Episode 4: “Oh My…”

Previously on Moonlit Mayhem

The Misfits spent the day battling to dismantle the Yellow Brick Road, but their efforts were no match for its relentless magic. By late afternoon, the road had evolved into a smooth, glowing expanse, its symbols pulsing with a deliberate rhythm.

Then came the booming sound—earth-shaking, ominous, and clearly making a point. As the Misfits stood at the road’s edge, the vibrations stopped, leaving behind a silence heavy with expectation.

A restless night followed, with each taking shifts to keep guard. By morning, the road shimmered in the sunlight, unbroken and waiting for its purpose to unfold. Whatever had built it wasn’t done yet.

----------------------------------------

The Misfits stood at the edge of the road, their faces marked with weariness and unease. Despite their best efforts, the night had brought no answers—only more questions.

“We stopped it from growing,” Zoe said quietly, her light magic flickering faintly in her palms. “But it’s still here. And now we have no idea what’s coming next.”

Melody hugged herself, her voice soft but trembling. “If this really is a bridge, then someone—or something—built it to get here. And they’re going to use it.”

As if summoned by her words, a faint sound broke the silence—footsteps, light but deliberate, echoing from the far end of the square. The group turned as one, their eyes narrowing as a figure emerged from the edge of the shimmering road.

She was young, dressed in a pale blue dress that gleamed softly in the morning light. Her brown hair was neatly braided, her wide, doe-like eyes scanning the town with a mixture of wonder and delight. In one hand, she clutched a wicker basket. At her side trotted a small dog, its sharp barks punctuating the stillness.

“Oh my!” the girl exclaimed, her voice sweet but resonant as it carried across the square. “What a strange and lovely place this is!”

The Misfits exchanged uneasy glances.

“Who’s that supposed to be?” Finn muttered, his tail flicking as he crossed his arms.

“I think we’re about to find out,” Zoe replied, stepping forward cautiously.

The girl’s face lit up as she noticed them, her expression warm and open. “Hello there!” she called, her voice lilting and light. “Oh, I’m so glad I found someone! I was beginning to think I’d be lost forever.”

----------------------------------------

Zoe stepped forward, her light magic sparking faintly in her hands as she sized up the stranger. “Who are you?” she asked, her voice calm but firm.

The girl’s face brightened with an innocent smile. “Oh, I’m Dorothy,” she said, clutching her basket tightly. “Dorothy Gale. And this is Toto.” She gestured to the small, scruffy dog at her side, who barked sharply at Zoe before retreating to hide behind Dorothy’s legs.

“I don’t mean to intrude,” Dorothy continued, her voice tinged with a polite nervousness. “But I’ve had the strangest journey. I was walking home—just minding my own business—and then there was this awful wind! It swept me right up, and before I knew it, I was on that road.” She pointed to the Yellow Brick Road behind her, her expression flickering with unease.

“And then the witch came,” she added in a hushed tone, glancing over her shoulder as if expecting to see someone following her.

“The witch?” Raven asked, her shadows coiling at her feet as her sharp eyes scanned the horizon.

Dorothy nodded solemnly. “Yes. A terrible, wicked witch. She’s been chasing me ever since I arrived here. I barely managed to get away.” She knelt down and stroked Toto’s fur, her fingers trembling slightly. “Toto and I have been running ever since. We don’t know where to go.”

Melody’s expression softened as she stepped forward, her voice gentle. “You’re safe now,” she said reassuringly. “If this witch shows up, we’ll take care of her.”

Dorothy looked up at her, her wide eyes brimming with gratitude. “Oh, thank you!” she said, her voice trembling with emotion. “I don’t know what I’d do without kind people like you. Toto and I are so lucky to have found you.”

Finn, standing slightly apart from the group, crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes at Dorothy. “And what exactly are you looking for here?” he asked, his tone skeptical. “Because people don’t just wander onto magical roads by accident.”

“Oh, I’m not looking for anything,” Dorothy said quickly, her innocent tone unwavering. “I just want to go home. But... well, someone told me there’s a magical shard in this town that might help me. It’s small, they said, but very powerful. Do you know anything about it?”

