A few days pass, and the weekend arrives. It's the morning of Kate and Merig's date. Kate bustles around the kitchen, cooking breakfast. She's finally using those mushrooms she gathered. Ashley, drawn by the delicious aroma, wanders downstairs to find Kate cooking with a wide smile on her face.
(A)Oh my god, that smells really good. Are those the mushrooms you picked the other day?
(K)Yep, I’ve been really excited to use them, and today’s a special day.
(A)That’s right, you got the hot date tonight. Are you still nervous?
(K)Not as much. I’m more excited than nervous.
(A)That’s good to hear. Are you feeling okay since the incident in the forest?
(K)Yeah, the shock pretty much wore off the next day when Merig and I talked, and he just made everything better. He always knows what to say, and just simply being around him makes everything better.
(A)I’m glad you’re feeling better. You look happier, probably from when you two kissed.
(K)[smiles] Yeah, I can’t stop thinking about that. The happiness I felt in that moment, completely overpowered the anxiety I felt from the incident. He makes me really happy, Ash.
(A)It’s good that he makes you happy. It’s always good to see you happy. It makes me happy along with you. And if Merig didn’t make you happy, I’d have to kick his ass.
(K)Merig‘s always been so good to me, though. If I ever needed his help with something, he would drop whatever he was doing and help me. Of course, I always made sure he wasn’t doing anything important before asking. And if I was upset or anything, he’d always do his best to cheer me up. He says he hates seeing me upset.
(A)When it comes to you, he absolutely hates seeing you upset. Merig is a good person. He always has been as long as I’ve known him. He’s a good fighter, too. He’s the biggest badass, with a bow and arrow.
(K)Oh absolutely, I’ve seen him fight, he’s amazing at what he does. It’s one thing that made me fall in love with him. I remember when I wanted to brush up on my magic and Merig let me use the training grounds. I watched him at the targets while I practiced my spells. It was so much fun watching him shoot the targets. I was completely mesmerized. And if I ever hurt myself, he was always there to whisk me off to see Nessa. Luckily, I didn’t make too many visits to her, but she’s always a joy to talk to.
(A)Yeah, Larry did the same for me when I was training. Nessa is outstanding, and chatty as hell, but she’s an amazing healer. I remember training my alchemy skills and getting hurt a few times, and I had to visit her when one of my skills would blow up in my face. Thankfully, I wasn’t hurt too badly.
(K)Oh yeah, she’s a wonderful healer. Well, I should finish up with breakfast and get ready for tonight.
(A)I can do your hair and some makeup if you want.
(K)Just hair, no makeup, you know me, I’m not the biggest fan of it.
(A)Okay, okay, just hair then, you’re gonna look gorgeous and Merig will love it.
(K)I hope so, I want to look good for him.
Ashley and Kate are deep in conversation when a sudden knock at the door interrupts them. Both women turn towards the sound, curiosity etched on their faces. Ashley rises from her seat and walks towards the door, her movements filled with a hint of anticipation. With a twist of the knob, the door swings open to reveal Merig standing on the doorstep, a wide grin plastered across his face. Ashley throws her arms open in greeting.
(A)Oh hey, Merig.
(M)Hey, Ash, is Kate around?
(A)Yeah, she’s cooking breakfast like she always does. Come on in.
Merig beams as he accepts Ashley's invitation, stepping inside the house. Ashley shuts the door behind him and returns to her seat at the table. Merig spots Kate in the kitchen and heads in her direction. Kate turns just as he approaches, a smile blossoming on her face. Merig throws out a cheerful greeting, and Kate lights up at the sight of him.
(M)Good morning, Kate.
(K)Good morning, Merig, what brings you here this morning?
(M)Just thought I’d check up on you since we last talked. Are you doing any better?
(K)Much better, I’m just cooking with those mushrooms we gathered the other day. You're more than welcome to join us for breakfast. You have to try these.
(M)Sounds good, as long as it’s your cooking, then I’m more than happy to join you.
(K)[giggles] You’re too kind, Merig.
(M)I’m really glad you’re doing better since the incident.
(K)How about you? Are you doing okay?
(M)I’m fine, no need to worry about me.
(K)You say that, but I do worry about you, Merig. I’m here if you ever need to talk.
(M)I appreciate that, Kate, I promise you I’m just fine.
(K)You wanna try some of these mushrooms?
(M)Sure, I’d love to.
The smiles bloom between them as Kate pivots back to the stove, intent on finishing breakfast. Merig saunters over, his gaze landing on the mushrooms they picked together sizzling in the pan. He glances down at Kate, then leans in, planting a soft kiss on her cheek. Kate meets his gaze, another smile playing on her lips, before offering a slice of the cooked mushroom for him to try. He accepts it, but his expression takes a sharp turn. Surprise washes over him, writ large on his face.
(M)Wow, you were right, those are really good, they’re perfect.
(K)I know, right? I mixed the golden ones in there as well. That’s the one you just tried. The flavor of the other mushrooms mixed with them is incredible. I’m so glad you found these that day.
(M)I’m glad we found them, too. Oh um, we’re still on for the date tonight, right?
(K)Yeah, of course, I’m really excited.
(M)Me too, We’re gonna have a lot of fun, I can’t wait to show you what I have planned.
(K)I can’t wait either.
(M)Once I get done eating, Larry and I have some patrolling to do. I want to go out into the forest to make sure those bandits aren’t causing trouble.
(K)I see you’re still paranoid about that. I don’t blame you, though.
(M)They’ve made it clear what they’re up to. I’m not taking any chances. Those filthy bandits have the nerve to threaten me and attempt to harm you, but they don’t know who they’re messing with. Besides, I don’t want to risk you getting hurt, since you seem to be their target. So I’m taking every precautionary measure necessary. They’re not going to lay a hand on you, Kate, if they know what’s good for them.
(K)[smiles] I appreciate everything you’re doing, Merig, but you better be careful out there, okay? Promise me.
(M)I promise I’ll be just fine. I’ve been doing this work for a long time, so you have nothing to worry about. You’re the one I’m worried about the most, and I worry about you when I’m not around to make sure you’re okay. You have to promise me, too, that you’ll be careful here in the city when I’m out patrolling.
(K)I promise I’ll be careful, my love…I love you.
(M)[smiles] I love you, too, sweetheart.
The sizzling stops as Kate steps back from the stove, a playful smile on her face as she stands before Merig. He returns the smile softly, his hand reaching out to gently cup her cheek. Kate leans into his touch, her own hand finding his. They lock eyes, as they stare at each other before Kate takes the initiative. Stepping closer, she wraps her arms around his torso, pulling him into a tight hug. Her eyes flutter closed, savoring the moment. Merig melts into her embrace, his lips brushing her forehead in a tender kiss. He glances over at Ashley, who beams at the heartwarming scene. She gives him a reassuring nod, which he returns with a grateful smile. Later that evening, the anticipation hangs heavy as Kate and Merig prepare for their date. Merig stands beside Larry in front of the pub, waiting for the women to arrive. Dressed smartly in a dress shirt, vest, and tie with sleeves rolled up for a casual touch, he can't quite shake off his nerves. He fidgets slightly, turning to Larry with a question about his appearance.
