David took one last look around his empty room before closing the door and locking it. He had completed his last final earlier that day, and was leaving his dorm, probably for the last time. He had just finished his first year of college.
On his way out, David stopped to say goodbye to Michael – the last of David’s friends still on campus.
Stopping at the door to Michael’s room, David said, “I’m on my way out.”
Michael turned from his packing – he was also leaving, but later that day. He went to David and they bro-hugged.
“See you, man. And hey, if you get Royal Road, text me. We can meet up in game.”
Michael had gotten a capsule and a subscription for Christmas, so he had been playing for a while – using the campus’s capsules during the spring semester, when he could take the time. He had raved about the game’s reality and the immersive world, but stopped when he saw that David was a little envious.
“I really doubt that’ll happen – my parents aren’t really down with the whole gaming thing.”
“Bummer.”
“Yeah. Anyway, I’ll see you next semester.”
“Yeah, see you.”
David walked with the last of his bags down to the car, put them in, and began the long, long drive back home with his dad.?
* * *
David arrived home for the summer from college to discover that, as a present for finishing the first year of college, his parents had bought him a capsule and a summer long subscription to the latest, greatest VRMMORPG. They had also bought one for each of his younger sisters – Kristen and Emily.
They had received theirs a week before, so they were already out of their cities. Fiercely competitive, they decided to start in different cities and compete to see who was better when they met. Kristen, age 17, started in the city of Ohdyr, on the Western Continent and became an archer. Emily, age 15, started in the city of Tamal, on the Southern Continent and became an agile Blade Master. Each of them told David to register them as family, so that they could meet up whenever they were near each other. Beyond that, though, they gave him no advice. There is no love between siblings in a competition. David wouldn’t have taken it even if they had, though – for David wanted to find his own way in Royal Road.
David had always loved video games, especially RPGs, where he could settle into another world and absorb everything he could about it. Plot and story were the top criteria for David - he couldn't stand boring shooters that had no plot development, no characters to feel attached to. So to him, Royal Road - the largest, most real story he could ever imagine - was the ultimate game.
He decided not to tell Michael until he could fend for himself – he didn’t want to drag Michael down.
So excited he could barely breathe, David got into the capsule.

He replied, "Yes"

David saw no reason why he shouldn't just use his own, so he replied "David"
-Select your gender from male, female or neutral
"Male"
— Royal Road has forty-nine races. You may select your race from the primary twenty-nine.
"What races are well-suited for magic use?" David was a huge fan of fantasy novels and he had always envied the nigh miraculous power of magic. Now that he had an opportunity to learn magic in a setting that was almost real life, he would not pass it up.
-Most elves are well-equipped for magic. Among these, high elves are the best.
"I'll be a high elf then."
-You may alter your appearance in any way you wish."
"My appearance is fine"
-Select a city and kingdom in which to start.
"Which city has the largest library? Which has the most advanced Mage’s guild?" The library was necessary for mages to increase their wisdom and intelligence stats in the first four weeks in-game time in which they were trapped in the city. The more advanced the Mage’s guild, the higher the level of the skills that could be taught - although not very influential on the development of mages early on, if he went to an area with only basic Mage’s guilds, he might be saddled with low level spells for a long time.
-The city of Anderalex in the kingdom of Jotunnheim has both the largest library and the most advanced Mage’s guild at this time.
"I'll start in Anderalex, then."
-Welcome to Royal Road..."
Unable to wait through the tutorial - which he had heard was basically useless, David said "Pass."
White light filled his vision, blinding him. When he could see once more, he was in the center of a plaza lined with merchant stalls, filled with all kinds of merchandise. He stood there, just taking it all in.
He snapped out of his reverie when he heard laughter. Two merchants had seen him appear in the flash of light, and were laughing at him as he just stood there. He flushed with embarrassment, realizing that he looked like a total noob. Once they noticed that he had seen them laughing at him, one wandered over, still smiling.
"Hi. Sorry for laughing at you." he said, "You're obviously new to Royal Road. My friend and I shouldn't have laughed at your misfortune."