Zoe stiffened, her unease growing as she exchanged a glance with the others. “We might,” she said carefully. “But why would a shard help you get home?”

Dorothy’s expression shifted to one of uncertainty, as if the question hadn’t occurred to her. “I’m not sure,” she admitted. “I think it’s supposed to amplify magical pathways? I don’t really understand magic—I’m just a simple girl from Kansas. But if you think it could help, I’d be so grateful to see it.”

Raven stepped forward, her voice low and wary. “If you’re being chased by a witch, we should focus on keeping you safe, not showing you artifacts.”

“Oh, you’re absolutely right,” Dorothy said quickly, rising to her feet. “I don’t mean to impose. I’d hate to cause any trouble.” She paused, her hand brushing the edge of her basket. “But if the witch does come, I hope I’ll be able to find my way home before it’s too late.”

Her eyes flitted to Zoe’s, and for a moment, something sharp and calculating flickered in their depths—gone as quickly as it came.

----------------------------------------

Dorothy’s arrival rippled through Whispering Pines with the subtle force of a single dropped stone in a still pond. The townsfolk, already accustomed to the strange and supernatural, found themselves inexplicably drawn to her warmth and wide-eyed charm. It wasn’t every day a girl in a neatly pressed blue dress and shiny black shoes wandered into town claiming to be pursued by a witch.

The Misfits, however, weren’t quite as charmed.

“She’s too… perfect,” Finn muttered under his breath as the group trailed behind Dorothy through Main Street. He kept his eyes on her small, deliberate movements—the way she adjusted the basket on her arm just so, or how her glances at shop windows lingered just a moment too long. “Nobody’s that polite. Or that lucky.”

“You’re just paranoid,” Melody replied, though her voice lacked conviction. “She’s been through a lot. You saw how shaken she was.”

“Exactly,” Finn shot back, his ears twitching. “Too shaken to notice the way she’s casing every corner of this place?”

“She’s nervous,” Zoe interrupted, her light magic sparking faintly in her palms. “But that doesn’t mean she’s a threat. Still... Stay alert.”

Ahead of them, Dorothy paused outside Pixel & Fangs, her face lighting up as if she’d discovered a treasure trove. “What’s this?” she asked, turning to the group with a delighted smile.

“It’s an arcade,” Raven said flatly, her shadows curling lazily at her feet.

Dorothy’s smile grew wider as she stepped inside, Toto at her heels. The arcade’s neon lights reflected in her wide eyes as she gazed around the room, her amazement so genuine it seemed almost theatrical. “Oh, my,” she breathed. “This is incredible. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Toto darted forward, barking at the flashing lights of a nearby pinball machine. Dorothy laughed lightly, scooping him up and cradling him in her arms. “He’s so curious,” she said, her tone apologetic. “It’s all so new to us. Do you mind if I look around?”

Zoe hesitated, exchanging a glance with the others. “Sure,” she said cautiously. “Just… don’t touch anything you don’t understand. Some of this stuff is sensitive.”

Dorothy nodded eagerly, her smile never wavering. “Of course! Thank you, really. You’ve all been so kind.”

----------------------------------------

As Dorothy wandered through Pixel & Fangs, her movements appeared light and curious, but her attention was razor-sharp. Her gaze flicked to the locked case near the back of the room, where the Misfits had hidden a few nexus shards for safekeeping. The faint glow of the shards reflected faintly off the glass, almost imperceptible beneath the hum of the arcade’s lights.

“Those are beautiful,” Dorothy said, pausing just long enough to draw attention to the case without seeming overly interested. “What are they?”

“Nothing you need to worry about,” Finn said quickly, stepping slightly in front of the case.

“They’re pieces of the nexus,” Melody explained, her tone softer. “We keep them here because it’s one of the most secure places in town.”

“Oh, that’s so clever!” Dorothy exclaimed, her expression warm with admiration. “You must be so good at keeping everyone safe. What a wonderful team you must be.”

