As I lock weapons with my opponent, I take a quick glance at my followers to see Rymon and Bully pummeling the remaining guard to the ground. While their summoned three burning men and three rock men crush the enemy summoned undead supported my three summoned Gorgasaurs and Canis four undead. Behind her undead are her three pet Lurgus looking for openings to steal kills. When I look back I see my prey looking at his dying follower too. So I let go of my handle of my sword with my left hand and snap forth to grab his right wrist and use my might to lift his right arm up and then shoved my sword though his chest to turn him into soulmist that has a single soulfire pillar burning within. I grin at the thought of the unwanted present that just about to be delivered.
It was a great fight! The enchantments I decided on prove decisive in battles. Most souls just equip basic armor without enchantments on them, just using the normal magical nature of mithril for protection. If they are lucky they may find one with a basic level one armor enchantment or pay souls for enchantments. As the enchanted equipment I make goes to the higher ranking brothers and sisters. A newly arrived soul like me would be hard press to enchant all their gears at all, so I am feeling kind of glad I choose enchanting to support my construct hobby.
I ended up going farther from home than expected, the new gears made the farming to close to home rather boring. With the memories of my adventure self I decided to farm at the limits he was able to go without the new gears. But the last fight was a bit hairy, as the prey actually had a pair of follower. However, they had just finish a battle when I stumbled on to them and my followers were able to finish off a heavily wounded pet during the first exchange.
Then I let my guards tag team the remaining follower while the infected wounds kept my target from healing. However in my first week of farming I learn quite a few creatures have resistance to disease attacks and given enough time can even cure themselves of infected wounds. This is when I found my new medallion so useful, with such high mana regen, I can sit back and cast spells and never feel like I am running out of mana.
With a forty five maximum bank storage with eleven mana restored at the beginning of each round. I can tap into it freely and burn mana to strengthen the number of added effects I can use per spell. A spell's incantations just defines the spell, burning mana is what gods use to make their spells seem divine.
So this is what if feels to be a demigod, as I use a lightningbolt spell and added effect extra targets and burn all the mana in the bank for 45 extra added effects. First I increase my Long Distance Casting to create a wide area killing field. Then I increase Extra Targets by eight times, since it double the number of targets to two hundred and fifty six targets. Then I increase Extra Targets one more time so I can hit everything twice. Then I use five added effect to affect every element so this attack will go through their weakest resistance. Then put the remain thirty one added effects to boost the spells strength, then I cut loose with the spell.
A hail of thunderbolts shoot forth from the upraise right palm and they come raining down all over the place from the initial short range volley is if a giant ball just rolled over you. Then the second waves arrives as the lightningbolts shot into the heavens come thundering down to strike everything a second time. Just like that, two hundred souls collected and one of them a rank two. My rank two soul limits the number of souls I can collect from one single attack.
I am beginning to realize spell casters are an op classes in the Underworld, so long as they mana bank to burn.
Rymon guards my right his three burning men and Bully on my left with his three rock men while Canis watch our back with her gang of seven had gone out to fetch any loot dropped by the rank two. Overhead my three summoned Gorgasaurs make up my air defense, they are like fat snake creatures with large bat wings. So I take the time to examine the new rank two lizardman soul, it's the first race I collected with swimming combat and for it's racial magic fields are changeling and elementalist. Swimming peaks my interest since he would be useful in this endless marsh zone. I might consider trading the pet Bully for the lizardman. If I trade Bully with his gears I should be able to get a decent rank two soul in exchange.
I so head back home to start leveling up the new follower and add two more magical gems to each piece of gear. The ranking of magical gem boost the spells effectiveness by added extra effect per rank level. My current heal gem spell heals fifty percent of my health of normal damage with the gem bonus. If I upgrade to a level three gem, I would get three added effects to use with the heal spell giving me some room to play with. With three levels of added effects I could boost the heal to seventy percent of normal damage or buy three levels of Extra Target so I can heal up to eight targets. I can even split it up and buy these three added effects at level one, cure poison, cure blindness and extra target encase one day I am poisoned and a follower is blinded.
