Chapter 47: Transformation

Taking the sample from his uncle, Tristan eyed the vial curiously. The liquid had a bluish appearance, and a slight sweet smell originated from the essence of the Dracaena leaves. With a crooked smile, he turned to Jin and asked, "Do you want to drink half?"

Pushing Tristan's outstretched arm back as if he were allergic to drinks that made him stronger, Jin quickly replied, “No, no! Please drink it all, as long as you awaken your affinity the visit to Fanrir will have been worth it. That’s what we were here for, remember?”

“This kid… To brush aside an advancing potion of this magnitude that could easily push you beyond the Endurance Training and Strength Training Stages, directly into the Muscle Forging Stage… You are truly fascinating.” pondered the astonished uncle, with a smile in his face as he realized Tristan was in good company.

"Are you sure? We had a long journey to get to this point, and we almost got in trouble, it is only fair, you have at least a half.” Tristan insisted, he hadn't even participated in the battle against the minotaur yet was allowing him to seize it.

"No, we can't be sure you'll awaken your affinity in the case you drink it a lesser portion."

"I'll find a way to pay you back Jin…okay here it goes!"

Taking a deep breath Tristan tipped the vial in his mouth, the liquid sliding down his throat and flowing into his nucleus.

“How do you feel?” Asked Jin as he had just finished downing the flask.

"I'm not feeling anything..."

“You are not feeling anything but it is only a matter of time until your nucleus process the contents of the flask, stay weary,” warns the uncle, “Give him a couple minutes, Jin do us for and bring my nephew a chair before it hits him, hurry!”

Tristan's mind was catching a glimpse of the moment and trying to gather information about what was going on inside him, but it was very difficult to describe what was happening to him, as the changes that had taken shape within him had no physical form, and required quantities. However, one of the symptoms he immediately felt was in his belly, in the area around the height of his navel. At first it had been difficult to notice, but it had started to take effect just as the drink stopped wetting his throat. A slight tingle that needed the highest level of focus and silence to be noticed began to grow until it was impossible to ignore. This was a reaction caused by the biological blockades that had been erected around his nucleus since birth like all mortals, all this time blocking his affinity from flowing to her meridians and now slowly gushing out to the extremes of his body.

Dragged to a more private location in the back of his uncle Tristan's alchemy shop, he was coming to terms with his body again. Similar to a baby trying to walk for the first time, Tristan was aware that he needed to adapt to the sensation beyond the blood flowing through his body, as if beneath that layer there was still a new one to master and control.

“How do you feel?” Asked Jin, as the sky started turning orange above them.

“It seems I have another chest beneath my physical torso, another layer of it inside of me. As if I had another limb all this time and never used it…sorry It's hard to explain.”

“That’s…a better explanation that I could ever give when I awakened it myself.” Smiled Jin while Tristan was finally getting a grasp of what he had awakened.

With his hands shaking in stupor as the elemental energy finally flowing around him, he finally felt different. Looking up at his uncle he nodded, "I may be able to bring the energy forth, but I can't exactly distinguish which affinity is inside of me."

“By the way it is flowing inside you, I can already assume you’ll be satisfied. Try bringing it to the outside, slowly.” His uncle instructed, quickly tapping on his shoulder, “Close your eyes.”

Tristan shut his eyes and felt the atmosphere around him. Outdoors, with the sound of birds singing in the background, he could still feel the heat of the sun hitting his face, and at the same time he could feel something inside him feeding positively on his posture, but he didn't seem to want to leave.

"I can feel it flowing inside of me, I know I awakened yet it doesn't want to come out."

“There are people that have issues bringing the affinity forth with a calm mind. When the body has no place to express itself, it is hardly natural for your nucleus to process it. I should’ve known that it would have happened, you were never the patient type,” snorted Gustav Loriat, his fingers anxiously tapping the table, thinking deeply.

“I can’t focus in here, there’s just too many animals in the skies. The noise…the lights just get brighter and brighter. Even when I close my eyes I can see the red and my mind just goes on a blank state of perception. As if I'm forgetting what I'm supposed to do In the middle of it.”

“Well, if it is for any consolation…I have something in mind that may be able to help us bring out your affinity.”

“Do we really have to bring it out today? If you can tell it worked through the perception of a Guardian perhaps there is no need.” Jin suggested.

“My Sixth Sense does allow me to know it worked, however it is not that simple. Knowing your affinity is not a matter of curiosity, it is fundamentally required for one to know what ascendant their nucleus are starting to starting to give. So young Tristan may begin harvesting the elemental. When the both of you return to Sanctum, you shall immediately start the process of getting acquainted with your newfound abilities and seek the challenge for the Disciple step.”

"Another challenge?" They wondered in confusion.

“Aye. And as far as it is known the last amongst The Nine Steps to be claimed in cooperation. From your reaction it seems the Sanctum instructors are still gatekeeping information from the two of you…some customs never die…yes, you heard it right…there lays another challenge on the path of elemental warriors, however that is not important right now. I'm sure the elemental warriors in Sanctum will be able to explain more calmly when you get there. I'm a Guardian but I've never been anyone's instructor, and it would be problematic if I taught you something that ended up stunting your elemental progress in the long term. Especially at the beginning of elemental practice it is extremely important that everything is taught in the correct steps so that nothing is left out. After all it's only natural for you to be curious, but for the moment the only thing I can offer you is the opportunity to get to know Tristan's affinity.”

"Okay, so how do we do that?"

“Your affinity is trying to hide like a scared animal, and for that we must corner it as if it were. Many elemental warriors awaken their affinity through a physical reaction to danger, in a flight or fight situation. So to see the end of this we’ll have Jin push you in hand-to-hand combat until you unleash your Innate technique.”