Her words settled over the group like a subtle haze, their tone disarming yet loaded with intent. Zoe shifted uncomfortably, her light magic sparking faintly as she watched Dorothy out of the corner of her eye.

Dorothy continued to explore, peppering the group with questions that seemed harmless but left Zoe uneasy. She asked about the Misfits’ roles, their magic, and how they’d come to protect the nexus shards. With each answer, she nodded thoughtfully, as though filing the information away for later use.

Toto, meanwhile, caused minor chaos, darting between game consoles and knocking over a stack of promotional flyers. Raven’s shadows snaked out to catch the tumbling paper before it hit the ground, her expression tight with irritation.

“Sorry!” Dorothy said quickly, scooping Toto up again. “He’s just so excited. It’s all so new to him.”

Grumps, who had been leaning silently against a wall, finally spoke, his deep voice cutting through the air. “Your dog’s got a lot of energy for someone who’s been running from a witch.”

Dorothy’s smile faltered for the briefest moment, and in that instant, Zoe saw a flicker of something sharp in her eyes—something calculating. But just as quickly, Dorothy recovered, laughing lightly as she held Toto closer.

“Oh, he’s just resilient,” she said sweetly. “He’s been my rock through all of this.” She turned her gaze back to Zoe, her expression soft and earnest. “And you’ve all been so kind. I don’t know what I would’ve done if I hadn’t found you.”

----------------------------------------

The faint glow of the nexus shards reflected in Dorothy’s wide eyes as she glanced over her shoulder at the locked case. Zoe’s unease deepened, but before she could speak, Dorothy clapped her hands together lightly.

“Well, I suppose I should let you get back to your day,” Dorothy said, her tone as cheerful as ever. “Toto and I have taken up enough of your time. Thank you again for your kindness. Truly.”

As she turned to leave, Toto wriggled free, darting toward a cluster of arcade machines. His sudden movement sent a cascade of soda cups tumbling from a nearby counter, creating a momentary commotion. Dorothy rushed to gather him, her laughter bright and apologetic, but Zoe’s focus snapped to the locked case.

The glow of the shards had dimmed—one of them was missing.

----------------------------------------

Zoe froze, her eyes locked on the case that now seemed just slightly… off. She stepped closer, her light magic flaring faintly as she leaned down to examine the glass. The shards, usually arranged in neat rows, now had a conspicuous gap where one had once glowed.

“Where’s the shard?” she said aloud, her voice cutting sharply through the arcade’s background hum.

The others turned, their conversations falling silent as they crowded around the case. Finn crouched beside Zoe, his golden eyes narrowing as he sniffed the air.

“It was here,” he muttered, his tail flicking. “I can smell it, but… it’s faint. Like someone covered their tracks.”

Melody frowned, glancing over her shoulder. “Dorothy was standing here earlier. Do you think she—”

“—stole it?” Raven finished, her shadows flickering in agitation. “Absolutely. That ‘sweet, innocent traveler’ act was just that—an act.”

Grumps growled low in his throat, his form flickering slightly as his dragon magic pulsed. “She’s been playing us since she showed up.”

“But why?” Melody asked, her voice tinged with disbelief. “What would she want with a nexus shard? She said she just wanted to go home.”

“She lied,” Zoe said, standing abruptly. Her light magic burned brighter now, her unease solidifying into anger. “And now she’s gone.”

A loud crash near the entrance drew their attention. The group turned just in time to see Dorothy darting out of Pixel & Fangs, Toto yipping at her heels.

----------------------------------------

“She’s getting away!” Finn shouted, already sprinting after her.

The Misfits burst out of the arcade and onto Main Street, their footsteps pounding against the pavement. Dorothy was fast, her blue dress whipping behind her as she sprinted toward the edge of town. Toto barked wildly, weaving between her feet but never tripping her up.

“She’s heading for the Yellow Brick Road!” Raven called, her shadows curling like tendrils of smoke as she tried to extend them toward the fleeing girl.

Dorothy glanced back over her shoulder, her wide eyes no longer brimming with innocence but alight with cunning. “Oh, you’re all so kind,” she said, her voice ringing with mock sweetness. “But I really must be going!”

