Chapter 4: Traitor

Chapter 4: Traitor

Biff’s heart started to pump more and more blood as he was approaching the group of people. Something important was happening, he could feel it. Each step was harder to make than usual, like some type of unseen heaviness was falling on his shoulders.

Everyone was focused on Lara, their faces betraying eagerness, and a great deal of excitement. His approach didn’t seem like something of importance, so no one gave him attention.

Suddenly, Lara’s piercing gaze shifted upon him. Her deep black eyes were like a bottomless well, exuding wave after wave of constant pressure. Maintaining eye contact was getting increasingly difficult.

Biff saw plenty of beautiful women on the streets, but this person was very different. Lara’s genetics were top-notch when it came to her physical appearance. However, her charm and beauty were even a few levels higher than that. It looked a little too good than what should be possible. The reason for that was quite simple: she was no longer normal.

While he didn’t know much about her, it wasn’t too hard to figure out that her wealth and background were anything but normal. Taking these two factors into consideration, it was crystal clear that she most definitely used a lot of precious resources to improve her body.

Just from the feeling alone, Biff was sure that if Lara wanted, she could slice his body into multiple pieces in just a couple seconds. Keeping eye contact with such a person would often bring more trouble than anything good. Despite knowing that, and despite the fact that it was hard to look at such a person directly in the eyes for more than a few moments; he didn’t turn his head into another direction.

It seemed foolish, but considering the fact that he didn’t feel any animosity, nor could he be a threat to her, then the whole ordeal wasn’t such a big deal this time. After what seemed to be a very long period, Lara looked away.

“Alright everyone, just as we spoke previously, some of you will be working for Lara for a few months. If you hear your name, step forward.” Bart’s crisp voice ruined the special mood. On the other hand, his words were sweet like honey.

Biff froze for a moment. ‘This could be a game changing opportunity!’ While he wasn’t so confident in his chances to be chosen, it wasn’t totally impossible. Since he left early last time, and skipped a day, many details were not known.

Details, however, weren’t too important at this time. What mattered the most was the fact that Lara had a large amount of wealth and status. She surely would pay more than Bart. Furthermore, and more importantly, there would also be some small chances of advancing to a better position. These were just speculations at this point, but the probability of them becoming reality wasn’t zero.

‘Man, this would be so awesome,’ thought Biff. He desperately needed a change in his routine.

“William! Vincent!…”

Bart’s voice pulled him out of his thoughts. A series of names resounded through-out the big hall. Some were to be expected, while some were surprising.

“And lastly, Biff.”

Hearing his name was a very pleasant surprise. ‘If I make it big, I won’t forget about this favor…’ With a beautiful smile, Biff walked forward. Bart’s mug was all of a sudden more pleasant to look at than ever before.

“Wait!”

Biff stopped halfway, and looked back. The person who spoke was Arnold.

“What’s wrong, Arnold?” asked Bart, a little surprised by the interruption.

“Biff is a cripple. He can barely use his right leg. He won’t be able to work properly, you should send me instead of him.” His voice was loud and clear. The echo resounded through-out the whole place.

Everyone was shocked, and stopped briefly. Biff froze in place as well. He could barely believe what he was hearing. “What did you just say?!” a few veins bulged furiously on his neck.

“You can’t work properly with that leg of yours, better not embarrass yourself and let me go in your stead.” Arnold avoided eye contact, and his face was slightly red.

Over these years, Arnold was the person Biff opened up to most. Biff considered him a friend, so hearing such words from him hurt him a lot; especially since they were said at such a time, and with so many people around them.

Disbelief turned to anger, and anger soon turned to disappointment. Stepping to the side, he extended his arm, making a path. “You can have my spot, go on.”

Arnold did not wait a second more, and dashed towards the people that were chosen to work for Lara. He didn’t even spare a glance, and just went past Biff. Seeing this, Biff’s disappointment grew even more. For a moment, he felt like he understood something very important in life.

One of Lara’s bodyguards wanted to intervene and stop this scene. He didn’t want to waste his precious time with such nonsense coming from peasants. Just as he was about to take action, he felt a cold shiver going down his spine. Turning his head, he was met with Lara’s murderous gaze.

Lara was observing with great interest everything that was happening. Being heavily influenced by Biff’s emotions, she seemed to fall into some kind of weird state. However, her guard’s actions disturbed her, pulling her away from something she deemed as vital.

Her current gaze was entirely different from the one she gave Biff earlier. Now, she emanated a huge amount of killing intent that was solely directed at only one person.

Grabbing the guard by the face, she smashed him into the ground, and proceeded to punch him repeatedly in the face. The punches were heavy, and the force used was no joke.

“You little shit!!!” Lara’s face distorted greatly. What she was expressing now was pure anger.

Blood flew everywhere, and in a few moments the guard’s head was no more. The artifact from her shoulders fully extended into a pair of silvery wings. Lara grabbed the corpse with one hand and threw it into the air. In the next second, the cadaver was slashed by her wings into tens of smaller pieces.

The guard was no more.

Lara’s eyes started to turn almost entirely black. Bending her head backwards, she let out a loud scream that could bring terror directly to one’s own soul. If the scene from before was bizarre and unexpected, then what was happening right now was simply pure madness.

Everyone started to run away for their lives like crazy. Biff wanted to run as well, but feeling Lara’s gaze locking upon him, he stopped. He had no chance of out running her.

Lara’s wings suddenly trembled. Biff felt a powerful gust of wind, and in the next second saw a silhouette in front of him, only inches away. It was none other than Lara. From up close, her beauty was even more mesmerizing. However, her entirely black eyes and twisted expression exuded a similar amount of terror as well.

“Aren’t you going to run as well?” Her voice became twisted as well. Similar to hearing two voices at the same time.

Biff gulped.

His life could be forfeited at any second. This was the first time in his life he came so close to death.

“I am a cripple, my ability to run is not that good…” his voice was rather weak, and his face pale.

Hearing his answer, Lara started to laugh like a maniac. Her ghastly laugh could probably scare children to death. Her wings trembled again, and with a powerful gust of wind she flew into the skies, breaking the steel roof of the hall like some kind of wet paper.

She left just like that.

Biff fell on his ass. His beating heart could be heard from afar, and his body wouldn’t stop shaking.

“This is not exactly the change I was looking for…”
