Barth

Morning arrives after a peaceful sleep, and Kate wakes up alone in bed. She moves around and slowly opens her eyes, looking beside her to see Merig gone. Kate swaddles herself in the blanket, a soft smile playing on her lips as she reminisces about the night they shared. A sound from downstairs breaks the silence, prompting Kate to sit up slowly. She throws off the blanket and gets out of bed, heading towards the bathroom. After relieving herself, she exits and makes her way downstairs to investigate the noise. Kate walks into the kitchen to find Merig cooking breakfast and making tea. A soft smile spreads across her face as she approaches him quietly. Merig stands by the stove as Kate walks up from behind and wraps her arms tightly around him. He feels her embrace, stops cooking, smiles back, and greets her.

(M)Good morning, sweetheart.

(K)Good morning, my love.

(M)How’d you sleep?

(K)Like a log, how about you?

(M)Same, it was the best sleep I’ve had in a while.

(K)Yeah, me too.

Merig pauses his cooking, turning around just as Kate releases her hold. He meets her gaze, their eyes locked in a silent exchange. A soft smile blossoms on both their faces. Merig reaches out, his hands cupping Kate's cheeks. He gently strokes them before leaning down to plant a sweet good morning kiss on her lips.

(K)I’m sure you’ll be leaving soon to go on patrol.

(M)Yeah, but I’m in no rush. Besides, I thought I’d cook breakfast for you this time.

(K)[smiles] I’m in no rush either. Although when you leave, I want to go hang out with Ash at the pub again, if that’s okay.

(M)Of course, Larry and I will walk you there before we go on patrol.

(K)Okay, my love, I am hungry, so we should eat first.

(M)I agree, and like I said, I’m in no rush. We can take our time and eat, too, so I can take my time kissing you.

(K)[smiles] I’d love that very much. In that case, let’s take all the time in the world.

Merig and Kate steal lingering kisses in between finishing up breakfast. Bellies full, they head out the door, Merig securing it with a final click of the lock. Merig strides off down the street, Kate following close behind as they weave through the bustling streets, turning corners with practiced ease. Deep in conversation, Kate catches a glimpse of movement out of the corner of her eye. She throws on the brakes, pivoting to get a better look. It's Barth! He's peeking out from behind a house, looking worse for wear. He throws Kate a desperate wave, beckoning her closer. Her eyes dart around, checking for anyone watching, before she slips away from Merig's side and hurries towards Barth, her voice dropping to a hushed whisper as she gets near.

(K)Meet me in the alley at the Bright and Sherry pub this afternoon. We’ll talk there.

(B)Alright, I’ll be there.

Kate spins on her heel and hurries away from Barth, her steps quickening as she rejoins the path she and Merig were on. She catches up to Merig. Her anxiety is evident as she clutches his arm tightly. They continue their walk towards the pub at a more hurried pace. Inside, Kate and Merig meet Larry. After a brief exchange, Merig and Larry head off together, presumably for patrol duty. Kate, left alone, settles into their usual table at the pub. Across from her sits Ashley, and the two women immediately fall into conversation.

(A)So how are you feeling after what happened last night with Jeff?

(K)Still a little shaken up. It did bring back some…memories. But Merig made it all better, see?

(A)The cut on your lip, it’s gone!

(K)Yep, Merig had some healing powder? He had it stashed in his medicine cupboard.

(A)Really? That stuff is really handy for small wounds.

(K)Yeah it is, I couldn’t believe my eyes. But…that’s not the only way he made it all better.

(A)Oh? Did you two end up cuddling?

(K)Sort of…but we were…naked.

Kate steals a glance at Ashley and beams a shy smile. A blush creeps up her neck, turning her cheeks rosy as she avoids Ashley's gaze for a fleeting moment. Ashley furrows her brow in confusion, momentarily at a loss. Gears begin to turn in her head as she pieces things together. Suddenly, realization dawns on her face. Her jaw drops in shock, eyes widening like saucers.

(A)[gasp] No, you didn’t. Holy shit, Kate, are you serious?! You two did the deed?!

(K)That's right, we made love.

(A)Oh my god, Kate, what happened? I need to know everything…well not everything, but you know what I mean. What made it happen?

(K)It was after he used the healing powder on my lip. Before he remembered he had it, we got carried away talking and then he tried kissing me. But my lip was in pain, so his lips touching mine made it hurt. He felt bad and then he opened his medicine cupboard and found the powder. He used it on my lip and when the cut vanished, he was able to kiss me again, so he did. Then out of nowhere, he asked me if he could make love to me, and of course, I didn’t hesitate to say yes. Before I knew it, we were undressing each other in the dark and eventually, we were naked. Next thing I knew, I laid down on the bed and he was on top of me, touching me and looking deep into my eyes, then…it happened.

