial period. It contained non-disclosure agreements that wrote that I must not disclose any information about my client and the overlord consultancy form. It also said they would pay me by the hour and I got one week paid leave for a year. They also had a dental insurances plan.

"Damn with this kind of terms why haven't I heard of you guys?"

"We like to work discreetly."

"Then why did your company put a wanted ad in an alley?"

"Th...that was a communication error on our part," he said while stuttering.

"And you're hiring me knowing full well that I was an ex-hero?"

"We have other ex-hero as our employee. We did our researcher on you Mr.Reed, so we know you're not a spy and the hero union has no idea about our existence anyway."

Of course, they wouldn't just hire me without doing any research on me. I finally signed the contract.

"I once again welcome you to overlord consultancy firm. Now let's go I'll explain about your first client on the way to the office," he said while smiling.

He leads me to his car, a cherry red Edison. It was the newest model with a magi-tech core as its power source.

This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.

"This cherry red car screams discreet huh Mr. E?" I asked sarcastically.

He just kept walking, but I saw that his cheeks were red. We traveled using his Edison that rode like a dream. Maybe I should buy a new car, an Edison like this might be cool to have, it's not like I can't afford it. While I was contemplating on buying a new car, we arrived at the office.

"We're here."

"Hey isn't this a hostel?"

"Yes, it's a cover for our hideout."

It was a two-story building made out of bricks. It had a rundown aura to it. Inside there was a receptionist or a better name to call him was a bodyguard. He was a 200 cm tall man with a scar on his left eye and bulging muscles that could rip his white t-shirt at any seconds.

"Hey Bob, this is Peter, he works here now. Bob, Peter. Peter, Bob."

I nodded to Bob, and he nods back.

"Bob is the receptionist and chef. He makes an amazing English breakfast," he said while drooling a little.

Mr. E gave me a tour of the place. There were empty rooms upstairs that I could sleep in and a meeting room. The back of the first floor is the dining room and the kitchen if I was hungry I should ask Bob for food. It looked like any other hostel, that was before I saw the basement.

They have amazing magi-tech. The equipment needed to travel the multiverse, magic cloaking devices and even a Nil Portal. They had to be loaded and have connections to higher governments because not just anyone can acquire a Nil Portal.

Nil Portal named after its creator Sir Nil. A techno-mage and a legend at the hero union. It was made to be an efficient way to travel between worlds. Summoning circles was random, had a lot of different requirements, and needed a lot of mana to activate. So the Nil Portal revolutionized travel across the multiverse.

"So your client is a demon lord trying to conquer the world. He didn't specify what conquering the world meant and he didn't tell us how he wants to us to conquer the world. So you have to ask him yourself. It is a small world with only two continent and around 500 million human population and the demons around half of that. They have medieval levels technology but advance levels in magic." he explained.

"Change your clothes, you're not going as our representative while wearing that, also take a shower, you stink," he said.

He was right, I did stink but what did he expect, he knocked on my door in the morning and asked me to came to work. I didn't even have time for breakfast. So I took a shower at one of the empty room. While I was showering Bob left me my working clothes. It was a black suit and tie. There was also a briefcase that contained the demon lord contract. I looked at the mirror ready to go.

"I'm ready to go, but don't I need any training though?" I asked Mr. E.

"Your job is bossing around a demon lord is that so hard?" he asked while rolling his eyes.

"I guess not, wish me luck," I said as I pass through the portal.

After a blinding light, I appeared in front of a throne with a demon that sat atop it. It looked like a devil. Red skin with two obsidian horn sticking out of its forehead, leathery bat wings, and a tail with a heart at its end. He looked comical rather than scary.

"Who dares enter the demon lord chamber?" he asked menacingly.

"Hi, I'm Peter Reed from Overlord Consultancy Firm."

"Did you say Peter Reed?" he asked but his menacing voice he was gone.

"Yes, I'm Peter Reed," I said with a smile.

"RUN IT'S THE LAUGHING REAPER!" he said with fear in his voice.

As soon as he said that the demons began running out of the room, even the demon lord destroys one of the walls just to run away. It seems like they knew me.