"Sorry, misfortune? What misfortune?" David asked.
"Oh," the merchant said, and a serious face replaced his smile. "You didn't know."
"Know what?" David asked, with a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach.
"Anderalex is, quite literally, surrounded by high-level monsters. There are a few animals, and some low-level monsters, but after you get a certain distance from the city, the territory is quickly filled by monsters around level 200. It usually wouldn't be such a big deal - but there isn't an in-between stage. There are no monsters with levels between 40 and 200 - you'd have to grind for years on the low levels to reach the point where you can get past the level 200s. Most noobs who make the mistake of choosing this town delete their accounts and start over."
The merchant wandered away.
"Shit" Misfortune didn't begin to describe it. He almost deleted his account right there, but the amount of time he had spent setting up the first one made him attached to it.
Lost in his troubles, David began wandering the city, aimlessly. Without realizing it, he ended up in front of the library - a majestic, three story stone building with an imposing entrance with wide steps and large columns - not unlike a temple. He perked up - maybe he could get around the problem by learning high-level magic - which wasn't tied to level, but to mastery of the elements.
David walked up the steps and through the ornate double doors. The interior was a circle-shaped grand hall, with a large oaken door opposite the entrance, presumably leading to the bookshelves. There was a grand chandelier hung from the high, domed ceiling, with many candles and crystals to reflect the light. The floor was a mosaic, showing the face of Mímir, the god of wisdom, proclaiming that this was a place of knowledge. There was a desk to the right of the door with a man behind it, his face hidden in a book.
David walked up to the desk.
"Hello, I was wondering if you could direct me towards the bookshelves which hold the history books."
The man looked up. "Do you have a library card?" he asked.
"No. Do I need one to browse the collection?"
"Well, yes. Would you like to buy one?"
"Unfortunately, I don't have much money at the moment. How much would it cost?"
"5 gold. I know – most people think it’s ridiculously expensive, but our collection is far more extensive than any other library."
David nearly fainted at his words - five gold was an unimaginable sum for a beginner. To earn that much, he would have to do menial labor for months.
Regaining his composure, he asked, "Is there any other way to get access?"
"You could apply for a job here. We are currently looking for a person to help reshelve books - our reshelving magic is offline right now, undergoing maintenance and no one knows the collections well enough to find the places the books belong. It won't pay much, but you can eat with us and, if you do well, we might keep you on when the system comes back online."
*Ding*
You have been offered the job Temporary Reshelver for the Anderalex Library
Pays 30 coppers per book returned to shelf
If 250 books are returned to their shelves within a month, then you will be offered a promotion
This was perfect - not only could he dodge the library card fee - he would also get a job which would enable him to pay for equipment.
Without hesitation, David replied, "I'll do it."
"Alright, I'll show you the ropes. My name is Dante Vermuth and I’m the Librarian of the Front Desk. Since we're going to be working together, you can just call me Dante. This place is called the Anderalex Library. Right now we're in Mímir hall, the entrance, where I receive returned books. This door leads to a staircase and another door. Beyond that door are some of the books. Up the staircase are two more floors. The second floor is similar to the first floor, but the top floor contains the restricted section, which only full Librarians are allowed to enter. On the bottom two floors, the bookcases are divided into sections. Each of those sections contains a number of books divided by subject into what we call divisions. Alchemy, Geology, Mythology, Zoology, pretty much any subject matter you can imagine is given its own division. However, within the divisions, the books tend to be disorganized. Here's a map of the bottom two floors.
David went back to his desk, and then turned as if he had remembered something.
“Oh, and you can’t get in or out of the building after we close in the evening until we open again just after dawn."
The map he gave David depicted three levels. Looking for where he was at the moment, David realized that in comparison to the rest of the library, Mímir hall looked tiny. David realized that the pay for each book shelved was probably so high because the amount of time it would take for him to get from one end of the library to another would be enormous.
Dante pulled a book out from under the desk, saying, "You should probably start with just one, then come back here for the next one. As time goes on you can probably get around the library more easily, but for now you might just get lost - that's happened before."
