2. The change

The sudden transformation left Acid dazed and unfocused. He stumbled forward on his eight legs and nearly fell over. The other Dungeon monsters stared at him with an intense focus as he clumsily shifted about, trying to get his bearings. It was only after slamming himself face first into a wall that he finally started to re-find his balance.

Slowly, over the course of the next few minutes, Acid learned how to move in his changed body. There was more weight to his steps, and everyone carried him much further than they used too. He had to be careful with how he moved, in a different way than before. Obstacles were no longer many Giant steps away, but were now much closer. Too close even.

It wasn't nearly as great as he had imagined it to be. All his life Acid had assumed that moving around would be so much easier as a giant rather than harder. Perhaps, he wondered, it was due to a lack of training. All the others had been Giant all their lives, to them moving at such an extreme size must have come naturally. Getting used to it would just take time.

But, in the midst of him adjusting to the sudden and abrupt changes, he was approached from behind. A dungeon wolf tapped him in order to draw his attention. When the wolf finally had it, it gave Acid a sly grin and gestured for him to follow it. Almost without thought Acid did as was asked of him and followed the wolf.

It led him through the ancient halls of the dungeon's first, and only, floor. They passed over wet and moldy stone, a drainage channel, and finally through a withered old door. Beyond the door was a room bathed in sickly green light. Most interestingly it was occupied by two other wolves and a single giant spider. The monsters greeted Acid in the customary way of all monster kind, complete silence.

Rather than make any kind of sound, they all turned towards the wolf who had led Acid here. The wolf in question seated itself in the center of the room on a mostly destroyed cushion. For a moment, the recently mutated spider decided to wonder where the cushion came from.

It's curiosity, however, was reigned in when the wolf suddenly howled. The room fell into a deeper silence then and they all watched as the head wolf scratched something into the stone floor. It was a simple image with a complicated meaning. A declaration of the highest order: a challenge to become a dungeon boss.

All eyes, again, turned to Acid. The implications were clear, they wanted him to try to become boss of the first, and only, floor of the dungeon. It was an honor that they even considered him worthy and strong enough for the task. It was also a stupid idea. Acid was still adjusting to his body, he wasn't even sure if his mutation had given him any new abilities. For all he knew he could very well be weaker than the average giant spider.

While on the other hand, the current dungeon boss was an actual giant. Larger than even the largest of spider's and hairier than a wolf. Acid couldn't even fathom how they thought him ready for such a task.

With an angry, and spidery, hiss Acid stormed out of the room. He heard other hisses and howls behind him, obvious cries trying to call him back. All of which were ignored. He shut them out and scrambled away as fast as he could. There was something about the whole situation that left a twisted feeling in his gut.

Why would they want him to become the floor boss? It made no sense, they had just met him. Did they think that they could perhaps accrue power through him? Acid had heard tales of how the various factions within the dungeon always warred for power. Was that what this was all about? A play that could get him killed, all over petty territory disputes?

It was, he realized. It made sense based off what he knew about the factions. They were greedy and cruel, considering no plot or scheme to be beneath them. For most factions each monster was just another pawn to be used.

Acid decided at that moment that he would not be used. He would dismantle the system of factions that permeated the dungeon. Tear it down. Which, ironically, would mean that he would have to become the boss of the dungeon's first, and only, floor.