(M)Alright, how do I look?
(L)Do you want my honest answer?
(M)Come on, Larry, this isn’t a joking matter. Now is the time my nerves decide to go crazy.
(L)Merig, you look fine, just be yourself. I’m sure Kate is just as nervous as you.
(M)She told me she was excited.
(L)Well, there you go. Stop being nervous and be excited instead.
(M)I’m trying, I just don’t want anything to go wrong, that’s all.
(L)Merig, you’ve already kissed her, and you seemed to not screw that up. I’m not sure what exactly you’re expecting to go wrong.
(M)Well…I’m going to ask her to be with me, officially. We haven’t exactly established anything, not even on her birthday when we confessed to each other.
(L)I see, well she feels the same way you do, so I doubt she’ll say “no”.
(M)I mean, you never know, people can feel one way and act completely differently.
(L)That’s true, but I have a feeling it won’t turn out that way with Kate, especially since she’s already expressed her feelings about you. Besides, you’ve said those three important words to each other already, that right there definitely seals it.
(M)[sigh] You know what? You’re right, I’ve got this. I’ve got everything planned. I’m just hoping I can pull it off.
(L)I believe in you, pal. You’re both going to have fun. Just relax.
(M)Thanks, buddy, now isn’t the time to lose my confidence.
(L)That’s the spirit. The brave Commander Merig Flynn is about to go on a date with the woman of his dreams. You’ve gotten this far, so don’t stop now.
(M)You’re right, I can’t just throw away what I’ve accomplished already. If I want to be with Kate, then I have to go on this date and be optimistic.
(L)That’s the spirit. This date will be a success, I know it. Capture that woman’s heart, and make her smile.
(M)Alright, I’m ready.
The pre-date jitters momentarily forgotten, Merig brushes himself off, a newfound confidence washing over him. He straightens his sleeves and tie, a subtle gesture that gives a clear impression. Suddenly, his droopy goblin ears perk up, and his gaze, along with Larry's, shoots towards the distance. Two figures emerge from the shadows, growing clearer with each step as they head towards the warm glow of the pub's exterior lights. It's Ashley and Kate, but Merig is momentarily speechless. Kate, in a stunning long, green autumn dress with brown flats, complements her outfit with her usual half-updo bun hairstyle, a familiar yet breathtaking sight. Her voice, tinged with excitement, reaches him as she draws closer.
(K)Merig? Is that you?
(M)Yeah, it’s me. What do you think?
(K)Oh my god, it’s been forever since I’ve seen you dressed like that. Not since the banquets we used to go to. I almost didn’t recognize you. You look very handsome.
(M)Yeah, I wanted to dress nicely. It’s not too much, is it?
(K)Of course not, not at all. What about me? How do I look?
(M)Beautiful, as always.
(K)[giggles] Why, thank you.
(A)Oh, the banquet, now that brings back some memories.
(L)Yeah, we all need to go again when we get the chance.
(M)We definitely do. It’s been so long.
(K)We can always go back sometime soon, that would be fun.
(A)Hell yeah it would be.
(L)Alright, you two lovebirds. Are you ready for your date?
(K)Absolutely, I’m really excited.
(M)Good, ‘cause I am too and we’re going to have fun, I promise.
(A)Alright, you two go have fun. Larry and I will hang out here for a bit.
(M)Okay, I’ll walk Kate home when we’re done.
(A)Sounds like a plan. Don’t worry about a curfew, stay out as long as you want.
(M)Are you ready, Kate?
(K)I’m ready when you are.
(M)Shall we?
(K)[smiles] We shall.
(M)We’ll see you two later.
(L)See you, have fun.
(A)Enjoy your date.
(K)Oh, we will, don’t worry.
With a gentlemanly gesture, Merig extends his arm towards Kate. Her smile widens, and she takes it with a delighted giggle. Together, they form a picture of happiness as they stroll off, their date officially underway. Left behind, Larry and Ashley watch them go, a knowing smile playing on Ashley's lips as she observes the budding romance. They linger outside the pub for a moment longer, content to witness the start of something special.
(A)Wow, Merig looks pretty snazzy tonight.
(L)Yeah, he does, that’s all thanks to me.
(A)What do you mean?
(L)Well, I had to take him out and buy him a bunch of new clothes. He only ever wears his light armor, so he doesn’t really have anything nice to wear or much at all in general, except for what he used to wear to the banquets.
(A)Wow, I only went out and helped Kate pick out a few outfits. You bought Merig an entirely new wardrobe.
(L)Pretty much, but he needed it.
(A)I’d say, it was nice of you to help him, though.
(L)Yeah, he’s my best friend, too, so I figured I’d do something nice for him every once in a while.
(A)[giggles] Yeah, that’s what friends are for.
(L)Yep.
The laughter fades as Kate and Merig disappear into the distance. Ashley and Larry stand in a comfortable silence, their gazes lingering on the spot where the couple vanished. Finally, Larry breaks the quiet. A playful smile curves his lips as he leans in a little, his voice dropping to a flirtatious tone. Ashley, caught off guard, swivels her head back to face him, her brow furrowed in confusion.
(L)So, when is it my turn?
(A)Your turn for what?
(L)To take you out on a date? You know I’ve been asking you for years.
A slow smile spreads across Ashley's face, her eyes rolling playfully. She falls silent for a moment, lost in thought. Gathering her composure, a smirk tugs at her lips as she shoots Larry a sidelong glance. He waits expectantly for her reply. With a resigned sigh, she concedes and turns to face him, ready to answer his question.
(A)Maybe soon.
(L)Well I tried…wait what?…Did you say “maybe soon”?
(A)Yeah, I did.
(L)Well, damn, that’s not a “no”. I think that’s the first time you haven’t said “no”.
(A)Really, it is?
(L)Uh, yeah…so…there’s a chance?
(A)[sigh] It’s possible, I suppose.
(L)Don’t play with my emotions, Ash. Are you being serious?
(A)Yes Larry, I’m being serious. I know you’ve been asking me out for a long time now. And I’ve been thinking it over for the past few weeks.
(L)...And?
(A)And…[sigh] I think I’m willing to give it a try.
(L)[smiles] Okay…so…when?
(A)We’ll talk inside. It’s cold out here.
Ashley shivers and tries to warm herself before she turns to open the pub door and walks inside, with Larry still standing outside. As Ashley walks in further, she looks back to see if Larry is following her and sees him still standing outside in shock. And holds the door open while she calls out to him.
(A)Larry, are you coming in?
(L)Uh yeah, sorry.
Larry recovers from his shock and turns, following Ashley into the pub. They enter the pub together and head back to their usual table to chat. Meanwhile, Merig and Kate sit at the new restaurant. Kate has been eager to try. They discuss the food as they enjoy their meals.
