Myths from Garsuna: Theogony
Part 1: In the Beginning...

Part 1: In the Beginning...

In the beginning, there only existed three Makers. These three Makers didn't spawn at the same time, nor did they appear before or after one another. They simply always were and always have been. These three Makers were Apena, Maker of the Sky, Garsuna, Maker of the World, and Chosrgel, Maker of Chaos. Apena ensured that the eternal and immortal migration of the two suns and three moons never ceased as Garsuna molded its planet, Garsuna, into the perfect world. Chosrgel, on the other hand, sought to thwart Apena's and Garsuna's sculpting of this world, guaranteeing that the two Makers were precise in their efforts, or so it was believed.

None of the Makers were created to be anthropomorphic. Instead, they resemble the perfect form necessary to perform their designated duties. Apena presents as a giant, winged serpent with long whiskers, used to tote the satelites of the world. The Maker of the Sky's body is composed of a transparent, glassy substance, used to protect Apena from being so close to the two suns.

Garsuna, the Maker of the World, resembles a country-sized turtle that stands on hundreds of hands. Garsuna has a stone shell and lacks any recognizable front or back and instead is a perfectly symmetrical, circular being. Garsuna uses its hundreds of hands to dig the trenches and stack the mountains within its planet of Garsuna.

Chosrgel has a form that allows it to work unseen. The Maker of Chaos is composed of a darkness that is blacker than the shadows cast under Apena's suns. Chosrgel can manipulate its shape to be any size or form, as if it were made of smoke. Chosrgel always stays close to Garsuna, and when the Maker of the World isn't alert, Chosrgel makes its move.

Garsuna is very meticulous with its work. Believing itself all alone, Garsuna desires to form a planet that all the other World Makers will envy. But after a while, Garsuna began to notice that its perfectly molded planet had impurities. Infuriated, the massive, stone turtle that was Garsuna began to frantically fix the damage caused by Chosrgel. After several rotations around its world, Garsuna came back to the same spot it had just fixed previously. Garsuna found the same mountains toppled over, and the same trenches filled.

"CHOSRGEL!" Garsuna rumbled from deep within its forest of arms and thus, gave the Maker of Chaos its name.

From high above, Apena noticed Garsuna's newly energetic sculpting of its world. Apena's once gentle and quiet companion was beginning to make quite a commotion. Apena then untied its suns from its whiskers and surfaced on the planet of Garsuna for the first time to investigate what was distressing the Maker of the World.

"Is it you that destroys the pristine condition of my world?" Garsuna asked as Apena approached.

"Do not assume me to be your enemy," Apena growled behind glassy fangs, "I am but your only friend. Has something been troubling you?"

"If you must know, some Chosrgel disturbs our great planet. It tramples my mountains and covers my cervices."

"What is a Chosrgel?"

"It is evil, a defective being, created only to disrupt the natural course of things," Garsuna answered simply, "a force familiar amongst World Makers. The planet of Garsuna cannot remain pure with this Chosrgel present."

"I see no being on Garsuna but you, my old friend. I have watched from on high for a while now."

Garsuna slammed dozens of its fists into the soil, causing a fissure in its world and only heightening its irritability before stating, "regardless of if Chosrgel is apparent to you or not, it is here. I suspect this Maker of Chaos to live deep within the planet and rouses only when my absence is made."

"What if you had some help here, on your planet?"

"I think Chosrgel would be more hesitant if there were another watcher around, yes." Garsuna's voice began to sound less irritable.

Apena briefly left its companion to fetch materials from the sky. As Apena lifted itself above Garsuna, its glass wings created a harmonized whistle. Apena first grabbed stones from the three moons and then energy from the two suns. Using the lunar rocks, Apena crafted a giant, stone sentinel. The stone golem was created to have dozens of arms to aid Garsuna with the molding of the planet and three heads to be able to search for Chosrgel in all directions. Apena had successfully created the fourth Maker, Ruo, Maker of Life.

"I present you with Ruo," Apena announced as it flew the newest Maker to Garsuna, "allow it to be your sentinel, your eyes when you need more to spare."

Garsuna began to chuckle, an action that shook its world to the core, "you bring me a pebble from the sky rocks?"

"Ruo may be small, but it is fueled by the fire of the suns. Nothing will be as formidable or tenacious," Apena ignored Garsuna's disapproval. "Let Ruo show you what it can do."

"Fine, but if I happen to crush the poor creature, we'll know it was too small."

Apena spat a flick of fire between barred teeth before it flew off towards the suns, eager to return to its never-ending journeys across the horizons. Unbeknownst to Garsuna, Apena began to craft even more life. The Maker of the Sky crafted one hundred beings that were similar to Ruo. These beings were shorter, had only one head, and less arms. They would later be known as the Ruonians. Apena used the fire of the first sun for fifty of the Ruonians and fire from the second sun for the other fifty Ruonians, thus producing the paradoxical relationship between male and female. Along with the creation of the Ruonians, came the creation of Natala, Maker of Reproduction.

