Chapter 5: The Other Difficulties

Chapter 5: The Other Difficulties

James smiled to himself. He loved this new change, it was so easy and pleasant, he didn’t have to take care of himself, and everything he needed was provided! All he had to do was take some classes, but that was a small price to pay overall.

He would have to fight something to leave, but that was in the far future, he didn’t think he would have to worry about that for a long time. He thought he was pretty strong overall, he had a skill called Parry (F) That let him redirect someone's attack! It was an awesome skill that made enemies attacks worthless against him.

He glanced at his status, which must be among the top contenders out of all of the players. He was only in easy difficulty, but his power was probably closer to nightmare difficulty.

Lars swung his sword, slicing off the head of the last goblin. Breathing heavily, he lay against the ground. After a few seconds of deep breathing, he stood up, walking back to his small home.

Opening the door, he hung his sword on the wall, sitting down at his small table. He held his head in his hand, crying softly. He missed his family. Why had he been forced to come here? It was so unfair. He thrived even though he hated it here.

He stood up suddenly, chair scraping against the stone floor. Taking off his coat, he hung it on the wall, collapsing on his coarse bed. This world was harsh, yes, but it was survival of the fittest, and Lars was sure that he could take down almost any challenge that came his way. He wished he had chosen a harder difficulty, but where he was at was fine, as long as he persevered.

Very hard wasn’t a bad difficulty, it just wasn’t the highest, and Lars wanted to be the strongest, no matter how much he had to work for it.

As he started to drift off to sleep, he checked his status one last time, smiling softly as it shone above him.

Lesli raised her staff high above her head, casting three spells in quick succession. The ogre roared as three Fireballs slammed into its chest, sending it flying backwards.

Narrowing her eyes, she cast her other spell, Lightning strike. The ogre screamed as its skull was hit with a lightning strike as thick as its arm.

It wailed before collapsing into a heap of flesh, dead.

LEVEL UP!!! X3

Lesli hummed to herself, slinging her staff over her shoulder. She loved using magic, it made her so much more powerful. With a simple point of her staff and burst of magic, she could send a ball of fire the size of a volleyball hurtling at her enemies.

She was easily one of the top 12 players, maybe even higher. She wondered how Atlas was doing. She had been told he was also a Player.

She shook her head, that wasn’t important right now. She pulled up her stat sheet, glancing at her powers.

She invested two points into intelligence, and one into wisdom. She smiled at her stats, happy with the growth she had experienced over the last day and a half.

She would rise, and she would grow her arsenal of spells, becoming the greatest mage there ever was.

Lesli grinned to herself, lying on the ground and starting to doze off, this would be fun.

Malcolm screamed, running as fast as he could. He hated this despicable world. Why had he been sent here? He wanted nothing to do with magic, or monsters.

He just wanted to go home.

He turned, throwing a bolt of lightning over his shoulder, hitting one of the many demonic birds chasing after him. It did nothing to lessen the pressure. There were just too many of them.

One of them cawed, swooping down and trying to take a bit out of his shoulder. Malcolm screamed again, jumping to the side, narrowly dodging the giant bird.

He fell to the ground, exhausted beyond words. Why? Why did this happen? He wished he had chosen a lesser difficulty, he had thought this was fake, so he had chosen one of the harder difficulties, not thinking that this would happen.

How wrong he had been. Malcolm sobbed, watching as the birds descended, grabbing him and lifting him up, rising higher, and higher, until he couldn’t even see the ground. “What are you doing!?!” Malcolm screamed at the birds, thrashing violently and trying to get them to let go.

Looking down, he realized that breaking free would surely kill him.

He stilled, letting the birds carry him away.

After a couple more minutes of flying the birds dove down, setting Malcolm down gently on the ground, before flying away.

Malcolm was confused. Why had they dropped him off here?

“Hello young one. I can help you if you would like.” A gravelly voice said from behind him.

Malcolm’s eyes widened, whirling around.
