A few months passed as Watt worked with Ronald.
Ronald was pleased with Watt. Despite being slow to learn, Watt was a hard and diligent worker and never complained.
During this time, Watt was taught how to use the bow, carving wood, and additionally, how to cook.
Watt still didn't have a profession, Ronald did want to teach him the woodcarvers profession. But was reluctant as Watt seemed to enjoy the combat aspect of things.
In the mornings, Watt trained with his bow. He worked with Ronald in the afternoons and when he had free time, he liked to exercise his body.
His exercises consisted of running laps inside the city and punching and kicking a thick wooden log set in the ground in the courtyard.
Occasionally, Ronald gave him tips on improving himself. Watt listened to him intently, which is how he later designed in a corner of the yard a jumble of stout sticks and poles.
It was open enough that you could barely move inside, but the moving parts of it were attached to a series of ropes and heavy weights.
Before he entered it, he would wind the contraption up, and stepping inside quickly the poles would start moving unpredictably. He liked to change the setup every so often, so he wouldn't become used to the way it moved and to stay sharp.
He hated the pain of when he misjudged a step or couldn't find a escape. But he knew a real weapon would hurt him a lot more.
He often spent time inside the setup until he was no longer wincing after each session.
As a result from his training. He learned the stats dexterity and endurance, and a skill related to hand combat due to his kicks and punches.
His strength, agility and dexterity also rose a fair bit and he even had his luck stat increase a few times.
His running laps around the city had people recognizing him, though they only spared him a glance.
As time passed, Watt saw less messages pop up each day as he trained, and the bow became too easy to use as the courtyard wasn't large enough.
Ronald began to feel guilty watching Watt. He knew Watt was approaching the limits of what he could do here, and while he thought that Watt could find new ways to train. He knew it wouldn't be as good as real experience until finally, he reached a decision.
He spent the rest of the day preparing, and went to sleep.
The next morning, Watt was training as Ronald stepped into the courtyard.
"Watt. Come over here"
Watt finished slamming his leg into the post. The post had large dents in the sides where he kicked and a hollow where he punched it.
Standing before Ronald, Watt was dressed simply in a shirt and trousers.
"Its been a while since you joined me" Ronald smiled. Watt nodded in confirmation. Ronald continued, "You have been here for roughly 4 months. And I'm not complaining. But your destiny doesn't lie here"
Watt shook his head "I like it here"
Ronald shook his head. He knew Watt, and knew that Watt wouldn't want to leave.
"That's not it. I'm asking you to leave as I don't want to hold you back."
Watt scrunched up his face. "I don't want to leave"
Ronald blandly spoke "If you don't leave, then I'm going to go broke and die"
Watt was suddenly very worried and looked at him. Ronald struggled to keep his mouth straight and his eyes looking serious.
Finally, Watt nodded and accepted it.
As Watt moved inside, Ronald spoke up "Its impossible for me to sell your things, and I have a few things myself which are impossible to sell. So I'll hand them to you"
The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
Watt sadly nodded as he started packing his stuff. He still used the training bow, but it wasn't his. He had made a few basic bows since then, and had a lot of arrows that he made and used for training. He also had a small purse of coins from working under Ronald, along with other things he gathered during his stay.
Watt finished packing his things and stood inside the workshop waiting for Ronald.
Ronald came out from his room holding a bow wrapped in cloth and a small parcel.
He handed them to Watt as he told him "Open it later when you've left the city"
Watt shook his head.
"I don't want to leave the city. I'll find work somewhere else and earn you money"
Ronald groaned. He knew this was a bad idea.. But he had set himself on this path..
"I don't think it would be a good idea if you stayed around in the city. There's lots of reasons, but you shouldn't visit me for at least a year."
Watt nodded.
"I will send you money"
Ronald smiled. Watt was still trying to help him..
"No need. If you do that, then I will be worried if you are aright and I'll barely be able to survive.."
Watt nodded at last. Accepting the matter.
As Watt started outside. Ronald stopped him.
"A few tips.. First. Make sure you stock up on supplies before you leave. Secondly, don't trust people. Be on your guard. Some people will tell lies and others will try to kill you"
Watt nodded. He already knew to get supplies, but the other tip was handy.
His father had explained that he was supposed to be killing monsters. He'd played a few games before, so he knew what his health meter and such were.
But he didn't know people could kill each other.
During his time with Ronald, he had also learned about his stats. Though he didn't see the need to use them.
Along with that, he finally figured out how to read his stamina and health bars.
Stepping outside reluntantly and standing just outside the gate, he cast a look back towards the place he had begun to call home.
He waved to Ronald. Then started on the road towards the market.
He couldn't afford any of the more expensive gear. So he limited his choices towards food and the basic things he thought he would need.
He actually had a list from Ronald for this.
Afterwards, he made his way to the gates.
Despite his reluctance, the guards didn't spare him a second glance as he stepped outside the walls for the first time.
Fields of grass lay before him with people killing rabbits, an occasional fox and even a wolf.
In the distance a forest loomed, part of the road branched off into it.
He unwrapped the bow that Ronald had given him, and eyed it critically.
Despite Ronald's claims otherwise. This bow looked as if it would sell just fine.
Actually, it looked like one of the best bow's that he had seen Ronald create.
But if he said it wouldn't sell.. Then there must be a flaw with it Watt was missing.
However, it was still better than his current bow.
Watt packed the bow away and looked inside the parcel Ronald had given him.
Inside was another purse of coins, some food and a new set of knives with a whetstone.
Watt smiled. He knew that this was a gift from Ronald.
Watt started walking down the roads towards a field that swarmed with rabbits.
For now, he needs to find his limits.
