The night sky is so black it looked as if a thick blanket had wrapped around the world. Because of the blackness, there is no sun so there is no heat. You would know how cold it is if you look at the corpse that lay infront of your lawn, or on the street, or in a trash can. They would have no flies flying around them and they would not reek as badly as normal. That probably meant that it is going to be really cold.
If it was cold, it would be easy to come by. All you had to do was go to your neighbor's house and hold up your hands. The house would most probably be on fire. If you were hungry, just climb over your other neighbor's house, grab the nearest sharp knife and stab the youngest child. If you need new clothes, just run to a freshly killed frind of yours and take the clothes off of it. It's quite easy to live there. That is, if you are the meanest and most repulsive human.
It would be very difficult to survive there if you were a notable. Killing your brother is like killing yourself. But if they want to survrive, they have to be... clever. Notables are unlike the Commoners. They are intelligent, agile, sneaky and in every way human.

The first thing i see on the way home is my mother murdering my best friend. Blood soaks her hands and my friend is clutching her bleeding throat, trying the gasp for air. I stand there, under a leafless tree, staring at the dreadful scene. My mother grabs her by the hair and carefully slices off thin sheets of her flesh. My friend's voice echo off the dilapitated buildings and rings in my ears. Her words scar me but i could do nothing.

''Jason!'' She screams, losing her voice. ''Help my brother!''
Of all the people to help, she wants me to help her brother. That sadistic dirtbag who ruined his sister's life. Of all the people to help, why not herself?
''Please!'' she wails, tears cascading down her dirtied and blood soaked face.
I nod, not even sure if she can see it. My mother holds her head between her hands, staring evily at her. My friend continues to sob, tugging at my mother's powerful arms.
''I'm just gonna take this then ta-tah.'' Mother grins.
Then, with one horrifying jerk, my friend's head snaps loudly. I just realise that i was holding my breath, preparing to see another poor life taken away.
''Haha!'' Mother cheers, dropping my friend's body on the cold, damp earth. ''Thast's what you pretty girls get!''
She hurriedly removes my friend's clothes leaving her in her shorts and undershirt. Mother runs away, laughing maniacly. I take a deep breath and walk towards the fresh corpse. Once i am next to her, i kneel down and touch her arm which is no longer straight, but a crooked zigzag from when my mother broke it in several places. Blood oozes out of a jagged gash on her throat. More comes out of her forehead from when my mother bashed it on an rock. The sight causes my throat to tighten painfully and my eyes to flood with tears. I couldn't help her. I am too selfish.
Her body has gone rigid so carrying her body is a bit hard, but i cannot leave her here where Commoners can pilage her body and use her for meat. She does not deserve her fate. I will kill her murderer, i swear it.