(A)Oh my god, Kate, I’m speechless at this point. But, here’s the million gold question...how was it?

(K)[smiles] It was wonderful, Ash, absolutely phenomenal. He was so gentle and sweet and my heart was melting in his hands. I completely lost myself in the moment, as if time had stopped again and he was the only person that mattered at that moment in time. I didn’t want it to end, and I was on cloud nine, Ash. I could talk about it all day if I wanted to.

(A)Oh my god, how romantic. That’s wonderful, Kate. I’m so glad your experience was a pleasant one. And hey, I’m your best friend, so you can always pour your heart out to me about it. I’m just so happy for you. You two are truly meant for each other. You belong together.

(K)Thanks, Ash, it was everything I imagined it would be. And you’re right, I love him and I willingly and happily gave myself to him, so I belong to him. Also…he’s quite…gifted if you know what I mean.

(A)Oh really? Oh, my…I'm sure that was enjoyable for you.

(K)[giggles] Yeah, he was actually worried that he hurt me. I mean, it kind of did hurt at first, but as things progressed, it wasn’t so bad. I assured him that it was fine.

(A)Hey, he’s a true gentleman, hurting you is the last thing on his mind, especially during an intimate moment like that.

(K)He really is a gentleman. We talked some more afterward. He talked so sweetly to me, that I could’ve melted right there in his arms. He truly has swooned me and completely swept me right off my feet, Ash.

(A)Oh, you’re going to make me cry, Kate, that’s so sweet, my heart is melting for you.

(K)He was also worried that I hated him after seeing how he reacted to me getting hit by Jeff last night. I told him I was a bit scared, but I didn’t want to admit it. I told him I wasn’t capable of hating him and I also admitted that I was a little worried that he would…hurt me in his fit of rage. We cleared the air about that and he was happy that I still love him. He apologized profusely, and we had a long talk after we made love. I fell asleep in his arms and he held me all night.

(A)Well, I’m glad you two talked about it, honey. I can tell you right now that Merig wouldn’t dream of hurting you, Kate. That would never and has never crossed his mind. He’d be so heartbroken if you hated him, but I know you’re not capable of hating anyone, Kate, especially Merig. You’re the sweetest and most loving person I know. There’s enough room in your heart for everyone, but Merig takes up most of it, of course.

(K)[smiles] Of course, he does, my heart belongs to him, he stole it fair and square.

(A)That’s true, and he wears it like a badge of honor, too, right next to his Commander rank.

(K)[giggles] It seems like it, but I love him and I’m proud to be with him, too. I told him that I wanted the whole world to know.

(A)I know you love him, Kate. Merig thinks the world of you. I’m just so happy for you two. You’re finally together after all this time. I can see you two are so in love, and you look so happy together. It really warms my heart.

(K)I couldn’t be happier, Ash.

(A)I can imagine. Well hey, I have to go to the bathroom. I’ll be right back.

(K)Okay, I’ll be here.

Ashley's surprised reaction hangs in the air for a moment. Then, abruptly, she stands and excuses herself. As she heads towards the restroom, the pub door swings open. Barth limps in, his familiar gray cloak and blue mask offering a little disguise for his pained expression. He leans heavily on his side, grunting with each labored step. Kate swivels in her seat at the sound of the door, their eyes meeting across the room. Barth offers a curt nod of acknowledgment, which Kate returns. Without lingering, Barth turns and exits the pub just as quickly as he enters. Ashley reappears from the restroom, oblivious to the exchange, and slides back into her seat across from Kate.

(A)Alright, I’m back.

(K)Welcome back. Oh, I need to step outside for a bit, if that’s okay.

(A)Okay, do you need me to come with you?

(K)No, I’ll be okay. The guards are outside and I won’t be long.

(A)Okay, just be careful out there, hon.

(K)I will. Don’t worry, Ash, I'll be right back.

The shock of seeing Barth lingers on Kate's face. Unable to continue the conversation with Ashley, she abruptly pushes herself out of the chair. Her urgency is clear as she strides towards the pub's exit. Outside, a glint of steel catches her eye. The guards stationed by the door. Without breaking stride, she darts left, slipping behind them unnoticed. Another sharp turn takes her down a narrow alley bordering the pub. There, at the far end, hunched against the wall and wracked with pain, stands Barth. His ragged breaths and pained grunts are a stark contrast to the bustling sounds of the pub mere feet away.

(K)Hi Barth, are you okay? You look like you're hurt.

(B)Hey Kate, I'm fine, don't worry about me.

(K)So what did you want to talk about?

(B)I know you may have a lot of questions and I'm here to answer them since I might not be here after we meet.

(K)What? Why?

(B)I came here to warn you about something. Have you heard the name, Cormac?

(K)Yeah, Merig and Larry mentioned him not too long ago. Who is he?

