Season 2: chapter 43 : pag

Pag nodded slowly, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Very well, Lord Adrien, we accept your terms," he announced, his voice ringing with a newfound resolve. He glanced at Darleyn and Eryk, a silent communication passing between them. They, too, seemed satisfied with the arrangement, their expressions reflecting a mixture of relief and anticipation.

Turning back to Lord Adrien, Pag continued, his voice laced with a hint of caution. "However, I must admit that this… entire sequence of events has been rather suspiciously convenient," he stated, his gaze unwavering. "The staged attack, the sudden need for skilled adventurers, your timely arrival… it all seems a bit too orchestrated to be mere coincidence".

He paused, allowing his words to sink in. "While we appreciate the opportunity you've presented us, we would prefer that you be more straightforward with us moving forward," Pag asserted, his voice firm. "We value honesty and transparency, and we believe that a strong partnership is built on mutual trust and understanding."

Lord Adrien listened intently, his expression unreadable. After a moment, a subtle smile played on his lips. "I understand your concerns, Pag," he conceded, his voice low and measured. "And I appreciate your candor. I assure you, my intentions are not malicious, but perhaps… I could have been more forthcoming with you".

He paused, his gaze sweeping over each of them. "The truth is, House Valcrest is facing increasing pressure from our rivals, and we desperately need a victory in this tournament to bolster our reputation," Lord Adrien explained, his voice laced with a hint of desperation. "I apologize if my methods seemed… manipulative, but I assure you, they were born out of necessity, not malice".

Lord Adrien stepped closer, his gaze locking with Pag's. "Moving forward, I promise to be more transparent with you, to share my plans and strategies, and to treat you as valued partners, not mere tools," he vowed, his voice sincere. "I hope that you can accept my apology and that we can move forward with a spirit of mutual trust and respect."

He stepped back, his expression hopeful. "Now then," Lord Adrien said, his voice regaining its formal tone. "Shall we put this matter behind us and begin our preparations for the journey to the Eternal Commonwealth?"

Lord Adrien grasped Pag's hand firmly, a renewed sense of determination in his eyes. "Then let us seal this alliance," he declared, his voice ringing with authority. "From this moment forward, we are partners, bound together by a shared goal: victory in the Eternal Commonwealth".

He released Pag's hand and turned to address Darleyn and Eryk, his voice warm and inviting. "Welcome to House Valcrest, my friends," he said, extending a hand towards them. "I am confident that together, we can achieve great things".

Darleyn and Eryk stepped forward, their expressions shifting from apprehension to enthusiasm, and shook Lord Adrien's hand, formally solidifying their alliance. With the formalities concluded, Lord Adrien clapped his hands together, his gaze sweeping over the group.

"Now then, let us discuss the preparations for our journey," he announced, his voice regaining its formal tone. "We will depart for the Eternal Commonwealth at dawn tomorrow. In the meantime, you will be provided with comfortable accommodations, access to our training facilities, and any equipment you may require".

He gestured towards a nearby servant, who stepped forward with a respectful bow. "This is Elara, she will attend to your needs and answer any questions you may have," Lord Adrien explained, his voice warm and inviting. "Please, do not hesitate to ask for anything you require".

Elara smiled warmly at Pag, Darleyn, and Eryk, her eyes conveying a sense of genuine kindness and concern. "Welcome to House Valcrest," she said, her voice soft and melodious. "I am here to assist you in any way I can. Please, follow me, and I will show you to your quarters".

As Elara led them away, Pag couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, the eyes of unseen forces following their every move. He glanced back at Lord Adrien, who stood there, his expression enigmatic, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. Despite the promises of transparency and trust, Pag knew that they were entering a world of intrigue and deception, where every alliance had a hidden agenda, and every victory came at a price.

As they were guided through the opulent halls of House Valcrest, Pag couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. The tapestries seemed to writhe with hidden figures, their eyes following him.

"Are you certain that Lord Adrien can be trusted?" Darleyn murmured. "This all seems a bit too good to be true".

Pag sighed. "I don't know, Darleyn. But we don't have much of a choice, do we?" he replied. "We need the resources that House Valcrest can provide if we're going to make a name for ourselves in the Eternal Commonwealth".

Eryk nodded, scanning their surroundings. "Besides, we made a deal. We have to see it through, at least for now," he added. "We can always back out later if things get too hairy".

A servant paused before a set of ornate double doors. "Here are your quarters," they announced. The doors opened, revealing a spacious suite with plush furnishings and luxurious amenities, and a table laden with food and drink.

With a final gesture, the servant departed, leaving Pag, Darleyn, and Eryk alone in their accommodations. Pag surveyed the room, his mind racing. He felt manipulated, like a pawn in a dangerous game.

"Well, this is certainly… extravagant," Darleyn said, laced with sarcasm. "I wonder what Lord Adrien expects in return for all of this generosity".

Eryk shrugged, heading towards the table. "Let's not look a gift horse in the mouth," he said. "I'm starving. Besides, a full belly will help us think more clearly".

Pag remained near the entrance. "I still don't trust him," he muttered. "There's something he's not telling us, something he's hiding".

He paused, recalling the staged attack, the convenient offer, and the glimpse into noble politics. It created a sense of unease he couldn't ignore.

"We need to be careful, you two," Pag said, turning to face Darleyn and Eryk. "We don't know what we're getting ourselves into, but we have to be prepared for anything.

Pag approached the table, but instead of indulging in the feast, he circled it slowly. "We need to be smart about this," he said, his gaze sweeping over the spread of food and drink. "This could all be a test, a way to gauge our weaknesses".

Eryk paused in his examination of a jeweled goblet. "A test? What do you mean?"

"Think about it," Pag replied. "Lord Adrien knows we're skilled fighters, but he doesn't know our personalities, our vulnerabilities. This lavish display could be designed to exploit those weaknesses"..

He gestured towards a decanter of wine. "Perhaps the wine is poisoned, or laced with a truth serum. Maybe the food is designed to appeal to specific cravings, to cloud our judgment".

Eryk, who had already taken a bite of a succulent-looking roast, paused, his eyes widening slightly. He swallowed hard, his gaze shifting from the food to Pag. "You think he would go that far?"

"I don't know," Pag admitted. "But I'm not willing to take the risk. We need to be cautious, to observe, to gather information before we let our guard down".

Darleyn, with her geomancer skills, offered a different approach to ensure their safety. "I can check the food. Earth magic can sense impurities, or foreign elements, in things," she said, already stepping closer to the table..

Eryk moved back from the table allowing Darleyn to approach the table. Darleyn placed her hand on the table, closing her eyes, and she focused. After a moment, her brow furrowed. "There is something in the wine and the water. A sleeping draught, but one that also suppresses magic," she stated, her eyes snapping open.

"He wouldn't!" Eryk exclaimed, eyes wide.

"I never trusted him in the first place," Pag muttered under his breath.

Darleyn proceeded to check the other items on the table, her movements methodical and precise. The opulent accommodations, once a symbol of luxury and comfort, now felt like a gilded cage, a potential trap designed to ensnare them.

"The rest of the food is safe, for now," Darleyn said, her voice laced with concern, stepping back from the table.

"We need to be careful, you two," Pag said, turning to face Darleyn and Eryk. "We don't know what we're getting ourselves into, but we have to be prepared for anything".

With a sigh, he moved away from the table, the weight of their decision settling upon his shoulders. The journey in the Eternal Commonwealth was just beginning, and Pag knew that it would test them..
