[Chapter 4] On My Way to The Otherworldly Town

[Chapter 4] On My Way to The Otherworldly Town

The wind breeze gently caresses my silver blue hair as I walk down a slightly hidden path inside the forest.

It’s morning.

The birds were chirping in the background, happily flying in the vast blue sky. The closer I got to the border of the forest, the density of the trees slowly subsided. Now, I can see the ray of morning sunlight piercing through the woods, illuminating my surroundings, adding a more tranquilizing atmosphere in this forest.

I was never a fan of nature in my past life.

Not like I go into one that often before but I have a pretty bad memory of it when I visited it on one of my school trips. Since then, forests were never a good place in my head.

But now, after spending more than a week inside this seemingly endless forest, I must admit that nothing beats the morning scenery here. It gave me these peaceful and calming feelings that put me at ease. I started to find myself slowly enjoying the day I spent here.

Although, of course, the fact that it took me ages just to get out of here still annoyed me.

Another few days have passed yet again after the first time I arrived in this world. Looks like my luck was starting to get better since I haven't encountered anything bad after the accident with the criminals a few days ago. Thanks to them, I'm able to find a way to the nearest town without having to worry over meeting any powerful monsters on the way or lost into a nest of an unknown beast. The map I stole from them showed me hidden routes that avoid certains areas which were marked as monsters territories or beast nests, making it safe to take.

Humming, I carefully pushed the bushes that were blocking my path as I checked the map one more time. If I'm correct, I should be able to get out of here in less than an hour which instantly puts a smile on my face.

It has been hard for me to walk all the way here for more than a week nonetheless. I fell countless times, couldn't sleep at night, anxious and scared sometimes. After all, I'm just a 16 year old inside a three year old body who was lost alone inside an unknown forest with monsters lurking around in every corner. I may be able to defend myself to certain extent but being alone here, especially at night, could really drain your emotions. There were even times where I almost thought of giving up, thinking that maybe there is really no end to this forest. But I dismissed this thought as soon as possible and quickly got back on track.

So to know that my hard work until now will finally pay off really makes me happy.

The feeling of achieving something, something I never done in my previous life except at the last moment of my life, I never knew it could be this pleasant….

The rumbling sound of my stomach snapped me out of my loops of thoughts.

I already got used to the big demand for food this little body needs every day. But the rumbling coming from my stomach always succeeds in making me feel embarrassed for some reason.

Anyway, I guess it's time for me to hunt.

I tried to feel the mana that surrounded me and focused on detecting any fluctuation. It doesn't take long for me to notice some change in the mana inside this forest which means some living being is nearby and by the amount of mana it used, it must be an F rank monster, perfect for my breakfast.

This is a new method I discovered when I read in the guide book that every living being emits mana. The amount of mana in the atmosphere is always constant no matter where you are. But when a living being is around, you can feel fluctuations in it which make it possible to detect them just by noticing these changes.

In contrast to [Detection Magic] that works like bat allocation and covers a large area to search, this method can only detect something in a radius of several meters around me. But it didn't consume mana which is perfect for hunting.

Trying hard to not make any sound as much as possible, I walked closer to the place where I felt the mana fluctuating.

Hidden behind a tree, I could see a horned rabbit quietly eating a fallen fruit.

I let out a disappointed sigh. Again?

Horned rabbits are one of the most common monsters in this forest. I met them a lot and I could say that they have become my meals almost all the time because of how easy it is to find them and defeat them. But imagine eating the same thing three times a day for more than a week, no matter how good it tasted, you will become sick of it eventually.

I wish I could find rice around here… back in my hometown, it's the main dish of every meal and I kinda feels weird to eat something without it.

Anyway, I'll just have to make do with this for the time being.

Let's make this over quickly, shall we?

The horned rabbit looks like it hasn't noticed me yet. I raised my right hand towards it, imagining a gust of wind so sharp and fast that it can cut through my target. Almost immediately, mana started to drain out of my body and, in a blink of an eye, wind magic shot out towards the horned rabbit and killed it without giving it any time to react.

I approached my soon-to-be breakfast and picked it up before cleaning it.

Other than my luck, my control over magic also seems to get better with each passing day. I can measure the amount of power I need to use so long as I can picture it in my head. I also managed to discover a few new things while I was on my way to reach the border of the forest.

First, remember the time when I used magic without incantation? I was wondering if I'm really capable of forming magic without a spell or a chant and turns out I was right. In fact, chanting a spell or not doesn't really make any difference in my magic. That was also the reason why I still managed to form a magic back then despite my poor pronunciations.

But if I didn't state or picture the kind of magic I wanted to form clearly, the effect will vary and more mana will be consumed.

I tested it out myself not too long after the encounter with the criminals.

