Chapter 15: A Minor Setback

Chapter 15: A Minor Setback

"Man! What the hell are you doing?" Cyrus performed a chokehold on Kron.

"Stop! Stop! Release me! What did I even do?" Kron shouted, struggling to pull away Cyrus' right arm from his neck.

"That's enough Cyrus!" Adriana said, causing Cyrus to release him. "But Kron, you almost cost the three of us trouble."

"I don't understand. Shouldn't we report what we just saw? Isn't that hole in the wall dangerous?" Kron replied.

"Normally, you are right but a zone shift just happened! Its also the first time for us seeing those creatures personally. We might get interrogated! Even worse suspected!" Adriana frowned. She has actually been thinking about it for quite a while.

Same could be said for Cyrus and Kron. They just didn't have much time earlier to discuss it earlier. They already wondered what sort of creature was able to destroy the city walls. Did the spider came from the outside? Why did the zone suddenly shift? Was it all just a coincidence? How long have that wall been in there? The three discussed quite a number of things but they are not able to come up with an answer. Kron learned that zone shifts come in different forms. What they encountered is considered as one of the worst kind that only happens so rarely in semi-stable zones.

Kron shuddered, remembering the bloodthirsty looking creatures. "Is that why Professor Anori is in a hurry?"

"Yeah! Do you think that she is in a hurry to just question us of our plant? She is probably being called for a meeting regarding the zone shift." Cyrus answered.

Kron frowned, not happy that they would just be passive about it. "Then should we just kept quiet?"

"We already gave them a clue. If they would investigate that path we said then they would find that out." Adriana exhaled deeply. "I'll also try to report it to my family. It would be better if we make it seem that an experienced adventurer is the one who found it. What about you Cyrus?"

Cyrus sighed, massaging his forehead. "Unlike you, I'll probably get scolded if they found out what we just did but I could probably have my uncle check it. I'll try to make up some story. That hole really needs to be closed."

With the suggestion of the two, Kron finally agreed as he also doesn't want to be in trouble. They then returned to their respective homes.

-------------------

The next few days that have passed since their classes started were quite peaceful. The transported got used to the life inside the campus. Of course, it was not always without challenge due to the occasional tests or combat sparring but it was at least safe. Moreover, they were able to continuously learn and improve themselves. There was still the issue of the zone shift that recently happened but it has no effect on the lives of the students.

A large carpet. One large TV. Recliners. Sofas. Book shelves. The second floor of their temporary residence was a large living room. Most of the transported hang out here and talk about their experiences. Currently, Kron was hanging out here with Ichika, Min-Joon and a few more others. Ichika invited him to try to hang out with others since he was mostly has been by himself if not with Ichika or Min-Joon. Kron did agree and invited Min-Joon so he could also hang out with the rest.

"Okay guys! enough of me! I want to ask someone else!" Elijah swiftly rotated his head facing Kron. Smiling as if he found a good target, he opened his mouth. "Kron! I heard that you are getting top results in your basic environment class!"

Kron twitched, not expecting that he would suddenly be put on the spot. "We were just lucky that one time."

"But didn't your team also got perfect score in the exam yesterday?" Jeshan asked. He was one of Kron's classmates in the environment class which he haven't interacted before. He has a bowl cut hairstyle and usually wears green colored sweaters.

Kron wanted to say that the exam yesterday was no different from Earth's tests. It was just a simple identification exam regarding rocks. They just needed to read and study hard. In fact, they were just one of the few who got a perfect score. Those who failed the exam are mostly groups containing 3 non-native members. Kron thought that they should be the kind of people who teams up with their close friends but ended up blaming each other because every one of them were lazy.

Gibbes scoffed. "Meh! Of course he would get top results!" He made a dismissive smirk and raised his eyebrows. He then made a direct eye contact with Kron as if telling Kron to confess a sin he didn't make. "I heard that your two members are from noble families. Is that right?"

"Yes. They-"

"Woah! You are really lucky! Must have felt pretty good having talented teammates right?" Gibbes made a sarcastic comment, trying to avoid directly mocking Kron. Still, his voice exudes a condescending tone that didn't escape some of the people around.

Ichika's eyes rolled as she listened to Gibbes. She then leaned closer to Kron on her right since they sat on sofas that are just beside each other. "But Kron, didn't you tell me that those two still kept asking to group up with you?"

