Chapter 7: Friend

Chapter 7: Friend

After creating the fully sapient life I leaned forward to watch them. Physically watch them with my actual eyes. I was aware of everything that happened in my universe, even outside of my "sight" I could still sense where each atom was and where they would go. I knew exactly what was going to happen to that single hydrogen atom floating through space in 100 or 100,000 or even 100,000,000 years from now. What was interesting about the semi-sapient and fully sapient life was that because of their Will, or more specifically their ability to make logical choices, their future wasn't known. Each choice that they made closed and opened numerous possibilities. It was amazing.

Something else that was interesting was death, divinity, and Will. Each atom held a tiny spark of divinity—none of the solitary particles did, just the atoms—and each spark in the atoms that made up a living thing was connected by that living thing's Will. When connected by a Will, the spark of divinity wasn't that atom's spark, it was the Will's spark. But when that living thing died, the Will tried to keep its divinity together but was too weak and that Will vanished and the sparks of divinity became individual again. The tiny amount of extra divinity that the living thing generated in its life dispersed into the surroundings when it died, leaving its corpse's atoms each with a singular spark.

Is it because their Will was too weak? Or was it because the amount of extra divinity that they generated in life wasn't enough? The goblins have about 5 octillion atoms and so they have 5 octillion sparks. If they generated another 5 octillion sparks in life would their weak Will be able to hold on after death as just a form of pure divinity? And humans are fully sapient, their Will is strong already, will their Will hold onto their sparks after death? Will their Will be strong enough to survive death with the small amount of divinity they generated in life or will their Will be strong enough to rip the divinity out of their corpse's atoms leaving the corpse the only atoms in the universe to be spark-less?

I was unsure, but it will be interesting to find out. None of the goblins or fairies or other semi-sapient creatures that died so far had a strong enough Will to maintain a form of divinity yet, and no fully sapient race has died yet, so I'll have to wait. That was fine, I didn't want to think about them dying just yet. I just created them!

Anyways, I turned my attention back to the humans. Only a couple of minutes had passed since I created them so they hadn't moved too far. They were headed north towards the river, staying together while glancing around. Their thoughts were everywhere. Wondering where they were, how they got there, who they were and who the person with them was. Curiously enough, they both seemed to instinctively know that they needed to find shelter and, somehow, they already had some ideas on how to do that.

Both the man and the woman knew that they could build a shelter from trees, but instead of heading south to the forest they headed north where they saw a smaller grove of trees by the river. They consciously chose the option with fewer trees because they recognized that it had easy access to water. So, they were thinking about all their needs and were making plans for their future. Of course, if they were to trek further north, they would reach the mountainous part of their safety circle, which had plenty of trees and even ore deposits.

For now though, their goal was the grove of trees by the river and that was alright with me. There would be plenty of fresh water, fields of grain, and roaming cattle and sheep for them to domesticate. A good start for humanity.

I cleared my throat. It was time to make me some friends!

"Hello Humans, my name is... well, I can't remember... anyways, I created you so I could..."

I trailed off, watching the humans continue their trek towards the river grove.

"... Have some friends."

They didn't respond or react, they just kept walking. They couldn't hear me.

I looked over to the Naga, who were on the same continent as the humans. They were already slithering silently toward a gazelle-like animal drinking from a large oasis. Hunting at the first sign of prey.

Huh... I guess snake instinct mixed in with human instinct. That’ll be interesting.

Most of the possible futures that I can think of showed the naga race to be almost coldly logical species, of course they would still have their emotions, but their focus would be on what is logical.

Anyways...

“Can you hear me?” I said to the naga.

Neither of the naga could.

I turned to the giants in the north. They were picking large fruits off of the surrounding trees. The fruits were large, purple, and shaped like pumpkins. The husk peeled away like a banana to reveal a pure white flesh. To the giants, the fruit was the same size as an apple was to a human.

"Can you hear me?" I asked.

No response, they continued picking fruits and munching happily.

I turned to the harpies. They were merrily flying around, chasing each other through the night sky... they couldn’t hear me either.

The gnomes, already in the business of passionately procreating, couldn't hear me.

The elves, looking up at the stars in wonder, were holding hands. No response from them either.

The beastkins were already building a small lean-to shelter using fallen branches and jungle vines. They couldn't hear me.

Why can't anyone hear me? I mean, I would know if they could hear me and they just chose to ignore me... I can hear all their thoughts after all. Are gods just not able to talk to mortals?... wait.

Suddenly, the reason clicked in my mind.

I can't physically speak to them! Sound doesn't travel through a vacuum! I thought, slapping my forehead. Of course they wouldn't hear me.

I leaned back away from Bri, careful not to block Rapu's orbit, and folded my arms as I pondered.

Maybe I can use my divinity to place my thoughts directly in their minds?... No, that's giving me a bad feeling. I think so much faster than them and my Will is far larger than theirs. I feel like if I send my thoughts into their mind, my thoughts would override theirs, my Will would destroy their Will. I can't even test this, because if I am right... I just can't do that. To take away Free Will is... is absolutely disgusting.

