After an extremely tiring day, you get back on your computer ready to browse RRL, play some games or watch your favourite youtubers. You sit down (or lie down) and start it up. When it turns on you get a message from one of your friends. Apparently, there's this new game (s)he wants you to check out.
Sighing, you decide to take a look. You know s(he) will keep pestering you until you give in so there was no point trying to wiggle your way out of this.
You look at the name and search it up. "Not Really But Okay" It's a strange name for a game but you don't really care. You're just going to take a quick look.
Only one result shows up. You click on it. It takes a long time to load but once it does you get even more disappointed.
Its a blank grey screen save for the words "Not Really But Okay". They are displayed in the middle of your screen, with a button reading "PLAY" below it. Your friend didn't mention if it was browser based or indie, did he?
You press play getting ready to cringe at the bad graphics and grammar that are so common amongst other indie and browser games.
The screen presents itself, it retains that bland look but its oddly inviting.
Question #1: What is your gender?
Huh, straight to Character creation.
A small entry box is displayed below the text. At the bottom of the page is a button displaying the word "NEXT".
You think about it for a bit and come upon an answer. You type it in and go to the next question.
This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.
Question #2: What race do you want to be?
Again, you see the entry box and "NEXT" button. It seems only the question changes. Strangely, they isn't a choice here, only an entry box. Maybe they anticipated what races people wanted to be and ignored the possibility of those extremely random choices?
You type in your answer as you ponder about what the developers were thinking.
Question #3: What is your alignment?
Now, instead of an entry box and the next button, nine answer buttons appeared.
They read, Lawful Good, Neutral Good, Chaotic Good, Lawful Neutral, True Neutral, Chaotic Neutral, Lawful Evil, Neutral Evil and Chaotic Evil.
It seems its talking about how your character behaves and interacts with the world. It's a little bit more in depth than most games you've seen but there are still trashy games whose only redeeming quality is their diversity.
You click your answer and continue.
Question #4: What class are you?
Like the race, this one only had an entry box. Truly, they must think the human mind is limited to such monotonous thinking! Maybe they're right...
You type in your answer and continue.
Question #5: How old is your character? (No older than 35)
A small box displaying the number 0 seems to be your method of completing the question now. The next button is there when you finish.
You click the box and it lists the numbers between 0-35. You think a little bit more about this one before continuing. Confused on why you could pick your age.
Question #6: What is your character’s main strength? Choose wisely.
Six buttons were displayed, each with a little "i" for information beside them.
They read, Intelligence, Strength, Endurance, Luck, Dexterity and Random.
You think back to the class you choose and got worried because you might have spelt it wrong. You shrug it off though because you can't fix it if you wanted to. There was no back button and you don't feel like going through the entire creation process again.
You click your answer and continue.
The page goes blank and you stare at a grey screen for a while. You want to grab a snack but you don't want to leave if something happens. You wait for a bit long before some text appears.
"Character creation complete, please return in a week to begin playing."
What? You went through all that just to let it tell you to come back in a week? What kind of game was this? Annoyed you get up and grab that snack.
Even through your frustration, something about the game kept you hooked.
Guess you'll have to wait for next week.