(B)I figured they would. He’s the bandit boss, a goblin as well. He’s not exactly happy with the fact that I left his camp and that I’m stopping the bandits from coming into the city. He’s threatened to confine me back at the camp and some of his cronies beat me up really bad after the banquet last night.

Kate's initial reaction to Barth is one of suspicion. A scowl creases her brow as she gives him a skeptical look. But the sight of his injury, the pained grunts, and the way he leans heavily against the wall snags at her inherent kindness. Her heart, ever the weak spot, can't ignore his plight. The scowl melts, replaced by a look of genuine concern. Her eyes soften, and she reaches out a hand, hesitantly at first, then with a determined resolve to offer aid.

(K)What can I do?

(B)Not much of anything. I’m just hiding here in the city for now.

(K)But won’t the bandits eventually find you?

(B)Probably, if I'm out there in the forest, but I'm fine since I'm hiding here. If I go out there, I can use my magic to fight them off. But if they end up bringing a large group, then I won’t be able to fight everyone.

(K)Which reminds me, were you the one that was at the north entrance not too long ago? You used your lightning magic on that bandit outside.

(B)Yeah, that was me. That bandit was from Cormac's camp. He, along with some other bandits, were waiting to grab you and take you back to Cormac.

(K)I knew it, they sent me a fake letter from Merig. Thank you for fighting them off for me.

(B)Of course, Merig and the guards aren't the only ones trying to keep you safe.

(K)And that lightning spell you used? What was that?

(B)A very powerful thunder spell.

(K)That was an amazing spell. I use magic, but I can only use the basics, so it’s new to me.

(B)What a coincidence, I’m a master mage.

(K)Are you serious? I wouldn’t quite call myself a mage yet. I can barely fuse bolt spells.

(B)That’s okay, you’re still a mage even if you use the basics.

(K)My dad taught me what he could, but I want to learn more.

(B)Tell you what, I’ll teach you more spells if I’m still around.

(K)Really?…I still don’t fully trust you, yet. So why are you telling me all of this?

(B)Because, I came to warn you that if anything happens to me, and you don’t see me around the city, stay inside and don’t go anywhere, the bandits are after you. Remember when I told you at the banquet, that if anything happened to me, that we’d meet again?

(K)Yeah, why?

(B)Because, if you’re not careful, they’ll kidnap you and take you back to the camp. Don’t leave the house, and if you do leave, don’t leave Merig’s side, or the pub.

(K)So how exactly do you know Merig? I know he used to be a bandit, he and Larry told me. But are you in the same group as he was?

(B)I was, but like I said, I’m not a part of the camp anymore. To answer your question, Merig and I grew up together.

(K)I see, I noticed you have the same skin tone as Merig, and you look pretty similar to him.

(B)[chuckles] Yeah, I had a feeling you’d point that out, so I think it’s time I showed my face.

Barth pushes himself away from the wall and strides towards Kate. He reaches her, his gaze fixed on her as he starts to remove his hood and mask, revealing his face. Kate stares at Barth, a look of dawning recognition flashing across her features. Her eyes widen and her jaw drops in shock at his resemblance to Merig. Then she notices the cuts and bruises on his face, evidence of a recent attack.

(K)Wow, they really did beat you up pretty badly. We can go now and I can take you to the healer.

(B)Never mind that, I’ll be fine. I’m sure you can guess why Merig and I have the same skin color and look similar.

(K)Are you related to Merig?

(B)Correct, he’s my younger brother. It's a long story.

(K)You’re his brother? But he and Larry never mentioned you. Merig never mentioned he had a sibling, either.

(B)There’s probably a reason for that. Ten years ago at the camp, Merig and I told Larry, Cormac and even Gordo that humans and Fomors lived in peace in Tara. We said that we would live comfortably if we became Royal Guards and live in peace with humans. But when Cormac became the leader, he decided being a bandit boss was better than coming here. He let the title go to his head as well as his hatred for humans. Some human betrayed Cormac a long time ago before he joined the bandits.

(K)Yeah, Larry and Merig told me that he didn’t used to be a terrible person, but they only mentioned Cormac. Why wouldn’t they mention you?

(B)I'm not really sure, maybe they’re both upset that I chose to stay behind. Cormac put it in everyone's heads that humans weren’t to be trusted and that humans hated us because we’re Fomors as well as bandits. Merig and I told the bandits that humans and Fomors lived in peace, but Cormac didn’t care and he threatened me if I left and even threatened Gordo. He threatened Merig and Larry as well, but he said if I left, he’d make it worse for them. So I had no choice but to stay at the camp, otherwise, I’d risk the safety of my brother. But it seems Cormac kept his promise when I left and he wants revenge. He's ruthless, but he didn't used to be.

