14: Team Meeting

Cyrus spent two hours in the psychological therapy room, during which she drank three cups of goji berry and red date tea and, at the enthusiastic invitation of Dr. Yang Xingyun, joined him for lunch in the staff cafeteria.

When she left, Dr. Yang kindly presented her with a whole jar of goji berries and red dates, saying, "Drink more of this; it's good for replenishing blood. You always look pale; you seem to lack vitality."

Cyrus reluctantly accepted Dr. Yang's kindness, carrying the jar of goji berries and red dates back to the rest area.

Afternoon had arrived, and the lunch break had passed.

Cyrus set down the jar and reported to Field Team Seven's training area. Whether as an official member or a trainee like herself, time not spent on missions was largely dedicated to training, with practical exercises like shooting and combat training being a priority.

She took the elevator down to the first sub-level, which was entirely dedicated to training facilities.

At the entrance to the training room, she scanned her iris, and Adam advised, "Trainee Security Officer Cyrus, you may use the training equipment in Areas A and B for basic exercises. Access to other areas is currently restricted."

Trainees did not enjoy the same privileges as official members, but Cyrus wasn't particularly concerned. After all, she wouldn't know how to use the more advanced equipment anyway. Her visit to the training room this time was to confirm her control over firearms.

Area A included a shooting range. Cyrus entered the range, found it relatively empty, and took a vacant spot.

"Please select your training weapon," Adam prompted.

"Standard pistol," Cyrus replied.

The metal table in front of her silently split apart, revealing a sleek black pistol resting on its surface.

Cyrus picked up the gun, pondered for a few seconds, disassembled it to memorize its parts, and then reassembled it.

She held the gun at eye level, pointing it straight ahead, and instructed, "Three-meter target."

"Three-meter target is set," Adam confirmed.

Cyrus fired without much aiming, relying on her hand's feel. The rapid succession of shots rang out, and each bullet she fired hit the target squarely, with none veering off course, all landing within the eight-ring.

The gun's recoil was a bit stronger than she had anticipated, causing a slight numbness in the web of her hand.

Unsure of what to make of her performance, Cyrus replaced the magazine, ready to continue trying: "Ten-meter target."

"Ten-meter target is set," Adam responded.

This time the target was further away, nearly indistinguishable to those with average vision.

Cyrus steadied her breath, raised the gun, and this time took a moment to aim consciously.

She fired a single shot.

"Bang!"

The bullet struck dead center, hitting the ten-ring—bullseye!

Cyrus's features relaxed, "Adam, fifteen-meter target."

She conducted several tests, gradually increasing the target distance from fifteen meters up to twenty-five. With each shot, her lowest score never fell below the seven-ring.

Her fingertips tingled, but she felt a refreshing clarity of mind, as if all her worries and pressures had been expelled with each shot.

Her proficiency with firearms was undoubtedly enhanced by her "Combat Instinct," but she also had a natural talent for shooting. With each round fired, she grew more familiar with the weapon, using the training as a way to acquaint herself with these metallic instruments of war.

Being proficient with a gun, having strong physical capabilities and fighting skills, Cyrus was no longer the unskilled fighter she once was. Amongst the security officers, she stood out as one of the more exceptional ones.

And now, she was an awakened being with supernatural abilities.

During that morning's mission, she had killed Swordwood and stripped him of his supernatural ability, "Shadow Shuttle."

Her character sheet now showed significant changes.

Swordwood had used "Shadow Shuttle" to escape the psychiatric hospital. His ability was of a low grade, and it seemed not always to activate successfully, which explained why he couldn't flee from the hydran.

Cyrus was curious about how one awakened a supernatural ability. Was it luck or something else?

Her teammates were astonished by Swordwood's awakening as an awakened being, indicating that such individuals were not common but rather rare.

When she had first arrived in this world, Dr. Huang, who was also an undercover agent for Mechanism Dawn, had mentioned that there were awakened beings within the Enforcement Department. He specifically warned her to be cautious around the head of the Criminal Investigation Division, suggesting his ability might be "Lie Detection."

It seemed that within the Enforcement Department, members' supernatural abilities and awakened statuses were likely kept secret, even from colleagues who might not know each other's powers and identities. This was why Dr. Huang, who had worked in the medical center for a long time, could only provide vague guesses rather than definite answers.

Regrettably, Cyrus couldn't find a secure and private place within the Enforcement Department to experiment with her newly acquired "Shadow Shuttle," and at home, there was Argentum, making it even less feasible to try out her new power.

"Shadow Shuttle" was a useful ability. If she were ever imprisoned, it could be a means of escape, much like Swordwood had used it to flee the heavily guarded psychiatric hospital.

Being imprisoned was a relatively good outcome; without capital punishment in the federation, there might be a chance to escape from jail optimistically. A worse outcome would be if her identity was exposed and she was "eliminated" by her former teammates.

Cyrus set the gun down and headed to Area B.

Area B was the combat training zone, where several security officers in training gear and boxing gloves were sparring. Cyrus wasn't there to spar; she wanted to use the training equipment to gauge her strength.

In the corner of the training area was a punching power tester.

Cyrus had read in a magazine from the first world that the legendary boxer Tyson's right-hand punch had a force of 800 pounds, while the martial arts icon Bruce Lee's punch was around 350 pounds. This data is closely related to weight; Tyson's weight was nearly double that of Bruce Lee.

