My name is Flint Ugget. I was born in the Iron Mountains a nameless orphan, I do not know who my parents were or of what caste. Without a family I was displaced; floating doing odd jobs for the Pillars. I found my first passion ale… Pardon me I lost my train of thought. Ale... I learned to brew my own ale. Apparently it was good because I used my home-brewed ale to barter with the Pillars. That is where I received my military training, but without a family name I could not officially join. I do not remember who named me or when I was named. Before I reached adulthood I joined a group of contracted guardsmen for a new mining outpost in the Steps for fifty years.
My job was to safeguard the miners however; during my extended stay I found that most of my co-contracted workers did not maintain their equipment. At first I merely sharpened the guards’ weapons, but eventually I was put in charge of weapon and tool maintenance for the whole camp. There was no forge or smith, but as time went by I started my brewing up once again.
I kept doing my guardian duties, but found that the guard post’s bunk was too far from the mine for me to handle all the camp’s equipment. Using my ale as compensation I pulled on the hard work of the camp to build a pub with an attached smithy. Here I was able to mass produce my ale and find my second passion smithing . It is exhilarating pulling the impurities out of ore making something shine and meet the needs of the community; Ha! I had pointers from the miners but found I had a natural talent in this work. When my fifty years of guarding were up I stayed on as a smith and the pub owner.

Our small mining outpost grew time and time again as more and more ore veins were found. We had trade with the goblins who had plagued many of the dwarf encampments. Some would leave you to believe it was our “outstanding guards” trained by the Pillars that warded off potential threats. But I believe it was deals made in our early establishment to trade protection for some of MY ALE. I learned to speak with the Goblins here in my trading. We have been at peace; trading and working with any race that will deal fairly. Any those who do not wish to be fair are not a problem. We were after all trained by the Pillars. In time I had many apprentices; some training brewing and others in smithing.
I have had dozens of apprentices most of which quit out of frustration because I was never formally trained and they had their pride I suppose. I don’t hold discriminations that most other dwarves have. My favorite and best apprentice Wort a goblin girl who really surpassed my skill in smithing. When she married and was thinking of leaving to set up her smith I gave her a wedding present my small fortune and my smith. She vowed to name her first son after me. I stayed in the pub for some time when the guild offered to take it off my hands for a small agreement to waive my monthly payment of five gold a month to be part of the guild. I gave them my recipe and gave them the pub, but left the smith to Wort.
I started my journey to learn more and give Wort her freedom without my prying eyes. I did jobs for the guild of various needs. I have escorted tradesmen and built houses with my gained knowledge. I even get to work part time at a smithy and pub occasionally. I have traveled far and wide across Cronitex never staying in one place for very long.
