Act 2 - Chapter 20 - Memories

Y/n stood alone in a desolate white corridor. Gun in hand, he’d said his goodbyes to Epsilon who had made a break for the rooftop above the floor he was on now to escape.

All hell was currently breaking loose with both gangs fighting, one trying to advance and the other attempting to hold the line. Epsilon had given Y/n the choice to come with him, but he declined. Chloe was the only thing on his mind. For as long as she was breathing, he couldn’t escape from this purgatory.

“Chloe’s got to be here somewhere! Epsilon said she’d be here!” mumbled Y/n, who cursed at Epsilon in the corner of his mind.

Equipped with a single pistol and a Kevlar chest plate, he sluggishly surveyed the corridor in front of him before laying his eyes on a pair of people, one with distinct orange hair.

They were currently located in a high-rise building, Epsilon making a fast escape towards the top floor in order to access his way out, a helicopter.

Unable to stop himself, Y/n immediately started shooting at the pair, who had turned into the long corridor which they had to pass through to get to the next flight of stairs, with Y/n blocking their path in the open.

Quickly hiding behind the two walls at the entrance to the corridor, Lucas observed Chloe and then looked at himself, a look of relief upon both of their faces. Thankfully whoever had shot at them had terrible aim, the distance between them and the gunman had only been 10 or metres.

Chloe held up her hand and performed a countdown before the two of them swung out and shot the person in front of them twice in the chest, the receiver being thrown to the ground by the double impact.

Rushing forward, Chloe took the lead, gun in hand as she looked towards the face of the combatant, who was groaning in pain, holding his hand against his chest.

The small girl stood still for a few seconds, her mouth opening, and then closing shut again, unsure of what to say in the heat of the moment.

Clank. Chloe’s gun dropped from her hands as they started to tremble. Beads of tears running down her face, she fell to her knees and grasped at the person on the floor, locking them into a tight hug.

“Oi Chloe, what are you doing? If we don’t go now, Epsilon’s going to get away!” shouted Lucas as he worriedly shouted at the girl.

“Go without me.” She quietly mumbled, staying in her still position.

“What? What about what you said earlier? About how you’d kill Epsilon before I could?” queried Lucas, a befuddled expression painting his countenance.

No reply.

Waiting a few more seconds, Lucas became enraged, “Arrgh, Whatever! Do what you want! Means I have one less competitor anyways!” before storming down the corridor.

As he reached the end, a loud thud erupted from behind him. Looking over his shoulder he found Chloe lying on the ground, a silver knife lodged inside her stomach whilst the man she had been grasping was slowly beginning to laugh.

Lucas, torn between letting Chloe die in front of him and potentially letting Epsilon go, stood silently for a few seconds, his mouth agape.

Making his mind up, he rushed over to the man who was four or so metres away and turned him around, punching him in the face.

“Just who the fuck do you think you are?” distressfully questioned Y/n, who had been rudely taken out of his state of joy. Fumbling around with the gun he’d dropped on the ground, he quickly sat up and aimed it at the man in front of him.

BANG! The young man fell flat on the ground, crimson blood splattered behind him as a hole was made in his forehead.

Quickly dealing with the issue that had appeared, he knelt down and flipped Chloe over, seeing the wound that had appeared in her abdomen. She had a confused expression, appearing unable to comprehend the events that had just occurred.

Then, a series of load explosions erupted, the roof collapsing in on him and Chloe, who had been below him at the time.

A familiar sensation erupted Lucas, his vision blurred, deep breaths of air burning his lungs. However, another unfamiliar pain showed itself to him. Looked down towards his own abdomen, three metal poles had impaled him, stopping a few inches away from Chloe’s body.

Blood seeped down the dusty metal poles and dripped onto Chloe, melding with her own blood as she uncomfortably groaned, her eyes fluttering open to see the sight before her.

Lucas was on top of her, rumble all around them. It seemed to Chloe that she’d managed to escape from any potentially life ending injuries, apart from the stab wound located upon her stomach. Time was already escaping from her; she knew she didn’t have long.

