2. Systems, Plural

Darren's arms turned into a noodle. Just lifting it felt like you were trying to make a rope stand up. He was lying down on the head of the lizard. It was a perfect size for him, his head touched the gaping eye, and his feet reached the edge of its nose.

However, the angle does feel weird as he is still using his core strength just to stay still. After a single stretch that risked his fall, Darren stood up and climbed to the top of his head.

Darren went and sat at the end of the face and looked down to the forest, pondering what had just happened. It wasn’t easy, but he did kill the giant lizard he was sitting on.

Experiencing it wasn’t enough, like… it didn’t feel real. He did prepare for something like that… but… it felt so underwhelming; Darren shook his head and thought about something else. "Now... what am I supposed to do?" He spun his knife around his fingers.

Beginning from the sky, a small black circle formed. Then it enlarged itself and turned everything back into the dark void it was before, making him fall off the Lizard. "Oh shit."

Darren's eyes enlarged at the drop, then he just landed without much fall and just stood... from embarrassment, like being scared of a cat jumping out of a bush.

His rope was a few steps to his right and his bag was a few meters away in front of him. "Phew, I never learned how to drop properly on a flat surface, thank God." He raised his arms and wiped his sweat, but after he did, he heard something drop below him.

Darren looked down on his evaporating body; floating in the air. He stared at his rope and bag, panicking at losing his well-prepared items. "I was never told about this! Fuck! Wait!" He yelled.

Everything immediately went from the void to the view of a city surrounded by trees from the left and right. A grass plain with a path went from the far city gate to his feet. Unlike the city, his surroundings had no trees. Darren looked left and right, and then a voice yelled behind him, “Move!”

The crackling sound of wood with the steps of a horse. Before he could even look behind him, beneath his feet were his bag, rope, and knife; hurriedly picked them up and went to the side of the pathed road.

Multiple wooden carriages plastered with a banner of a bag full of coins on the side walked passed Darren. None of them paid any more attention to him and as he looked at the small window above, he could only spot the roof.

He watched the carriages travel as they entered the city. It didn't take a few seconds, but in those minutes that lasted, Darren was completely entranced.

The wind blew his bag to flip and his hair felt like it was being pulled by the wind. As he watched the city gate open for the merchant carts, it truly felt like he was in a different world.

Teleporting into a black void then being changed to a forest, to fighting a giant man lizard... he had prepared for everything... physically and mentally, but Darren's dried face was moisturized by sweat and tears.

"I made it... I really fucking made it." He picked up his knife and rope; shoving them into his bag. He strapped it to his back and walked to the city.

Darren zipped off a tiny pocket to the side of his back and took out a piece of gold, roughly shaped as a coin.

By the gate stood two guards, one at each side. "Show us your I.D." Said a guard while the other stood still looking straight ahead without batting an eye to his right.

"I kind of don't have a card... but I can just pay for it right?" Darren replied, passing the coin to his hand. The man smirked for a second and immediately went back to a poker face.

"Yes, well you can enter." He flicked a lever behind him, opening a smaller door to the side of the city's gate. "Though if you are from a village, make sure to get a card in the registration center or at the adventurers guild." He continued.

"Will do!" Darren walked passed the guard.

As soon as he entered, it was like a totally different world from the outside. Yells were heard from street vendors catching any new customers. "Sir! Sir! Would you like to have some trinkets or souvenirs, some could even give you a wish."

"Sorry." Darren bowed and bowed as he glanced at the old infrastructure in this medieval-based town. He turned back to the huge gate and thought. That's definitely something I'll add to my bucket list.

"I've never seen you here before, are you a country bumpkin? I can sell you any information you want. Of course, it costs a coin." A kid rubbed his finger.

Darren smiled and said, "Well, I would like to know where the adventurer guild is... just that, does that really cost money?"

The kid stayed quiet for a few seconds looking down and rubbing his chin, "Nope, well I can tell you where it is! Just go straight the road and the moment you reach that end building, just turn left and it's already obvious which one it is."

"Thanks, kid." Darren caressed the kid's hair and flipped him a coin to the floor. He then went on the road till he reached the end just like what he was told.

To his left was a rather obvious display of the adventurers guild. A man was thrown out holding a sword and shield. He plummeted down to the floor on his back as another man jumped out of the building with his sword raised and aimed at the one on the floor.

He blocked with a shield, parrying the sword away, and took space. Darren didn't watch any longer but he was intrigued, a fight when there were so many people around?

Going inside the Guild would definitely be an interesting experience as a man commented something to his side. "What type of clothing is that?". It made him look down, Oh wait! I forgot to change my clothes, I was so excited.

Darren looked around him for any alleys to change to, but surprisingly enough, there weren't, nor was there any place without people. He just shoved it off and entered in.

Entering an already open door after everyone had just watched two men fight, having clothes uncommon to this world had made Darren the next major attention. However, he didn't mind it and walked to reception at the end.

Tables just like the ones from the fantasy shop were plastered across the room, only leaving a path to the reception and 2 stairs going to the second floor at the sides.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

"Hey look, I got this new system yesterday."

"What? You already had one! You should have given it to me!"

While Darren walked inside the Guild, many interesting conversations could be heard, but as hints piled up, it was better to just keep it at the back of the shelves and look at it when he was free.

"I would like to register as an adventurer." He said to a female receptionist.

"Okay, the registration fee is three bronze coins." She replied.

"Sorry but I have no bronze coins," Darren replied. But before the receptionist could instigate anything, he continued. "I only have a gold coin."

With her mouth left open before releasing a sound, she stared at the coin and retracted what she was about to say. "Oh... well we have change so don't worry." She took the coin and handled some equipment behind the desk.