(K)Wow, I wasn’t expecting the food to be this good. I’m so glad we came here.
(M)Yeah, I think it’s amazing, too, but it’s not as good as your cooking, of course.
(K)You’re too kind, I’m still in shock, your outfit looks really nice, Merig.
(M)Thanks, the truth is, I’ve been slacking on buying new clothes in general. All I ever wear is my gear, so I figured it was time, so I went shopping with Larry.
(K)Well, that’s good. I got myself some new clothes as well, and I threw this ensemble together for tonight.
(M)You look beautiful, Kate, granted you look beautiful in anything you wear.
(K)[smiles] Thank you, Merig, and you look very handsome. I remember dressing up like this when we used to go to the banquet every weekend.
(M)Yeah, that takes me back. We had a lot of fun, didn't we?
(K)We did and I miss it. We really should do it again soon, like old times.
(M)I don’t see why we shouldn’t. I’d love to go and you could be my date this time.
(K)[smiles] Oh I definitely will be. So have you figured out anything about the bandits?
(M)Not yet, they’ve been hiding lately. Usually, we catch a lot of them in traps and we get hoards of them outside the walls. But ever since we fought that sizable group with Gordo, we haven’t seen much of them.
(K)I see, maybe they know you, and the guards are just too strong for them to fight.
(M)If that was the case, they wouldn’t have sent a bandit out to attempt to assassinate you.
(K)You have a point. I guess you’re right. So the only evidence we have is the threat Gordo made, and the bandit that tried killing me?
(M)Pretty much, which makes me think that there’s something bigger going on. Maybe the bandits are plotting something.
(K)Well, what can you do about it? It’s not like you and the guards are going to go find their hideout and confront them.
(M)We don’t even know where it is, even if we want to. And if we followed one of them, they’d only lead us off of the path to the camp. Bandits aren’t stupid. Trust me, we're pretty familiar with these guys.
(K)I get it. Thank you for protecting me, Merig. I feel I don’t say that as often as I should. And the last thing I want to do is make you feel underappreciated.
(M)You make me feel more than appreciated, don't worry. It’s no problem at all. It’s my job to protect people, Kate, not only to protect the city but to protect you. You’re the most important person in Tara to me, and the most important person to me in the entire world. I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure you’re safe. I don’t want you to feel like I’m keeping you in the city and holding you hostage.
(K)I don’t feel that way at all, Merig. I know you’re just trying to protect me. And I’m very grateful to you, and I’m so lucky to have you.
(M)I’m the luckiest goblin in the world to have you, Kate. Besides, I told you I protect you because I love you, and I meant that.
(K)[smiles] I love you, too, Merig. I appreciate everything you do for me. I feel like I owe you.
(M)Hey, you don't owe me anything. You've done a lot for me, too. I'm not the only one that deserves praise. You've made me very happy this entire year that you've been here. You bring a lot of happiness into my life…you are my happiness, Kate.
(K)[smiles] Oh Merig, you’re my happiness, too. You're so sweet and gentle towards me, and you always say the sweetest things that make me smile and feel good about myself. I'm so glad I came to this city and met such a wonderful person as you.
(M)I'm glad you came here, too, otherwise I wouldn't have met such an amazing woman like you. Why wouldn't I treat you with love and care? That's how you're supposed to treat the person you love, and I treat you that way because I love you.
(K)You're absolutely right, Merig. I also wanted to ask you something, because the curious cat in me won't shut up.
(M)Of course, ask away.
(K)Were you serious about your answer that day at Donna's, when Clara asked us if we were getting married?
(M)[blush] O-O-Oh, w-w-well, I-I-I, uh.
(K)[giggles] It's okay Merig, relax, you don't have to be so nervous to answer, just take a deep breath.
(M)[sigh] I'm sorry, the question just caught me off guard, so I wasn't expecting it.
(K)It's okay, Merig, there's no rush, so take your time to answer it.
(M)[sigh] Of course, I was serious about it. I do want to marry you someday, why wouldn't I? You get married to someone you love, right?
(K)[smiles] You’re absolutely right. I don't know, it just really surprised me when you said it that day and I've been thinking about it since.
(M)Well, I wouldn't joke about something like that, especially not when it comes to you. Who wouldn't want to be with someone like you for the rest of their life? I know I would.
(K)[blush] Oh Merig, you just might make my heart explode. You think too highly of me.
(M)I can't help but feel that way about you, Kate. Would you want to marry me someday?
(K)[smiles] Of course I would, Merig, you're so good to me, and you've never hurt me.
(M)Why would I? I love and care about you too much. I would never dream of hurting you.
(K)I know, and that's why I love you. That's what I love about you. You're always so kind to me, and I love it.
(M)I want to treat you with love and kindness and I'll continue to do so. I'll continue to protect you from harm, and I'll always be there when you need me. I'll hold your hand, or put my arms around you and hold you, and I'll even kiss you if you want me to.
(K)[giggles] Of course, I'd love nothing more than for you to do all of that for me. I love you, Merig.
(M)[smiles] I love you, too, Kate.
(K)I’m having a wonderful time tonight with you, so far, Merig.
(M)Me too, but it’s not over yet. The best part of this date is yet to come.
(K)[smiles] I can’t wait, I’m sure it’s going to be amazing, knowing you.
(M)Oh trust me, you’re going to love it.
The two lock eyes with a smile as their conversation flows and they finish their meal together at the restaurant. Back at the pub, Ashley and Larry occupy their usual table, engaged in their own conversation. Ashley draws in a deep breath, collecting her thoughts before turning to Larry and initiating a conversation.
(A)Alright, let’s talk.
(L)So do you really want to give me a chance? What made you consider it?
(A)Well, to be honest, I’ve been ignoring a lot of feelings that I’ve bottled up over the years that we’ve known each other. I’ve just been apprehensive about telling you about them and I figured it’s time we talked, so I can explain everything.
(L)Anything you have to say, I’m all ears, Ash.
(A)[sigh] As you know, I haven’t had the best of luck with dating. When I first got here, I only expected to train to be a royal alchemist, so I didn’t expect to find love. I wasn’t initially looking for it, but I knew that inevitably, I would.
(L)You can find love in the places you least expect to, that’s a given.
(A)Yeah, well, I wasn’t prepared for the shitstorm that was my dating life. Between guard training and the work I was doing here for Sherry, I didn’t have much time to do anything. So when I finally became a guard. I was able to live comfortably and not have to work here anymore. I was able to start dating, and that’s when I started dating Ryan, and you know how that went.
(L)Yeah, I remember all too well. I really wanted to punch his lights out. He pissed me off every time I saw him after what you told me.
(A)Well, I’m revealing every detail that I didn’t share before when I told you.
(L)I'm here to listen, Ash.
