Chapter 22: Lights Out
Dianne and I went back upstairs and continued to work on the remaining patients. Since my skill [Cure Disease] was at intermediate level 7, I became more efficient and effective in curing the outbreak. Luckily, every healer in the room knew how magic worked and they too became effective in using their skills.
After we cured the last patient, Dr. Salazar offered us to have lunch with them and it was his treat. Like I said before, free food is free, so we happily accepted his offer to take us out for lunch before we go home and rest.
We went with Dr. Salazar and his team to the hospital’s canteen. Dianne ordered a medium rare chimera steak while the others and I ordered well-done steaks. Ever since yesterday, I’ve been eating nothing but chimera’s meat. The meat was so good that I didn’t think I would get tired of it.
Of course, I had an idea that perhaps chimera’s meat was the reason for the outbreak. I told Dr. Salazar of my suspicion, but they assured me that eating these kind of meat were safe. They still had microscopes and they ran tests on the meat samples before they were distributed as rations.
Their suspicion was that the disease might have come from another type of monster because the patient zero said that he was attacked by a bat-like monster five days ago before he showed the symptoms. The transmission of the disease could be like the ebola or maybe through feces and with the poor hygiene in the refugee camp, it’s likely the case.
As our steaks were served, I wasn’t inclined to take their word for it and take the risk and I checked my steak with [Cure Disease] just to be sure. My skill worked like a nanobot made of mana and it worked with the cooked meat and I found no signs of the microbe that caused the outbreak. Well, except for the common germs found in the air and they’re harmless.
With Dianne’s permission, I also checked her medium rare steak and found nothing. After we finished eating, Dr. Salazar instructed us to go home and rest for the day as he takes care of the report to Col. Medina and Gen. Arevalo. He and his team thanked us again for our help.

I went to the restroom to relieve myself as Dianne and the two bodyguards waited outside. As I expected, even the hospital’s restroom was gross and it smelled like shit. I checked each and every cubicle only to find out that all of the toilets were not flushed. As a mage with water magic, I did the courtesy of flushing all of the toilets and filling every buckets and drums with water.
I opened the small window and cast wind magic to remove the smell. Even after all I did, there’s still a faint smell of shit in the men’s restroom. I took the cubicle at the end and took a good dump. I haven’t taken a dump since the other day.
“Grrrrrrrr…”
I heard a strange snarling sound in the restroom as I sat on the toilet. It sounded like a dog, but not quite. It’s more like a sound of monstrous dog that you hear in a horror movie. I quickly washed myself and stood up as I heard it again. I took out my staff from my inventory.
Although I wasn’t afraid of the monsters, I was shaking nervously in fear because I knew that there’s no way a monster could get in with my bodyguards inside. The floor was wet and the sound of the monster’s small footsteps echoed in the restroom. It was approaching slowly and when I saw its shadow on the floor, it stopped.
“Grrrrrrrr…”
I gathered my courage and exhaled deeply. I kicked the cubicle’s door, only to find out, that there was nothing outside. I looked around and peeked at the other cubicles just to make sure. I sighed in relief when I confirmed that I was alone in the restroom. Perhaps I was hallucinating because of exhaustion.
“Grrrrrrrr…”
When I reached for the door of the restroom, my eyes opened wide as I heard the same snarl and it’s coming from my back. I turned around slowly while clutching my staff and found that it wasn’t a dog. It was a creature covered in a black mist with froglike features and its yellow eyes glared at me.
Acting on instinct, I cast [Chain Hellfire] at the monster and the flame passed through its body, leaving the monster unharmed. The creature opened its mouth showing its razor sharp teeth and pounced.
“GET OFF ME!” I screamed as I fell on the wet floor.
My hand went through the creature’s body and faded. The door opened and Dianne and my two bodyguards came in with their weapons drawn.
“What is it?!” One of my bodyguards asked and he roamed the restroom to find my attacker.
“Are you okay?” Dianne asked as she helped me stand.
“I-it’s a frog…” I said.