"Oh by the way, if you wouldn't mind me asking, do you have a System by any off chance?" The receptionist asked.

System? Remembering what he heard just a few seconds earlier. "No," he answered.

"Okay, then if you ever get the chance to have one, always remember to tell us or you will be charged or even imprisoned for fraud." The receptionist said.

Darren covered his mouth and began to ponder about the systems he was hearing.

The woman brought up an orb placed on a piece of wood and his changes in the forms of bronze and silver plates and coins. "If you could just drop a drop of blood here please." She pushed the orb and took a card; plugging it behind the piece of wood.

"Okay," he raised his finger to his mouth before the receptionist then interrupted. "No sir, here," she pointed at the needle beside the orb. "Oh, sorry, sorry." Darren bowed.

After a drop of blood, the receptionist took out the card and placed it on Darren's hand. It detailed a symbol of a star to the right and had his complete name, race, and even age. Additionally, his adventurer rank was placed in bold and slightly bigger below, stating "F-Rank."

"Do you want some explanation on how the entire guild system works?" The receptionist asked.

"No, no, there is no need. I already know the basics, I'll just ask if I am stuck somewhere." Darren replied and began to walk to the adventurer board crowded by tons of people.

"Well, good luck! Stay safe newbie." The receptionist yelled.

But before he reached the board, he looked down at the odd copper plates and silver plates that he was given. So it’s a much more complicated system huh… I hope I don’t cause inflation.

It was a long wooden board plastered by multiple pieces of paper with different tasks on their own. By simple observation, it seemed like the board was properly organized. There were a lot of people in the middle and occasionally or just none to the edges.

Darren walked to the left side of the board and picked out an F-rank quest.

F-Rank

Classification: Hunting

Gather 10 Rabbit Horns

Reward: 10 Bronze Coins

What a stingy reward, but it does kinda sense huh? He waved the piece of paper and shoved it into his pants. As he observed the many people walking outside as they took a quest, Darren just did the same.

As he walked out of the Guild, still having many looks at him, though surprisingly no annoying people nor mentions of his weird clothing and a weirdly designed backpack.

But just like before, he heard the conversation about Systems again and just took a slight look at a piece of paper pressed under a man's arm.

B-Rank

Classification: Tower

Gather 20 Sys▆▆▆ ▆▆▆▆▆

Rewar▆▆ ▆▆ ▆▆▆▆ ▆▆▆▆▆

Sys... tem, is it? Hmm. Darren walked out of the Guild and turned to the right, bumping into the same kid he talked to earlier. "What are you doing here."

"This gold coin! This is way too much! Please take it back! I can't accept something this expensive!" The kid yelled with his head low and raised the gold coin with both his hands.

"Hahaha! That's why." Darren caressed the kid's hair, walked to his side, and kneeled. "I have enough money, so don't worry about it." He lifted the kid's head and looked at his eyes. "Okay?"

"But! But! But still! A gold coin can last an entire village for a year! I don't think you understand how important this is!"

"Hah... I think you're the one who doesn't understand. I'm giving it to you, so stop being stubborn and just take it, okay." Darren said.

The kid grumbled and pressed his lips as he tightened his grasp on the gold coin. "Okay..."

"Well anyway, this is good timing, where do adventurers go to gather some rabbit horns?" Darren asked.

"Umm, well you just have to straight in that direction and exit the city into the forest, that's where most rabbits gather." The kid pointed behind Darren.

"Thanks, how much is that info for?" Darren smiled and stood up.

"What! No! This gold coin is way too much already!" The kid yelled.

Darren laughed at the kid and just nodded as he turned around. The kid was far smarter than someone that age, whether it was just that kid or the world fostered such intelligent children, whatever it was, Darren did know one thing. I'll deal with the problem that will happen to that kid later.

He pictured the men clearly hiding a few buildings away staring at Darren and the kid as they talked.

Darren walked straight to the left of the Adventurer guild. Reaching the end he turned to the only direction which was the right and saw a much smaller gate than the one he entered from.

Not a lot of people seem to exit the city other than adventurers; which 2 women with a staff, one man with a sword, and another with a giant shield exited the city.

After a few minutes of walking, he took out his knife from the bag and finally reached the outside. He entered the forest where he immediately spotted a rabbit just hanging beside the city walls.

The rabbit was as thick as his feet and reached halfway to his kneecaps. The rabbit also had the horns of a unicorn. If everything that had happened was not enough to prove that he had gone to a fantasy world, that unicorn horn was definitely the cream on top.

Darren ran toward the rabbit. It spotted him and ran into the bushes inside the forest. But unluckily to the rabbit, Darren was not slow in the slightest. He stabbed into the rabbit's small body.

He pulled on the horn like water, "That was easier than I expected.". Darren wiped the blood on his knife on the rabbit's hide and picked it up. "I need to take the corpse right? Or... okay maybe I should've asked for more information."

Darren carried the rabbit by its ear and carried on looking for more. He went to a tree and carved an X on it.

Killing the rabbits was the easiest part of the quest, though finding them was quite in its own league. But after a few minutes of mindlessly walking around the forest just to kill 10 rabbits, he finished with a heavy bag of corpses in his left hand.

"Run!"

"Agh!!"

He heard yells from his left. One was a call for action and the other was a scream of pain. Darren dropped the rabbits to the ground and immediately ran to the noise, dragging his knife to the trees.

One woman lay on the ground while the other was running outside of a cave that was weirdly sticking out of the ground.

But before Darren could even assess what was going on, or even come close to them, the small cave enlarged to the top of the trees and reached far beyond the woman lying down, forming a giant mouth.

It launched down to the ground and slowly retracted to its former position. When it opened back up, the two women were gone.