With that, David began the process of shelving the library books. He wandered through a virtual maze of tall bookshelves, lit by sunlight streaming through the windows on the walls above the bookshelves and by the occasional floating spheres of blue light. He got lost frequently, and so it took him almost two hours, even with the map, to shelve the first one.
As time went on, however, David got faster and faster. By the end of the day, David had shelved could shelve a book in 30 minutes.
When he returned to the front desk at the end of his first day, Dante looked at him and said "Good work out there, you might just earn your promotion after all. Here's your library card, you can check almost any book out, with a limit of thirty books at a time. Come on, all of us librarians eat together in the kitchens, I’ll introduce you to the others."
Dante lead him to a room with a small table, around which were 4 chairs - one occupied by a man with sandy hair and blue eyes, another by a woman with raven hair and green eyes. Dante sat and waved David to the final chair.
"Everyone, this is David, our temporary reshelver. David, this man is Asimil, our Librarian of Geography, and this is Verle, our Librarian of Languages."
They both greeted him and then they all ate. After Asimil and Verle had left, David asked "Will you introduce me to the others tomorrow?"
David assumed that the rest of the librarians had left for the day, because there was no way 4 people could take care of the whole library all by themselves.
"Others? No, David, this is all of us. So few adventurers of high level stop by the library anymore that we don't really need to have more staff on hand. With so few people coming in, our budget got slashed, and most of the ones who used to work here were forced to retire. We used to have almost a hundred librarians, each in charge of their own section, and many more adventurers out questing to find and return to us with rare and valuable texts. With their retirement, we lost a great deal of knowledge - a great number of books were lost within the library itself - misplaced or uncatalogued. By the time the library recovered, the catalogues recorded half of all that was supposed to be here. At least, that's what my father, the previous Librarian of the Front Desk, told me."
David could see that Dante was trying to shrug it off, but the man was clearly bothered by the fact that the Librarian of the Front Desk, the one in charge of the catalogues, held such shoddy records.
"I might be able to help - I plan to read through as much of the library as I can, during the nights, and I can keep track of books that I read, like a location or something."
Dante's eyes lit up. "Would you? That would be fantastic. I can give you all the pens and paper you need."

Unreliable Catalogues
Dante has asked that you create a more reliable catalogue for the Anderalex Library
Difficulty Level: Variable
Quest Requirements:
A position in the Anderalex Library
Offering to catalogue the library
Quest Rewards:
Dependent on how much of the library is catalogued
David could not see a downside - he was going to be reading the books anyway and it wouldn't be that much trouble to jot down some notes on the books he read. He knew that it would be almost impossible to get to them all without his losing interest, so he thought that he would get through as much of the library as was needed for him to obtain the necessary stats to break through the high-level monsters, then he would head over to the mages guild and become a Mage.
"I accept."
"Fantastic, here's a few pieces of paper and pen - just get the major themes of each book, as well as its name, author and position in the bookshelves."
As Dante left, David took off for the history shelves - he had found them earlier when he returned a book to them.
Starting with the oldest books, David took them to a table in the middle of the division and read his way through the histories of the continent of Versailles, stopping after each book to jot down a few notes on the subject matter.
After he had been reading for a few hours, his hard work paid off - a tone sounded.
Wisdom has increased by 1 point. (+1 WIS)
By dawn, David had catalogued only six books and gained only three stat points - two of Wisdom and one of Intelligence. It was a long road ahead.
* * *
Over the next few real-life days, David established a routine – he would go and eat breakfast with Dante, then shelve books until the end of the day, eat with the librarians and then read and catalogue books in the history section – the far left corner of the first floor. As David got more familiar with the layout of the library, he began to shelve more books at a time, stopping to check his map less often. In this way, he had managed to shelve 60 books by the end of the week.
Occasionally he would log off to eat, but as soon as he could, he was back in the capsule.
In the middle of the second week, David finished reading the first bookshelf in the history section (there were more than fifty such bookshelves in the history section).
Although the history books, filled with powerful mages and mighty warriors, righteous kings and evil overlords, were interesting, he was getting a little bored of reading all the time with no exercise.