(A)Well, Ryan begged me to give him another chance after he was the one that left me, just because I spent most of my time doing guard work. He wanted to monopolize my time, and I told him that he couldn’t, or I’d lose my position in the guards. He was upset, but he understood, and he agreed to not be so selfish with my time each day, and I thought nothing of it. Then that fateful day came when I went to his house to see him after my guard duties, and I knocked on his door. I was expecting Ryan to answer it, but he didn’t…A woman with similar red hair to mine answered the door, and she had no idea who I was. I didn’t say anything to her and left after she told me that she was Ryan’s girlfriend. I cried myself to sleep that night, and the next day I came to the pub. You noticed I was depressed, but it took me a while to say anything to you. But all I told you was that he was unfaithful, and I didn’t go into detail.

(L)I’m so sorry, Ash, I can’t imagine how you felt. I remember you didn’t talk much for a while, and I tried really hard to cheer you up.
(A)[smiles] Yeah you did, I’ll never forget, and that’s honestly when I realized how I felt about you. The time I spent training with you meant a lot, and my feelings for you started growing, but I didn’t realize it at the time. Granted, your constant flirting was a factor.
(L)[chuckles] So my sweet talking did work, huh?
(A)[giggles] For the most part. It was your willingness to put a smile on my face, and make me laugh with your jokes, and working together to kick bandit ass, as you liked to put it.
(L) Yeah, we’ve had some really fun times and I’ve enjoyed them a lot, especially with you.
(A)Well, after I left Ryan, I started dating again. But I was apprehensive about dating the people I worked with, and that’s why I kept turning you down. I thought that our being together wouldn’t be good for us and it would affect our work. And the fact that I didn’t know if I was ready to be with a Fomor, since I had never dated one…and the fact that I was worried that I would get hurt again, I didn’t want to ruin anything between us.
(L)I understand all of that, Ash. I’ve only ever been with one woman since I came to Tara, and it was way before I met you and fell in love with you. It was the first time I had been with someone, let alone a human. I didn’t pressure you or get upset with you for turning me down. I just flirted with you and asked you every once in a while if you’d at least go on a date with me. I never expected you to drop everything and run into my arms and we’d live happily ever after. After you told me that Ryan was unfaithful, I toned it down and stopped asking so much. But I at least kept trying to make you smile and laugh with my flirting and my jokes.
(A)And they worked. You made me feel good about myself again and I appreciated it so much. After having so much bad luck with men, I really needed someone to tell me that I was worth loving. Being heartbroken doesn’t exactly do anything good on one’s self-esteem. I was torn up, and I felt broken, like there was something wrong with me that made men want to hurt me. All I ever did was show them love, and they ripped my heart right out of my chest and played with it as if it were their personal toy. I didn’t want to keep getting hurt, so I just gave up on relationships altogether.
(L)I’m sorry, Ash, I wish there was something I could’ve done other than flirting and being a nuisance all the time.
(A)I didn’t mind it at all, Larry. You did a lot more good than you think.
(L)Well, I can guarantee that if you give me a chance, you’ll never have to worry about being hurt ever again. I give you my word, and you know how good I am at making promises. I love you way too much to inflict any kind of pain on you, and if I could, I would take all the men that hurt you and line them up and punch each one of them in their insufferable faces. I couldn’t stand seeing you get hurt, especially when you would come to the pub crying, or depressed and tell Merig and me all about your heartache. Your heart is so precious to me, Ash, and I wanted you to take the time to heal from everything. I didn’t expect you to jump into a relationship with me right away. That’s why my flirting hasn’t been all that frequent lately. I’d wait for however long you’d want me to, as long as I get the chance to be with you.
(A)Honestly, it was my fault for getting hurt. I should’ve been smarter about who I dated.
(L)Hey, we all make mistakes and we learn from them.
(A)Well, it’s time I moved on, and tonight, I’m going to tell you the truth about how I feel. Watching Kate and Merig confess their love for each other made me realize that I can’t hide my feelings anymore, and I can’t keep being afraid of history repeating itself. I want to be happy again, and not have my love be taken advantage of. And as much determination as you have to win my heart, I don’t feel I’d need to worry about that.
(L)And you’d be right, Ash, I love you more than anything, and the last thing I’d want to do is give you a reason to hate me or not trust me, or give you a reason to think that I would hurt you because I’d never do that and I’ll do everything to prove it.
(A)I already trust you, Larry, and I want to finally be loved and not get hurt. I want you to flirt with me every day and make me feel like I matter, and that I’m worthy of love. You make me feel that way, and I love you very much for it. I love you, Larry, and I want to be with you, and give you the chance that I should’ve given you a long time ago, and I’m sorry it took this long.
(L)Don’t ever be sorry, Ash, I would’ve waited for you for as long as you needed me to, and I’d still be here, ready to take you in my arms and sweep you off your feet. I don’t want to be with any other woman. You’re all I want because you’re all I think about and the only woman I’ll ever love.
(A)Alright then, you want me? You have me, I’m yours. Take me into your arms and sweep me off my feet, Larry Dugan.
(L)Oh, I’m way ahead of you, my beautiful red-hot flame. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to do a little happy dance, but I’ll contain myself. Thank you for giving me a chance, Ash, or rather, giving us a chance.
(A)And thank you for not breaking my heart, Larry. I trust that you’ll take care of it.
(L)I’ll guard it with my life and heal the scars that so many before me have bestowed upon it. I love you, Ash.
(A)I love you, too, Larry.
Larry and Ashley remain at the pub, their conversation weaving on. Finally, they decide to call it a night, and Larry escorts Ashley home. Meanwhile, Kate and Merig emerge from the restaurant, their meal complete. As they stroll along, Merig reaches out and takes Kate's hand gently. She squeezes his hand back, nuzzling closer and resting her head on his arm. Their conversation continues at a leisurely pace. Kate steals a glance at Merig, noticing a somber expression cloud his face. His gaze remains fixed on the ground, prompting a flicker of concern in Kate's eyes. She breaks the silence with a question.
(K)Hey, what’s on your mind, my love?
(M)I couldn’t help but notice that some people in the restaurant were giving us strange looks.
(K)Really? I didn’t even notice. I don’t know why they would be giving us strange looks.
(M)It’s probably because of me.
(K)What do you mean, why would it be because of you?
(M)Well, I’m sure it’s not common for people to see a human and a goblin on a date together.
(K)Why would that bother them? Humans and Fomors live together these days. I don’t think it would be uncommon for a human and a goblin to fall in love, at least not where I’m from.
(M)That’s the thing, I think it is uncommon, at least here it is. It’s not exactly unheard of. It’s happened before, of course, but I guess you can say that it’s not widely accepted.
(K)Yeah but, so far the people we know don’t seem to have a problem.
(M)You’re right, and that’s because most people accept it. Most people want to coexist with Fomors, but of course, you have the people that don’t.
(K)Yeah, I guess you’re right, but I don’t care. I grew up with the belief that everyone should coexist.