Smart tactical use of added effects is what all wizards strive to master. Boosting damage potential is considered only for the weak minded. For a true battle mage, finding your opponent elemental weakness is a priority of efficiency. So using multi element spells at first is their way of searching for weaknesses rather than using the normal method of wasting a non damaging action with a divination spell.
I come out of my reverie as my two new selves ask 'what gem enchantment to add?' I quick tell my guards to protect me while I have a telepathic conference with my other selves. If I concentrate I can see what one of them is seeing. It's like a long tunnel vision, but it's a perfect view.
For the swords I watch through the eyes of myself watch another me removed the first gem and install a new rank three gem with a Haste spell in it. As for the second gem we decided on a Shadowstab spell which will allow us to teleport a strike to any target in line of sight. The third gem we put in Additional Strike spell which gives us an two extra moves during an exchange.
For the Shield we upgraded the first gem and decided on Toss and Return spell to allow us to throw the shield and then fly back whether it hits or misses. The third gem we place Barrier Spell which puts a spherical force barrier around us until the end of the exchange with four toughness and four structural health points to destroy. Then I watch myself magical sharpened the edge of the shield to a razor's edge.
Running low on mana we switch places with our other adventuring self and watch my other mana rich self enchant his bow. After of course putting our two cent worth we watch him install the upgraded Multi shot gem and then put in Fireshot spell which will give the arrow elemental fire damage. Then he installs Iceshot spell for the third gem to us a bit more variety in range combat.
A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.
We discover paired accessories like boots, bracers and gloves can only hold one magical gem on each piece. So we can simply upgrade them to rank three gems, having three added effects to play with each spell will be handy.
While I was looking at what I could do with having level three Jewelry, I learn I can also wear up to three pieces of jewelry. Could be any of the following an ear ring, a finger ring, medallion, bracelet or ankle band. I went crafting hall and did a ton of quotas of jewelry to earn extra mats to use for myself.
I crafted a medallion with Magic Resistance enchantment with added effect Poison Resistance. With the second enchantment Mana Regen with added effect Mana Transfer to wearer. Then I install three rank three magical gems enchanted as Mana Banks to draw upon when casting spells, their combine capacity is forty five charges that can recharge itself eleven charges at the beginning of each combat round. Now that I have mana to spare, I don't have to save them for summons anymore. In fact burning mana for extra added effects is going to make sling spells in battle so much entertaining.
Why I don't put spells in these gems? Simple to avoid over mana usage. Clean mana not tied to another enchantment can be naturally absorb without issue. If the mana is tied to another enchantment, the flow of mana is slightly distorted and cause mana fatigue with heavy use. Mana fatigue is a pulsating migraine that last until you can meditate. Basically coaxing the magical knowledge in your mind to wake up and start controlling the mana inside you.
Since I don't like wearing rings I decided on a pair of mithril bracelets an inch wide set with three gems. My left bracelet was enchanted with Swimming Mastery that makes it easier to fight underwater with added effect Water Breathing. The second enchantment was Fast Swimmer to increase my water movement with added effect Deep Water Vision to increase my visual range. The first gem I placed the Summon Underwater Mount spell, the second had Inky Cloud spell, and for the third gem I put the Water Vortex spell.
For my right bracelet I enchanted it with Flying Mastery with added effect Higher Altitude. For the second enchantment I put in Dive Mastery with added effect Lucky Strike for increase critical chances. As with the gems I install the first with Cloud of Acid spell. The second I gave Cloud of Darkness spell. For the third gem I decided on the Heavy Weight spell. Although this spell is great against anyone fleeing, however it has added benefit of making a flyer or swimmer to sink in battle.
I figured I bored you all enough with this twinking hobby of mine, but it had to be done at least once in awhile so you know how involved it can get when you really decide to twink out your gears to the fullest. So let head back to our intrepid pair of quester selves.
I sidestep the charging Garuck pecking beak by ducking right and dashing forward to remove the giant land bird left leg by slicing though ankle joint. It crumbles to the ground and slide towards my three followers who clobber it into soulmist.