I looked down upon the world filled with life; the beautiful sparks filled with intelligence. Even the smallest degree of intelligence found in the smallest of bacteria was beautiful to me. It was wonderful. Sure, the miniscule Will was pitiful and would disappear upon death, and its divine sparks would dissipate into the surroundings, but that was its life. Its Will.

No, it's better to just find a different way. I can't just create new thoughts in their head either, for the same reason... I guess I can think about this later. For now, I can do what the Fairies are doing.

The Fairies were communicating via a beam of divinity from one mind to another that transmitted feelings and impressions. They had vocal cords, of course, but they have yet to fully develop sapiency and thus no language. They did make adorable little squeaks though... Anyways, using their method of transmitting feelings and impressions didn't infringe on anyone's Will and the one receiving knew that that impression/feeling wasn't really theirs. I wouldn't really be able to talk with anybody, but at least I'll be able to somewhat guide them if they need help.

Using this method, I sent the fairy queen a beam of a feeling of gratitude and an impression that this method of communication was useful. Interestingly enough, this was the same fairy queen I had noticed from before I created the humans. She smiled happily and looked up at where the beam had come from, but she only saw blue skies. Confused, she looked around with a frown, trying to find who had transmitted the feelings to her. None of the other fairies looked like they had been the one that had done it, they were all busy flitting about around the flower fields. Tentatively, she looked back up to the sky where the beam of divinity had come from and then sent her own beam.

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

Of course, the beam faded out after only a hundred feet, not reaching anywhere close to where I was, but I could easily see what she was thinking anyway. I was constantly aware of everything and of all thought, after all. The beam was just necessary to help me communicate with others, not for others to communicate with me.

“Pleased. Confused. Where?” The fairy queen sent.

I chuckled and sent back, “Amused. Happy. Too far above.”

The queen, even more confused now, flew up ten feet and sent, “Confused. No see?”

“Peace. Calm. Above sky.”

Her mind reeled at that thought. Above the sky? She hadn’t thought that that was possible, and yet she could feel the transmission beam coming from the sky... or rather, from beyond it.

“Confused. Fear. Nervous. Fairy? Not Fairy?” She asked.

“Peace. Reassurance. Not Fairy. God.”

She froze, staring up at the sky as she processed what I had just sent. The impression of “God” was too much for her to handle it seemed; she was only able to get that the title was somewhat important.

“Curious. What is God?”

“Unsure. Difficult to explain. Determined. My story. Surrounded by Nothing. Darkness. Lonely. Super lonely. Desire for companionship. Nothing becomes Something. Still alone. Used divinity to create Everything. Light. Created world. Created life. Created fairies. Pure Joy. God means Creator.” At least, I think that’s what being a god means... I have a feeling there’s something else to it though.

As I was sending the impressions, trying to convey my story, the poor fairy’s jaw was dropping further and further with each beam I sent, until she was gaping in astonishment and wonder. A few seconds after I sent the last transmission, she finally came back to herself. She grinned and dove back to the flower field. She flitted about, dancing among the flowers and other fairies, all while transmitting joy, gratitude, and love of life to all the fairies in range and up toward me. All of the other fairies joined in her celebration and danced along with her despite not knowing what caused their queen’s sudden outburst. Eventually, she flew ten feet up again and stared at the sky.

“Gratitude. Gratitude. Gratitude. Life good,” she sent.

And life had been pretty good for the fairies. It has only been a couple years since I had created the fairies, and it had been a relatively easy life for them. Only a handful had died due to accidental run-ins with strange plants that used divinity to defend themselves. Ever since they had found this field of flowers, however, no other fairy had died.

“Pleased. Happy. We are friends?” I asked.

“Happy. Us friends,” she sent, grinning up towards the sky.

I made my first friend!... What do friends do? I’ve never had a friend before... at least not one that I remember. Hmm... I guess friends help each other out, spend time with each other, do fun things together. There’s not really anything I need help with though, and what does she need help with? As she said her life has been good... Oh! Maybe I can give her a name!

Each time I gave something a name, that something underwent a kind of... I wouldn’t call it a change per say, but the name exemplified the characteristics already in the thing. I was worried though. What if I named her after the joy that she radiates? Would she only be able to feel joy? Would she never feel anything else? Sure, joy is a good thing, but to never feel anything else is a tragedy. The other emotions are just as important. No, I should avoid naming people after emotions. I don’t want to inadvertently force someone to feel a certain way.

I started thinking about this little fairy queen and what she was. She was the first queen of the fairies. Fairies weren’t immortal, but they could live up to a thousand years, so she will be the queen for a long time... at least, unless something goes wrong. She was also my first friend! That should definitely be in her name to commemorate the occasion.

Ok, so we got First Fairy Queen. First is prim. Fairy could be fay. Queen... How about I change it to Ruler, which is also true. The fairies all listen to her so she is a ruler. Ruler can be rul. Primfayrul. My First Friend. My is mi, first is prim, and friend could be en. Miprimen. Primfayrul’miprimen.