(M)Well, your parents raised you right, Kate, you’re a wonderful human and you never even questioned or mentioned the fact that I’m a goblin and you never had a problem with it either.
(K)I never had a reason to, Merig. You and Larry have been great to me and I figured if Ashley knew you both well enough, I had no reason to doubt her judgment of you. I ended up falling in love with you and here we are enjoying a night together. I was more than happy to agree to go on this date with you.
(M)Even though I’m not human?
(K)Exactly, I love you just the way you are, Merig.
(M)I'm still surprised that you even felt the same. I never in a million years would have guessed you would end up falling in love with me, too. Yeah, we always had fun in the past, but had I known about how you felt, I wouldn’t have been so hesitant.
(K)I honestly wouldn’t have hesitated either, but I had no idea that you were in love with me, either.
(M)I guess we kept each other guessing.
(K)Yeah, but I think it was all worth it. We got to know each other this whole time, and I think getting to know someone is a good thing before rushing into anything. But I’m a hopeless romantic, and once I fell in love with you, I wanted to be with you. There were just some things stopping me.
(M)I’m not upset about it by any means, so don’t worry. Although I should’ve had a lot more confidence and courage than I did, otherwise this date probably would’ve happened sooner. So the only person I have a right to be upset with is myself.
(K)You’re probably right, but you know what? Better late than never, right? Don’t beat yourself up, Merig. Let’s just enjoy tonight and what’s going on right now.
(M)You’re right, Kate, and lucky for you, we’re almost where we need to be.
(K)It’s a good thing it isn’t too cold out yet.
(M)It’s okay, I’d keep you warm if it was.
Kate gazes up at Merig, their smiles lingering in the air as their conversation continues. They walk hand-in-hand, a comfortable silence settling between them for a moment. After a while, their stroll leads them to the empty city square, illuminated by the street lamps. Merig comes to a halt, and Kate glances up at him, then around the unfamiliar surroundings, a flicker of confusion crossing her face.
(M)Alright, we’re here.
(K)The square? What are we doing here?
(M)Well, we’ve got all this room out here, and no one is around. How about we dance?
(K)But there’s no music playing.
(M)That's okay, you don’t have to have music to dance.
Merig's hand remains clasped in Kate's as their smiles soften. He leans down slightly, meeting her gaze for a moment, then turns and starts walking forward. With a gentle tug, he guides Kate along beside him, pulling her closer towards the heart of the city square. Their stroll continues, a comfortable silence settling before them. Finally, Merig stops. Their destination, a water fountain, standing prominently in front of them.
(K)The fountain? Why here?
(M)You’ll see…I need you to do me a favor and close your eyes.
(K)Oh, alright.
Confusion flickers across Kate's face, but trusting Merig, she squeezes her eyes shut when he asks. He gently turns her, their bodies brushing as they stand facing each other in front of the city square's fountain. Merig takes both of Kate's hands in his, his touch warm and reassuring. A moment hangs in the air, then a strange sensation washes over them. Unaware, Kate remains with her eyes closed as their legs slowly lift off the ground. They continue to rise, higher and higher, until Merig reaches a desired altitude, perhaps a hundred feet or so. Satisfied, he breaks the silence, his voice reaching Kate's ears even with her eyes closed.
(M)Are you ready?
(K)I’m ready.
(M)Alright, now I need you to stay calm, and open your eyes.
Kate's eyelids flutter open. She stares at Merig, confusion clouding her features. Her gaze darts around the unfamiliar surroundings. A gasp escapes her lips as she looks down and realizes they're no longer on solid ground. Her legs buckle, and she stumbles. Panic surges through her, and she clutches at Merig for support. Merig grabs onto her and tries to calm her and assures her that she is safe.
(M)Hey it’s okay, you’re not gonna fall I promise, I’ve got you.
(K)M-M-Merig, w-w-what are we doing all the way up here?
(M)[smiles] Well, we’re floating, levitating. We’re in the air.
(K)F-F-Floating?
(M)Yeah, here I’ll show you.
Merig backs up slowly, his hands still holding onto Kate's. She glances down at their feet, eyes widening as she sees them standing, floating as if they're walking on air. Kate peeks back up at Merig, a hint of calm replacing her initial panic. He releases her hands, and Kate stays suspended, surprised but not falling. Merig offers her a gentle smile, a silent reassurance of her safety. Kate returns the smile, and Merig speaks in a soothing voice.
(M)You see? We’re not gonna fall.
(K)S-S-So, why are we so high up?
(M)[smiles] Well, I figured it would be much better and more fun if we danced up here. The sky is our dance floor, Kate.
(K)[smiles] This is incredible, Merig, so this is what you had planned?
(M)Yeah, I thought it would be the perfect thing for us since it’s your favorite thing to do, and I wanted to surprise you with it.
(K)Well, I’m surprised, that’s for sure, and maybe a little scared.
(M)Don’t be scared. I’m here and I won’t let you fall, I promise. Are you ready to dance in the sky with me?
(K)[smiles] With you, Merig? I’m ready for anything.
(M)[smiles] Good, I’m ready for anything with you, too. Now try not to look down, and keep your eyes on me, okay? Do you trust me?
(K)Of course, I do. I trust you with my life, Merig.
(M)Good, ‘cause I’d never let you get hurt. Now, let’s dance, shall we?
(K)[smiles] We shall.
Merig extends his hand, and Kate eagerly takes it. He pulls her forward, his other hand gently finding its way to her waist. Kate instinctively places her other hand on his shoulder. They fall into their dance positions, a silent understanding passing between them. Merig initiates the dance, a slow and graceful movement. Kate follows his lead, her gaze locked on his as promised. All fear has vanished, replaced by a complete trust in him. A smile blooms on her face, mirroring his own, as they truly begin their dance. The world fades away as they lose themselves in the rhythm for an hour or so. They waltz across rooftops and pirouette over Rath Castle, their figures momentarily visible to a few skyward-gazing citizens. Even Ashley and Larry, walking hand-in-hand, catch a glimpse of their dancing shadows flitting across the moonlit ground. Smiles grace both Ashley's and Larry's faces as they witness the spectacle. Finally, after a timeless dance, they return to the square where their journey began. Happiness radiates from them as they exchange glances. Merig steps back, gently releasing her hands, and speaks.
(M)So, what did you think?
(K)That was amazing, Merig, I’m having so much fun, I think I’m gonna explode!
(M)Don’t do that, or we’d both be in trouble.
(K)[giggles] What about you? What did you think about dancing with me up here?
(M)I loved it, too. We danced among the moon and stars. I’m really glad you enjoyed it.
(K)Oh, I absolutely loved it! Thank you so much for this date, Merig. I’ve had a wonderful time dancing in the sky with you.
(M)Of course, I was able to spend time with you, dancing, so I had a wonderful time, too.
(K)I’d love to keep dancing, but I’m starting to get tired.
(M)Yeah, it’s getting late, we can go back down to the ground…but I gotta do one thing, first.
(K)What’s that?