(K)I see. That explains why you didn’t want them to know that I met you.

(B)Exactly, I’ve been watching you both and I’ve been keeping an eye on Merig’s place while he’s not there and you’re there alone. But I’ve also seen you two together, and you both seem to really love each other. I’m curious, what made you fall in love with Merig, a Fomor?

(K)[smiles] I had a feeling you’d ask that, and the answer is simple. He doesn’t have to be human for me to love him. Merig has shown me so much kindness and love and he’s also very charming, we even made love together last night and it was amazing and he's so gentle. He also keeps me warm at night, talks sweetly to me, makes me feel loved and safe, and softly touches and kisses me…There are so many more reasons why I fell madly in love with him, but I’d be here all day explaining each one of them, but I don’t think you have that much time with the way you’re talking.

(B)[chuckles] That’s true, but I understand. I can see why Merig loves you. You’re a wonderful person. Also, not a lot of humans are too keen on mating with Fomors, but to me, it’s not unheard of since our mother was a human, but that’s a story for another time. I’m just surprised you made that decision willingly since most human females would scoff at the mere thought of mating with a goblin, at least from my experience of trying to fall in love. But you’re different. You were okay with falling in love with a goblin.

Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

(K)Well, as you can tell, I’m not like most humans, Barth. I came here wanting to start a new life, and I did just that and I fell in love in the process. It just so happens that I fell in love with a goblin and I wasn’t expecting it either, to be completely honest. Merig was convinced that I wanted nothing to do with him romantically, but I proved him wrong. I told Merig that it wasn’t completely out of the realm of possibilities and I was a hundred percent okay with that. I’m okay with the fact that I was charmed by a goblin. Is that so wrong?

(B)No, of course not, but I can tell you that you’re in good hands. Just like myself, Merig has always been a caring person and very protective when it comes to the people he cares about and loves. I actually saw what happened here at the pub last night, and I fear that if the bandits do end up capturing you, Merig will show that side of him again. Only it will be tenfold since you’re someone that he has chosen to love and mate with, so it won’t be pretty. There’s no telling what he would do to Cormac and the other bandits. Merig will stop at nothing to protect you and rescue you if they kidnap you.

(K)Well, let’s just hope that doesn’t happen. I’ll be more cautious. But what about you? I feel I should help you avoid getting caught and confined to the bandit camp, and I want to help you dress your wounds.

(B)Don’t worry about me, the bandits won’t do much to me, they’ll just prevent me from leaving. But I appreciate the thought. Just don’t leave Merig’s side for any reason, okay?

(K)Okay, I won’t. Just hide here for as long as you can.

(B)I will, but you should go, your friend might worry.

(K)Do you need me to get you anything? Have you eaten?

(B)[chuckles] You concern yourself too much. I’m fine, really.

(K)I guess it's because I care too much. Now that I know you’re Merig’s brother, I feel more inclined to trust you.

(B)Our mother was human, Merig and I were raised by humans and we’ve been around humans a lot and you're just as kind as the ones we’ve known, if not more caring. You’re just like them. You care about everyone, even Fomors.

(K)Merig mentioned that to me when he first told me that he used to be in the bandit camp. I care about everyone, that’s how I was raised and a lot of humans are becoming more accepting of Fomors and want to live in peace with them since I grew up around them. I’ll go to great lengths to defend a peaceful Fomor’s right to peace, especially Merig. Some humans may even disagree that I’m with him or the fact that I made love with him. But I never asked for their approval and I freely and happily gave myself to Merig and I regret nothing, not a damn thing.

(B)You were raised right and Merig is lucky to have met you and it seems fate has been kind to you. You must be an altruistic person, to have been given a life such as this one.

(K)I don’t know about fate being kind to me, but I do help people however I can, so you’re right about that part. And no, I’m the lucky one to have met someone as wonderful as Merig. I love him and he’s everything to me.

(B)I understand now. But you should go, stay safe, Kate. We’ll meet again soon.

(K)You stay safe, too Barth, I’ll bring you something to eat and something for your wounds.

(B)[chuckles] Thank you, just don’t burden yourself too much.

(K)It’s no burden at all, really.

(B)Goodbye for now, Kate.

(K)Goodbye, Barth.

Kate and Barth exchange a curt nod, a brief smile passing between them. Kate pivots on her heel and strides away, disappearing into the depths of the alley. She rounds the corner, melting back into the shadows behind the guards, and slips unnoticed into the pub. Ashley, oblivious, remains at the table. As Kate slides back into her seat, Ashley looks up and throws her a greeting.

(A)Hey, you’re back, is everything okay?

(K)Yeah, I just needed some air, that's all.

(A)I wonder how the goblins are doing.

(K)Me too. I hope they’re safe out there on patrol.

(A)I’m sure they’re just fine, those two know what they’re doing.

