Chapter 3 - Graduation

Chapter 3 - Graduation

The hours slip by as Abri meditates, taking the strong emotions boiling over and slowly pouring them out.

Emotion control

“Alright! Although, that’s the first time I’ve had such a burst of emotion. How much have I changed? Or, am I just realising who I am?” Abri pondered, but she dismissed the matter to make dinner and finished the rest of her daily tasks.

“Have you calmed down?” Jane asked, worry slightly tingeing her voice.

“Yes, I have. I even got “emotion control”. I’ll be sure not to do anything impulsive again.”

“Alright then. Let’s get to learning blacksmithing then.”

“Yes please!”

The weeks quickly flew by, with Abri absorbing knowledge less like a sponge and more like someone faking their ignorance, with instant learning of all necessary techniques.

“Well, I got nothing more to teach you. And here I thought you’d learn for longer than three weeks.”

“Thank you so much. On another note, it’s been a while, so would you like to learn about the System?”

“Right, I forgot about that. Ehh, don’t worry too much about it. If you teach me some of magic and enchanting, I’ll consider that good.”

“Well, I do know Mana Manipulation. Enchantment is outside my knowledge for now. Give me a couple of days, I’ll figure it out.”

“What makes you think it’ll take only that long? Isn’t magic supposed to be a long learning process?”

“Sorta. From what I know, there’s a lot to magic, but the basics are easy to pick up, like manipulating your own body. Besides, I have a Talent that allows me to learn faster.”

“Talent?”

“Basically, the System will awaken individual powers called Talents. One of mine increase learning speed. There are a large variety of Talents, but some are just superpowers. Just straight superpowers.”

“Huh. How do I use the system?”

“To summon it, just kinda think about doing it. There should be five ‘tabs’, one of which is titled help. You can check the rest of it there.”

“Give me a sec…” Jane mumbled, eyes flicking around.

Seeing that Jane was busy, Abri headed over to her desk, and began to experiment with her mana. Twisting the mana, she tried to make a small flame.

“Yes. Step one done. Step two,” Abri grabbed the ring she bought a while ago, “enchanting.”

Focusing the Mana into the ring, she forced a meaning from her mind upon it. It would absorb the mana from the environment, and store it as a separate mana pool.

Enchanting

“Sorry about that, got distracted. What are you doing?”

“I need to correct myself, I can teach you now.”

“... already?”

“Turns out magic is simple. Take mana, and imagine it doing stuff. Kinda imagining it doing stuff.”

“What’s mana?”

Right, you don’t know. Here, I’ll try something,” Abri walked over to Jane, grabbed her hand, and slowly added her own mana. Keeping a mental link to the mana, she sent it searching through Jane, finding a pool within her. Pushing the mana into the pool, she shook it up, like a small cyclone of water.

Hearing a gasp from Jane, Abri opened her eyes and stepped back.

“How does it feel?” Abri asked.

“... weird, but not uncomfortable. This is mana?”

“Yep. Try putting it into a ball above your hand, and make it a ball of, eh, water. It’ll be a bit safer.”

Following directions, a bubble of water appeared.

“Wooh. Then to enchant, I just need to put this into an item and imagine the effects?”

“Yep.”

“Well then. Forgot about it for a bit, but congratulations. You’ve graduated from my apprenticeship. You’re free to come by to use the forge if it’s not in use.”

“Thank you. Time for my greatest work, a good sword!”

“You got the supplies?”

“Yep. Bought it the day we met.”

“Alright. Take it away. Actually, hold on. Time for your final exam, make an excellent sword.”

“But of course. If I graduate, may I come by and use the forge when it’s not in use?”

“We’ll see. First, your exam.”

Warming up her hands, Abri got out her materials and tools. Cutting the end into a handle-suitable section, she got to heating the metal and hitting it into shape. With her strength doubled from levelling and the blacksmithing skill, the metal thickened, alongside the width slowly decreasing. Repeating the heating, hammering, and reheating, the blade transitioned from a long block of metal into a sword. As the blade was being formed, Abri slowly added some mana into it, using the melted metal as a basis to make a powerful enchantment.

Finally getting the sword shaped, she moved onto the bevels. Settling on using a flat grind for durability and ease of resharpening, she ground the blade edge. Coming up to the penultimate step of the blade, the quenching. Carefully heating the blade, she thrust it into oil, stirred, and pulled it back out. Heading back to the forge, she tempered the blade, reaching the stage of finishing touches, as she ground the blade to perfection.

With the blade done, she moved to making the hilt, threading the extension on the blade for attachment of the pommel of the sword. Sliding on the cross guard, she soldered it into place, leaving no gaps. Putting on the handle cut from the wood, she glued it into place before screwing on the pommel.

With the hilt set, she carefully sewed the leather on the handle, finishing the sword. Now was the time for the enchantment. Using the highly filled blade, she told it to have a wider range of temperature acceptance, and have two active abilities, to repair itself and coat its edge with flames.

Satisfied with her work, she cleaned up and took the sword to Jane for the final “test”.

“Somethings a bit strange. Did you enchant it?”

“The only effect that should be active is the higher range of temperature resistance. It does have a couple of active effects, but those shouldn’t be active.”

“Alright. Well, all in all, probably better than something I could make. Congrats on passing.”

“Thank you. Well, I’m going to go make the revival array. Now’s the time for the world to change.”

“You still sound kinda like a supervillain.”

“Perhaps I am. Bwahahaha.”

“Well then. I better get to work. There’s a profit to be made!”

“Goof luck.”

“You too.”

“Nice enchantment.”

Abri packed up her Mana Cube, filled with the 1,000,000 mana, and lunch. Grabbing her sword, she headed out. The forest would do great for the array.

Trekking through the woods, Abri sat in a clearing and prepared the array. Digging a hole with Earth Magic, she set the cube in and grasped the mana within. Pulling it out, she spread it throughout the clearing, and even further. Letting it cover the city, the country, the continent, and the world. With the mana properly spread, she gave it the order to store the souls of all who pass and restore their bodies.

After around an hour, Abri calmed down, and opened her menu to see what happened.