He felt like he was fighting a losing battle - with so much reading to do, he felt like he would lose interest in the game before he got to the point where he could escape the city. Nevertheless, he wrote down the last book's information.
As soon as he had finished, a window popped up.

-Although I want to be a Mage, there's little point in going to the guild right now. I wouldn't be able to complete the quest to get the mage class without money, and there’d be no point anyway, because I need to raise my stats even more if I want to get past the . I have to increase my stats even more.
With renewed determination, David returned to his daily routine. As he became accustomed to the layout, he increased the rate at which he was shelving books, until he could shelve more than ten books an hour. At night, his Reading Comprehension skill grew to be very useful, so much that he started to finish a book in an hour, where before it had taken him two or three.
At the end of the month, David's Reading Comprehension skill was at Level 4, 98%. He had finished another two bookshelves, and was working on the third when Dante walked up to him.
"Morning, Dante. I've finished these three shelves, but I'm not too far yet."
"Congratulations. It's been four weeks since you first got here, and you've impressed us with your drive. Here's your pay for the shelving work. You've earned a full-time position, and though we still can't pay you much and I can’t give you a key to the Library until you’re a full Librarian, would you like to be a Junior Librarian?"
You have been offered the job Junior Librarian of the Anderalex Library
Pays 5 gold a month
Can get into any library in Jotunnheim during its open hours without a library card
Tasks are assigned by the Librarian of the Front Desk
"I accept." David had nothing to lose by accepting - he wasn't going to be able to leave the city anyway, and without more money and higher stats, he wasn't going to be able to get the high-level spells he would need to get out of Jotunnheim.
"Great. We don't really have anything that you need to do right now - Librarians generally head up a division and help adventurers who ask for aid in their specialty, but since you don't know enough about any of the divisions yet, you won't really be able to take charge of a division. With that, you might as well spend all your time cataloging now."
"Okay, I'll get back to it. See you later, Dante."
With that, David picked up the next book in the shelf.
An hour later, when he had finished it, a window appeared.
*Ding*
Reading Comprehension has increased by 1
Reading Comprehension is now Level 5
Reading speed and understanding increases
Skills relevant to the text are sometimes learned or increased in proficiency while reading the book
-Wow, this Reading Comprehension Skill is incredible. Not only does it help me raise my stats, but it can also teach me skills. I don't think the skills are going to appear frequently though, so I don't need to worry about the ten skill limit, really. Maybe I should start reading some texts about magic next, though, it might result in some useful abilities.
* * *
David continued to work his way through the history division, pausing only to eat and drink when his satiety levels dropped. Unable to leave the Library during the day (that would mean losing his job), and unable to get out at night without a key, David had nothing to do but read. With his Reading Comprehension skill increasing the pace at which he read, he finished his fourth bookshelf in a day, and the fifth in less time. In another month, David had completed the cataloguing of the history section, all fifty bookshelves.
At the end of the month, David, a classless level one, had a Reading Comprehension skill level of 9, and had gained close to 200 stat points in both Wisdom and in Intelligence. He was ridiculously overpowered now, although still far from the equal of the monsters surrounding Jotunnheim. He had gained no skills while reading the history books. This, he suspected, was due to the fact that none of the skills used in the history books had been described in enough detail for it to register for him.
He went to the Front Desk to hand over the heavy stack of papers that was the catalogue that David had made of the history division. When he handed them over, Dante said,
"Wow, you're finished with the history division already? This is fantastic, now adventurers will come to us looking for information regarding ancient relics and such."
The reputation of the Anderalex library has risen slightly
He continued, saying "Your understanding of the history division has qualified you to receive a promotion to Librarian of History."
*Ding*
You have been promoted to Librarian of History for the Anderalex Library
Pays 6 gold a month
Can get into any library in Jotunnheim without a library card
Can now access the restricted section
Adventurers will come to you for help with finding books relating to their quests
“Here’s your key to the Library now. Your duties consist only of helping the occasional adventurer who wants help with a quest. You can also access the restricted section.”
“What is the restricted section?”