Pleased with the name, I sent a transmission to her saying, “Happy. Friend. Bestowing name. Primfayrul’miprimen.”

At the same time that I sent the transmission I said, “Let her name be Primfayrul’miprimen.”

As soon as I finished saying the name, she changed. In an instant, and with a burst of divine light, she went from being five inches tall to being five feet tall. Her butterfly-like wings spread wide, displaying the intricate rose patterns, as she caught herself from falling. Her mind sharpened and she became fully sapient. She gasped at the sudden clarity of thought and looked around in amazement.

“Well, that was unexpected,” I said, looking down at what just happened. Why did she get bigger all of a sudden? And she’s completely sapient now... she’s probably even smarter than everybody else right now. Was it really just because I named her? I mean... the sudden burst of divinity that rushed through her when I named her should have just made the named aspects of hers more apparent. Maybe this is just a part of being a fairy? They just get bigger the more divinity they have? It’s been too soon to tell if that is the case, I guess we’ll see. But this will be a problem for... I’ll call her Fay... for Fay. She’s fully sapient, but none of the other fairies are...

“God?” I heard a voice ask, pulling me back into focus. It was Fay. She was hovering above the ground. Her wings gentle flapping, sending giggling fairies flying away only for them to zoom back just to get sent knocked aside again. Other fairies were lounging in her hair or poking at her bare stomach or legs or brea—She’s naked!

The next instant I willed flower-themed clothes into existence onto Fay and onto all the little fairies. I also went ahead and gave them sapience, which for some reason also granted them my language. Sadly, none of the fairies grew big like Fay, but I did notice that they grew a tiny bit because of the small divinity increase that came with the sapience, so my theory was almost certainly correct.

Now... I should probably respond to Fay. She’s so much smarter now, maybe I can try something. Instead of sending a kind of vague impression of what I’m trying to get at, I tried to send a very specific impression of a single word and did that for each word of the sentence.

“Fay. I. Gave. You. A. Name. The. Name. Changed. You. Sharpened. Your. Mind. And. You. Grew. I. Also. Made. The. Other. Fairies. More. Sapient. As. Well. And. Gave. You. Clothes.”

“Fay? Is that the name you gave me? I like it! Thank you, God!” She shouted, twirling and grinning.

Well, I’m glad her personality is still the same...

“Fay. Is. Your. Nickname. Your. Name. Is. Primfayrul’miprimen.”

Her divinity resonated with the name, but that also made her mind blank for a millisecond.

I sighed and just said, “I. Call. You. Fay. Because. We. Are. Friends.”

Fay was about to say something, but she was swarmed by fairies.

“Who’s God?”

“Is he in the sky somewhere?”

“Your name is Fay?”

“Can you give me a name?”

“How did you get so big?”

Fay laughed, “God is the one that created all of us and...” she went on to explain everything to the fairies, but while she was doing that I turned my attention to the others.

Hmm, I think I should give everyone else names as well. They are the first of their species after all... though I can’t really name both the man and the woman the “first” because there are two of them. I shouldn’t give two people the same name, and besides, it doesn’t feel as special if they’re “tied” for first... Oh! I could just name them the father and mother of all their species, that implies that they were the first but also makes them distinct from each other. And it places importance on family which is a big plus in my books.

In order to name everybody I needed to come up with the syllables for father, mother, and one for every race. For father and mother I decided to keep it simple. Father would be fa and mother would be ma. For each of the races I used the first syllable of their race. Humans were hu, giants were gi, gnomes were no, harpies were har, naga were na, and elves were el. But be was already taken for the word beginning, so I used kin for the beastkins.

Should “all” be included in the name? I mean if I just use the father or mother and the race, it would still mean father of humans... this is the second time that I’ve had a name with “all” in its meaning though... Ah, whatever, it’s fine. If I come across “all” again I’ll use it, but it isn’t really necessary here because it’s already kind of implied.

“Ok,” I said, rubbing my hands together, “let’s do this.”

To the human man and woman I said, “Your name is Fahu and your name is Mahu.”

To the giant man and woman I said, “Your name is Fagi and your name is Magi.”

To the gnome man and woman I said, “Your name is Fano and your name is Mano.”

To the harpy man and woman I said, “Your name is Fahar and your name is Mahar.”

To the naga man and woman I said, “Your name is Fana and your name is Mana.”

To the beastkin man and woman I said, “Your name is Fakin and your name Makin.”

To the elf man and woman I said, “Your name is Fael and your name is Mael.”

One after another, as I named them, their divinity rippled as their names settled into them, becoming a part of them. They each ended up with even more divine sparks but no one grew in size like Fay did or the other fairies. There was an interesting change in their reproductive organs though. It was as if the DNA of each sperm and egg was completely scrambled so that each child would be completely different genetically.

Oh... yeah... that could’ve been a problem... didn’t think about that... whoopsy. But it looks like that problem was taken care of... Hmm... I wonder why I only made one pair of each race when I created multiple pairs for the animals and even for the fairies? Was I unconsciously following something that I can’t remember? Oh well, the problem was solved, so no harm no foul. Anyways, let’s see if I can talk to them now.
