Prologue

Worried about your child's future? Unsure if they'll be able to find a career that will allow them to utilize their unique talents to the fullest? Or do you simply have too much on your plate to be able to give your child the care they need to succeed in this world? Then sign them up for the No Child Left Behind career program!

The folks over at NCLB are dedicated to making sure each and every one of our citizens is able to find a career path suitable for them! Your child will start at one of our general education facilities, where they will be given a basic education as well as tested on what skills and abilities they can use to best benefit both themselves and our beloved nation! After 6 months of general education, they will be assigned the career they will follow the rest of their lives. Depending on their job path, they may be sent to receive more specialized education or they may be directly sent to learn the job on site with hands on experience! Studies have shown that many children learn better with experience than a classroom education, and any time spent sitting in a classroom is time not spent serving our nation.

The NCLB has an incredible variety of jobs available for your child. Many applicants have the honor of joining our military as combat engineers and foot soldiers, defending our nation from the heathens living beyond our borders. Others will be able to work as research assistants, whether helping with magical research alongside the clergy or technological breakthroughs from one of the many research institutions partnered with the NCLB. The younger ones with plenty of potential may be scouted by high ranking officials to become apprentices, learning the workings of the nation from a young age directly in the homes and workplaces where our nation is run. Children with magical potential may be able to join the mage corps, working directly under the royal family as loyal and elite soldiers who protects our nation from its enemies both within and without!

No matter which exciting career path your child will be chosen for, they will be able to serve their nation in ways the rest of us can only dream of! So sign up your child for the No Child Left Behind career program today!

Lucille read the colorful informational pamphlet, folded up in her hands. A welcome distraction from the boredom as she waits for the others to fill the room. It's graduation and career assignment day here at the NCLB 14th general education facility, and almost time for her and the other prospectives to find out what career will ruin the rest of their lives. Lucille observes everyone entering the room, no expression on her face as she takes stock on everyone who's graduating with her.

Nobody under the age of ten, Lucille thinks, so there won't be any 'personal assistants' or 'apprentices.' Most of the people here are older and male, so there'll be plenty of meat shields heading out to the border conflicts. I wonder if father will be happy about that.

The room is mostly silent, with a somber atmosphere that wouldn't be out of place at a funeral. The prospectives take their seats one by one, silent except for the occasional muffled crying. Likely coming from prospectives who know they failed their placement exams and have no hope at getting one of the rare jobs where they won't be treated as a disposable resource or research material. For them, this ceremony is nothing but a prolonged death sentence, the only uncertainty being what horrible end they'll face.

Even those sounds are quieted when the doors near the front of the room open up and the principal walks in. Following him are a pair of soldiers who take their place on either end of the stage up front, as well as an officer who hangs back near the door. The officer is clearly a member of the mage corps, his position signified by the royal crest on his uniform as well as a single curved horn coming out from his forehead. The mark of a magically enhanced soldier that makes up the elite warriors controlled by the royal family.

The principal takes his place at the podium on the stage, pulls out a sheaf of papers from the folder he was carrying, clears his throat, and begins to usher in yet another graduating class into hell.