With a serious face, Dante replied, “The restricted section is made up of books containing knowledge considered too dangerous for public disclosure. They are usually journals written by masters of their respective crafts, containing skills and information gathered over their lifetimes that are simultaneously difficult to control and extremely powerful. Much of it could be deadly both to the user and to others in the hands of the untrained.”
“Wow.”
“Yeah. It’s okay for you to read the restricted section and I would appreciate if you would also catalogue it, but it would be a terrible idea for you to attempt anything that they write about.”
"On a lighter note, I haven’t seen any adventurers in here for the entire time – I’ve been here how much work am I going to be doing?"
Dante laughed and said, "You're certainly not going to be swamped with work - adventurers tend to ignore us here at the library. Verle and Asimil only receive about one or two requests a month."
"Okay, then. If you need me, I'll be cataloging the Enchanting division."
"Good luck"
David hoped to learn the Enchanting skill by reading the enchanting books - he thought it would be cool to create magic items.
He was in luck. When he finished the first bookshelf in the small division (there were only four bookshelves total), he received the Enchanting skill.
New Skill: You have learned Enchant

-Success! Although, it is useless until I have things to enchant.
David finished cataloging the enchanting division in four days. When he gave the catalogue to Dante, Dante asked for a favor.
“I know you’re already the Librarian of History, but would you mind also heading the Enchanting division? We can’t pay you anymore, but the responsibilities of your job won’t change all that much.”
“I don’t mind – it’s not like my duties will suddenly become onerous.”
*Ding*
You are now the Librarian of History and Enchanting at the Anderalex Library
The reputation of the Anderalex Library rises slightly
“Alright, I’ll be working on the Alchemy division next.” David said as he left. He still wanted to be a powerful Mage, so he was planning on getting as many skills useful for a magic-based profession as he could until he hit the ten skill limit. Because he was apathetic, David didn’t feel like going to the Mage’s guild to change his class yet, and he wanted to avoid having to do so for as long as he could.

David was tearing through the Alchemy division – much larger than the enchanting division, at ten bookshelves – and was on the third bookshelf when his Reading Comprehension leveled up.
*Ding*
Reading Comprehension has increased to level 10, and become Intermediate level 1

New Skill: You have learned skill, Alchemy
-The alchemy skill will be super useful if I can learn to make mana potions. Will this ability to see content be useful, though?
David picked up the next book and a window appeared.
Book: Potions and Poisons of the Kuldylr area.
Recipes of potions and poisons commonly around the town of Kuldylr, in southern Jotunnheim.
“Well this is useless.”
-I could have known all this just by looking at the title page. Maybe it becomes more detailed later on – it might help with my cataloguing.
He returned to Dante, and he got much the same response. He became the Librarian of History, Enchanting and Alchemy, although he still wasn’t paid any more and no adventurers had shown up yet – it had only been two weeks since he became a full Librarian after all.
David continued working his way through the Library, finishing one division after another. Usually he would pick the next division he would read based on the related skill’s usefulness in a magic profession so he went from Alchemy to Magic Theory.
Magic Theory greatly interested him, even though he didn’t even know if there was a skill that he could learn. According to his reading, mana was present everywhere, and people take it into their bodies when they breathe and store it in an organ found behind the right lung, opposite the heart. Therefore, breathing was important for regaining mana – which was why most magic classes learned the skill Meditate and warriors learned special breathing patterns.
*Ding*
New Skill: You have learned Breathing Patterns

-Interesting. Maybe I can learn other breathing patterns by changing the way I breathe.
David took several deep breaths and let them out slowly.
*Ding*
You have learned a new Breathing Pattern: Deep Breaths
This pattern increases mana regeneration by 30% and reduces the effects of debuffs by 10%, but reduces the Agility stat by 40%
David started taking quick, small breaths – almost hyperventilating
*Ding*
You have learned a new Breathing Pattern: Shallow Breaths
This pattern decreases mana regeneration by 20%, but increases the Agility and Strength stat by 20%
-Hmm, looks like they each have advantages and disadvantages – breathing patterns for warriors aren’t suited for magicians and vice versa.
