Weeks seemed to go by, and before Milo knew it, he had been in class for a month. His partner still didn't talk to him, but they worked well for the most part. He decided he would do half the work, and she would do the other half. She never agreed or disagreed with that, but when he handed his half to her, she turned the work in on the due date; he assumed she was doing her half of the work as well.
When Milo walked into the classroom today, it was no different than the first day; when he entered, everyone had their group of friends, so to speak, the people they hung out with and could relate to. As for Milo, he kept to himself. He didn't want that type of lifestyle. He was happy just being him. Today, instead of wearing his hair in a braid, he wore a beanie with sweatpants and a t-shirt with a black cardigan sweater. He looked different to Nora today: tired, worn-down, and out of it.
"Good morning," Milo signed with shaking hands. Nora nodded. He then grabbed his bag, and as he did, Nora noticed that he was searching in it for something, but as he searched, his hands shook severely, almost like he couldn't control them. Milo now gives up, putting his head on the table. Nora now realizes what he was looking for. Nora noticed that every day, he brought a snack to class and a lot, to be honest, and sometimes, he would snack on some during class. Nora goes into her bookbag and takes out a bag full of orange slices she had packed. She didn't know why she packed them, for she wasn't a person who enjoyed snacks often, but today she did. She taps Milo on the top of his head; he lifts his head and sees the fruit. Milo smiles. "Thank you very much." He signs, taking a piece of the orange slice and eating it.
The class now starts, "Now class, today we will be talking about different types of language, one that many people don't talk about but is important, I feel personally is sign." The class now starts to chatter and laugh. "Sign you've got to be kidding me, professor," a young man with fair skin and braided hair comments. "Who wants to talk with their hands? It's so stupid and unnecessary; why must we keep adapting to people who can't speak English or even talk? They have a phone. They can text us, or we can write them a note.
Milo Feels the heat all over his body. He stands up, now feeling better from the snack he had been given, and walks down to the first row of seats, " It is simple-minded people like you that should not be in a class like this, he says and signs. He now faces the young man. "You think it is easy for someone to write it on paper or text it? Hell, it must be easy for someone deaf or hard of hearing to read lips too, huh?" Milo questions while still signing as he talked,
But let me tell you something. While some people think it is pointless for me, it is life. You see, yes, my mother as well as myself are both of hearing, but my father and younger sister are deaf. That is right, they can't hear at all, and because of that, I got to learn to sign at a very young age, and, because of that, I don't just get to talk to my sister, but my father as well and my whole family can sit down and talk yes, it is with our hands, but it is something I wouldn't trade for the world. But people like you who expect others to learn your language, you refuse to learn someone else." Milo now drops his hands to his side and pinches the bridge of his nose. "Some people just don't get it. Signing isn't hard; people don't want to learn it because they want others to adapt to their language, yet when asked to adapt to someone else, they refuse. I don't get it. You expect so much from others but don't return the same energy to me. It shows how this world can only see black and white and not grow. It sickens me, for my sister and father are wonderful people who try their hardest to adapt to your world, yet you won't return the favor and learn sign. To me, you are no different than anyone else who says they will learn a new language, yet when sign is brought up, they make it seem like the deaf have other options and refuse to learn sign."
Milo now starts to walk to the door. "Sorry, professor, but I am not feeling it today. Can I have the notes, and I'll do the work at home?" Milo signs and says. The professor hands Milo a packet and smiles.
"See you tomorrow, Milo," the professor says, and as Milo walks out of the classroom, Nora grabs her book bag to chase after him, for she just witnessed the beauty of sign language. The way Milo talked about it through signing was something she had never seen or experienced in her life. His facial expressions and his determination to show the world that sign language was beautiful astonished her. He left her and the class speechless, and because of that, she wanted to learn more about the young man and the world he saw.
Nora now reaches Milo and taps his back. He turns around, looking at her, shocked. "Hello," he signs with a smile.
"I want to meet them," Nora said, signing back. Milo smiles with a little bit of confusion on his face. "Who my family? He signs.
"Yes, I want to meet them. I want to experience the world you live in and see the world you see. Nora signs back. Milo smiled again with so much love and understanding on his face that it took Nora's breath away.

"Sure, I'm heading home now. You are welcome to tag along if you want," Milo signs. Nora smiles back and introduces herself for the first time since she and Milo have become partners.
"By the way, my name is Nora. I'm finally glad to meet you, Milo," she signs. Milo grabs her hands and moves them up and down. Then let's go. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Nora." They now head outside, where a new adventure awaits them both.
