Chapter 1: His Majesty’s Awakening

In a dark castle in the middle of the Chaos Continent, a bright pillar of light could be seen from far away. All creatures thousands of miles around felt a heavy pressure that had not been there for millenniums. Blue lightning danced in the sky, but there was no cloud. The night was clear without a speck of rain.

All mighty creatures hiding in every corners of the world could feel his presence. They felt his awakening from the long slumber. How long had it been? They were all excited. He came back! Their leader, king, emperor, savior …The list goes on and on. With shouts of joy, roars of triumph, screeches of gladness, they began to travel millions of miles to reach him. Their speed was frightening, and all other races living on the planet trembled in fear and hid in their homes. The sky look like it was filled with shooting stars.

They have to hurry. No longer do they need to hide. Although these creatures were the strongest living beings on the planet, they hid their power. Hiding it from the greediness of other races. They did not want to get involved in wars for power and territories, in shaky alliances that could break easily, or in servitude to kings and emperors. They only served one being.

All these creatures were what people called ‘monsters’, beings with the inborn ability to absorb and contain unlimited amount of mana and to evolve into something much greater. They were feared and hated by all races. However, he did not rejected them. He understood them and decided to forsake his humanity to be with them. In time he became a monster himself, the strongest of them all, and led all other monsters. On this day, Kurai Kodomo, overlord of all monsters, had awaken.

“Five more minutes, mom…”

‘Oh wait…I’m an adult now…that was probably my phone alarm clock…weird, I don’t remember having any song that sound like thunder. Those new heavy metal bands are annoying. Isn’t soft and relaxing music the best? Yeah?’

Debating whether to wake up for work or not, our overlord turned in his blanket. However, a soft and melodic voice interrupted his train of thoughts.

“Kodomo-sama, you have finally awaken!”

‘Huh? Who’s that? Am I still dreaming?’

Turning his blanket aside, the overlord look up with sleepy eyes to see a beautiful maid standing beside his bed. She was perhaps the most beautiful woman he had ever met, even models in his knowledge paled in comparison. White snow skin with straight silver hair. Her oval face was furnished with full petite pink lips and sharp eyes with long eyelashes. Her eyes were ocean blue with glint of light in them, making them shine in the darkness. She had the perfect body proportion. Average breasts with thin waist showing not an ounce of fat. Her maid uniform was classic, with black and white as the main colors and frills on the edges. The maid currently held a cool expression but you can see joy from her eyes at her lord’s awakening.

‘When did I get a maid? And why does she look so familiar? HUH? Why is Alena here? Isn’t she just an npc?’

Now what our main character was referring to was a game he played. He was never an online gamer. Instead, our main character loved those single player world domination game. Ever since he started working, he had stopped playing. But five years ago he did get hook into a game called ‘Rule of the Monsters’, a game where instead of controlling human, you would be on the other side, the monsters, and try to create your own kingdom in a world called Nova. He spent countless hours playing and ended up finding himself becoming king of all monsters. Standing at the top, his stats and gears were too overpowered for any of other races to challenge his kingdom.

Through time, the monsters under his command also evolved, creating an unstoppable force on the planet. Not willing to exterminate all other races, he limit himself and his army to a single continent, the Chaos Continent. It is located at the corner of the map, and although its size expanded to one-third of the entire world, no one who was not a monster dared to live there. Graduating from college and getting a job, it became too busy for him to play games anymore. Thus, he quitted 5 years ago. Although only five years in his world had passed, it was around five millenniums in Nova.

Back to our story, Alena was also one of the evolved monsters. She was originally half angel and demon. But after in-taking of dragon’s blood (her master’s blood), her power increased greatly. Already mastering in dark and light elements, she now gained affinity with fire. Her angelic blood was still dominant, however, and prevented her from having dragon horn, wings, or scales.

In the game, she pledged loyalty to Kurai and served him as his personal head maid. She was strict toward everyone except her master. When it came to him, her demonic blood can only feel admiration, love, and even lust. Being half angel and demon, she used to be persecuted by both sides. But he took her under his wings and gave her his protection until she was strong enough that other creatures began to fear her power.

“Where am I?” Our overlord blurted out.

“In your home, master. How was your sleep?”

“Heh? Uhh...It was good? How and why are you here, Alena?”

“I had been waiting by your bedside like always during these five thousand years of your slumber, Kodomo-sama. However, all of the other servants had gone into hiding. Although, they should have noticed your awakening by now and hurried back.”