While still pondering how best to take advantage of this, he heard footsteps, and looked up to see a male elf he did not recognize approached him.
“Hi.” The elf said, ”I was looking for the Librarian of Alchemy, and the man at the front desk said that he was up here. Are you him?”
“Indeed, I am. What can I do for you?” Dante replied courteously, thinking that at long last the time for him to do some actual work had come.
“I’ve been given a quest for the Alchemist’s guild in the capital city of Jotunnheim, Garam, to find a herb unique to this area, called Blue Grass, I was wondering if you could point out a few places it could be.”
“Blue Grass? I think I remember seeing that name in a book. Let me see…” David led the way back to the Alchemy section and searched the shelves until he had found Alchemical Uses for the Herbs of the Anderalex Region. He flipped through the book to the page with Blue Grass on it.
“Yes… Hmm, Blue Grass is said to grow only in heavily forested areas, in small clearings surrounded by a dense thicket of brambles to prevent animals from eating it. I’m not familiar with the lay of the land outside the city, though, so you might wish to consult with Asimil, the Librarian of Geography.”
“I hesitate to ask, but do you know where this Asimil might be at the moment?”
“Well, the Geography division is on the third floor, he might be up there. If he isn’t, then I’m sure Dante would know.” Seeing the elf’s confused smile, he added “The man at the front desk.”
“Thank you so much.” The elf said as he rushed off.
-Was that it? It seemed like relatively little for 5 gold a month. He was rather polite too, considering that he would have to be around level 200 to get here.
He returned to cataloging the Magic Theory Division. He learned that the mana inside the body could be manifested outside of it to form a spell with power reliant on the usage of the mana.
The mana could be used for any number of applications, colloquially called “magics.” These magics are arbitrarily divided by magicians into primary uses – fire magic or water magic or nature magic or holy magic. In reality, all these magics are the same – underneath the surface of the spell, the way mana flows and is applied in a Fireball is no different from in a Healing Hands spell. As such, the divisions between magicians were also arbitrary – a fire mage can learn holy magic if he tries hard enough.
*Ding*
New Skill: You have learned Mana Control
Grants you control over the mana all around you
David didn’t think of it as anything special – he assumed that all mages learned the skill. But it wasn’t, almost all mages had control over specific elements – like Fire Magic Mastery. This was because most mages didn’t bother to read magic theory books if they went to the library at all. They would rather spend their time reading stories or working for cash to pay for spells.
David continued reading. Spells were divided by a number of factors, chief among which was their power. Tiers were restricted according to the level of the mage. Nevertheless, a Tier 1 spell (the lowest tier) could be as devastating as a much higher tier spell in the hands of a mage with high Intelligence.
After he finished the Magic Theory division, David was a little tired of reading for a purpose, so he began tearing through the first floor of the library without paying heed to future uses for the skills he was gaining. In this way, David finished the Geology division, the Geography division, the Languages division, the Zoology division, the Cookbook division, and many others gaining a number of skills and learning how to read and speak many languages, although he didn’t gain the title of Librarian of Geography or Librarian of Languages, because those positions were already filled. With each finished division, the Library gained reputation, and adventurers started to come by more often – once a week rather than once a month. None of these took up much of his time – they often just wanted to be pointed towards the dungeon that contained the goal of their quest.
After another month had passed in this manner, David had finished the first floor completely. At this point he had hit Intermediate 7 in Reading Comprehension. With the increase in the Reading Comprehension skill, the summary of the book that popped up when he touched it had expanded into a detailed analysis.
He had also gained a number of skills – Mineralogy, Auto-mapping, Anatomy, Herbology, and Cooking. With the Cooking skill, he had learned the max number of skills that he was able to learn without a class. This was okay with David, because he had already almost finished the floor by the time he learned it – surprisingly few of the sections had given him a skill, perhaps because the topics of the books – such as Mathematics or Horology – were too theoretical for a practical application.
When he turned in the last catalogue for the first floor, David told Dante that he was going to take the next day off. David had finally decided to go get his class change quest.