Toto stopped abruptly, turning to growl at the approaching Misfits. Before anyone could react, the little dog let out a sharp, high-pitched bark. A wave of golden energy burst outward from his small frame, rippling through the air and forcing the Misfits to halt.

“What the—?” Finn staggered back, shielding his face from the light.

“It’s the shard!” Zoe shouted, her light magic flaring as she tried to counter the wave. “She’s using it to boost her magic!”

Dorothy didn’t stop. She reached the Yellow Brick Road, her basket bouncing on her arm as she turned to face them one last time. Her sweet smile returned, but now it carried a sharp edge.

“Thank you for everything,” she said, her voice saccharine and mocking. “You’ve all been so helpful. But this little treasure is mine now, and Toto and I have somewhere very important to be.”

She held up the shard, its fractured glow pulsing faintly in her hand. The Yellow Brick Road reacted immediately, the golden bricks shimmering and humming as if in response to its power.

Dorothy stepped onto the road, and the light around her intensified. “Do try to keep up,” she called over her shoulder, her laughter ringing out as she disappeared down the golden path.

The Misfits stood at the edge of the road, the fading shimmer of Dorothy’s presence leaving a heavy silence in its wake.

“She has the shard,” Zoe said, her voice quiet… We need to get it back”

----------------------------------------

The Yellow Brick Road stretched out before them, its shimmering surface alive with faint pulses of light that seemed to beckon and taunt at the same time. Dorothy and Toto had long since disappeared, their presence reduced to a lingering hum in the air. The Misfits stood at the road’s edge, their faces a mix of determination and unease.

“We can’t let her get away with that shard,” Zoe said, her voice steady as her light magic flickered faintly in her palms. “It’s not just about the nexus anymore. She’s planning something—something big.”

“And we’re supposed to chase her down an endless road of magic with no idea where it leads?” Finn asked, his tail flicking anxiously. “This feels like a trap.”

“It is a trap,” Esmeralda said, stepping forward with her glowing crystal ball clutched tightly in one hand. Her scarves fluttered in the faint breeze as she gazed down the golden path. “But you don’t have a choice. If she’s already using the shard to amplify her magic, it won’t be long before she finds the others. And if she does…” She trailed off, shaking her head. “Well, let’s just say the world you know will look very different.”

Grumps let out a low growl, crossing his arms as his dragon magic flared faintly around him. “Then we go after her. We stop her before she can use the shard for whatever she’s planning.”

“We can’t all go,” Melody said, her voice soft but resolute. “Someone has to stay behind to watch the nexus and make sure the rest of the shards are protected.”

Zoe nodded, her light magic sparking faintly in her palms. “Agreed. This is going to be a long journey, and we need to be prepared. Let’s figure out who’s coming and who’s staying.”

The Misfits huddled near the edge of the Yellow Brick Road, their voices low but heavy with tension as they debated their next move. The golden expanse stretched before them, pulsing faintly, as if waiting for their decision.

“We’ll need someone who can sense magic and trace her trail,” Zoe said, breaking the silence. Her voice was steady but focused. “I can keep track of the nexus energy she’s using, but navigating whatever traps or obstacles she leaves behind won’t be easy. I’ll need help.”

“I’m in,” Finn said immediately. His golden eyes gleamed with determination, and his tail flicked in anticipation. “My senses are sharper than anyone else’s. If she leaves a trail, I’ll find it. Plus,” he added with a wry grin, “if this witch she’s talking about is real, someone’s gotta sniff her out.”

Raven stood a few paces back, her arms crossed as her shadows coiled protectively around her feet. “I’ll come too,” she said, her voice calm but resolute. “If this road leads to something worse than Dorothy, you’re going to need my magic. Whatever we find out there won’t scare me.”

Melody hesitated, glancing between the group and the glowing road. Her voice was quiet but firm as she said, “I should stay. If more anomalies show up while you’re gone, someone has to be here to keep them from overwhelming the town. And if Dorothy tries to double back, I can warn you.”

