Chapter 1: Wandering Lizard

Days have passed and honestly I have no idea how long I’ve been here, since I lack a calendar since I live in a CAVE! Though I’m getting used to crawling around on the ground, I do however sorely miss my thumbs. You never know how useful they are until…well you don’t have them anymore. It really sucks to not have thumbs anymore.

First off I can’t rig any traps to capture animals or potential predators since I can’t get a good grip on anything. I can’t pick only the edible berries since I don’t have thumbs to pinch them and remove them. The taste of leaves and branches don’t exactly go well with berries.

Also this body is a pain to move around in, it’s large and hard to make precise movements with since I’m crawling about. I’ve even tried climbing a tree to get a better vantage point… I didn’t know trees could bend that much.

After all this time though I’ve figured out the general area I live in right now, but unfortunately there isn’t anything around, the bunny was a fluke it seems. I’ve eaten nothing but berries and anything else that looks edible; I’m seriously getting tired of this and would kill for some meat. Red meat would be a god send right now, I’ll even settle for some fish.

Speaking of fish… I look over into the lake nearby, there has to be something swimming in there… right? I look in again and stare at the water’s surface blankly for a while… nothing… there’s absolutely zero movement in the water here. What do I do now… my hopes crushed I can’t even get a decent meal out here! Completely dejected I let out a sigh, I’m getting tired of all these berries and fruits!

After weighing the pro’s and con’s, I wander farther away from my cave. The animals here might know I live here and are avoiding me, or something else that lives nearby. I seriously hope that they’re avoiding me, just the thought of something bigger and carnivorous complicates things.

I am getting used to the whole crawling on the ground thing but there’s no way I can fight like I usually do. That and getting eaten isn’t on my list of things I’d like to happen. I travel through the sea of trees; I don’t know if it’s a good or bad thing but I’ve found nothing so far.

I’ve traveled a decent way from my comfy cave while making sure to keep my bearings by not deviating from a straight line. Under normal circumstances I’d like to mark these trees, but that would give away the fact that I live here. Of course there are two major problems with that.

First would be the fact that other animals will see this and avoid the area. Second would be if there are Humans then being in here would mean they are hunting, leaving signs make it easier for them to find me. I would like to avoid being captured and put into a cage put on display at a Zoo. Just the thought sends a shudder down my spine, but then again I would be guaranteed food… no being robbed of my freedom is a definite no! Then again that would be better than getting killed or having to kill a Human. I may no longer have the form of a Human but my soul is still!

While I was lost in thought a fog slowly descended… great… now my vision is going to be obstructed best hide to be safe. I glance around and see a large bush and rustle myself underneath it as I watch as the fog grows thicker.  This isn’t good… this fog is thicker than I thought, I can barely see the ground outside the bush right now. Concentrating I close my eyes, I can’t rely on my vision right now so I’ll have to use my ears. All I can do right now is wait this out.

An eternity seemed to have passed with no sign of the fog thinning or sound of anything moving, then I heard an ear piercing roar. Oh god… there IS something else here and it sounds huge! Suddenly a gust of wind blows the fog away and I can hear what sounds like wings flapping towards me. It must be a giant bird or something.

Not good… NOT GOOD! I silent my breathing and remain completely still, please keep going, whatever you are! My heart feels like it’s about to burst through my ribcage.  My anxiety grows stronger as the sound gets closer and closer. Not until I hear the flapping move past me do I finally calm down. Too close for comfort! I’m not sure how much bigger it was then me but I’d rather not find out.

After a bit of time has passed I figured that the danger had passed and let out a sigh of relief. But before it could leave my mouth I hear a loud crash and the sound of trees being destroyed. Out of the frying pan and into the damn fire! The sound is definitely far away from me but to cause a level of destruction that I can hear it this clearly is insane!

I continue to wait until the sounds stop, then  I continue to wait around a bit longer. Nothing, not a sound, was that bird fighting something… or someone? After letting some time pass I quickly run back to my cave and start scouting about. It doesn’t look like that large creature was here.

Taking a better look, the water level in the lake… dropped… crap it DID come here! I’m going to have to leave this cave for now and find a new base of operations. Staying here would be suicidal since I know something bigger than me comes here!

Leaving behind my home I begin to wander farther and farther away from my cave and the sounds of fighting earlier into a clearing and my nose starts itching… What is that smell?!? I can’t describe how terrible it smells right now it feels like… it’s like my nostrils are being violated right now. Then I have the sudden urge... to sneeze… no no no NO! Attempting to stop my urge to sneeze I cover my nose with my claws and it subsides thankfully.

“HaaCHUUUUuuu!”

Can’t a Lizard catch a break!
