Ever since these strangers had arrived that Makim has been doing whatever she could to keep an eye on them. Usually this involved going with her horse south and entering the forest as if she was going to the wildlands, but before getting far she turned around and went back to the place where the strangers came to spy on the city.
After the first day, she decided to enter the city. But since she didn't want to interact with count Amer unless she had to so she rented a room at an inn. She then found a courier and after showing him her seal of authority to make sure he took this job seriously, she told him to go to Kretos city and take a message to the duchess. She requested for 15 experienced knights to be sent to her location explaining she found a situation that needs further investigating and wanted to have backup in case things turned out bad.
The main problem is that she isn't sure whether or not they are Lycans spies. If she gets proof that they are, she will go to Amer and request his help in dealing with them. It's his duty to help in the case, even if he doesn't act like it. But if they are really ancestors, then going to Amer is the biggest mistake she could ever make.
People fight over ancestors artefacts, zealots pay a lot of money to get the artefacts, they believe it's their sacred duty to gather up and protect these artefacts for the ancestors return. But having access to an actual ancestor could make count Amer the most powerful man on the world or he could literally turn the ancestors against the people.
The days that followed their arrival were spent repeating the same routine, go into the city if needed to get supplies and sleep, go back to the forest and observe.
Four days after they arrived there was finally a change in routine, the big man came alone around midday and after observing the city gate he ran southwards.
When she noticed that he was going to pass her current location, she hid, luckily, she hadn't been too close and still had the time to hide without being seen. After he passed she tried to track from a distance, but he was moving too fast, if she moved fast enough to follow him with the horse he would easily realize that he was being followed, so her progress was slow. But when she saw him emerge from the tree line further south, she realized that he was going to the city and in the open he was walking at normal speed, probably not trying to give away his identity.
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
Makim was afraid that somehow they had a plan to deal with guards and since the city mage was dead they were a little more vulnerable.
So, Makim made the decision to go the other way, she went north as fast as she could, making sure to pass as far away from the planted artefact as possible. When she was sure that she wouldn't be noticed she left the forest and into the road that came from the north, then made her way to the city.
Luckily she managed to arrive just after him and stayed in line behind him. When he arrived at the gates, the guard did their job and inspected him, checking if he is not a Lycan spawn, Makim also used this opportunity to get the answer.
After that she was sure he was not a Lycan spawn, she was sure he was an ancestor, the problem was how to approach him. There had to be a reason why they didn't announce themselves to the world.
That day he walked aimlessly throughout main city and side streets, ending up in the agricultural district.
The next day she decided to try to find a way to approach him. That was the moment when she wished Chad was with her, he had such an easy way to simply strike a conversation with strangers like they were old friends, that is would probably have been be easy for him.
She entered high end sword store and decided to strike a conversation with him. It didn't go well, especially after she offered to be his guide. His rejection was so clear that she was so embarrassed that she simply decided to get out of there.
She had to find a way to approach him. The guards think he is a man from the wildlands, she would have thought that word reached count Amer and he would have tried to make contact, but thankfully he hasn't. But it was no reason to be idle. She needed to find another way to approach him, the problem is that simply getting to him and telling him she knows about him could go very wrong.