"Why does she need to bring that up?" Kron didn't have any plans to defend himself and just wanted to affirm Gibbes' comment to finish the conversion. Unfortunately, Ichika does not seem to think this way. Kron, of course, didn't want to embarrass Ichika since she already mentioned it. "Yeah! Kind of. We started on a good note so its probably because of that."

"Don't be too humble! They probably recognized your ability!" It was Elijah who interjected. Since he started the question, he didn't want any issues suddenly happening between the group. "Anyway Ichika, I heard you and Cahira sparred?"

"Yeah. I lost that one. Cahira is just too good." Ichika smiled, doesn't seem to care that she lost.

"Ichika lost? She didn't tell me about that! So Cahira is that strong?" Kron thought to himself, staring at Ichika.

"I saw that fight it was pretty close! I thought Ichika would win!" Xin-yi said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Really? I'm jealous I didn't get to watch it," Elijah said. "But it's great that you don't feel bad. Just train hard and you might be able to beat her next time!"

"Are you really talking about me while I'm just here?" Cahira shouted. She was sitting on a nearby sofa with another group of transported. "But Ichika, don't be distracted next time!"

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Ichika chuckled. "Yeah. I'll try my best next time!" She then turned to Elijah. "Let's get back to you Elijah. They said you haven't lost a spar yet?"

The day continued with the transported sharing their own experiences in class and watching TV. After all, they didn't have a lot of things to do. They are still not allowed to leave the campus and they don't have a lot of credits to spend. What they didn't expect is that there is quite a lot of variety in shows that they could watch. They didn't expect that since they thought that this world would just focus on just fighting and learning. There were shows on people singing, dancing and acting. There are even reality TV shows where the awakened are made to do challenges.

-------------------

It was another seemingly ordinary day for Kron. He only has one class for today and it was the combat class. The class began with the usual routine such as listening to theoretical combat scenario lessons followed by warm up sessions. Eventually, they were then again asked to sit around the training mat for another sparring session. Kron's fear of fighting have already dwindled down. He won some of his previous spars before and also lost a lot. It was not really a problem because they are immediately healed after every fight and most of his classmates have been friendly with him.

Their class have also been more proactive now unlike during their first class. They like to volunteer themselves and even directly challenge each other. Of course, this was something that Instructor Votan supported. A little competition between two students won't be bad after all or so that's what everyone thought at first. The truth was that there are students that like bully others and they cover it by challenging someone they want to make fun of. One of them was of course, Guson.

"Instructor. I would like to volunteer next!" Guson shouted. He walked towards the center of the mat. He was currently wearing fitted long sleeved clothing similar to the rashguards that mixed martial artist use.

"So are you challenging someone? or," Instructor Votan looked around. "Should I ask for a volunteer?"

"Yes Instructor! I would like to challenge Kron." Guson said, smirking at Kron.

"Oh? You two seem to have some misgivings! Are you going to use this fight to solve that?" Instructor Votan scrutinized both Guson and Kron's faces. From what he could see, he could easily speculate that there was something between the two. "Well.. Anyway, Just remember that this is just a spar. Avoid fatal blows!"

"Don't worry sir. It will just be a friendly fight." Guson replied, looking at Kron. "Right Kron?"

Kron already expected for a long time that Guson would challenge him. What he didn't understand is why just now. Two weeks have passed since the classes have started but he seems to have been randomly challenging other people except for him. His friends didn't also seem to bother Kron. They seemed to have suddenly ignored him until just now where they are all smiling with malice towards him. "Alright. Let's fight."

The two then positioned themselves in the mat and took the medicine from Instructor Votan.

"You must have been feeling good about yourself this past few days." Guson said, continuing his malicious smile at Kron. "You fooled me really."

"What are you even saying?" Kron frowned, not understanding the nonsense that Guson was spouting. He has been losing a lot of sparring battles so why should he feel good? Was his initial win against Lanogas made him scared of him?

"Well, it doesn't matter now." Guson started walking towards him.

"He should have some sort of superhuman strength! I can't fight him head on." Kron thought as he was already walking backwards. He was planning to get a weapon. He already saw quite a number of Guson's fight and he always just used his fist to fight.