Before Zoe could respond, Madame Esmeralda’s voice cut through the tension, her tone firm but reassuring. “Melody,” she said, stepping forward with her glowing crystal ball in hand, “you’re going. The nexus is stable for now, and the ley lines aren’t causing any trouble.” Her gaze flicked to Melody with a faint but meaningful pause. “This—this is where you’re needed most.”

Melody hesitated, the weight of Esmeralda’s words pressing against her uncertainty. “But who will stay to protect the nexus?” she asked, her voice tinged with reluctance.

Esmeralda’s smile softened, though her sharp eyes held a glint of something deeper. “Mayor Price and Myrna can manage just fine. Don’t let appearances fool you—there’s more magic in both of them than they care to admit. And the ley lines are quiet.” Her crystal ball glimmered faintly as she tilted her head, her voice dropping into something almost contemplative. “Besides, there are things on this road you’ll need to face, Melody. Things meant for you.”

Melody blinked, the cryptic words settling uncomfortably in her chest. “What things?”

Esmeralda’s smile returned, this time with a hint of her usual mischief. “Ah, if I told you now, it wouldn’t mean as much later, would it? Trust me—you’ll see soon enough.” She stepped back, her expression turning brisk again. “Now go. Your team’s waiting.”

Esmeralda smirked knowingly. “Don’t you worry about that. Mayor Price might look like he belongs in a council meeting, but she’s got more magic up her sleeve than most people realize. She’ll keep the defense force in line and handle anything minor that crops up.”

“And Cassandra,” Esmeralda added, her gaze shifting toward the town. “That Lady Dragon is far more powerful than she lets on. She’ll be here, and between the two of them—and me—this town will be just fine.”

Zoe nodded, the weight in her chest easing slightly. “If the nexus is in your hands, then we can focus on the road. But we’ll need to be ready for anything.”

Grumps, leaning heavily on a nearby tree, grunted his agreement. His gaze remained fixed on the shimmering road as he spoke. “I’m going,” he said simply. “No way I’m sitting around while you all walk into who-knows-what. Besides, if it’s dangerous, you’ll want me there.”

“Then it’s settled,” Zoe said, her light magic flaring brighter as she stepped toward the road. “We pack what we need, and we move out at first light.”

As the group prepared to go, Esmeralda stepped forward, her crystal ball glowing faintly as she surveyed the group. “You’ll need more than your magic for this journey,” she said. “The Yellow Brick Road is a bridge between worlds. It will test you—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Bring what you need to survive.”

The Misfits dispersed briefly, each gathering supplies from their respective homes. When they gathered again, Esmeralda gave them each a protective charm from her collection. She whispered cryptic words over the trinkets before handing them out. “These won’t stop everything,” she said, “but they might just keep you alive.”

----------------------------------------

By the time the team reconvened at the edge of the road, the sun was dipping low, casting long shadows over the shimmering bricks. The weight of the journey ahead pressed heavily on their shoulders, but none of them wavered.

“This road was built for a reason,” Zoe said, stepping onto the first brick. Her light magic flared softly, mingling with the faint hum of the path beneath her feet. “Whatever’s at the end of it, we’ll face it together.”

Finn followed her, his sharp eyes scanning the horizon. “Let’s just hope it doesn’t take us somewhere worse than here.”

Grumps and Raven stepped onto the road together, their magic coiling faintly in the air around them. Melody stood at the edge, watching as her team disappeared into the distance. “Be careful,” she called after them, her voice carrying a note of quiet worry.

As the Misfits ventured deeper into the Yellow Brick Road, the golden light around them began to shift, the landscape subtly warping with each step. The familiar trees and buildings of Whispering Pines faded, replaced by something far stranger—something that felt like a story come to life.

The road hummed beneath their feet, its golden glow growing brighter as if welcoming them into a world they couldn’t yet understand.

Next Time on Moonlit Mayhem:

While Zoe’s light magic falters, the team must confront their inner struggles, finding strength in unity or risk being consumed by the forest’s wrath.

The road ahead grows darker, and the stakes rise higher—will the Misfits escape the woods unscathed, or will the shadows of Oz claim their first victory?
