Chapter 2: The Coral Reef

CHAPTER 2 - THE CORAL REEF

A mermaid swam around from behind Michaelah. The mermaid had long red hair, and bright blue eyes. The mermaid was wearing a pretty pink pearl necklace and white seashell earrings. Her tail started at her waste, right under her belly button, and looked like a dolphin's tail. The beautiful mermaid blew a bubble, and it floated over to Michaelah. She looked at the bubble and then looked at the mermaid. The mermaid shook her head up and down and smiled. Michaelah knew the mermaid was trying to help her. So, Michaelah ate the bubble. And when she bit down and popped the bubble inside her mouth Michaelah could breathe again. There was air in the bubble. Michaelah was not scared anymore.

She did not know that mermaids were real. Up until now, Michaelah thought mermaids were only in fairy tales. But Michaelah was looking straight into the eyes of a real-live mermaid. The mermaid held out her hand and Michaelah grabbed it. Together, the two swam in the water. Now that Michaelah was no longer scared, she took a good look around, and saw that there were many things under the water.

Michaelah was going so fast. She was going faster than she could ever swim.

The mermaid brought Michaelah to a coral reef. A coral reef is a part of the ocean that is made of sea stone, sea plants, and sea creatures, like an underwater city for fish. Michaelah saw one fish that had every color of the rainbow on its scales. Then she saw a starfish that had ten points on it, twice as many points as a starfish normally has. Michaelah then saw a school of fish; a school with classrooms full of little guppies learning and a playground with tiny minnows playing. Michaelah also swam by two sea stones talking to each other, and seaweed with sea-hands waving 'hello' at her. She saw a sea monkey eating a sea banana that he was holding with his tail, and thought, 'what a funny place this is!' Everything was different here, like a cartoon or a dream.

Michaelah saw octopus and squids using their ink to write sea-letters. Sea jockeys were racing sea horses around a seahorse track. Michaelah saw a hundred tiny shrimp having a tiny carnival. There was a tiny Ferris wheel and a tiny rollercoaster. Michaelah saw a sea mom cleaning with a sea sponge. There was a giant blue whale kissing a tiny crawfish. Michaelah saw crabs and lobsters trying on different color shells. And weirdest of all there were three oysters and three clams singing, "Oh mister sand man, bring me a dream, bum, bum, bum, bum ... " at the sandbar.

Michaelah kept holding onto the mermaid's hand as they swam by everything. A couple of bottlenose dolphins were swimming along with them, squeaking, and laughing. An orca swam at them. The orca wrestled with the dolphins, and all swam together beside Michaelah and the Mermaid. Even the sharks were nice. They got really close to Michaelah. But just when Michaelah was starting to get scared, they began to tickle her. They used their fins to tickle her, making Michaelah laugh. And their pointy scary teeth were never seen under the cover of big shiny smiles.

Michaelah saw walruses and sea otters playing baseball with a sea-bat and a sea-ball. Little clownfish were holding jellyfish balloons inside the sea-baseball stadium. There were also sea eels that used their tails as lights to keep the sea-baseball game lit up at night. Michaelah loved baseball and wanted to watch the game. But the mermaid pulled Michaelah up and began to swim to the surface. They swam higher and higher. And before long, Michaelah could not see the coral reef anymore.

She enjoyed looking at everything. She had never been underwater for so long. And never before, had she seen such strange and funny things (like a sea monkey eating a sea banana.) but Michaelah was tired of swimming. And she was glad the mermaid was leading her out of the water.