(M)[smiles]…I have to kiss you.
(K)[smiles] Oh really, is that so?
(M)Yep, that’s how this works. Are you ready?
(K)With you, I’m always ready.
Merig pulls Kate closer, their eyes locked. He reaches out, his hands cupping her face with gentle caresses. He leans in, and Kate meets him halfway, both fluttering their eyes closed as their lips meet in a tender kiss. As the kiss deepens, they begin a slow descent back to the earth below. They float down, their bodies brushing against the air, until finally, their feet touch solid ground. The kiss lingers for a moment longer before Merig pulls away, their eyes meeting again with a soft smile playing on their lips. Unseen in the shadows around the square, a dark figure watches, a silent observer to their tender moment. As the figure melts away into the night, Merig takes Kate's hand as Kate is clinging to his arm and they begin to walk back to her home. A while later, they reminisce about the night's unforgettable dance and the joy it brought them.
(K)We should do that again sometime. It was so much fun, even though I'm terrified of heights. But with you there dancing with me, my fears just disappeared.
(M)That's good, cause I would never let you fall, Kate. I'm glad you trusted me, and I had a wonderful time dancing with you. And as long as you were there with me, I wasn’t afraid either.
(K)That's good, I trust you with my life, Merig…So, are you serious about going to the banquet next weekend?
(M)Only if you are.
(K)Let’s do it, then, I can tell Ash and you can tell Larry and we can all plan it.
(M)Sounds good, I wanna make sure they want to come along. I’m sure they will. They used to love going to the banquet, too.
(K)Yeah, we have a lot of memories there and I can’t wait to go back.
(M)Me neither, especially if I get to dance with you.
(K)Oh, I wanted to ask, what exactly did you do to make us float in the air like that?
(M)Oh right, it’s a spell called Sweetheart’s Flight. It’s a long story, but it gives two people the ability to fly, and I used it so we could dance like we did.
(K)Wow, that's amazing, we should definitely do that again, and not just for dancing.
(M)Sounds like it would be fun.
The conversation flows easily between them, punctuated by shared smiles. Kate leans into Merig's side, her head finding a comfortable resting place on his arm. They stroll along, a comfortable silence settling between them after a while. Finally, they reach Kate's doorstep. They both stop, turning to face each other. The unspoken question hangs in the air for a moment before they exchange their goodbyes.
(K)Thank you for everything tonight, Merig. I had such a wonderful time.
(M)Anytime, I had a wonderful time dancing with you, Kate.
(K)Me too, and I can’t wait to do it again. But for now, I think we should get some sleep.
(M)Good idea…but before I go, I wanted to ask you something.
(K)Sure, ask me anything, Merig.
(M)Well, you already know how I feel about you.
(K)Yeah, and you know how I feel about you, too.
(M)Right, well I’m gonna have more confidence to ask you this question than I did asking you out on this date. And I’m gonna have more courage than I did when I told you how I felt, so here goes nothing. Kate, you know I love you, right?
(K)[smiles] Yeah, and you know that I love you, too Merig.
(M)Well, I wanted to ask…Do you…want to be with me?…I know it’s probably not something you expected me to ask and I completely understand if your answer is no. But just know that you make me very happy, Kate, and I want nothing more than to make you happy, too, because I love seeing you smile and I want to do so many fun things with you. I want to dance with you for hours, and go on dates as much as we want, and we can even go to the banquet every weekend with you as my date. I want to do so much more with you and I cherish every second of every day that I get to see you. I know that at first, I worried about what people thought of a human and a Fomor being in love and possibly being together. Hell, I was worried that you were going to run away scared when I told you that I was in love with you. But to my surprise, you told me that you feel the same way about me, and it makes me happy that you do. I want to continue being happy and continue making you happy if you’ll let me. I told you I noticed the looks we got at the restaurant from the surrounding people, but honestly, I realized that I don’t care what people think anymore and I stopped caring about the possibility of being judged by other people for falling in love with a human and wanting to be with you. I just want to be with you, for as long as you can stand me, at least. The only thing that I was worried about, was if you loved me or not, or if you didn’t want to be with me because of what I am…so?
(K)[smiles] I’ve always had fun with you, Merig, whether it’s dancing, cracking jokes, foraging in the forest, eating all the delicious food we can get our hands on, and just having fun making memories together. And now, we’re making even more memories together, being in love, and spending more time together. I want to do so much more with you, too, and I can say with confidence that I made the right decision to move to this city to start a new life. I just never expected that I would fall in love, and no, I didn’t expect to fall in love with a goblin, but it wasn’t completely outside of the realm of possibilities, and I know that now. Believe it or not, I’m okay with it and honestly, if I had to do it all again, I would and I don’t regret anything, especially with you. And no, I was never going to run away scared, because I was never afraid of you to begin with, because of the kindness you have shown me since we met. However, I too was afraid to tell you how I felt for reasons relating to my past. But since I’ve known you for this long, I know the kind of person you are, so I put all of my trust in you. I want to be happy, and I want nothing more than to make you happy as well, Merig. I’m glad you finally found the confidence and the courage to ask me if I want to be with you, and that you had the courage to tell me how you felt, and to ask me out on this date. Although, I should have had more courage, myself, but that’s in the past and I told you how I feel and now you know. We both had so much fun and enjoyed the date we had tonight. Besides…I don’t give a shit about what other people think, either. I never did. I love you, and I’m glad that you stopped caring about what other people think. I don’t care what you are, Merig. I care about who you are. You only care about what I think, and I think you’re an amazing person and someone I fell in love with. You just happen to be a goblin and that’s fine by me. I won’t love you any less, Commander Merig Flynn.
Merig's surprise melts into a soft smile at her sweetness. He steps closer, drawn in by her warmth. His hands reach out, gently engulfing hers. Kate mirrors his touch, her gaze fixed on him with a smile that mirrors his own. He searches for the right words, ready to respond to her affection.
(M)And I won’t love you any less because you’re a human.
(K)That’s good to hear…But, there’s just one problem with your question.
(M)What’s that?
(K)[smiles] I thought we were already together.
Merig's eyes widened in surprise, his face flushing with astonishment. But the surprise quickly morphs into pure excitement. A sentimental smile forms on his lips, mirroring the one playing on Kate's. Kate takes a moment to gather her thoughts, formulating her answer to his earlier question.
(K)But to answer your question…yes, I would love nothing more than to be with you for as long as you can stand me, too.
(M)[chuckle] That won’t be a problem for me, I can promise you that.
(K)Oh, but you haven’t lived with me before, so I’m just warning you that I can be a pain.
(M)[smiles] I can handle it, as long as it’s you.
(K)[smiles] And as long as it’s you, Merig, I can handle being with you, too. Because I honestly wouldn’t want to share my love with anyone else.
(M)And I don't want to share my love with anyone else but you either, Kate.
(K)Well then, that settles it. I guess we’re now officially together.
(M)[smiles] Yeah, and I couldn’t be happier being with you.
