Chapter 5: Shopping

The situation wasn’t looking great, so he got up and made himself scarce. Getting rid of the aesthetics aspect in his movements, he could harness a little more speed. Limping away furiously in an attempt to run didn’t look exactly charming, but it did the job.

Even after exiting the work area, there wasn’t a soul in the proximity. Lara’s scream must have scared the shit out of all the people from a certain area. Dangerous monsters leaving the Great Wilderness, and roaming around freely, could cause a lot of havoc until they were dealt with. It was a rare occurrence, but not totally impossible.

‘Just what is wrong with her?’ Biff could not figure out the cause of such a behavior. Unfortunately, he couldn’t do anything serious about the situation even if he wanted to.

He was just too weak.

Looking at the bright side of this whole ordeal, he now had that change he was looking for. It wasn’t exactly the perfect outcome, but he was going to take it nonetheless.

‘I guess this is it with working at that place,’ as of this moment, Biff had no intention of returning to that place. Among many other reasons, his secret condition was now exposed. That would certainly cause some negative effects, so he preferred to avoid it.

He went directly home. This time he did not have time to carefully analyze, and enjoy the scenery, the flowers, and all the fancy ornamental street pieces. After finally reaching his place, and closing the door behind him, he let out a big breath of relief. After what happened, his leg pain didn’t seem so horrendous anymore.

“I can do it! Let’s go!”

Biff ate something, did some exercises, and then waited patiently for the day to go away.

The next morning, and after a quick look, everything returned to normal. It was like nothing unusual happened in the first place.

‘I don’t know what happened, or how they did it, but I hope the atmosphere stays peaceful like this.’

Biff followed his usual morning routine. After finishing with that, he got dressed, took some money, and left with the intention of buying himself some decent clothes, and food.

The sun shone brightly, and the warmth one felt from its touch was very comfortable. Putting behind all the negative emotions, Biff walked towards a nearby market.

On his way, he analyzed the clothes of the people that were walking on the streets. There was some diversity, like dresses, skirts, shorts, pants, shirts, jackets and what-not, but what they had in common was the fact that they were built mostly from linen, or leather. There were multiple levels when it came to the quality of the materials and the craft, but usually, it wasn’t too far away from one another. Some people were filthy rich, and dressed accordingly, but that wasn’t too common.

Before he knew it, Biff found himself in front of the market. The whole place was built under a big and tall hall that had no walls, allowing the sun and the wind to pass through, but keeping most of the rain, and the heat of the noon away. Or at least it looked that way to Biff.

The market was pretty big, and had most of the things a normal human would need. Going from one end to another, he saw a great variety of vegetables, grains, fruits, and even some stuff he had no idea what they were exactly. After a long time, he finally made his mind on what to buy.

‘I’ll buy myself the clothes first,’ thought Biff, while proceeding to go to another area of the market.

After arriving, it took him only a short moment to see something that he liked. It was a full set of leather clothes. The leather wasn’t of the best quality, but it was decent nonetheless. Being dyed black, and having some red stripes here and there, it gave off a nice impression.

“Hello sir, how much for these clothes?”

Since he looked more like a beggar, the vendor gave him a skeptical look, but answered calmly nonetheless.

“That would be seventy-five silver,” said the man while stroking his white beard.

Biff felt a twinge in his chest after hearing the price. It was exactly half the wage for one month’s work. For someone like him, who spent a few years diligently gathering money, it was incredibly hard to spend so much, so fast.

The vendor saw his struggle. Almost like being able to read his mind, he added: “The leather from which the clothes were made is very durable. The paint is also not just for show, but adds another layer of protection. If you want to save money, these kinds of clothes are the best; because you can wear them for a very long time. Feel free to probe it, I don’t mind if you decide not to buy it after that.”

Biff paused briefly. What the man said made some sense. If he didn’t like it, or something was wrong with it, he could just refuse to buy it. Furthermore, first impressions were very important. He could not approach certain people, and obtain a lot of things if he was dressed like a beggar.

“That sounds great, thank you!”

The old man gave him the clothes, and showed him the changing cabin. The moment his fingers touched the leather, he could roughly feel that it was something of a decent quality. Taking the clothes, he quickly changed into them. Unlike what he expected, the material felt very comforting when it came in contact with his skin.

Going to a mirror, Biff’s face turned into a very large smile. It was like he instantly transformed into a different person. His genetics were above average, and in addition to his tall physique, he had some nice facial features. That, coupled with some decent clothes, made a huge difference. Black color, with a bit of red suited him very well. The vendor gave an approving nod.

“Not bad lad!” Just from looking at his face, he already knew that the clothes were going to be sold.

Just as he expected, Biff said firmly: “I’ll take them! Thank you!”

He didn’t change back, and instead, quickly threw away his old rags. Waving with his hand at the old man, he left to buy some decent food as well. In just a few minutes, he reaches the food area again.

He bought bread, a little sack of beans, vegetables, and some fruits. Finishing with his shopping, Biff went back towards his place. On the road, he munched on a few fruits, and walked at a leisure pace. Some of the girls that walked nearby gave him a few nice looks, making his mood increase considerably.