After pouring mana to my surroundings, I tried to think of making a big rock I found disappeared. The first magic that came out was a massive fire magic that exploded as soon as it hit the rock and turned it into pieces. I repeated the same action again and the magic that was formed on the second time was earth magic, cracking the ground up and swallowing the big rock until it completely disappeared from my sight.

On my third attempt, I ended up exhausting my mana completely. Not surprising though cause that day, I already used my magic to hunt for food and fight with those criminals. No wonder I ran out of mana. But to think it caused every muscle in my body felt like it turned into jelly and made me not able to move an inch for half an hour, that was something totally unexpected to me. I was being too careless that I almost ended up being the lunch of wild boars if I didn't coincidentally recover on time.

Note to self, never exhaust your mana.

Anyway, I could only find one explanation to how I am able to form magic without any spell or chant. That is because of the blessing from the goddess of magic, Lula, which led me to the second thing that I discovered: Blessings.

While I know that all the gods and goddesses bestowed their blessings for me as a form of their support for my second life, I didn't really know much of how it works and what effect it gave me. I found an explanation about it in the guide book but it didn't tell me how to use it and I didn't really pay much attention to it either.

But I should've known it was way more useful than I thought….

The blessings from the goddess of magic, for example, gave me the ability to easily use magic however I wanted without having to chant them or learn them beforehand. Like I said, as long as I can imagine it in my head, I can basically use any kind of magic with all the six elements.

Moving on, there are also the blessings from Zyon, the oldman, I mean, the god of knowledge and wisdom. It basically made you able to read any information about anything. I just need to focus on the item or monster and the information about it will pop up on the board-like screen. It even tells me if something is edible or not, what kind of things I can use it for, the average price of it if I sell it, etc.

Seriously, where have I been? Had I known this sooner, I wouldn't have to constantly open and close the book of Beasts and Plants from the god of nature just to know which one is which. I could've saved an enormous amount of time too….

Other than that, I tried to use the enchanted weapon I got and I somehow managed to master it in a short period of time. I'm guessing that this must be due to the blessings of the god of combatant, Lupta. I can even wield a sword that is twice the size of my body without a lot of trouble. But it exhausted me pretty quickly because of how heavy it is.

I admit that in the beginning, I was too absorbed in finding the way out of this forest and reunited with my family which made me oblivious of what I'm actually capable of. I thought that even though I don't remember them, I know for a fact that they spend a lot of effort on searching for me to the point where they prepare a large sum of money for whoever finds and sends me back home. They must've been so worried and it didn't sit right for me to just take my time inside this forest.

But I really should've known this sooner. That way, I can have more confidence with myself when facing a more powerful enemy.

Well, too late for that...

Anyway, by the time I finished my breakfast, the sun had completely risen. It's time to continue my walk. I tidied up the remains of the bonfire I use to cook my breakfast and put everything back on its place.

I slowly found my way back to the slightly hidden pathway and started walking again. At the far distance, I could see an opening bursting with lights. That must be my way out of here.

It proved me right as soon as I arrived there. I found myself standing on top of a hill with colorful flowers covering the ground. I could see a river flow gently at the foot of the hill. The clear water was reflecting the sunlight, making it look like it's sparkling. Across the river, a vast grassfield can be found with tall and green grasses that slowly wavered, following wherever the wind blows. There are giant birds flying above the sky, disappearing and appearing over the fluffy white clouds. At the far distance, a series of mountains were seen, looking more like a wall that were guarding the vast grassfield and completed the breathtaking scenery before me.

I stood there with my mouth slightly ajar, completely stunned by the beautiful view in front of me.

Never in my entire life have I seen something like this, something that can only be found inside a book or anime, something that feels so…. Unreal.

It makes me realize that I really am in a different world right now….

It's beautiful…..

I quickly shook my head, snapping myself out of my amazement. This is not the time to be enjoying the view while my family somewhere out there were busy waiting for my return. I'm getting distracted here.

With that as a reminder, I took out the map once again and checked the position of the town. According to the map, the town is supposed to be on the east side of the vast grassfield.

I lifted my head to try to look at it from this distance. Because of the breathtaking scenery, I didn't realize it at first. But turns out, across the vast grassfield, standing on top of one of the hills that were surrounding the mountains, I could see small buildings and some windmills. My eyes widened as I started to feel myself getting really excited. That must be the Hautad Town!

I could finally see a town for the very first time since my arrival in this world!

And since I am finally free from that damn forest that feels like it's endless, I could try something I've been dying to do for a while now.

The distances from here to there are a bit far. It's nothing compared to what I've been through just to get out of the forest, of course. But I need at least two to three hours before I could reach the entrance. I'm only able to see it from this distance because I transferred my mana to my eyes, making me able to see things a couple times better than normal.

I told you that, with the blessing from the goddess of magic, I'm capable of using any kind of magic I wanted so long as I can picture it in my head right?