"Let's see what's on the reading page, shall we?"

A simple punch power test couldn't reflect a person's combat strength, as many factors influence combat ability. However, it could indicate one's level of physical strength.

"What was my last test result again?" Cyrus inquired.

"Your previous punch power test result was 215 pounds," Adam replied.

That was the data for "Security Officer Cyrus," not her original self. Cyrus figured she should hold back a bit with her first punch to not exceed the previous score by too much.

She regulated her breathing, clenched her fist, and struck the punching bag.

With a thud, the numbers on the power tester soared, quickly surpassing 200 and settling at 318 pounds.

"Your performance has improved compared to the last test, increasing by 18 pounds," Adam reported.

Cyrus sighed internally; she had still hit too hard.

The original must have been a super soldier on par with Bruce Lee, possessing not only strength but also skill, having undergone rigorous training to become a true human weapon.

"Cyrus!" Lan Lan entered Area B, waving at her. "Are you training here? I feel off if I don't handle a gun every day. Want to spar? Don't let my title as a technician fool you; I'm ranked in the top ten in the Field Operations Team."

"Not today, I'm a bit worn out from the mission and not at my best," Cyrus declined with a smile. "How's Jiang Ming?"

"He's had his surgery, and Liu Kangyun is with him," Lan Lan said. "Did you visit the Psychological Therapy Office?"

Cyrus nodded: "I did. Dr. Yang is nice. He even gave me a jar of goji berry and red date tea..."

"He has a habit of giving away tea. When I visited, he gave me a jar of coffee beans, saying that as a technician who often needs to stay sharp, coffee could help me stay alert," Lan Lan shrugged.

"Are there many people in the Enforcement Department with psychological issues?" Cyrus asked.

"Well, with the pressure of our work, we're bound to face various issues. We live with danger. A colleague of mine had nightmares for a week after his first mission clearing exotic species. It was Dr. Yang who helped him through it. Having a Psychological Therapy Office in the Enforcement Department is essential," Lan Lan explained. "Unresolved psychological issues can have severe consequences. I had a colleague in another team who made a tragic mistake and killed a civilian. Nobody noticed his psychological decline... until he took his own life."

Lan Lan sighed: "Sometimes, people show incredible resilience in the face of stress, but other times, the mind can be remarkably fragile."

Cyrus pondered for a moment: "I'll try to avoid making such mistakes... Actually, I wanted to ask you about the process of becoming an official member. Can you tell me about it?"

"There's nothing secretive about it. It's an open secret that the same interviewers conduct the interviews for trainees applying for official status," Lan Lan said. "The interviewers are usually the team leaders. Just answer their questions honestly, and you'll be fine."

"Be honest?" Cyrus immediately thought of Dr. Huang's warning and the rumored abilities of the head of the Criminal Investigation Division.

"I understand, thanks for the heads-up," she said, her spirits dipping slightly.

"Trainee Security Officer Cyrus, please report to Field Team Seven's office," Adam suddenly instructed.

Cyrus was mildly surprised, but Lan Lan smiled, "Maybe the captain wants to discuss your official status with you?"

"Then I'll be going," Cyrus bid him farewell and left the training room.

Riding the elevator, Cyrus's thoughts were calm. In just a few days since arriving in the second world, she had undergone a profound transformation.

From a fresh high school graduate scrambling for part-time jobs, she had become a qualified double agent, her thoughts and actions fully assimilated to her undercover identity. She worried about this and that, had to be careful in every aspect, couldn't afford to slip up anywhere, and had to be extremely cautious in her dealings with others, weighing every word she spoke. It was mentally exhausting.

Arriving at Captain Shu Xuyao's office, the metal door opened.

"You're here, Cyrus," said Captain Shu. "Fill out this form."

He handed her a paper form titled "Application for Full Membership."

"I'm eligible for full membership?" Cyrus asked.

"You will be, once you pass the final interview. It's not difficult; you can do it," Captain Shu assured her. "The interview is scheduled for tomorrow morning at nine. Any issues with that?"

Cyrus had no choice but to agree, "I have no issues, Captain."

"Good. Once you're an official member, you can move into the staff dormitory, which is much safer than your current place near Anning Street," Captain Shu said.

After completing the form, it was nearing the end of the workday.

Cyrus said goodbye to Captain Shu and returned to the rest area to pick up her jar of goji berries and red dates. She took the elevator downstairs, ready to head home.

As soon as she boarded the hover train, she opened her bracelet to find several messages from Argentum.

"I went back to the port."

"Didn't find anything else. Encountered some troublesome gang members; they're getting in the way. Can I kill them?"

"If you don't reply, I'll take action on my own. You said I could make decisions, right?"

"They're dead."

"Ran into some smugglers at the port..."

"This time I didn't kill them. They were just smuggling liquor, small fry not worth our attention."

"Why aren't you replying to me? Are you that busy?"

"When do you get off work?"

Cyrus read his messages with a sense of speechlessness and closed the message screen.

"Midnight, at the Ruby Bar in the Portside District. The mission execution team will have a collective meeting to discuss the specific task distribution for the port bombing. Attendance is mandatory for all members."

The message was signed by someone named Red—a completely unfamiliar codename.
