Chapter 3 - The Wanderer

Chapter 3 - The Wanderer

The landscape behind that dune was fabulous, the blazing desert sun illuminated that wonderful city seen to the horizon. A long dirt road connected the city to several other places, from a distance it was possible to see several branches on the road.

I went down from the dune and went to the main road, several people were heading towards the city, many carts carrying goods and adventurers were heading towards it. Human adventurers smiling and talking loudly, elves and their exotic chariots, harpies soaring in the sky with beautiful wings shining in the sunlight, a satyr merchant carrying various goods on his fire lizards, all very charming.

The closer I got, the bigger the city walls got, to a point where I could barely see the top anymore, they were huge gray walls with circular ornaments and a double gate in the middle with several passages to get in and out of the city, all protected by a guard carrying a spear.

All the people who entered the city seemed to pass through an identification, they searched some and let others through normally, I went towards the first entrance on the left, there was waiting for me one of the guards. Big, intimidating, and with a furious face, he was a minotaur, with shiny black fur, and a muscular body, he seemed to stare at the horizon with unshakable willpower, it was simply creepy.

I approached slowly as I appreciated the greatness of that guard, if someone were to describe that moment it would be like, "Then he started to stare at the guard with his eyes shining with happiness"

I went straight into town, then the guard looked at me with a piercing look, placed the spear in front of me, and in a loud, gravelly voice asked about my status card.

"Hey, you look suspicious to me... present your status card"

I didn't know what this status card was, I took off my hood and stayed stuck in place until I thought straight and asked the guard what it was.

He looked at me with a strange face and screamed.

"Hey! Intern! Come over here!"

I was slightly stunned by that powerful scream, and soon a young boy with a human appearance and deer antlers appeared.

He was a hybrid, it seems that in that city inter-species marriage was common... the boy answered the guard politely, he was wearing a black outfit with a white label with a green border that looked like a star, it was written in the language of the bestial, roughly the translation would be "New".

As far as I knew everyone in the world spoke the same language, but each civilization chose a different way of writing the words, some used letters in an alphabet and others used symbols to express different things.

"This one looks like a wanderer, take him to headquarters to make a status card first"

The young man nodded and asked me to follow him.

I couldn't hold my curiosity, so on the way to the headquarter, I asked him several things. Even though some questions were personal he answered normally.

"You humans are kind of weird, you fight over stupid things... my mother is human, she says she came here because here she could be free, and she wouldn't have to worry about the greed of humans"

It was weird to think about inter-species marriage... but who am I to decide what's right or wrong? It was this prejudice that caused all the wars and intrigues in the world, luckily it seemed that this sort of thing was fading away.

I stopped bothering the boy with these things, and without even noticing we had arrived at the headquarter.

Inside the headquarter many people were sitting at various tables solving various issues.

There was a wide variety of species working there, but none caught my attention more than a slime girl at a table in the corner of the room signing huge paperwork, I thought it was extremely rare to find a humanoid slime, but the boy said that with the Overtime the slimes began to develop better and become aware more easily and that there they didn't need to hide their appearance, they could stay in their normal form.

If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

The boy led me to a table at the back of the room, coincidentally it was on the side of the slime girl's desk.

"This one looks like a wanderer, see what you do with him"

I sat in the chair and was admiring the complexity of that mysterious being... even if slimes weren't complicated... then the girl in front of me caught my attention.

"Hey… if you liked her that much, why don't you ask her out right away?"

I got a little startled, but I remembered what I was doing there... asking her out? but I just arrived...

The lady asked for some information about me, like where I came from and what my intentions were in the city, so I answered objectively saying that I was a wanderer, I was just traveling the world, but I didn't know what to say about where I came so I just said I came from the desert but she didn't take that as an answer and demanded I be more specific but I didn't know where I was born, so I said it came from the library.

"What library?"

I didn't know how to explain what it was so I started a little explanation of what that place was.

While I explained in detail she interrupted me and asked me to take off my coat and show her arm, so I just dematerialized it, the coat was made with my mana anyway.

I had forgotten about that, it was common knowledge that whoever had been in that place had carved a mark on his right arm, it was a diamond with two elongated points.

"I don't understand, I know what these brands indicate, our leader has three of them, but... why is yours so different?"

I soon understood what she was talking about, so I explained to her how it worked.

In the library, there are eight "rooms", each one representing one of the civilizations of that world, one of which represents the world itself. Each time you complete a species room you get a diamond on the arm that points to the center, each room has a diamond. On my arm were six diamonds and a circle joining them, this indicated that I had passed through all the rooms.

The girl was elated and ran to the next room to get a mana stone, according to her, people who have passed through the library usually have incredible magic power and impressive abilities.

She brought a low-class mana crystal, in the library there were many mana crystals but they were much more powerful than this one.

She then asked me to put my hand on the crystal and put all my mana into it, so I did.

The crystal began to glow and soon cracked and went out, releasing some mana into the environment.

The girl looked at me with a look of disappointment, as if she was expecting something more.

"It doesn't make sense, the crystal broke but the maximum amount of mana detected by the crystal was much less than I expected"

She had just reminded me of something I didn't like very much, I don't have a very high mana capacity, I don't have much talent to increase my mana, if I tried to increase more than I had, my soul would start to vibrate like it was going to burst, so I just couldn't store more than that energy in my body.

"Answer.. the crystal broke due to mana injection efficiency... the master doesn't have a good amount of mana stored in his body"

And again someone reminded me of this sad fact, but what a bad day this was being.

The girl stood still with her eyes wide as she stared at the cube.

"This thing speaks? I thought it was just a cute accessory!"

I had to explain to her what the "cute accessory" was all about and while I was saying that it was like my only friend he rudely interrupted me.

"I'm not somebody, so you can't call me friend... but I'm not just a cute accessory either, I'm an amazing artificial intelligence..."

And I thought I had a friend... Artificial intelligence with strong feelings, right... you can't even say it's not a person.

The girl took a card made of rare magical metal and gave it to me.

"Here, this is your status card, you have everything you need on it, it will also give you access to all alliance cities, don't miss it"

A little metal card, very nice with all my data engraved on it.

I was about to start thinking and saying goodbye when she interrupted me and handed me a green coin with a spear carved into it. According to the girl, that coin allowed me to meet the city's leader, he would love to meet someone like me, since he has also been to the library. It seemed like a good idea to meet him, but I would think about it later, now I was looking forward to seeing that wonderful city.

I left the headquarter and came across a huge square, several people walking to and fro, in the center, there was a water fountain with a gigantic statue of a person, so I thought that this could be the leader of the city. I gave a small smile and thought aloud "What should I do now?"

"I thought you were going to the last wise house"

What? The house of the last sage? What did that mean? The cube didn't understand why I didn't know about this place, but I really didn't.

"What do you mean you don't know? It was the main guideline of the library... to complete your knowledge journey you need to visit the last sage alive... they should have told you that."

A guideline? How strange... no one told me anything about it in the library.

"It doesn't matter, you have to go there anyway, it should be your destiny, so let's go"

No, wait a minute, I'm not going there now... The cube was insistent, so to calm him down I said I would go to the wise man's house, but only after seeing the city.

Could it be that there was an error in his programming to know that no one told me about this? The cube's reaction was too exaggerated... let it be that I just wanted to see the city.

"A combustion can even have a lot of energy stored, but if it is not efficient in its use, it will only dissipate and lose potential"