Outside of the walls, Larry and Merig continue their patrol through the forest, riding along the perimeter in the forest. Merig seems lost in thought, a wide grin plastered on his face. Larry, busy checking Ashley's traps for signs of activation and disposing of them as needed, finishes his round and heads toward Merig. He can't help but notice Merig's daydreamy smile.

(L)Alright, Commander Flynn, the traps are all in place. I checked all of them.

(M)Good, now we can just relax here for a bit if we want.

(L)Sounds good, you look pretty happy today. I take it everything is okay with you and Kate. I know last night was crazy at the pub, and I was worried after what happened.

(M)Yeah, we’re fine, thankfully. We talked and cleared some things up and thankfully she doesn’t hate me like I was afraid of.

(L)Well, that’s a relief. She seemed happy, but I’m sure she was shaken up by what happened.

(M)That’s what she told me, but she did admit she was afraid of me for reacting the way that I did when Jeff hit her.

(L)I can understand your anger toward Jeff, but I also don’t blame her for being scared. You can be terrifying when you’re angry, Merig. I’ve seen it more than once.

(M)[sigh] I know, and I feel like a piece of shit. Kate also admitted that she thought I was going to hurt her because of how angry I was. Even in that state, that never crossed my mind, Larry, I swear.

(L)I believe you since you only had intentions of beating the shit out of Jeff. If you intended on hurting others, I would’ve been hurt in your blind rage, too. But you knew it was me, so you weren’t too far gone to the point of your judgment being clouded.

(M)Exactly, I told her I would die rather than lay a hand on her in that manner. She understood, though, and after a long talk, I took care of the cut on her lip, so it’s gone now. I had some healing powder stashed away from my early training days that Nessa gave me. She gave it to me for my smaller wounds, so I didn’t have to keep visiting her as much.

(L)Oh yeah, I remember you used that a lot, and you even let me use it if I needed it. That stuff is amazing.

(M)It is, and it came in handy. I used it on Kate’s lip and the cut vanished.

(L)That’s good. I’m glad you two talked about everything. I was worried something bad would happen between you both and you wouldn’t be together anymore.

(M)Trust me, that was my biggest fear. But some things ended up happening and, well, let’s just say something good came out of it all.

(L)What do you mean? What happened?

(M)[smiles] We made love.

(L)You what?! You and Kate did the nasty?!

(M)Ssssshhhh keep it down, don’t announce it to the entire forest.

(L)Merig, are you messing with me, right now?

(M)No, of course not, Larry, I’m telling you the truth.

(L)Well, how the hell did that happen?

(M)Well, my dumbass wasn’t thinking, and we got lost in our deep conversation. Then I tried kissing her while the cut was still on her lip, so it hurt her. I felt really bad, then I remembered that I had the healing powder in my stash of medicine and I used it on Kate’s lip. Then we were able to kiss, so we did for a little bit…and then a question just escaped from my filthy goblin mouth. I asked her if I could make love to her.

(L)Seriously? Wow, you didn’t even sugar-coat it, did you?

(M)No, it just came out of nowhere, Larry. I looked into her eyes while we were talking and something came over me. The question just didn’t filter through my brain and I thought I was just thinking about it in my head, but I realized I had actually asked out loud. But to my surprise, she immediately said yes. I panicked and asked her if she was ready, but she assured me that she was as long as it was with me. We started kissing some more and then we just started undressing each other. The next thing I knew, we were standing in front of each other and I was looking down at her beautiful naked body. Then, we were both on the bed and I made love to the woman of my dreams.

(L)Holy shit, Merig, first, you find the balls to tell her that you’re in love with her. Come to find out, she feels the same. Then you ask her out on a date, and she agrees, and you both have a good time. You didn’t hesitate to ask her to be in a relationship with you, and now you’re together. And now you decided you wanted to take things to the next level and make sweet love to her last night. So you asked her to participate and she was more than happy to agree to do that with you. Am I getting the story straight?

(M)Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

(L)See what happens when you listen to your old friend? Good things happen and I’m proud of you, pal. I’m really impressed that you found the confidence to finally build the relationship you’ve been wanting with Kate for a year now.

(M)Hey, a year is a long time, and it was the very moment I met her that I fell in love with her. The first time I saw her beautiful face, I thought I was dreaming. It was a feeling I didn’t understand and I just couldn’t shake it off. When I didn’t understand my feelings, you told me exactly what it was, and it all made sense. Her beautiful brown eyes that pierce right through me, and look deep into the abyss that is my Fomorian soul. Her blinding smile that can light up the night sky, and her warm touch that could last all through winter. And a heart that makes people question their own choices in life. There’s so much more about her, but I’d be here all day.

