Nora's Voice
1. Meeting Milo

1. Meeting Milo

The world that we see is all black and white, and the people in it seem beautiful, but deep down, even beauty can be ugly if you look beyond the face and see the truth within.

The classroom was so different from what Milo expected as he walked through the doors and was welcomed by a crowd of people laughing and talking as if they were all old-time friends. He felt kind of out of place, but that didn’t stop him from walking around the room; as he did, he saw so much life in everyone.

The instructor now comes in. He was wearing casual clothes and looked to be in his mid to late forties.

“Settle down, class; please take a seat. Know that the person you are sitting next to will be your partner for the semester.”

Milo watched as everyone found a friend they could relate to or had something in common. Before long, everyone has someone, everyone but one. A woman who looked out of place at the top row of seats, almost like she didn’t belong there. Her long black hair was twisted halfway back, letting her curly long hair fall over her shoulder; she also seemed to be wearing glasses. Milo hiked his bookbag over his shoulder and headed her way when a girl grabbed him by the hand to stop him.

“I wouldn’t be her partner. She is a freak of nature. She won’t work with you.” Milo grinned a little as he looked at the girl who grabbed him; her beauty anyone would fall for, but he was uninterested. He yanked his hand away from her grip as he headed up the stairs he heard.

“Don't say I didn’t warn you about the freak.” She stated

Anger now ran through Milo as he turned around to come face-to-face with the girl. She had a beautiful, powdered face and eyeliner, her hair was curly, and she wore a tight outfit that hugged her body a little too well.

“It's funny how even the prettiest of girls like yourself have such an ugly personality.” He said with annoyance Milo now turned back around and headed up the stairs to sit by the young woman.

When Milo reached the spot, he put his bookbag down and smiled. Nora looked at him and said nothing. Milo then rummaged through his bookbag, taking out his books and a cell phone. He then placed them neatly on the table as class started.

“Today, class, we will be discussing the matter of different languages,”

Nora noticed Milo's Hands went up, and he started to sign what the professor said. Most people didn’t know sign and didn’t even want to learn it, but as the professor kept talking about the different types of language they would be learning. Milo's signing didn’t miss a beat. When he was signing, he had facial expressions with the sign that Nora thought was funny.

The professor is now finished talking; Milo looks up at her and points to her right ear, where her hearing aid is. Nora realizes now that he wasn’t just signing because he knew how to; he was doing it for her; she had always struggled with sound; it was as if she could hear voices and different sounds to a point, but unless someone talked to her slowly or a sound was super loud, she couldn’t understand the person or hear the sound. Milo now smiles at her as he signs.

“Hi, my name is Milo. Nice to meet you. It looks like you are stuck with me for the semester. I will try not to bother you too much.” His facial expressions were that of kindness and understanding; he was handsome with his auburn hair that reached halfway down his back, braided. His green eyes were stunning, and he smelled of spring. Nora smiled, then grabbed the end of his braid where the tie was and yanked it, letting Milo’s long hair unbraid; she then took the tie, placing it around her wrist. The bell rang, and Nora got up and left. Milo sighed as he got up to head to his next class. As he reached the last step, the girl from earlier laughed.

“See, I told you, pretty boy, you will never get through to her. She is pointless might as well give up. She is a lost cause, and from the looks of it, she doesn’t like you,” the girl said. Looking at Milo's unraveling braid, he smiled at her.

“Can I ask your name, please?” he questioned, getting closer to her face.

The girl smiled an affectionate smile at him.

“I am Cami.”

“Well, Cami, People who judge others because they are different are people I don’t associate with. They are not worth my time.” Milo said as he took another hair tie from his bag, braided his hair back up, and then walked out of the classroom. He didn’t get why that girl didn’t like his partner, but he wasn’t a big fan of the Cami girl either