“Oh…” Their shoulders dropped as they sheathed their weapons.
“What? It’s freaking huge and…”
Dianne and the others giggled at my excuse as we left the restroom. I tried to tell them about what I saw, but the looks on their face told me that they wouldn’t believe me. No one would. I had no evidence and what will they think if I told them that I saw a shadow monster and it just vanished.
After I saw the frog monster, I became more paranoid when I heard a snarl in the distance. I knew that I wasn’t insane. Something was out there to kill me and it’s probably the Dark Lord’s minion.
“I want to check the market.” I said to them.
If that monster was still out there, I’d better be prepared and I need to upgade my equipment. Plus, it will keep me distracted to keep what’s left of my sanity. I wanted to go to a crowded area as soon as possible.
“Are you sure? You didn’t sleep even sleep last night.” Dianne said.
“I’m fine…”
Dianne took out a bottle of another potion and handed it to me. “Here. This should help you sleep.”
“What’s this?” I asked as I inspected the bottle.
“It’s a sleeping potion. Don’t drink it all, by the way. You’ll only need a sip to make you sleep.” She replied.
Unlike the other potions she made, this one was colorless and odorless. It looked like water, but Dianne wrote the word “Sleeping potion” on the bottle. I used [Observe] to see the details.
Potion of Drowsiness
Quality: Rank D (Normal)
Effect: Induces sleep to the user
A normal quality potion made by Dianne Duria. It induces sleep to anyone who drinks it.
“Thanks.” I said as I stored the potion in my inventory.
“No problem. You should take care of yourself and drink that potion when we get home.” Dianne said.
Even though I didn’t want to sleep, this potion might be the key to my escape, but I still have second thoughts about my plan to leave. First of all, it’s dangerous. I would be alone and if my mana runs out in the middle of a fight, I’m screwed. Second, I don’t think I can convince Claire and the others to help me. I think they wanted me to stay here. I may convince Dianne to come, but I didn’t want to risk her life. And lastly, I didn’t want to be alone and that monster might appear and try to attack me again.
When we reached the market, there were people on the side of the road selling their wares. Some of them have stalls made of wood, but most of them were sitting on a blanket with their wares. They were selling all kinds of goods like food, weapons, armors, amulets and other jewelries. They were also selling items like soap, clothing and other junk.
I asked some of the vendors about their prices and most of them accept Peso and game currency while others just accept game currency for trade.
Dianne went to a clothing stall and I went on to look around. I told the one of guards to stay with her and I took the other one just to protect me from whatever was stalking me. Even in a crowded area, I saw glimpses of the monster hiding behind corners in broad daylight and it’s not alone.
“Sir, you looked like you need a company for the cold night…” A man called me.
The froglike monsters didn’t have a blue screen unlike the other monsters. As the man tried to catch my attention, one of the monsters stood up straight as the crowd went pass through it like a ghost. I closed my eyes and shrugged.
“Sir?”
“What?”
“Do you need a friend for the night?”
“A friend?”
“Yes, sir…” The man pointed his finger towards the group of girls on his back. The girls were teenagers and some of them looked very young. They waved at me when I looked at them.
“Oh… I’m not interested.”
“If you’re looking for younger girls, I can provide them for you… Or perhaps…”
“No thanks.” I said as I walked away.
Apparently, even vaginas were for sale here. I’m all against prostitution in the old days, but these girls were desperate. I won’t be the one to judge and it’s not my business. Many of us did questionable acts to survive and fucking strangers for money was a better option than most.
I looked back and saw three men wearing military fatigues talking to the pimp and they wrapped their arms around the girls. I guess these men were just helping to boost the economy by purchasing their services. I shook my head in disgust.
“Quality weapons for sale!” One of the vendors shouted.
I approached the vendor to see his wares. He was selling swords, axes, maces and spears and most of them have a higher damage bonus than my steel long sword. There were also two handed weapons for sale, but I didn’t like it. I grabbed a sword that looked like a short samurai sword.
