Chapter Three, Sina, Akain, and Isaac.

...

Akain scoffed with a laugh, the chains on his rattling.

"I would laugh, and tell you that we're doomed to death." He smiled.

"I would probably question how you knew that? And then I would laugh, and tell you that we're doomed to death." Sina also chuckled.

The two before him didn't seem to take him serious at all.

"Okay, but what if I wanted to make it out of this situation alive?" He asked, the emotion on his face prevalent. "And, what am I supposed to do against a talking ghoul?"

In that moment, about all the chains belonging to everyone in the back of the cart rattled.

The group was whispering so of course they weren't heard by the soldiers in the front, but the 3 other random people in the back could hear their whispers in the wind.

Isaac couldn't help but notice Sina taking a big gulp. Akain on the other hand had his eyes widen, a slightly crazed smile appearing on his face.

"A talking ghoul?" He asked.

"What is that?..." The soldier's words were passed along by the wind, making Isaac twitch.

Everyone in the front swiveled their necks towards what was ahead, while everyone in the back was still focused on Isaac and Akain.

"There are no, talking ghouls. That would be a Wight." Akain said, Isaac wanting to know more by the second.

He knew he was running out of time.

"Alright, all of you. Wake up! Get up! And be prepared to fight!" The soldier yelled, making Akain and Sina swing their heads in his direction.

"What?..." Sina murmured.

"Look. When we get our chains off, I need both of you to follow my lead." The two glanced back at him, sweat wanting to drip from Sina's face while Akain just stared on in intrigue.

The soldier passed by, unshackling Sina and the man across from her first, then Akain and Isaac.

But, as he was frantically moving towards the person next to Isaac, he quickly stood up, his hand sliding towards the dagger attached to the soldier's hip.

With a slight of hand he didn't know he had, he pulled the dagger out, stepping away from the man.

"Drop. To the floor." Isaac said, quickly getting on his chest.

While on the ground, he checked both of his sides, he didn't wait for the two to follow him, he had hope they would just listen.

Looking underneath the seats, he could see some had bags under them, but there were many seats that didn't have anything there.

"Get under the seats." Isaac listened to his own words, sliding on the wooden floor and getting comfortable beneath the wood everyone was sitting on.

Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere.

He looked across from him, to find Sina cramped up with bags next to her head and feet. She was forced into a fetal position, and there was clear confusion and fright on her face.

Looking up farther towards the front of the carriage, he could see Akain patiently waiting underneath the seats.

His back was completely against the wall, as he was bigger than Isaac and Sina.

Bodies dropped in the cart, people jumped out, and some were forced out against their will.

Sina and Akain watched the soldier that unshackled them, staring as he killed a ghoul with his very own sword.

The man turned around, flicking the blood off of his sword.

There was still one man sitting in the cart, his head lowered and his body shaking. He was praying to the god above.

"We have to-" The man's sword slipped out of his hand, dropping and tumbling forwards a bit.

Blood trickled down to the floor, and rather quickly, the man fell to his knees.

Barely, the three could make out someone standing behind the soldier. They watched as the soldier's body left the ground, weird sounds of sucking and even chewing sounding through the wind.

It was gruesome to listen to, let alone watch, but it was over in roughly twenty seconds.

The soldier was released, his body being tossed forward.

With a thug and some mildly wet noises, Isaac found himself staring into the lifeless eyes of the soldier that just released him less than two minutes ago.

He covered his mouth, calming his nerves, and his breathing.

He tried to clear his mind, blocking out the Wight's steps.

The creature made it's way to the front of the cart. There was a small tussle as soldier manning the carriage tried to escape.

Ultimately, he failed.

The three could hear a neck snap, the carriage going wild as the horses screeched and ran rampant.

"Hush." A voice familiar to only Isaac spoke.

It was frightening and raspy, and Isaac could see Sina buckle in fear. Her eyes were wet, tears dripping at a slow rate.

The carriage shook and went wild, the two horses that carried it having been ruthlessly murdered. The reigns were severed, and the cart was moving out of control.

"Now where is that noble..." The Wight murmured, jumping away from the cart as it derailed from the trail.

There was lots of commotion as they went straight through bushes and foliage, but it all stopped with an abrupt clash.

The three slid forward, Sina hitting her head and luggage while Isaac and Akain knocked themselves on the front wall of the cart.

In the front of the walkway was a large indent, the cart having rammed straight into a thick tree.

There were screams in the distance, light dancing from the fires, children crying.

The three laid in silence.

Akain held a shocked expression on his face.

Sina was crying.

Isaac was attempting to control his breathing.

"In the fifty years I spent in the military... I have only seen a Wight once." Akain whispered, sliding out from under the seats.

Isaac followed, both he and Sina climbing out from their positions reluctantly.

"And that was when we went to war." Akain stood tall, his fists clenched as he looked at the raging fire that was burning through the outpost.

"This is a coordinated attack. Not some random horde. They attacked at nightfall. They ambushed the caravan bringing in new military power before they could reach the outpost. It was to incapacitate us, alongside being a demoralizer. They've planned this out." He whispered.

Isaac's fist tightened around the dagger in his hand, listening to Akain's words.

He watched as the mans beard moved. His eyes widened, and, eerily enough...

"They're here for something. We have to figure out what." Akain's face was beaming with a crazed smile, his arms shaking, veins popping out in the wind.

Isaac gulped.

He overlooked the fact that everyone in the caravan was a criminal, or prisoner of some sort. They did something worthy of being banished to a place called Madgrave.

Looking at Akain's hulking figure, he felt a tinge of fear. But, through the character he witnessed so far, he had faith this man wasn't completely insane...

"No we don't!" Sina cried.

"We need to... stay alive! There's no way the outpost wasn't able to make a distress call. Knowing how far Madgrave is from any other settlements, help should arrive within a week? We just have to hold out for that long..." She explained, looking at Isaac for confirmation.

"We wont make it." Akain replied. "There's a fucking Wight here, what don't you understand? Did you not hear about Verdan?" He asked, a small bout of disdain on his face.

Sina was choked up, she clearly didn't know what to say.

Isaac on the other hand was lost, he didn't understand anything.

What exactly did a Wight mean? And what the fuck was Verdan?