But to Kron's surprise, Guson suddenly charged at him. With no warning, he gave Kron a blow to his stomach with his right fist. Without having any time to think, Kron turned his front shirt to steel as a response. "Bam!" Kron slid backwards to the end of the mat. Almost falling down the ground. The thin sheet of steel transformed from his shirt was not enough to protect him from the punch. He started coughing blood, holding his stomach from pain.

"So you really are nothing? Why would the likes of Cyrus and Adriana even teamed up with you?" Guson indignantly said, grinding his teeth. "Maybe this would open their eyes!" He started to charge again.

Kron now have some understanding on why Guson's gang have ignored him. They have heard of Cyrus and Adriana teaming up with him that made him apprehensive. In Guson's mind, there is no way a noble native like them would choose some useless punk. This means that Kron might have been hiding something and Lanogas' defeat might not have been due to luck. But as he continued to observe Kron from each class that they had, he was not able to see something special. The only thing that he was able to conclude was that Kron's ability allowed Kron to cover his clothes or weapons with some sort of metal and it was not enough for him to fear Kron.

Luckily for Kron, getting pushed back by the punch placed him just beside the weapon rack. He took a spear then threw it at Guson, targeting his body. Unfortunately, Guson was too fast and just side stepped the spear. Kron then took a one-handed sword before Guson could reach him. He then slashed at him but Guson rotated his body backwards causing him to miss. Guson then counter attacked with a punch to the face. This time, Kron was prepared so he was able to dodge by a hair's breadth and ran away to the other side. With Kron dodging, Guson hit the barrier surrounding the mat, making him shake his hand from the pain.

"Running away now? Is that all you can do?" Guson laughed. The pain on his hand was nothing and it didn't injure him.

"What can I do now? I can't hit him! I need to stop him from moving!" Kron thought as he prepared to defend again.

Guson started walking slowly towards him. He was not going to let him escape again. As they were only about 2 meters away, Guson raised his right fist, not fearing the sword that Kron was holding. Suddenly, he felt that he could not move his arms comfortably. He looked at his arm and saw that his sleeves are now made from steel. With his strength, he was still able to move his arm slowly, bending the steel sleeves little by little. Still, it gave Kron enough time to attack. He slashed at Guson's body.

Blood should have splattered causing Guson to lose. That was what Kron had in mind but unfortunately, his attack only caused Guson a minor long wound. It was only able to tear Guson's skin. Kron could see a faint aura surrounding Guson as Guson raised his other fist. Kron then tried to turn Guson's other sleeve to steel but his ability seem to be not working properly. There was something resisting his ability and he was sure that it was the aura around Guson. With his failed usage of his ability, Guson's left fist connected with precision on his stomach. The blow caused him to drop on the ground, gasping for air.

The pain he felt temporarily incapacitated him that even caused him to involuntarily deactivate his ability. He was clutching his stomach, unable to speak. Not done with his attack, Guson started to kick Kron which forced Kron to curl like a ball to protect himself.

"You surprised me there! I didn't know that you could use that ability without touching! The information that someone gave me seemed to be incomplete but," Guson stomped Kron on his shoulder while looking down on him. "It is still useless."

Kron didn't know what to do anymore. He can't even think properly due to his condition. He did not want to lose this fight but the outcome of the fight seems evident. Guson was about to punch him from above but Instructor Votan grabbed Guson by his arm, stopping his attack.

"That's enough Guson! You already won." Instructor Votan said then smiled at him. "And congrats on being able to use reinforcement."

Guson was not yet satisfied with the battle but hearing Votan's words made him look at his own body. "Ha! I did it! I could use aura!"

"Not yet! But that's a start. Now go back to your seat!" Votan ordered.

Guson kneeled down momentarily. "Your girlfriend is next." He whispered before going back to his seat.

Votan then activated the medicine to heal Kron. "Are you okay now?"

Kron started breathing normally again. "Ah thank you. Yes.. I'm okay now." Physically, he was now okay. Emotionally? he felt worst.

"Then you can go back to your seat!" Votan replied.

When class ended, Kron immediately left for the dorm. Guson's gang never left their focus on him so staying for long would not benefit him. He avoided their eyes like the scared kid he once was. He has lost previous spars before but this one was different. It should be his first step to overcome his fears. Was his past about to repeat itself? What could he do? What had he done wrong? These thoughts started to fill his mind.