“How much for this one?” I asked the vendor.
“Ah… You have an eye for good swords. It’s called Wakizashi and it’s for 1 gold coin…” The vendor said.
“Did you make all these?”
“Not all of them. Some of these weapons were dropped by monsters. That sword you’re holding is one my creation. I was a blacksmith in Pangasinan and I finished that one just yesterday. I’m confident to say that it’s as good as the original ones made in Japan.”
“Really?”
I used [Observe] to see the stats of the sword.
Steel Wakizashi
Attack Damage [Physical] 24-25
Durability: 66/66
Crafter Perk Bonus: 10% Attack Damage and Durability
A sword used by samurai alongside with Katana. Made by Felipe Aranas.
“Is it okay if we trade? I have a long sword here and a steel bolo knife.”
I handed him my other swords and he inspected it. “Hmmm… Alright, just add 30 silvers and we have a deal.”
Although I bought the steel long sword for 1 gold and 50 silver, I guess it’s not bad of a deal since it’s an upgrade for my equipment. I accepted the deal and gave him 30 silver coins. I stored my new sword in my inventory.
“Thank you! Come back again if you need anything…”
“Do you have staves for mages?”
“I don’t think anyone sells stuffs for mages around here, but I know someone who sells magic items…” The vendor pointed at a woman’s stall on the other side of the road. “That woman…”
“Thanks…”
As I approached the woman’s stall, I checked her wares and looked for something that I can use. She’s selling rings and necklaces. Unfortunately, all of the items on display increases all kinds of attributes except for INT and WIS.
“Excuse me, do you have a ring that can increase my INT or WIS?” I asked.
“I think I have one in my storage…” The woman said as she handed me a ring. “40 silver.”
Silver Ring of Lesser INT
Armor Rating: 0
Durability: 10/10
Bonus: Increases your INT by 2
A silver ring rune-enchanted by Rowena De Asis. Increases INT by a small amount.
“Do you have more of these?” I asked.
“Yeah, but you can only wear two rings and a necklace. Any more than that won’t have an effect.”
“I’ll take two for 50 silver coins…”
The woman let out a sigh. “I’ll give it you for 75…”
“55”
“70.”
“65… it’s all I have left…” I said.
“Fine…” The woman gave me another ring as I handed her 65 silver coins. I immediately wore the rings on my right hand.
“Cheapskate…” She muttered as I left her stall.
I tried to ask the other vendors where I can buy stuff for mages, but it seemed that no one actually bothered to sell staves and mage robes as mages can easily buy these things in the Shop on the AFP officer’s club building. One of the vendors pointed me to a wood carver and he might help me carve a wooden stick.
As I found the wood carver, I noticed that there were wooden bows lying on the blanket, but there were no staves or rods for mages. I approached the wood carver as he carved a piece of wood into a bow.
If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
“Do you take special orders?” I asked the carver.
“Depends on the order.” He replied. “I’m busy. I got lots of orders from the army and if you’re not buying, go bother someone else…”
His grumpy attitude was similar to Eric and I think he didn’t care about his customers. “I need you to modify my staff.”
“A staff?” He asked.
“Yes, a staff.” I took out my novice mage staff in my inventory and handed it to him. “This one…”
The wood carver inspected the staff. “What do you want me to do it?”
I took out a mana stone that I got from the Troll Runt. “I want this stone on top of the staff. Just carve the top of it enough to hold the stone in place.”
He took the mana stone. “30 silver. You can pick it up tomorrow.”
“I want it now…” I said as I handed him 50 silver coins.
“Okay.”
The wood carver took out his knife and shaped the top of the staff. It took him almost an hour to do it. He carved three fingers on the staff to hold the mana stone. When he was finished, he inserted the mana stone on top of it and it was a perfect fit. I had this idea in mind when the book said the crystal core of a monster. What else could it be? It’s none other than the mana stone.
“Here you go.” The wood carver handed me my new staff. I used [Observe] on it to see its stats.
