Chapter 7: Moonlit Rendezvous

Chapter 7: Moonlit Rendezvous

After the chaos of the tournament, which had ended in a tie when Ai Baoni's mysterious dark energy and Ha Li's perfect orthodox chi had collided and turned all the sect's spirit stones into tiny ge-de sculptures, Ai Baoni stood atop her favorite brooding spot on the Cliff of Celestial Ascension.

The moon hung in the sky like a giant ghostly pearl, its light making her specially-crafted black robes shimmer with an ethereal darkness. Her raven, now sporting six heads, tiny bat ears, and what appeared to be a miniature spiked collar, perched nearby, occasionally dying and resurrecting.

"The stars mock my solitude," she whispered to no one in particular, "like tiny points of judgment in the vast void of my existence..."

"Do you always narrate your brooding sessions?"

Ma Fen emerged from the shadows, his crimson robes somehow catching moonlight that didn't exist.

His body moved through the ancient "Tragically Destined Lover" sequence - first the "Crimson Phoenix Questions Fate" pose (right leg bent at exactly the square root of 365, left arm creating a perfect logarithmic spiral), then transitioning into the "Misunderstood Noble Young Master" stance (torso twisted precisely 225 degrees while remaining perfectly straight, fingers tracing the forbidden seal of "Complex Family Background").

Ai Baoni responded instinctively with the "Dark Cultivator Processes Emotions" series - her body flowing through seven different poses, each more impossible than the last, her robes somehow spelling out "whatever" in three different dead languages simultaneously.

Her final pose, the legendary "Teenage Angst Transcends Physics," caused several passing spirit beasts to question their understanding of basic geometry.

Their matching marks pulsed in sync as they held their poses, creating a perfect tableau of tragic destiny - their combined silhouettes casting shadows that somehow formed the ancient prophecy in ge-de calligraphy while simultaneously causing three lesser disciples to faint from the sheer dramatic tension.

"Ma Fen!" she gasped, her heart skipping several beats, twenty two and seven thirteenth this time. "I was just... practicing my darkness cultivation!"

"By talking to yourself?"

"It's a very good system!" She pulled out one of her stolen scrolls. "See? Right here it says 'To master the dark arts, one must become one with the darkness.' And what's darker than standing alone on a cliff practicing tragic monologues? A wise sage, Ha Muleite, mastered this craft and became an immortal hero - the Eternal Brooding Sage of the Seven Shadows!"

Ma Fen moved closer, and Ai Baoni noticed his eyes had that mysterious red glow again. Their matching ever-changing birthmarks pulsed in sync, causing several nearby spirit butterflies to turn ge-de and start reciting ancient poetry.

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

"There's something I need to tell you," Ma Fen said, his voice heavy with the weight of impending plot revelation. "During the tournament, when our marks resonated... I had a vision."

"Oh man, what kind of vision?" Ai Baoni's spiritual energy fluctuated wildly with anticipation.

"I saw the Dark Phoenix Demon Emperor. He was... he was wearing crimson robes like mine, and black robes like yours, split down the middle. And he had a raven with multiple heads!"

Shadows-Upon-Shadows-Darknight-Void chose that moment to explode and resurrect with a seventh head, now sporting tiny crimson streaks in its feathers.

"But that would mean..." Ai Baoni gasped.

"Yes," Ma Fen's perfect features arranged themselves into an expression of brooding intensity. "Our bloodlines are connected. The prophecy speaks of two descendants who will either unite the powers of light and darkness... or bring about the reign of eternal angst."

"That's so... tragic," Ai Baoni whispered, a single tear rolling down her cheek and somehow turning into a black pearl when it hit the ground.

"There's more," Ma Fen moved even closer, his crimson robes now somehow billowing in perfect harmony with her black ones despite the lack of wind. "Ha Li... he suspects something. That's why he pushed for that marriage arrangement with me. The orthodox cultivation sects fear the return of the Dark Phoenix's power."

"Ha Li is just jealous because his inner demons follow a MANUAL," Ai Baoni declared. But then she remembered something. "Wait... if we share the same bloodline, doesn't that make this whole romantic subplot..."

"No, no," Ma Fen assured her quickly. "The ancient texts specify that the Dark Phoenix had two completely separate bloodlines that were not closely related enough to make this illegal."

"Oh thank the dark heavens," Ai Baoni sighed in relief. "Because my heart beats only for-"

"YOU!"

They whirled around to find Ha Li standing there, his jade ornaments gleaming with righteous fury in the moonlight. "I knew it! You two are conspiring to bring forbidden techniques back to our noble sect!"

"We're not conspiring," Ai Baoni corrected. "We're having a tragic moment under the moonlight while discussing our possibly world-ending shared destiny. There's an important distinction!"

"This ends now!" Ha Li declared, drawing his sword. "I won't let you corrupt Ma Fen with your unorthodox ways!"

But before he could move, something strange happened. The moon turned blood red, and both Ai Baoni and Ma Fen's marks began to glow with unprecedented power.

"What's happening?" Ha Li demanded.

"I don't know," Ai Baoni admitted, "but it's definitely more dramatic than anything YOU'VE ever done!"

Suddenly, a burst of combined crimson and black energy surrounded them. When it cleared, Ha Li was gone - blasted back to the sect by the sheer force of their combined angst.

"That was..." Ma Fen began.

"Amazing? Tragic? Potentially world-ending?"

"Yes," he agreed. Then, in a move that caused Ai Baoni's spiritual energy to do a perfect gymnastics routine, he reached out and took her hand.

Their combined energy swirled around them, creating a vortex of red and black that caused several passing spirit beasts to stop and stare before hurriedly updating their cultivation aesthetic.

"You know this means we're destined to face terrible tribulations and possibly bring about the end, right?" Ai Baoni asked.

"Whatever," Ma Fen replied.

Ai Baoni's heart soared literally as their combined energy had caused them to start floating slightly. Finally, someone who understood her! And he was totally hot in a tragically crimson way!

Her raven, choosing the perfect moment, died one final time for the night and resurrected with all seven heads now sporting tiny red and black streaks in perfect harmony.

"YOU'RE ALL COURTING DEATH!" she shouted at the moon, but this time she said it with love.

To be continued with forbidden romance.