(L)Yeah, I understand what you mean. There are so many things about Ash that just make me weak at the knees. That fire-red hair that I that can run my fingers through all day if I wanted to. Those icy blue eyes that hypnotize me. Her pale skin that feels like pure silk. And her kisses make my whole body go numb. I love that woman with every fiber of my being and I’d be lost without her.

(M)Yeah, I’d be lost without Kate. I was sure she was going to leave me after last night. But alas, I guess I’m not the screw-up I thought I was. She still loves me and that’s all I care about. We shared an intimate moment together and I’m happier than I’ve ever been. I guess I have you to thank for pushing me to have courage.

(L)I’m happy for you, Merig, and hey, that’s what friends are for. I’m just glad you and Kate are together and happy.

(M)Thanks, buddy, I’m happy for you and Ash, too. You two seem happy together.

(L)We are very happy. Life is good for us lucky goblins, isn’t it, Merig?

(M)It sure is, Larry, it sure is.

The two goblins wrap up their patrol and head back to the pub, ready to unwind for the rest of the day. Kate, keeping Barth's presence a secret, discreetly tends to his wounds and offers him food to aid his recovery. Meanwhile, at Merig's home, bedtime approaches. Merig, already in his sleepwear, sits engrossed in a book while Kate finishes changing into something comfortable. Stepping out of the bathroom in a long, comfy blue nightdress, she flips off the light. Merig, lost in his reading, catches a glimpse of Kate out of the corner of his eye. He looks up, a smile spreading across his face as he meets her gaze.

(M)Hey, beautiful.

(K)[smiles] Hey, handsome.

(M)Care to join me in this bed to wind down?

(K)Only if it involves you holding me all night again.

(M)[smiles] That can be arranged.

Kate returns Merig's smile and walks towards the bed, circling around to her side. She lifts the covers and slides in, settling herself comfortably. Merig, sensing her approach, sets aside his reading material and reaches over to turn off the bedside lamp. He then lays down himself, leaving his arms open in a welcoming gesture. Kate scoots closer, snuggling her head against his arm as she always does. Merig adjusts the blanket, enveloping them both in its warmth. He pulls her in further, his embrace tightening. Their eyes meet, and a silent conversation passes between them. A smile graces both their faces before Merig leans down, his kiss soft and tender.

(K)So, how was your day today, my love?

(M)It was surprisingly quiet in the forest today. Larry and I talked most of the time. What about you? How was your day?

(K)Pretty much the same, quiet and uneventful. I spent time with Ash and we talked, too. I'm sure you probably told Larry about last night.

(M)[smiles] Guilty, but hey, I have bragging rights. I had the most amazing night of my life with the most beautiful woman. Is it so wrong that I want to tell the world?

(K)[giggles] Of course not, I have bragging rights, too. I told Ashley that I had a phenomenal night with the most wonderful goblin, so we're even.

(M)I guess so. I think I'm the luckiest goblin in all of Erinn.

(K)I still think I'm the lucky one, but I think we're both lucky to be here together.

(M)I can't argue with that.

(K)I love you, Merig.

(M)I love you, too, Kate.

Lost in their embrace, Kate and Merig hold each other tight, sharing another lingering kiss before their eyelids begin to flutter. Sleep eventually claims them, and their peaceful breaths fill the room. Meanwhile, a different scene unfolds at Larry's home. Here too, bedtime rituals are underway. Larry, clad in his nightclothes, turns to find Ashley. Dressed for sleep, she stands before the full-length mirror, brushing out her hair. He strides towards her, a smile playing on his lips. Wrapping his arms around her from behind, he leans down and plants a gentle kiss on her cheek.

(A)Hey, you.

(L)Hello, gorgeous.

(A)How was the patrol? I decided to use a different placement strategy for my mines and traps. I was hoping we'd have more success catching bandits that way.

(L)Beautiful and smart.

Ashley, caught by surprise by Larry's embrace, turns her head to meet his gaze. A smile blossoms on her face, mirroring the one on Larry's. He leans down further, his kiss this time finding her lips in a tender connection. They linger there for a moment, lost in each other, before pulling back. In the mirror's reflection, their eyes meet, sparkling with affection. Larry pulls her in close, his lips trailing kisses down her cheek and neck, sending shivers down her spine. Oblivious to his gaze returning to the mirror, Ashley continues to brush her hair, a contented sigh escaping her lips. Larry rests his head comfortably on her shoulder, ready to continue their conversation.

(L)Patrol was pretty quiet today. As a matter of fact, we didn't see any signs of bandits, which was weird.

(A)Odd, usually we catch at least one or two in my traps each day. Oh well, maybe my strategy didn't work.

(L)Hey, I'm sure it's fine, you did a wonderful job as always. I did talk to Merig today and I'm sure Kate told you about what happened between them.