(K)Me either, but I’m getting tired, so we should both probably get some sleep.
(M)I agree, it’s been a long and fun night.
(K)I couldn’t agree more, and I can’t wait for the banquet next weekend, it’ll be fun.
(M)Hell yeah, it will be.
(K)I’ll see you tomorrow, then.
(M)I look forward to it.
(K)I do, too. I love you, Commander Merig Flynn.
(M)I love you, too, Kate.
Smiles bloom on their faces, a shared laugh bubbling between them as they gaze into each other's eyes. Silence settles for a moment, warm and comfortable. Then Kate steps closer, her hands finding a gentle resting place on his chest. With a playful smile, she uses his body as leverage, lifting herself on her toes until they're face-to-face. Leaning forward, she plants a soft kiss on his lips. Merig, caught off guard for a delightful moment, returns the kiss instantly, his arms wrapping around her and hands finding their way to her back. The kiss deepens, a silent conversation whispered on their lips, before Kate pulls away, leaving them breathless and gazing into each other's eyes once more. Merig, unable to contain himself any longer, erupts in his familiar, high-pitched maniacal laugh. Instinctively, he throws his hands up to cover his mouth, a sheepish grin replacing his shocked expression. Kate, unable to hold back a giggle at his adorably flustered state, watches as he slowly uncovers his mouth, now sporting a look of both apology and amusement.
(M)I’m so sorry, Kate, I’m so embarrassed by that.
(K)Don’t be sorry, Merig. I told you that you don’t have to be embarrassed about that. I’ll always love that about you.
(M)[bashful] Are you sure? You’ll hear that quite a lot, since I can’t exactly control it.
(K)[giggles] As long as it’s you, Merig, I don’t mind.
(M)That makes me feel a little better about it, then.
(K)That’s good because you should never feel bad about yourself, even the things that you’re embarrassed about.
(M)Thank you, I’ll remember that. Goodnight Kate.
(K)Goodnight, Merig.
Merig cups Kate's cheeks in his hands, leaning in for one last kiss goodbye. He pulls away, lingering with a smile as she turns towards the door. Kate walks towards her front door, pausing to glance back at Merig with a final smile before opening the door and slipping inside. Merig watches until she's safely inside. Their eyes locked until the door closes. Still smiling, he turns and heads back towards his own place. Inside Ashley and Kate's home, Kate stands in her bedroom, changed into her pajamas, and lost in a smile. Ashley walks down the hallway and peeks into the room, catching Kate gazing wistfully lost in her own thoughts.
(A)Hey, you look happy.
(K)I don’t think “happy” fully describes how I’m feeling, Ash.
(A)So I take it your date went great, then.
(K)Oh, it was more than that, it was out of this world, Ash. Words themselves couldn’t describe what I felt tonight. We danced in the sky and all over the city it was so breathtaking to see. And when we danced, I felt as if Merig and I became one, and both of our hearts danced together in harmony. I had no fear as long as I was dancing with him and he was holding on to me.
(A)Oh my god, Kate, that’s so romantic, I’m so glad you both had a good time. Truth is, me and Larry saw you when he was taking me back here, earlier, and I’m sure some of the city did, too. We’ve got night owls in Tara, I’m sure of it, so expect some people to gossip.
(K)They can gossip all they want, Ash, because it’s official between me and Merig. He and I are together, and I’m so happy.
(A)What, Really? I thought you two were already a thing though, especially after you both kissed and everything else you’ve told me.
(K)Me, too, but Merig asked me outright if I wanted to be with him and we had a long talk about it. We also kissed some more when we got back to ground level at the square, and just before I came inside the house. I almost didn’t want the night to end, but I was tired from dancing.
(A)Sounds like a lot of fun, Kate. I’m so happy for you both. Also, how the hell did you two manage to fly all over the city like that?
(K)Oh yeah, Merig mentioned that, he said it was a spell called Sweetheart’s Flight.
(A)Oh I’ve heard of that, you get the ability from some guy on an island. Never been there, but I’ve heard of it and I heard it’s fun.
(K)That’s interesting…also, Merig and I talked, and we want to go to the banquet next weekend like we mentioned earlier. I was going to see if you would want to go, like in the old days.
(A)Hell yeah! I’d love to go. We can all go on a double date or something.
(K)Double date? Are you and Larry together?
(A)Pretty much. He and I talked while you and Merig were on your date. As you know, Larry flirts with me a lot and has asked me out on a date more than once, even before you got here.
(K)Yeah, I remember. I always told you I thought you should give him a chance.
(A)Yeah well, I decided to give him that chance, and I told him the reasons why I was hesitating, just like you were with Merig.
(K)Yeah, both are pretty understandable.
(A)Well, the thing is, I’ve had feelings for Larry for a long time, and as you know, Larry feels the same. He’s been that way even since before you came to live here. It was when I came here, during the time I spent training to be a Royal Alchemist. I spent a lot of time around Larry and Merig, and I spent a lot more time with Larry since he helped me train, and I started developing romantic feelings for him, granted, he already had feelings for me. This entire time I’ve been here, I decided tonight would be the perfect time to tell him the truth about my feelings, since I’ve pretty much come to terms with them. I told him why I was hesitant, and he completely understood, and he said he didn’t mind waiting. He said that he wouldn’t break my heart and a lot of other things. I told him I wanted to be with him and give him a chance, and he was really happy.
(K)Oh my god, Ash, that’s wonderful, I’m so happy for you two! I bet he was happy. It’s been a long time coming for you both.
(A)Yeah, it has. I do love Larry a lot, and he’s always been good to me. And the disappointment I saw on his face when I used to turn him down, broke my heart. When I finally agreed, I saw the look on his face, and he was so happy that I even hinted at the possibility of us going on a date and I realized just how much I love him. I'll also let you in on a secret.
(K)Oh! Tell me, tell me.
(A)…We kissed, too.
(K)[gasp] Holy shit, are you serious?!
(A)I’m dead serious. It was right when he brought me back here, and we stood outside, talking for a while. So here’s what happened.
Ashley flops down onto Kate's bed, sinking into the fluffy comforter. Ashley wastes no time, launching into a detailed account of everything that happened while Kate was out enjoying her date with Merig. (Flashback) The cool autumn evening air nips at their cheeks as Larry walks Ashley home. They reach Ashley and Kate's doorstep, and Ashley turns to Larry, ready to share what's been on her mind.
(A)I’m glad we got the chance to talk about everything. I know I should’ve talked to you sooner, but I just didn’t know what to say.
(L)I’m glad we talked, too. After hearing you explain everything, I actually feel bad that I pestered you all those times. I understand why you were hesitant, and I’m sorry, Ash.
(A)You have nothing to be sorry for, Larry, honestly, I just didn’t quite accept that I had those feelings for you yet. But like I said, I thought about it over these past few weeks, and I felt it was time that I told you how I felt. I honestly feel bad for turning you down all those times. You know I've had my heart broken more than once, and I guess I'm just scared of it happening again.
