(Previously on Moonlit Mayhem…)
"Whispering Pines narrowly avoided catastrophe when Zoe’s light magic restored the memories stolen by shadow forces. But the victory came with a price. Emotional energy tangled in the town’s magical infrastructure has started to stir, and a mysterious artifact has emerged, feeding on the chaos.
As tensions rise and magic spirals out of control, the team must confront their vulnerabilities to contain the artifact’s power—before it pulls Whispering Pines apart at the seams."
Episode 4: Artifact Agenda
The Whispering Pines rummage sale had always been a charming mess. Vendors selling handmade jewelry and dusty antiques filled the town square with cheerful chatter, their mismatched displays turning the cobblestone plaza into a maze of treasures waiting to be discovered.
Today, though, the charm was wearing thin.
“I told you, it’s mine!” a vendor snapped, clutching an ornate golden pocket watch like a lifeline. The object pulsed faintly with an eerie light, the arcane symbols etched into its surface glowing brighter with every passing second. The vendor’s knuckles were bone-white against the watch’s gleaming surface.
Nearby, a teenager froze mid-step, dropping a bag of comics onto the ground. His wide-eyed parents tried shaking him, but he remained stock-still, his lips moving. “I didn’t mean to eat the last cookie, Mom. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to eat the last cookie, Mom…”
“That’s the third loop today,” muttered Mayor Price from her post near the fountain. Her normally impeccable hair was coming loose from its bun, and a frown tugged at her lips as she whispered into her communicator. “This isn’t normal, even by Whispering Pines standards.”
A crackling voice answered on the other end of the line. “Let me guess. Magical artifact causing problems?” Grumps’ gruff tone carried a mix of irritation and something that might almost have been glee. “Shocking. Absolutely shocking.”
“I’m sending the team,” the mayor snapped. “And Grumps? Try not to set anything on fire until they get here.”
When the team arrived, the square was in disarray. Vendors ducked behind tables as objects floated above the cobblestones, spinning lazily through the air. A box of haunted paperbacks had taken flight, flapping their covers like oversized bats.
“Do we ever just get a normal Saturday?” Finn asked, ducking under a low-hanging chandelier that had no business being outdoors.
“Not while we’re breathing,” Raven replied, her shadows flickering at her heels like restless dogs.
Zoe strode to the center of the square, her light magic sparking faintly at her fingertips. “Lucian, Raven—check the artifact. Finn, Melody—help the townsfolk before someone combusts. Grumps, see if you can—”
“Break something?” Grumps offered, claws already twitching.
“Help stabilize things,” Zoe corrected, her glare sharp enough to cut glass.
Grumps sighed dramatically. “Fine. But if it starts glowing red, I’m torching it.”
As Lucian and Raven approached the vendor clutching the pocket watch, Zoe felt a strange pull toward the artifact, like a string tied to her ribs. It pulsed faintly, each glow sending a shiver through her chest.
“This thing is old,” Lucian murmured, his fingers brushing the etched symbols. “Old and volatile.”
“Not just volatile,” Raven said, tilting her head as her shadows coiled uneasily. “It’s hungry. Feeding on something.”
Her shadows recoiled from the artifact, a reaction she felt in her own blood. Being half-demon meant she understood hunger - especially the kind that lived in shadows. This was familiar, too familiar, like looking into a dark mirror of her own power.
“Emotions,” Zoe said, her voice tight. “The shadow attack tangled the town’s infrastructure, and now this thing is amplifying the energy left behind.”
Lucian’s jaw tightened. “Then it’s not here by accident.”
“No,” Zoe agreed, her throat dry. “This is Dark Zoe.”
If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
Before Lucian could reply, a commotion broke out near the fountain.
Finn and Melody were crouched near a group of townsfolk, trying to calm a woman sitting on the edge of the fountain. She was laughing so hard she could barely breathe, tears streaming down her face.
“It’s not funny!” she wheezed between fits. “It’s—hahaha—it’s really not funny!”
Melody crouched beside her, her voice soft and soothing. “Okay, deep breaths. Focus on—”
Her words cut off abruptly as a ripple of magic coursed through the square. But it wasn't just the artifact's magic she felt - for a split second, she heard distant music, ancient and familiar, that made her blood run cold. She pushed the sound away, focusing on the crisis at hand. The artifact pulsed again, and the laughter spread like wildfire. Melody clapped a hand over her mouth, stifling giggles, but within seconds she was doubled over, laughing uncontrollably.
