Chapter 180 - Second Thoughts

“Are we really going to do this?”

“If you are worried about your father, then you shouldn’t worry too much. It will be much worse for the family’s name if we return as losers, even though we had the support of the Aquarians after all those negotiations.”

Ulric and Remi returned to their tents while carrying those bottles. It was said that the potion was supposed to at least double all of their parameters, including their health, mana, and stamina regeneration. So, they would be at least two times more effective against the enemies.

Ulric wasn’t convinced… he was certain that the word of the usage of that potion wouldn’t leave the area, no one wanted to be known for using that kind of drug, but he had the feeling that sooner than later, everyone will learn the truth and the shame will be worse.

That wasn’t all. The drug was supposed to have some serious effects aside from making them stronger. It would make them lose their reason against the people that they hated the most after using them. It was said that it completely unlocks any inhibitions that a person might have thanks to their morals.

Ulric truly feared the kind of person he would become under the effects of the drug. Him and Remi had managed to cover for each other while fighting in this war, but it was hard to believe that they would continue to do that… even though they probably won’t need to support each other if they use the drug.

“If we don’t use it, the others will accomplish a lot more than us. We are more skilled than even those ten years older, but taking down the clan leaders is a lot harder than expected. Once we begin to do that, the flow of the battle will fall in our laps.”

“That is very unlikely. Their followers will only get more enraged and fight even more without caring for their lives. Besides, it is a waste of time to think that we should focus on gaining merits in this war. We already learned a lot and got plenty stronger. We just need to use this experience to improve our progress from here on out.”

“Do you think that battles like this happen left and right? We can’t waste this chance. Not to mention, the alliance with the Aquarians that was restored will soon break apart if we don’t achieve our goals and then they will return to destroy our ports and fleet.”

Ulric couldn’t say anything in response… his brother had a point. Part of the reason for the alliance was to free the Great Sea from the pirates that mainly came from this land. Somehow, they were convinced that the pirates were the cause of the disappearance of the Aquarians… even though such a statement came from the former prisoners, it was rather odd. Even more so when the empire granted the heads of the humans involved when they refused so much in the past.

Ulric believed that someone told some allies and probably brainwashed the prisoners somehow, but he would never say that outloud since it would portray the empire in a really bad image.

“The commanders should have expected that something like this could happen and brought a large cargo of those potions in case of emergency. I want to finish this in a single day. I don’t want to get addicted to this. Besides, defeating Regulus after using this more than once won’t satisfy me.”

Ulric didn’t feel that relieved, he just stared at his brother thinking that he at least hadn’t sunk so far to the point that he would think of using such a drug to defeat Regulus… things wouldn’t end just in a defeat either, it would end much worse.

After letting out a sigh, he couldn’t help but start to understand his father’s behavior a bit more. After experiencing shit like this time and time again, it was normal for a person to feel like brooding all the time. At least he was present enough as much as possible in the lives of his children. Considering that he rarely said no to them, it felt like he was trying to make up for something for them.

“I am going to take some time off after all this… this much fighting. While so many of our allies are being killed, it isn’t worth anything.”

Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.

“You should know why all of this started… Thanks to his interference, thousands of our allies died.”

“Regulus wouldn’t have targeted a single person without a reason… if he truly wanted to make an enemy out of us, he would have joined the clans.”

“You keep making excuses for him and that is starting to piss me off.”

“I am just stating facts. Someone here has to keep their head cool. Even the commander is acting weird with all those murmurs of his…”

After that, both of them went silent for a while and rested until they were called. Another army of enemies was marching toward the port town, despite having cannons on their side; the knights couldn’t use them effectively enough to completely destroy the clans. Some warriors could even punch and block the cannonballs entirely. If only they had that oil… things would have been different, but they wouldn’t use those when the Aquarians were nearby.

Before long, the second unit reunited in front of the port town… they only had thirty members left, but at least they had all the other units in the area ready to deploy as well. It looked like some of them also received the potions.

Ulric shook his head when he saw his brother drinking the whole potion at once and then throwing the bottle on the ground. He was really serious about this… he wouldn’t allow himself to return home a coward or a failure.

In the end, Ulric did the same and the others soon followed them… before long, they felt something in their stomach burning, and then heat began to spread around to the rest of their bodies… anger began to boil inside them, alongside a sense of superiority that started to swell within, and an insatiable hunger stirred deep inside…

Before long, everyone unsheathed their weapons and then began to march toward the army that was approaching them. They were outnumbered three to one, so marching without a care in the world or without the use of basic tactics seemed like a very stupid idea.

Before long, they began to run toward their enemies instead. The orcs, goblins and ogres soon realized that something was off… the humans had bloodshot eyes and were shouting like enraged beasts. Still, they weren’t the type to run away from a direct confrontation either. So soon they prepared themselves to receive the humans.

Soon both sides clashed and then the sound of metal colliding and flesh being cut apart began to echo like rain. Remi wasn’t even thinking. He just had this amazing sensation passing through his entire body making him feel like he was invincible.

When the first ogre showed up in front of him, he trusted his spear forward with all his might. The ogre raised his arms to block the attack with a cross guard, but both forearms were pierced by the spear.

Remi pushed the enemy to the side and found it easy to do so, despite the fact that the enemy was several times larger than him. While the ogre was stumbling to the side. Remi kicked him in the face and then pulled his spear before stabbing him in the right eye, making the weapon reach the other side of the skull.

The enemy fell on the ground, but then Remi jumped and then smashed the head of the fallen enemy with his knee… he would have attacked the rest of the body if he hadn’t noticed another ogre approaching him. This one had metallic gloves protecting his fists, but soon they began to attack each other… sparks fell in all directions, but Remi didn’t fall back or was pushed away. He kept fighting with a grin on his face.

Eventually, he stepped forward and then swung down his spear after avoiding a punch. In the next moment, the left arm of the ogre fell on the ground and blood began to gush from the wound. While the ogre was in pain, Remi hit the head of the target with the butt of his spear… he could have finished him off a long time ago with the tip of the weapon, but he wasn’t thinking about the remaining enemies, he was only enjoying the prey in front of him.

Ulric wasn’t in a much different position, but his cautious nature still could be seen even in his fighting style… for one, he avoided the ogres and for other, he chopped off the arms of the enemies first before going for the kill.

His vision was completely blurred and he could only see his allies as shadows facing his real targets… he looked around with his eyes wide open and with the gaze of a predator looking for his next prey.

When he found his next target, he didn’t hesitate in swinging down his sword and then cleaving the arm of the target from the fists down to the elbow. The absolute pain made the orc shout in agony, but soon Ulric beheaded him, ending his suffering.

From the walls of the port town, the commander of that group nodded in satisfaction… everyone had used the potions and that made them become absolute forces of nature. Hundreds of enemies had been disposed of already, and they didn’t lose anyone after several minutes. For the next day, they wouldn’t stop and would keep hunting for enemies no matter what. Now his job was to only control all that rage and ferocity while hoping that the other armies were doing the same.

After ten minutes, the battle was over and then the commander saw the knights using their weapons to destroy the bodies of the enemies around. Still, soon they felt his approach and then felt his will as well somehow and before long, they sensed his orders… like mad dogs that acted like zombies, they began to march to the enemy’s camp. They already knew where their new targets would be found and they couldn’t wait for the next hunt.