Aside from that issue, she looked up towards Lucas, her eyes dilating to see the comrade above her had shielded her from several rocks and poles. Three crimson rods stuck out of his stomach, blood leaking from his lips as well as he stared at the girl below him.

Before Chloe could say anything, a new pair of feet had sounded out not too far from him.

“How wonderful. Epsilon, that slut’s child and that annoying brat who murdered my son, all dead in one fell swoop. The explosives I planted on his helicopter really did the trick! Too bad that I’d already bribed his sworn righthand man over to my side to gain access to this facility.” Laughed out a familiar voice.

Lucas’s unfocused eyes dilated from hearing the words that had came out from the man’s mouth. He understood Epsilon, and there was no way he killed the Boss’s son so that had to be... Chloe. So that meant he was “that slut’s child”?

The wind howled as the man stood atop of the mountain of rubble, he continued speaking to himself. “How perfect! Lucas, was his name? Even though he came from her, I still got some use out of the kid. Pinning all the blame on Epsilon was the easiest thing I’d ever done! He took my words at face value! Serves the offspring of that lying bitch right! How dare she cheat on me! My men would never touch my woman!”

The man who wore a dark purple suit and tie, gloated with joy, walking over to the edge of the building to take in the sun that was sinking into the horizon.

Chloe looked up towards Lucas, who had his eyes trained upon the man who was about a metre or two away from him, body shaking with anger as he reached for the gun beside him.

His arms trembling, Lucas attempted to aim his pistol at the man, Chloe saw his attempt and thus held the man’s hands to steady the weapon.

It was the least she could do for him at this point. BANG. The bullet strayed off path and only managed to hit the man in the shoulder, who let out a sharp groan.

But that was all they needed. The man started to lose his balance, finally falling off the side of the skyscraper, his screams erupting from his mouth as he plummeted down the ground.

Dropping the gun that was in his grasp, Lucas fell onto his back and rested for a second before looking down at Chloe.

“Well, I guess we’ve both accomplished our goals now.... revenge is ours.” He solemnly said. Hand on his chest, he curiously touched the poles embedded in his chest, recoiling in pain.

“This is it for you it seems.” Chloe sighed, it seemed she’d lose another valuable comrade. No, friend.

“Don’t forget about yourself, that stab wound is no joke!” Lucas laughed, then coughed out in pain, blood spurting onto the ground in front of him.

His eyes wondered to a large rock beside him and then to the girl in front of him. Would it be too much to ask?

“Hey Chloe? You know when I told you about the incident when I was younger? Use that rock to kill me... ” he requested, his eyes moving over to Chloe to gauge her reaction.

“I... want to feel my mother’s pain when I killed her...” he explained, his voice dripping with guilt as he pointed at the large rock.

Chloe stared at the rock he was pointing at and then back to the man in front of her. She nodded slowly and walked over to it. Who was she to stop him from getting what he wanted? What would it matter to have one more death on her hands?

Bending down to pick up the rock, she heard a loud thud. Lucas laid still on the rubble next to him, his eyes clouded as blood flowed from his body.

“Seems like you couldn’t hold out long enough.” She sighed and looked out towards the horizon, the sun slowly disappearing.

Then she franticly became alert and started to search for another body, before finding a head encased in rubble, digging a disfigured, bloody, body out from the stone tomb he had been sleeping in.

There was Y/n in all his glory. A bullet wound upon his forehead, a few limbs missing from his body and his legs a crushed mess.

But that wasn’t what Chloe saw. No. A brilliant smiling teen who stood by her for most of her time on this planet.

Pulling Y/n’s body over to the ledge of the skyscraper, they both sat at the edge of it, legs dangling in the air as Y/n’s warm blood spread onto Chloe’s shoulder as his head laid upon it.

What was left for her in this world?

At least for now, she wanted to spend some more time with the person she cherished the most.

Even if that time was the last she had left.