(A)[smiles] Yeah, I did, isn't that great? Kate was so happy about it when we talked. She was absolutely gushing over it.

(L)So was Merig. He was completely love-struck. He's built up so much courage lately, especially when it comes to Kate. Not too long ago, he was telling me how scared he was to tell her his feelings. And now, they've taken a big leap in their relationship.

(A)Yeah, but that's what a relationship is about, taking big leaps. They're both so happy together. I wish them nothing but happiness. They deserve it.

(L)I agree, but I wanna take that leap, too. When is it our turn to make love?

(A)Are you sure you want to take that leap?

(L)With you? Of course, I do. We can even take that leap with our eyes closed if you want.

(A)Will you be there to catch me if I fall?

(L)I won’t let you fall, Ash, I'll hold on to you so you don’t fall.

(A)Okay, I trust you. I’m ready. Let’s take that leap.

(L)I’m ready, too.

Ashley looks up at Larry, their eyes locking in a deep and intense connection. His hand reaches to gently brush her cheek as he leans down to press his lips against hers. She turns away from the mirror, fully facing him as they continue to kiss with increasing passion. Larry's hands roam over her body, exploring every curve before finally settling on her hips and waist as he pulls her closer to him. He then slowly kneels down and lifts her effortlessly into his arms, never breaking the intimate contact of their lips. Ashley wraps her arms and legs around Larry, clinging onto him tightly as he turns and carries her towards the bed. With gentle care, he lays her down on the soft sheets, still kissing her tenderly as they explore each other's bodies with eager hands. After a moment, Larry pulls back slightly and moves down to trace kisses along Ashley's neck, eliciting a contented sigh from her lips. They pause for a moment, taking in the sight of each other before Larry resumes his exploration. With delicate movements, he begins to undress Ashley, untying her robe and slowly revealing more of her flawless skin. As she lies there beneath him, watching him intently, Larry sits up on his knees and begins to undress himself. The two are soon completely naked as they share a smile and are fully lost in each other's gaze, knowing that this moment will be etched in their minds forever.

(L)I’m not exactly sure how long I've waited for this, but I think it's been well worth the wait for me.

(A)I'm sorry I kept you waiting. I wanted to make sure you were serious about me.

(L)I may joke around, but I don't joke around when it comes to you, Ash. I've always been serious about you and about how I feel. I wouldn't joke about that.

(A)I'm serious about you, too. Let’s not wait any longer.

(L)I love you, Ash.

(A)I love you, too, Larry.

Larry bends down and hovers over Ashley, gently running his hand down her face and tracing her lips with his finger. They gaze at each other with intense desire in their eyes. He then continues to trail his fingers all over Ashley's body, kissing her with fervor before they both give in to their desires and make love. Afterward, they lie in bed together, naked and breathless, holding each other under the sheets.

(A)So…was it worth it after all?

(L)Hell yeah, it was. Did you fall like you thought you would?

(A)No, you were there to hold on to me so I didn't, remember?

(L)That's what I'm here for. I'll never let you fall, Ash.

(A)I know, and I trust you.

(L)I love you, Ash.

(A)I love you, too, Larry.

Ashley's eyes well up, tears spilling down her cheeks. Larry, his heart twisting at the sight, reaches out and gently wipes them away with his thumb. Their gazes meet as he leans down, and their lips meet in a kiss, a silent promise of comfort and support. Ashley crumbles then, burying her face in his chest, sobs wracking her body. Larry holds her tight, his arms a steady anchor in her storm. Meanwhile, outside Merig's home, Barth stands in his usual gray cloak and blue mask. He keeps a watchful eye on the house, a silent guardian for the sleeping couple within. After a while, the urge for action stirs, the night calling to him. He embarks on a patrol, slipping through the back alleys, unseen by the watchful guards. His movements are stealthy as he checks for any lurking danger, any bandits waiting for a chance to exploit the city's slumber. He reaches the north entrance, a decision forming in his mind. With a determined stride, he steps out of the city walls and into the inky blackness of the forest. Moonlight, his only guide, casts an eerie glow on the trees as he scans the shadows for any hidden threats. Relief washes over him as his search proves fruitless. Just as he turns to head back, a deep, guttural growl shatters the night's stillness. It's a sound that sends shivers down his spine, a low, angry voice, undeniably male and undeniably unfriendly. Barth freezes, his senses on high alert.

(C)Hey, Barth.

(B)Who’s there?

Barth whirls around, dropping into a fighting stance and readying his magic. His gaze lands on a pale-skinned goblin clad in black, a torch casting flickering shadows on his masked face. He steps out of the darkness, approaching Barth and stopping directly in front of him. Slowly, the mask slides down, revealing a face marred by a deep scar that runs vertically from his forehead to his chin. Barth's eyes bulge in recognition. He yanks down his own mask and hood, his own face exposed to the dim light as he stares at the scowling goblin.