Some of you might be wondering, 'then, why didn't you just use your magic to teleport yourself out of the forest once and for all?'

Believe me, I've tried that so many times already :)

Everytime I'm too fed up with walking almost all the time and decided to take a short rest, I tried so freaking hard to find a way of using teleportation magic. Imagining myself instantly arrived straight to my family's house wherever that is, trying to picture my body disappearing from the forest and appearing in the nearby town, wishing to be able to get out of this forest while constantly emitting mana to my surroundings, I have tried almost everything I could think of.

I even tried doing different kinds of poses while imagining myself being teleported or chanting random things in hope it can give some kind of result. But nothing happened.

In the guide book or the books I bought from the store, I didn't find anything regarding teleportation magic. The only thing I managed to find that is close to teleportation is [Portal], some kind of door that could instantly teleport you to someplace. But it's more like an artifact or device, not something you could just form with magic, which leads me to the conclusion that teleportation magic doesn't seem to exist in this world. Which sucks.

In the end, I almost couldn't find anything. Almost.

When I think back of the time where I tested my magic to make the big stones disappear, I realized the magic that was form always related to elemental magic. Explosion from fire magic, earthquake from earth magic, that was the magic that was being formed to make the stone disappear.

So, maybe I have to relate it to a certain element for it to work.

Wind magic is fast but it will only make me 'move' faster, not instantly make me arrive at some place. Fire and water are way slower than wind so I couldn't really use it to form teleportation magic. Earth magic is out of questions.

But, aren't lights move faster than anything else? It could travel hundreds of millions of meters in a blink of an eye. Isn't that similar to teleportation?

So I tested it out in the end. The goal was to teleport in a small distance first just to see if my guess is right or not. I was so delighted when I knew I was right! It worked out in the end but it's so hard to control it. It instantly moved me to another place just like I imagined. But, because it's similar to running at full speed and suddenly stopping, I never perfectly land on my feet, resulting in me falling flat on my face over and over at all of my attempts.

But my little happiness of success quickly disappeared as soon as I realized I can't use this magic to instantly make me get out of this forest….

For the magic to work, it needs a specific spot or place where I would 'stop' that has to be visible from where I originally stand. But I couldn't see the border of the forest to instantly teleport me there and because of the density of the trees, I also couldn't use it to move to a far distance instantly without having to crash into trees or constantly hitting my face to the ground when I fell. That means despite my efforts on trying to come up with this magic, it's useless in the end.

Seriously, is it so hard to just let me enjoy a bit of happiness? Why does it have to come into this in the end??

But seeing that this time, after I finally got out of the forest, I could see further distance without trees blocking my views, I could put the teleportation magic I've worked hard on into a good use now. I will be able to instantly teleport myself to the town gates without having to walk through the vast grassfield for another three hours!

Hoorah!

Without wasting any more times than I already did, I quickly transferred a tiny bit of mana to my eyes, focusing on a single spot not too far from the path that leads to the town gates. Everyone will be alarmed if they saw a little boy suddenly appear out of nowhere and I don't want to attract any unnecessary attention. That's why the pathway near the gate should be perfect to avoid this.

As soon as I activated the magic, I could feel my whole body felt like it's forcibly being squeezed into a small tube and shot like a bullet.

By the time my senses came back to me, I had already arrived at the destination. But since I have only tested short distance teleportation magic, suddenly teleporting this far might be too much for my body because the next thing I knew is that this tiny body of mine suddenly lost balance and started to roll down the hill.

Gosh… can something go the way I wanted for once?!

Somebody help me!

I can help but scream as my body hits rocks that were scattered everywhere. My vision started to blur from constantly rolling and just when I thought I was going to faint from the dizziness, my body finally stopped.

I tried to sit down but regretted it instantly when the inside of my stomach felt like it had been turned upside down. Without any time to prepare myself, every meal I had from dinner to breakfast showered my own body, making me covered in vomits.

Ugh, why? Why do bad things keep on happening just when everything started to go well for me? Why gods and goddesses? Whyyy?????

While I was depressing over my unluckiness, I heard someone asked not too far behind me, "um, are you… ok?"

Do I look like I'm ok to you?! Seriously, why do you even have to ask that when I obviously just rolled down a freaking hill full of rocks and threw up on myself?! I'm already annoyed as it is and you just have to ask the obvious question to annoy me even more.

I turned around, ready to vent my anger to whoever it was that dares to ask that stupid question. But my word of protests which I planned to spout on them stopped midway. Even my annoyed expression as well as my anger suddenly disappeared into thin air. My watery eyes looked at her in surprise and, without even aware of it, my mouth was already opened. As if it was a scene fresh from a drama, I could almost see flowers flying in her background. The wind gently blew her beautiful golden hair. Her light blue eyes, the pair of pure white wings on her back, as well as her gentle smile….

Is she…. An angel?!