Modified Oak Staff with ‘Troll Runt’ Core
Attack Damage [Physical] 8-9
Durability: 27/27
Mana Control: 55%
Crafter Perk Bonus: +10% Attack Damage, Durability and Mana Control
Troll Runt Core: +25% Mana Control
A staff made of oak used by novice mages. Modified by Romulo Dela Cruz.
This staff was a huge upgrade. I tested the staff by summoning a small flame as I monitored my mana consumption. It definitely lessened the mana consumption and it improved my control over my flames. As I left the wood carver to his business, I looked around for Dianne and she was on the other clothing stall trying on some clothes.
“Excuse me. Do you have anything made of 100% cotton or silk?” I asked the vendor.
The vendor handed me a plain white T-shirt made of cotton. It wasn’t better than my mage robe and it only has a 2% bonus on mana control. The only thing that the vendor was selling made of silk was a woman’s dress and it has 15% bonus on mana control.
As much as I wanted to upgrade my equipment, I didn’t want to look like an idiot wearing a dress. Although it may level up my skill [Fool’s Act] and there were only a few people on the street outside the base, it’s still impractical to wear since the dress was too long.
“Are you done?” Dianne asked.
“Yeah…”
Dianne and I went back to dad’s house. I sighed in relief as the monsters who were stalking me were gone and I didn’t hear from them after we left the market. It’s only afternoon, but we were already exhausted.
There was no one home at that time and the two bodyguards sat on the couch as I went to the bathroom to take a bath and brushed my teeth. Each splash of water made me nervous as I constantly watch out to see if the monsters were going to attack me again. I didn’t want to be caught defenseless and in a tight space. Thankfully, the ghostly monsters didn’t appear.
“You should drink the potion and go to sleep.” Dianne said as I dried my hair with a towel.
“Sure.”
I went straight to the bedroom and laid down on the bed. Although I didn’t really want to sleep because of the nightmares, I didn’t have a choice and my eyes grew heavier by the hour.
----------------------------------------
I woke up and I was sure that I wasn’t in a dream. I noticed that each time I dream, the faint whispers inside my head were silenced. I closed my eyes to listen to the sound and I confirmed that I was in the real world and I could the whispers again.
My hand rested on the side of the bed and I noticed that I left a burnt mark on it the sheets. But this time, the bed had a larger burnt mark as I unconsciously cast a fire spell again. I realized that I was becoming more dangerous and I could unintentionally harm another person.
Even though I fell asleep in just a couple of hours, I was stuck in that dream world for a decade. It wasn’t a nightmare. In fact, it was a good dream. My dream was similar to what I dream the other night. Everything was back to normal again minus the fact that Claire and I had an accident.
In my dream, my mother accepted Dianne and she forgave my father and we were reunited as a family for the first time. I lived my entire college life normally while Claire and I dated. As soon as I graduated, Claire and I took the board exams and we passed.
After a five years of working at a respectable company, I had enough money to take our relationship to the next level and I proposed to Claire. The wedding was just a simple one, but we were happy with what we had.
Claire and I celebrated when we learned that she was pregnant. We have argued for a while as we decide what to name our son even though he wasn’t born yet. I wanted to name my son after me because I saw someone with a name ‘VIII’ on it and I thought it was cool. Just imagine how awesome it was that the name was passed eight generations. In the end, we chose the name Michael.
When Michael was born, I shed tears of joy when I held my son for the first time. I was there when he opened his eyes to the world and he stared at me as if he knew that I’m his father. We had good times as Claire and I heard him laugh whenever we played with him.
I was the one who taught him how to walk, but unfortunately, I wasn’t the one who taught him to speak. His first word was ‘Juice’. Not Papa or Mama, but juice. It was his first birthday when he said his first word. We invited our families and Dianne was drinking a glass of orange juice when she taught him the word.
When my son turned four, Claire gave birth to a twin – a girl and a boy. Michael was excited to be a big brother. Even as his twin siblings grew, I never saw a jealousy in his eyes. I knew that my firstborn will grow into a responsible person and as a parent, I was proud of him.