‘Five thousand years!? But I went to bed last night at twelve?? Did I hibernate like a bear or something? Wait, bears only hibernate for a couple of months. Am I still dreaming?’

Pinching himself, our overlord felt pain and confirmed this was reality. Alena, however, was a bit surprised at her lord’s strange behavior. But her master had always been strange, like collecting every single enemy’s body parts and making equipment out of them. His sleeping periods were abnormal. Sometimes he would stay awake several years straight while other times he would sleep for hundreds of years. (Well, he was playing a game)

“Kodomo? why are you calling me that?”

“Because you are Kurai Kodomo-sama, Overlord of all Monsters.”

‘HUH? Overlord of all monsters?? Wait, Alena was in one of the games I used to play. I think it was something like becoming leader of the hated monsters of the land.’

“Alena, what is the name of this world?”

“It is called Nova, master, and we are currently located in your castle on the Chaos Continent that you created.”

‘Another world huh? I am not on Earth anymore? This is so cliché, like coming straight out of a light novel or something. Well at least I know who I am in this world. Wait, if this is a world came from a game, maybe just maybe…..’

“Status.”

A white screen popped up in front of him.

Although Alena was not the strongest monster in his army, as head maid of his castle and his personal maid, she was at least top five in strength when compared with all other monsters. Compared with other races, she can destroy the mightiest human hero with a flick of her finger, raid the most secured elven city single-handedly, and massacre a nest of dragons, which are one of the hardest creatures to kill in the world, in a matter of hours.

Now what made monsters different from other races? No monster was born a ‘monster’. They were all originally creatures with blood of many races in them. However, other normal creatures were afraid of them and called them ‘abominations’. In times, due to rejection and persecution of their own kinds, most monsters became wanderers. That was until Kurai united them all under him. Monsters had many different bloodlines in them, making them naturally more powerful than other races. Their unique feature, however, was their now unlimited mana pool, allowing them to absorb as much mana as possible and become much stronger.

‘For now, let gather some information first.’ Thinking that Kurai continued to question Alena.

“Alena, what happened when I was asleep?”

“Kodomo-sama, when you started your slumber, the lesser creatures…”

‘Oi oi! Those lesser creatures are still living beings you know!? Why is her tone so cold when referring to other races??’ Kurai shouted in his mind.

“Ahem…other races started to feel your hold on the Chaos Continent weaken. The monsters wanted to defend our land, but your command stated that no aggression is allowed without your permission. Thus, they went into hiding but not before putting up a barrier around the land of your Black Castle. The other races began to pour into the Chaos Continent and started settlements. Five thousand years had passed and they had developed into major cities on the continent. We, monsters, not wanting to involved in their politic and greed, hid ourselves and waited for your return, Kodomo-sama. For me, my duty was to stay by your side and watch over your body.”

“And did they notice my awakening just now, Alena?”

“Yes, master. They should be on their way to the castle. Your other four guardians will arrive in about 2 hours due to their travelling speed. However, other monsters would take up to a day to reach you.”

There were five guardians who were Kurai’s personal servants and guards. They all had enormous strength that can change the fate of a continent. Alena was one of the five. However, she remained at the castle to keep the barrier up and watch over her lord body.

Kurai look outside and noticed it was still dark. However, there were bright flashes from the on-going lightning. He sat there in a daze thinking about his situation.

‘I still can’t believe this is happening…I guess for now I’m stuck here for a while. But if this is indeed Nova from ‘Rule of the Monsters’, this fantasy setting is not bad. The game was pretty cool back then but it was still just pixels on a TV screen. Now I can experience a sword and magic world. Maybe I will find out what exactly happen to me, but that can wait.’

“Kodomo-sama, I know you just woke up, but we need to get ready to announce your awakening to the whole world and take back our continent.”

“Ehh? Why do the whole world have to know I am awake??”

“Of course they do, master, because you have come back to rule over them as their God after all.”

“God!? Hey! I’m just a normal Japanese man.”

“What is the race ‘Japanese’? Is that where you originally from, master?”

“Nevermine!!” Kurai panicked, “Alena, for now, let meet up with the other guardians first before we decide what to do.

“Yes, master, I will help getting you ready for audience like always.”

Although Kurai used to play the game a lot and probably still remembered all the passages in his castle, he was curious at Alena’s ‘preparation for audience’.

‘What are there to prepare? Aren’t we just meeting them?’

Nonetheless, he said, “Lead the way, Alena.”