(B)Cormac? What the hell are you doing here?

(C)You’re really pissing me off, Barth, I’ve sent all these bandits out here to bring you back to the camp just for them to come back empty-handed, so I figured I’d come and get you myself. But don’t worry, I brought some help, so there’s no need to try to resist.

(B)You need to stop this, Cormac, you’re gonna leave that human alone and let her and Merig live in peace. She has nothing to do with this grudge you’re holding.

(C)I warned you a long time ago that if you ever left the bandits, I would go through with making Merig and Larry’s life hell. I should’ve done it when they left.

(B)Well, I warned you that if you hurt Merig or Larry, I’d kick your ass. I should’ve left with them. I did what I should’ve done a long time ago. But I’m here now and I’m here to help protect Kate.

(C)We’re going to get that human whether you like it or not.

(B)Try me, Cormac, you better leave Kate alone. You should’ve listened to us when we told you about humans. Not all of them are pieces of shit, I would know. You forget Merig and I were raised by them. Kate is a very kind person, and she doesn’t deserve this!

(C)Oh don’t worry, we’re not taking her tonight since Merig is with her. We want to make sure she’s alone. We came to take you back first, so you didn’t get in the way and I’ll make sure you don’t leave the camp so that Gordo can bring her to me.

(B)I swear if you hurt her, Cormac, all hell will break loose. You have no idea what Merig is capable of. He loves that human that much. He even decided to mate with her.

(C)He what?! He mated with a human?!

(B)Does that piss you off, Cormac? Well, tough shit, if you do anything to her, Merig will be out for blood and I’ve already seen it firsthand. That’s just how much he loves her and cares about her.

(C)Well then, that’ll be even more fun. Now let’s go, I can’t have you screwing this up for me.

(B)I left the bandits. You have no power over me anymore. You let your position in the camp go to your head. You’re so hell-bent on getting your revenge on Merig and Larry, I’m convinced it’s because you still care about them. You didn’t use to be like this, Cormac. Just stop this and see for yourself. Come live here and the humans will accept you.

(C)Bullshit! Boys! It’s time for Barth to come home.

The archer bandits aim their arrows and bolts on Barth as he channels a thunder spell. A surge of dark-clad figures explodes from the trees and bushes. Bandit ogres, and goblins brandishing menacing their weapons. Barth recognizes he's outnumbered. With a desperate attempt to scare them off, he unleashes the thunder spell above their heads, the crackle of magic echoing through the trees. Arrows fly as Barth dives for cover. He scrambles to his feet and turns on his heel, fleeing into the dark forest. As he weaves through the trees, he throws fire spells back at the pursuing bandits, hoping to slow their advance.

(C)Damnit, Barth! Go after him!

The bandits, spurred by the failed spells, plunge deeper into the forest, their pursuit relentless. Barth throws fire over his shoulder in a desperate attempt to deter them, but they surge forward. A few counter with their own spells, forcing him to dodge and weave through the trees. One bandit, a cunning one, levels a crossbow and fires. The bolt flies true, but instead of a deadly tip, it unfurls a weighted net. It catches Barth squarely, sending him sprawling to the ground in a tangled mess. The bandits screech to a halt. Cormac, on horseback, thunders up and slides to a stop beside a struggling Barth.

(C)You knew damn well running wouldn’t do you any good, Barth.

(B)You have no idea what you’re getting yourself into, Cormac. Just let things go and no one has to get hurt. Why do you still insist on doing this?

(C)You, Merig, and Larry were my best friends, you were like brothers to me, then those two decided they wanted to leave! The group was our home, and I always wanted to be its leader and things would change. I never wanted them to leave! You all kept trying to get me to live with humans, who hate us! This scar on my face is living proof that we can’t trust any of them! As soon as I heard Merig fell in love with that human, I found my golden opportunity. Merig and Larry are going to get what they deserve for leaving.

(B)What about Larry’s human? He fell in love with a human, too. She’s a guard, like Merig and Larry.

(C)That alchemist with the red hair? She’s the one that keeps setting those traps. Nah, it would be fun, but I only need one human to play this out and Kate seems to be the weakest between the two of them.

(B)I’m telling you, you’re gonna regret this. Merig would kill for that human if he had to.

(C)We’ll see about that. Let’s go, boys! Get Barth off the ground, tie him up, and put him on a horse. Make sure he doesn’t do anything stupid.

Rough hands yank Barth upright, his world tilting as the bandits haul him to his feet. They waste no time, their movements practiced as they bind his wrists with tight ropes, effectively snuffing out any chance of him conjuring magic. With a grunt, they heave him onto the back of a horse, another bandit taking the reins. Barth is carted away, the night's revelry ending in his capture.