Natala is consequently related to Chosrgel because reproduction is a perfect joining of two halves, whereas chaos is the destruction of harmony. As such, the two Makers resemble one another. Natala's form is gaseous, like Chosrgel's, but it cannot expand or change its size. Natala appears as a fixed, shimmering aura of light. For a time, Natala travels with Apena, shielded by the light of the suns and going unnoticed until it was needed.

While Apena schemed to create a force of life on Garsuna, Ruo followed Garsuna in its pursuit of crafting the perfect world. Ruo took note of how every mountain was stacked and how every valley was carved. Once Ruo had learned all of Garsuna's intentions, Garsuna sent Ruo on its own and told the Maker of Life that now that it knew what Garsuna was working towards, it can patrol the parts of Garsuna that the World Maker did not. Ruo inquired as to what it was supposed to be looking for, in which Garsuna replied Chosrgel, an embodiment of pure evil. Without any physical appearances to use as reference, Ruo began its search.

After Ruo had scoured over all of Garsuna, it returned to Garsuna's Maker. The Maker of Life reported that there were no disturbances in the topography of Garsuna as well as no indication of Chosrgel. Relieved, Garsuna began to double check where Ruo had looked. Almost immediately, the Maker of the World noticed again, mountains toppled over, and trenches filled to the brim.

"CHOSRGEL!" Garsuna rumbled before returning to its frantic purification of its world.

Apena returned to the surface of Garsuna once again except this time, with the one hundred Ruonians. A little annoyed by the ruckus that Garsuna produced, Apena again asked its eternal companion what was troubling it.

"Your sentinel proves useless," Garsuna replied as Ruo looked to its feet with all three faces in shame.

"I foresaw this," Apena began, "Garsuna is a great, large planet. Please, take these one hundred others. I believe we can defeat this Chosrgel with numbers."

"Yes," Garsuna said, the pleasantness returning to its voice, "the more the merrier."

After Garsuna and Ruo had given the Ruonians the complete tour of the perfect planet of Garsuna, they began their work. Apena returned to the skies to haul the suns and moons, Garsuna placed the Ruonians throughout its world so that every mile was being monitored. The strategically placed Ruonians brought on an age of peace to the world of Garsuna. Garsuna kept its pristine structure and its Maker had to work less and less to maintain its planet. Garsuna began behaving in an odd way and started spending most of its time sleeping, the cleaning of its planet no longer a necessity.

Apena took notice of Garsuna's long slumbers. When the giant, stone turtle that is the Maker of the World was preparing for one of these such slumbers, Apena went to the surface of the world for the third time. With Garsuna in a deep slumber, Apena began going to each Ruonian, one by one, instructing them to start actively searching for Chosrgel. Now whenever Garsuna was asleep, the Ruonians would leave their posts and begin digging towards the center of the planet, where it was assumed Chosrgel existed.

The Ruonians dug deeper and deeper each night, towards Garsuna's core. Eventually, the Ruonians struck the lower mantle of Garsuna with an eruption of gases. The ground fizzled and hissed as the contents of Garsuna vacated their confinements. The gases that were released aerated the entirety of Garsuna and stayed slightly suspended above its crust, creating Garsuna's atmosphere. Having not yet found Chosrgel, the Ruonians continued to dig. They eventually struck another pocket of hidden elements within Garsuna, finding water. Erupting like a geyser, water flowed from the depths of Garsuna's deepest pit throughout the crust. Trenches became oceans, valleys became rivers, and Henric, the Maker of Weather, was born to displace this water throughout the atmosphere.

The release of pressure from the planet of Garsuna expelling its trapped air and water created an earthquake that woke its Maker, Garsuna. The Maker of the World immediately noticed that its planet was no longer still and arid. Instead, the planet of Garsuna felt moist. Henric pushed around the water filled air to reach all of the world, creating a pleasant breeze and Garsuna was delighted to see these changes within its domain. A planet with an atmosphere and water is far superior to a barren one. Garsuna approached Ruo to share its approval.

"What is the meaning of this?"

Ruo began to shy away, intimidated by the massive Maker of the World, before explaining, "Apena thought it would be wise to search for Chosrgel in its own home, underneath the surface. If we can remove Chosrgel from Garsuna, then your planet would be protected forever."

"A splendid idea, take me to where these Ruonians dig."

Ruo lead Garsuna to the base of the planet's tallest mountain. By this mountain was a pit where bubbling water, mixed with air, continued to flow. Within this pit were three Ruonians trying to dig even deeper. Ruo and Garsuna watched as the Ruoninans used their dozens of hands to remove the rocks beneath their very feet.

"It shouldn't be long until we find the center," Ruo began. "Based on what you have told the Sky Maker, Apena believes that Chosrgel exists within the deepest recesses of this planet."

Just as Ruo spoke, the three digging Ruonians struck an open pit, and fell into its depths. These three Ruonians were never seen again. Where the three diggers were once standing was the entrance to a pitch-black, seemingly bottomless cave. The Ruonians had successfully found the hollow, empty center of Garsuna. But unexpectedly, they did not simultaneously locate Chosrgel. A foul odor filled with malice and disease began to emanate from the cave, along with a hushed, disonant voice.