One day in that dream, flashes of old memories came back to me. It’s been a long time, but I remembered something that made me doubt my reality. The world has ended and I survived. I became obsessed with that memory as the days passed. I tried to recollect everything that happened; the blue screens, the monsters, my magic, and the Boston Tea Party.
I had an epiphany that I was currently living in a dream world. I tried to deny it and in the end, I gave it up and I dismissed the whole thing as delusions of the past. I accepted that world as my new reality. I was content in my new life and I was in bliss.
But then, my reality was shattered when I woke up. I just couldn’t believe it. It was the first time in my life that I would’ve chosen to live in that dream rather to live in this real world. That world felt more real and this life was a dream.
This world was a nightmare. I wanted to go back to the real world and I wanted to hold my children once again. I knew they were real. I laid down on my bed again and tried to go back to sleep. As I took out the sleeping potion, I realized what the Dark Lord was doing to me.
“Papa!”
“Papa, I love you!”
He wanted to fool me that the dream he showed me was better than what was real. Instead of the dark whispers, I heard my children’s voices. Their sweet laughter echoed inside my head as they called me. I pulled myself together and tried to convince myself that it wasn’t real.
God, help me. Please…
I tried to call God, but He didn’t answer. For the past few days, it seemed that He lost interest in me and we haven’t spoke in a while. Perhaps He could help me with my problems with the Dark Lord and I didn’t care if He smite me or whatever. I just wanted it to stop.
Their voices stopped and they were replaced with the sinister voices once again. I sighed in relief and I decided to spend the rest of the night meditating. After a few hours, I calmed down for a bit and the whispers died down.
“Thank god, we’re home...” I heard a voice outside the room and it seemed that the others were back from the mission.
I turned over the bedding to hide the burnt mark on it. I went to the living room and I noticed that Beth and Gerry wasn’t around.
“Where’s Gerry and Beth?” I asked.
“They’re in the barracks with the sarge.” Melissa replied. “I need a bath.”
“I already filled the drum and the buckets with water. Knock yourself out.”
As Melissa went straight to the bathroom, I sat on the couch beside Claire. “So what happened?”
Claire let out a sigh. “We didn’t kill that much and we spent more time walking than fighting.”
“You gained 2 levels. How many did you kill?”
“We killed around 17 chimeras, I guess. We didn’t get to loot them. The sarge said we needed them for food.”
“I’m tired. See you tomorrow, guys…” Eric yawned as he went straight to the bedroom.
Claire and I were left in the living room as we waited for Melissa to finish in the bathroom. We kept stealing glances at each other, but none of us could find the words to say. With nothing else to do, I went back to the bedroom and sat on the bed.
As I meditated on the bed with my eyes closed, the door made a shrieking sound. I opened my eyes and I saw Claire closed the door and pressed the lock on the door knob. She removed her breastplate and her leather armor.
Without saying a word, I stood up. I leaned towards her and wrapped my arms around her waist. She didn’t try to resist as our lips met once again. Her hand touched my face and our eyes closed. It’s only been hours since we last met and yet, that kiss felt like we didn’t see each other for years.
She pulled her head away and laughed. “You kiss like a girl.”
Claire responded with an even more aggressive kiss. I was dazed when her tongue invaded my mouth and I tried to fight back. I wanted to pull out, but her arms prevented me from doing so. I pushed her down to the bed and removed her shirt.
Our lips locked once again as she struggled to unbutton my pants. When she pulled down my pants, I held her wrist to pin her and kissed her neck. She moaned with pleasure as my lips went down to explore her body.
Her moans were driving me wild. She was lying on the bed and her breathing was ragged. I pulled down her shorts along with her underwear. I forced her legs to open for me and she lifted her hips to meet my mouth.
Claire pulled my hair while my tongue explored her. She writhed in pleasure and moaned as the warm liquid gushed to my face. I didn’t stop from there and I continued to devour her. Without a warning, she sat up and her delicate fingers caressed my erect member. I looked her in the eyes, she didn’t need to say another word. Her eyes were begging me for more.