Finally, the last of herd of Garucks runs past me and I glance back to see my followers and their summons standing in a wedge formation behind me. That herd was big enough that it took me nearly ten minutes of intense fighting until the herd ran pass my position. My followers and their surviving summons look beat up so we made camp and rest a bit.
Soulbodies may not tire, but their mental conditions deteriorate with too much fighting. It's like your tired but you have a deadline to meet, so you force yourself to work and go on automatic mode. It's kind of like that, they become emotionless ruthless hair triggered killing machines. Some people like to keep their followers like that, while most treat them like servants.
I treat my followers like staff, people who will run things giving me time to do things that interest me more. Sure they may replaceable guards, since I won't hesitate to replace them if I ever get my hands on stronger souls. So for now I give them the opportunity to prove their worth, those who constantly get soulmisted will be the first to go.
Only one avatar at a time can take a quest, so I let my big brother, the odd ball that dresses differently than the rest of us do his thing which leaves me to blindly explore the Wilds. I ended up crossing the border to plunder the next zone of endless hills and grasslands and this zone is said to be twice as big as the endless marshes. Herds of spiritbeast roams the grasslands in an endless search for more of their kind to add to their ranks.
Apparently size does matter, the bigger herds are revered and feared by the smaller herds. Only herd mentality could create such a zone. I climbed a rocky pinnacle to watch the two largest herds strut all over the place forcing the other herds to make way, one from below on the grasslands and the other above as the largest aerial flock does the same.
But then all the flocks hover in place and face one direction behind and to my right, so I glance over and see on a black dot flying through the skies. The flock is so dense they blot out the sky so you cant see through them. I can feel the vibrations of their wings drumming the air that only the insect kind can do. Casting a farsight spell with added effects all put into extra range I see a massive force of Hunari strutting through the air with extreme air of dominance. All the flocks hover in place out of respect for their sky queens that have ruled this sky in this zone for untold ages.
I can now hear the throb of their buzzing wings beat in tune with their queens. All flocks within hearing that buzzing beat hover and pay tribute to the untold number of sky queens in that massive swarm. I look down to see the herds doing the same, standing still and watching that swarm fly past. Even the largest herd stop to pay tribute to a swarm that several dozen times it's size.
I took the opportunity to withdraw back to the borders where the herds are much smaller than those a few day in. The various hordes of creature soon return to normal when that swarm vanish from sight and sound. By then I had traverse a fair distance back towards the border and already back inside border zone.
The ability to replace lost elementals, summons and undead by tapping into the mana banks in everyone's medallions allow me to lightly scout the mid zone of these grasslands. Definitely over my head at the moment so I guess I need to rank up myself and my followers. Then work on a full warband and give my followers their own followers and pets.
I tried summoning mounts, but in the end I rather have battle summons to help in the fighting. Battle summons are temporary creations will will disperse once their duration runs out. So in the end, my current battle summons include four undead, three Gorgasaurs, three Burningfolk and three Rockmen. This gives my warband of seven permanent members thirteen disposable guards.
The Undead was armed from loot that I enchanted to give them a bit more staying power, but reminded her to make sure to pick up the gears when the undead fade away. But only the heavy armor, shield and sword to keep it simple.
This is where I decided to farm for souls, with the plentitude of herds here, it makes for a perfect farm. There are even rank two souls in the larger herds, so I look for a base to operate from. Only to discover seniors brothers and sisters have taken the best locations. Though I did get a strange look from them in my search for a defendable piece of rock, I think they believe I'm too green for this area. Until someone says what I believe "getting soulmisted would be the hard proof he needs to know he don't belong here yet, so leave the newbie alone."
When I finally found a unclaimed piece of rock, it stood about thirty meters high and about forty meters wide. I arrayed my war party into a wedge formation with the that rock behind out. The herd will automatically veer away from the large rocky outcrop leaving a small wedge of space to fight smaller herds.
The entire base of the outcrop surrounded by balconies carved one meter from the ground. Each balcony could fit five medium size warriors or three large warriors. Back of each balcony narrow down to arch that lead to a circular tunnel to connect all the balconies together. There are four ladder carved up to a resting area and then another ladder to the top of the outcrop.