"The selfishness of the Makers creation of life does not come without consequence. As when Ruo was created, so was I. I am Kigulbisis, Maker of Death. All those that live are destined to dine at my table..."

Garsuna, taken by fear for the first time in its life, quickly scooped up two nearby Ruonians with a pair of its hundreds of hands. Garsuna then lodged the two Ruonians into the opening that was just created, sealing Kigulbisis from Garsuna and forever creating a separation between life and death. The two Ruonians used to seal Kigulbisis would forever stand as the lair of the dead's protectors. Shortly after the opening of Kigulbisis, Ruoninans began to fall ill and die. Garsuna promptly summoned Apena from the heavens to confront this issue.

"What is troubling you, my old friend?"

"The Ruonians are falling like the stones they are composed of. Following your lead, they dug to the center of the planet but instead of finding Chosrgel, they found Kigulbisis, the lair of the dead. Kigulbisis is somehow taking the Ruonians from Garsuna and putting them in its domain," Garsuna hastily explained.

"I see, I shall create a being that can defend against Kigulbisis's attacks. As for the Maker of Death, I believe what it wants is the souls of the Ruonians. When the suns burn, they produce an immortal ash of energy that is even stronger than the flames they produce. Our tampering with what the suns' burn has resulted in beings that mirror the life that the suns used to fuel."

Deep in thought, Apena returned to the two suns to harvest more energy. Apena began to craft a being like Ruo but instead of using material from the moon, Apena used rocks chiseled from the stone shell of Garsuna, the Maker of the World. The being that Apena crafted would be called Ninecht, Maker of Health. Ninecht was a being that didn't exist as a singular form, but instead presents itself in anything that is created on the planet of Garsuna. Ninecht combats Kigulbisis's attacks by controlling small creatures known as Inma that fight off diseases and viruses within terrestrial creatures. The only problem now was that Inma did not exist within the Ruonians, who were made from materials found on the three moons.

Apena now directed Ruo to begin crafting creatures of Garsuna that could be protected by Ninecht's Inma. Ruo crafted aquatic creatures that could patrol the oceans of Garsuna, avian creatures that could patrol the sky, and mammals and reptiles to replace the Ruonians on land. Apena helped by giving Ruo the necessary energy from the two suns and Natala began pairing the creatures that had opposite solar energies to maintain their populations. The Ruonians slowly died off, marking the end of extraterrestrial life on Garsuna, for a time.

Now that Garsuna's sentinels had been replaced with terrestrial creatures, another problem arose. Garsuna's new creatures weren't able to produce enough offspring with the guidance of Natala to maintain their populations. Unlike the Ruonians, the terrestrial creatures of Garsuna were susceptible to many ailments such as hunger, and thirst. The new creature's life spans were too short on their own. Slowly, Garsuna was losing more life to Kigulbisis than it could produce. Garsuna hailed for Apena to surface yet again.

"Do the creatures of your world not fare as well as the creatures of the moons?" Apena asked.

"My children, made from my own figure, have more needs than the Ruonains. I fear that the terrestrial creatures use too much of the suns' energy granted to them. Their life fire burns out before they can produce enough offspring."

"Then their husks require more kindling," Apena stated matter-of-factly. "May I?" Apena asked, gesturing at Garsuna's arms with its wings.

Garsuna nodded and Apena bit off several of Garsuna's arms using its draconic maw. Garsuna's arms grew back instantaneously, instead of bleeding. Apena bunched the Maker of the World's arms like a bundle of wood. The Maker of the Sky then used soil from the planet of Garsuna and water from the planet's oceans to create mud that held Garsuna's severed arms together. Apena then planted Garsuna's arms.

The bundle of arms began to grow green leaves as it absorbed rays from the two suns, and thus, the first plant was created, Qentin, Maker of Plants. Qentin is a bipedal tree that stands over one hundred feet tall. Qentin travels around all of Garsuna to plant seeds and propagate its children. Within several days of Qentin's creation, Garsuna had undergone another transformation. The planet was no longer a single shade of tan rock sprinkled with murky, blue bodies of water. Now, all of Garsuna had been populated with green plant life that sprouted with a rainbow of flowers.

"Qentin will give the terrestrial creatures food that will fuel their life fire for a bit longer," Apena explained.

"Thank you, my dear friend."

Now that Garsuna had been filled with terrestrial creatures that had food to ensure their survival was long enough to sustain a population that could protect Garsuna from Chosrgel, another age of peace ensued. Garsuna, the Maker of the World, reverted to its now normal, drowsiness. Garsuna hardly moved, instead it trusted solely on Ruo to report to it about the proceedings of the world. While Garsuna turned into a tiresome, sluggish Maker, Apena began to experiment with the life on the planet of Garsuna. That is when Chosrgel began disrupting Garsuna's world again.