(L)Hey, you would never have to worry about that with me, I can promise you that. I wouldn't dream of breaking your heart, Ash. You know how I feel about you.
Ashley's breath catches in her throat, leaving her speechless at Larry's words. Larry's gaze softens, a gentle smile playing on his lips. Ashley feels a frown tug at her lips, her eyes welling up. Tears threaten to spill over as she fights to control her voice, which trembles slightly as she manages to speak.
(A)But I feel like I’ve been doing the same thing to you, though. I feel like such a terrible person for it and I feel like I’ve been breaking your heart all this time, Larry. Even after being rejected by me so many times, you still tried. I thought you would hate me for it by now.
(L)You’re not a terrible person. I know what you’ve been through, and I completely understand. Despite everything, I don’t hate you for it…I love you, Ash, I love everything about you and like I said at the pub, I didn’t mind waiting for you. We’re together now and that’s all that matters and I’m not going to dwell on the past. I’ve always loved you and my feelings have never changed since the moment I fell in love with you, nor will my feelings ever change.
(A)I love you too, Larry.
A small, tender smile forms on Larry's face as he gazes at Ashley, tears glistening on her cheeks. Despite the tears, a tiny smile breaks through too, accompanied by a soft laugh. In a surprising move, Larry steps closer and wraps his arms gently around her waist. Before she can react, he pulls her close and dips his head for a kiss. Ashley's eyes widen in surprise, but then slowly flutter shut as she melts into the unexpected embrace, returning the kiss with equal fervor. Larry guides her backwards with ease, leaning her against the wall outside her home, as their kiss deepens. After a moment, he pulls away, searching her eyes even as they still well up. He reaches out and gently thumbs away a tear before returning to kiss her again. This time, the kiss is slower and more tender. Finally, they break apart, faces inches apart, gazes locked. After a beat, they share their goodnights, the air thick with unspoken emotions.
(L)Goodnight, Ash.
(A)Goodnight, Larry.
After a lingering goodbye, Ashley wipes a stray tear and turns towards the house, her heart pounding. Larry watches her go, a wide, cheerful grin splitting his face. Then, with a last glance at the door, he turns and heads home, a secret tucked in his heart. (Flashback ends) Ashley reaches the end of her story. The two women sit in silence on the bed, Kate still processing what she's just heard.
(A)In the back of my mind, I was hoping he’d kiss me. I just didn’t think he’d actually do it. It was a huge surprise for me.
(K)I bet it was. I’m really glad you two talked about it. I’ve always told you, you both would be perfect together, just like you said about Merig and me. Also, Merig opened up to me some more, and all of his fears were rooted because he’s a goblin and wants to be with a human, but he said he eventually stopped caring. I told him I didn’t love him any less, because I don’t care what he is, and I don’t care about what people think, either.
(A)You’ve always been like that, Kate, you never cared about someone’s appearance. It’s all about the good in them.
(K)Exactly, that’s how I was raised, and I told him that I think he looked very handsome, especially with what he wore tonight for our date.
(A)Your parents raised you right, Kate, and I’m glad you two enjoyed your date. I’m sure you’re tired from dancing in the sky.
(K)I am, but I can’t wait for him and me to do it again.
(A)Then I’ll leave you alone for the night. I’m so happy you and Merig are together now.
(K)And I’m happy you and Larry are finally together, too. When is the date, anyway?
(A)[smiles] We’re still talking about it. I’ll definitely let you know.
(K)[smiles] Alright then, I’ll see you in the morning. Goodnight, love you.
(A)Love you, too, goodnight.
Ashley rises from the bed and walks towards the door, exiting Kate's room as they both settle in for the night. Over at Merig's home, he stands on his balcony, gazing up at the stars with a smile. He seems lost in the beauty of the night sky. Larry steps outside onto his own balcony, turning to see Merig and greeting him.
(L)Well, don't you look happy, are you drunk or something?
(M)[chuckles] No, but I had an amazing night with Kate.
(L)I bet you did. Ash and I spotted you two in the sky, dancing. Man, was that a sight to see?
(M)Yeah, we kind of lost ourselves in it. She put all of her trust in me, and I guess we didn’t realize how long we'd danced…an hour, maybe two?
(L)Sounds like a good time. I should try that with Ash.
(M)Why? Did she finally agree to go on a date with you?
(L)Actually yeah, we’re together now.
(M)What, really?! I was just joking but damn, congrats, buddy.
(L)Thanks, we had a long talk while you and Kate were out on your date. We sort of opened up to each other about our feelings, which, you know how long I’ve had feelings for Ash. But she finally told me about hers and she’s finally giving me a chance. We’re still talking about a date together, so we haven’t really figured out when yet.
(M)That’s still great news, Larry. I’ve been waiting for you two to finally get together.
(L)I’ve been waiting, too, and we kinda sealed the deal.
(M)Did you kiss her?
(L)You bet your ass, I did.
(M)Dude, what a coincidence. Kate and I kissed, too. I fibbed and told her I had to kiss her for us to float back down to ground level. She also kissed me just before she went inside her house, and of course, my laugh reared its ugly head again.
(L)[chuckles] But she loves it, right?
(M)She says she does.
(L)Then her opinion is all that matters, remember?
(M)[nods] You’re right, I told her I don’t care what other people think. I only worried that she didn’t want to be with me because I’m not human. But she made it clear that she still loves me, even though I’m a Fomor.
(L)Well, there you go. Her word is gospel, then. When it comes to love, the only person that matters is you and the one you love. That’s it. And if anyone has a problem, they can eat shit. You aren’t with them, you’re with Kate, who absolutely adores you.
(M)And I adore her, too. Thanks, Larry, you helped me find the courage in myself, and I couldn’t be happier with Kate.
(L)No problem, as your best friend, it’s my job to help you find your balls.
(M)[eye roll] Thanks, pal, and congrats to you and Ash. I really am happy for you both.
(L)Thanks, I couldn’t be happier myself. I guess we’re both lucky goblins.
(M)[chuckles] Yeah, I feel lucky.
(L)Me, too.
(M)Oh hey, before I forget, I wanted to ask you something.
(L)Sure, what’s up?
(M)Before the date, we all talked about going to the banquet. Kate and I wanted to go next weekend, and I was going to see if you wanted to go, too. Maybe bring Ash as your date and I can bring Kate as mine.
(L)Yeah, definitely, next weekend sounds good to me.
(M)Me, too, all four of us can go on a double date.
(L)Sounds like a plan. But for now, I’m gonna hit the hay. You get some sleep, you’re love drunk, I can tell.
(M)I feel light as a feather, Larry, I’m content.
(L)[chuckles] I’m going to bed. Goodnight lover boy.
(M)Goodnight, buddy.
Larry disappears back into his home, leaving Merig alone on the balcony. Merig continues to gaze at the stars for a while longer before eventually heading inside for the night, bringing an end to the eventful evening.