“Fantastic,” Finn muttered, glaring at the artifact. “The cursed pocket watch thinks it’s a comedian.”
Melody managed to gasp out, “Finn... do something!”
He crouched beside the woman, his voice steady despite the chaos. “Hey. Look at me.” He placed a hand on her shoulder, his grip firm but not harsh. “You’re fine. This isn’t real. Just breathe, okay?”
Her eyes met his, and after a long moment, the laughter subsided. Melody gave him a wobbly thumbs-up as she caught her breath. “Nice work, Wolf Guy. Ever consider running a yoga retreat?”
Finn snorted, but his knuckles were white where they gripped his knees.
Back at the artifact, Zoe stretched a hand toward the pocket watch, its pull growing stronger with every second.
“Careful, Lightbulb,” Grumps muttered from behind her, his claws flexing. “That thing looks like it wants to bite.”
“I’ve got this,” Zoe said, though her voice wavered slightly. The artifact’s light brightened, and she felt a sharp tug deep in her chest, as though it was trying to unspool her from the inside out.
Lucian’s hand shot out, gripping her wrist and pulling her back sharply. “Enough,” he said, his voice low and firm. “You don’t know what it could do to you.”
Zoe rounded on him, yanking her arm free. “I’m not a child, Lucian. I can handle it.”
“You don’t have to handle everything alone,” he shot back, his tone measured but heavy with meaning.
The air between them crackled with unspoken tension until Raven cut in, her voice sharp. “Hate to interrupt, but we’ve got a bigger problem.”
The artifact pulsed again, sending another ripple of magic through the square. The clock tower bell began ringing in reverse, its discordant sound making the air shimmer.
“Time’s literally running backward,” Raven said dryly. “Not ominous at all.”
Over at Pixel & Fangs, the team studied the artifact, now encased in a glowing barrier. Lucian sat at a table covered in hastily scrawled notes, his brow furrowed as he traced the artifact’s arcane symbols.
“This isn’t just an artifact,” he said finally. “There’s shadow magic embedded in it. It’s tied to the ley lines.”
Zoe paced nearby, her light magic flickering at her fingertips. “So it’s not just feeding on the town’s energy—it’s using the ley lines as a power source.”
Raven frowned, her shadows curling protectively around her feet. “This isn’t random. It’s a tool.”
“A tool for what?” Finn asked, crossing his arms.
“To find cracks,” Raven said simply. “And exploit them.”
Grumps snorted from the corner. “Cracks? Kid, we’re practically an earthquake waiting to happen.”
Zoe turned sharply,“We’re not cracking. We’re fixing this—together.”
When they returned to the square, the artifact’s energy had created a storm-like vortex above the fountain, pulling emotional energy from everyone nearby. Townsfolk screamed as shadowy projections of their fears and doubts swirled around them.
Melody felt the vortex pulling at something deeper than just emotions - it tugged at an older magic in her blood, making her voice waver as she tried to help. The sound that escaped her throat wasn't entirely human, though only she seemed to notice.
Dark Zoe’s voice echoed from the shadows. “Cracks are so much easier to exploit when the foundation is already weak. Keep fighting each other—it saves me the trouble.”
Raven's shadows writhed uncomfortably, recognizing their kin. Dark Zoe's shadow magic called to the demon part of her, an invitation to embrace the darkness she'd spent years learning to control. She gritted her teeth, forcing her powers to obey her will rather than their nature.
The artifact pulsed, and Finn snapped. “Not all of us have had centuries to figure this out,” he growled at Lucian.
Lucian’s eyes narrowed. “Centuries don’t make you perfect, Finn. They just give you more time to screw up.”
“Enough!” Zoe’s voice rang out, her light magic flaring. “We’re stopping this—now.”
Drawing strength from the team’s renewed bonds, Zoe poured her light magic into the artifact, severing its connection to the ley lines. The vortex collapsed, and Dark Zoe’s voice hissed one last time before fading. “This isn’t over.”
Back at Pixel & Fangs, the team slumped around a table strewn with fries and magical debris.
“Sorry for snapping,” Finn muttered to Lucian.
Lucian waved him off. “You weren’t wrong.”
Grumps snorted. “Touching. Can we focus on how I saved the day?”
Melody grinned. “Sure thing, Scaly Hero. Next time, we’ll get you a medal.”
Zoe smiled faintly, her thoughts lingering on the artifact’s faint, pulsing glow. Whatever came next, they’d face it together.
Just another day in the small “calm and peaceful” town of Whispering Pines.
