What?

As soon as Nave heard that he wanted to get out of the room as soon as possible,.

But that wouldn't be possible. Not only because Rahesh was more than likely still at the top of the stairs, but also because this man had some form of magical ability and was more than likely was a very powerful person in this town, and disrespecting him was asking to be put into a dangerous position.

So Nave stayed in his seat and tried his hardest to not show a reaction on his face, but he failed.

He couldn't just let this man command the conversation and demand outrageous things of him. He had to make some effort to take some control for himself. Nave steeled his eyes and measured his words carefully before releasing them.

"Who are you, and why do you want me to kill the mayor, sir?"

The man looked at Nave's eyes filled with bravery and responded.

"You can just call me sir, as you've been doing this whole time." He paused. "And I want you to kill the mayor because he's in the way of both of our goals."

Nave could guess that the man's goal was to gain the mayor's position for himself or something along those lines. But he was interested in what this man had to say and how he knew it would benefit him.

"How do you know it would help me achieve my goals?"

"Simple. There's no record of you working inside of the mine, except people saying you worked there for a few days before killing Harry in cold blood and then framing Sergei for the heinous crime. Then you show up in his seat immediately after. You obviously want power, and people who are willing to go to those lengths to get it aren't satisfied with what you have gained so far. They always want much more."

Nave expected him to say that since Rahesh had said pretty much the same thing.

"Yeah, that may be true, but killing some businessman in his office with one worker in the vicinity is a little different than breaking into a mansion, past the security, into the man's bedroom, and murdering the mayor. What makes you think I'm capable of it?"

Sir smiled.

"It won't be as hard as you think. Charles is just a brat; he was sent here as punishment. He's just trying to make the best out of an unfortunate situation. But he lacks serious security, and I'll even help you along the way."

"How?" Nave asked.

"I'll provide you with a detailed map of the area; a few of the security guards have already been compromised, and I'll teach you how to pick locks."

Nave thought of a important question.

"Are there any consequences to killing someone so important?"

The man was impressed and quickly attempted to soothe Nave's worries.

"None that you need to worry about as long as you don't get caught. Even if you do I'll help you as much as I can."

Nave wasn't instilled with much confidence but he would take what he could get. He listened carefully and decided to ask a question he already knew the answer to.

"Do I have a choice?"

The man calmly and coldly responded.

"No."

Nave knew the answer would be no already because this man had revealed too much information about his personal business to allow Nave to freely choose. Anyone could tell that he valued his secrecy.

"In fact," Sir continued. "If you don't, I will kill you."

It was a simple threat but a useful one, and Nave wasn't naïve enough to believe the man wasn't capable of it.

"To provide more detail to your previous question. I'm the leader of the most influential gang in this area."

The author's content has been appropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

'Makes sense.' Nave now knew that this man's ability to end his life was not questionable.

Since the man was willing to give away information and Nave's life was being threatened and he was already being put in a suboptimal position, he decided to risk it and ask some more questions.

"If you're so capable, why don't you do it yourself?" He said it in the least disrespectful tone he could.

"I have my reasons, but the main one being that magical forensics has become advanced and my powers are known by certain people. You, on the other hand..."

He added.

"And the men we have compromised are incompetent, as most are in this town."

Nave sighed as he attempted to come to terms with his current situation.

"When do I start?"

Sir was visibly glad to hear that Nave was willing.

"You'll wait to kill him; I'll inform you when. Before that, I need you to cause some trouble."

Nave wondered what he was talking about.

Essentially, he gave Nave a rough time frame to accomplish various tasks, excluding the assassination. Sir said he'd tell him exactly when he wanted him to do that. He didn't say why he wanted Nave to cause chaos, but Nave assumed it was to keep the mayor busy and prevent him from adequately preparing for whatever was coming.

Before the meeting was over, Sir said something.

"Don't get it wrong, Nave; I am your ally."

'Yeah whatever. Allies don't threaten to kill each other.'

Nave didn't say that, though. He just nodded.

"You may leave."

Nave walked up the stairs and met Rahesh again.

Neither of them said anything, and they both walked back to the mine to finish the day.

Nave wasn't upset with Rahesh. The man probably had as little control of his own life as Nave did.

After the mine was closed, Nave went home and got a good night of sleep. He would need it. Starting tomorrow, he would be considered a serious criminal.

~~~
After another long day, Nave closed up and walked home. He opened the door and put together a healthy meal for himself. He ate peacefully. After finishing his meal, he cleaned up and stripped down to his underwear.
He gathered a black outfit and put it on.
Nave exited his small house and slowly made his way over to a known well building.
He had to be patient and wait for the sun to set all the way.
In his pockets, he carried three items. One of them being his trusty knife, and another item had been given to him that day by Rahesh. It was a sliver box with a small piece of pyr on the inside and a flammable liquid inside. It could only be found if you opened the cap that also hid a button alongside the pyr. The small box was made to start fires. The pyr enhanced the small flames the box produced.
The building was integral to the communication between Mayor Charles and outside forces that he seemed to be cooperating with.
Nave walked to the doors and kneeled down. He pulled the item out and began using it. This part of it was surprisingly easy to Nave. The item was a small pick-locking kit also given to him by Rahesh. He even showed him how to use it. To his surprise, Nave was a natural.
'It's almost like I was made for mischief.'
The door was unlocked and opened quickly.
Inside was more paper than Nave had ever seen.
'So this is what a mail center looks like.'
Nave wasn't exposed to much most of his life, so he was happy that he was at least seeing and experiencing new things, even if he was committing crimes at the same time.
The building was the only one in town and managed mail coming in and out. Disruption of it would be detrimental to Charles and his plan.
Nave jumped over the main desk and found a hefty stack of paper. He revealed his third and final item, an igniter.
The whole time, his heart was beating out of his chest, causing him massive amounts of discomfort. He somewhat managed to ignore it.
'Calm down, heart. If I don't do this, you'll be out of a job.'
Nave had zero choice but to complete these tasks or else he'd die, so his overzealous heart was of little concern to him.
Nave lit the stack on fire and quickly escaped the scene.
He was almost positive that the entire place would catch fire, but he didn't want to bet his life on it.
He left the area and came back minutes later, acting as a curious civilian just like many others did who happened to see the scene from their homes. The crowd, the men in red, the men in blue, and the raging flames confirmed that he accomplished his nefarious task.
He strolled back to his house and laid down on his bed, facing the ceiling.
Tears strolled down his face. Only one thought rang through his skull.
'What would mom think of who I've become?'
His heart raged and seemed to ask the same question over and over again.