“Open Inventory Screen.” Claire said, taking a condom from her inventory.
I pushed her down on the bed again and she let me take the lead. When my member went inside, her nails dug into my back and her breathing fell short. My member was aching for a release, her inside felt so good.
I tried my best to hold back my orgasm as I continued to thrust my hips. Her legs wrapped around me tightly as she convulsed in her throes of pleasure. Her inside tightened and gripped my member like a snake choking its prey. I felt the strength left my body as my member finally got its long awaited release.
I fell down on the bed and I tried to catch my breath. Claire kissed me on my cheek and rested her head on my arm. As I felt her warm breath on my skin, she fell asleep with her arm on my chest.
----------------------------------------
If I haven’t seen that dream where we would be married and everything, I wouldn’t believe it. But now, there’s no doubt in my mind that she does feel the same way as I did. I carefully lifted her head and made sure not to disturb her sleep. I placed my lips on her forehead and kissed her for the last time.
My two bodyguards were sitting on the couch and they were playing cards.
“Where are you going?” Asked one of the guards.
“I’m going out for a walk. I need some air. You coming?” I asked.
“This time at midnight?” He said.
I nodded. “Fine…”
It took us a while to reach the east side of the base. It was dark, but the half-moon in the sky gave a dim light. Luckily, I found out that the walls in the east had a lesser amount of guards. My two bodyguards were still following me as I tried to find a part of the wall with the least guards roaming around.
I didn’t have a plan on how to leave, but I decided to improvise on my way out. There was a small campfire on the top of the wall, illuminating the rest of the area. When I reached the wall, I used my magic to snuff out the fire and the area was covered in darkness.
“What the…”
Since their eyes were still adjusting to the darkness, I used this opportunity to try out my new spell in order to escape. I grabbed their shoulders and spread my mana throughout their body. Instead of a choke hold, I used my mana to block off the blood supply in their carotid arteries. Within seconds, the two of them fell on the floor.
They weren’t dead. They’re just unconscious. I didn’t feel the need to kill them since they were just doing their job to babysit me and I wouldn’t hold it against them.
*DING!*

MP Cost: ???
After I read the message, I swiped off the blue screen and I made a hole in the wall big enough, so that I could crawl into it. I cast [Earth Manipulation] again and sealed off the wall.
Finally, I was out of the base. As I walked through the silent streets, I noticed that there were no monsters were in sight. Perhaps it was the effect of over hunting of monsters in this area. I took out my staff from my inventory and continued my journey to the east.
It was already morning when I reached the borders of the city. I was surprised when I saw the clear water of Marikina River. Before the apocalypse, the river was polluted and now, you could almost see the bottom of the river. The bridge was heavily damaged by the earthquake, so I was careful on my steps as I crossed it.
You see, one of the reasons I left Camp Aguinaldo was because of a strange feeling that’s been eating me ever since the beginning. I wanted to find out what happened to Jen and my mother. I had that feeling you get when you left a light switched on or a door open. I felt the need for closure, so that I could move on. I will try my best to go back to Claire. Maybe she’ll try to follow me and leave the base, but I don’t think my father would ever let her and the others to leave, especially Dianne.
To tell you the truth, I had doubts that I can go back alive after I find my family. If I ever come back, I would be changed, but not necessarily for good. Perhaps it’s better for me to leave and give Claire a better chance in life. After all, I’m just a guy who went insane for bad mouthing the Devil. I was afraid that in time, I would hurt her or worse, I’ll be the cause of her death.
I'm not afraid anymore. I don't care if the Dark Lord sends one of his minions again or make up a more fucked up dream.
I pulled myself together as I reached the city of Pasig. I looked around and saw a crowd of monsters roaming around the highway. I stopped on my track and tried to think of my next move.
“Leave Party.”
You left Boston Tea Party
Boston Tea Party was disbanded.
END OF ARC 1
