"Oh, I almost forgot to mention that unless otherwise specified, you can report the completion of a quest at any guild branch. Good luck!"
The receptionist encouraged Silva with a broad smile and bowed.
"Thank you very much."
Silva gave a slight bow and left the guild.
Silva had a reason for taking on these quests. He was a fugitive from the Empire and wanted to leave the country as soon as possible. However, there was a problem. Considering that he was being pursued, moving from town to town also posed dangers. That's why he needed an excuse.
An excuse to travel along the roads.
In that sense, a letter delivery job was the perfect cover he could get right now.
He also had a reason for choosing the quest to head east to Melferen. According to the map he saw at the guild, the capital was located towards the southeast of the empire's territory. This meant that traveling north or west from the capital would take a considerable number of days to reach the border.
The southern border was the closest, but if the commander of the pursuers was a clever one, it might be expected and pose a risk.
Considering all these factors, heading east towards the border seemed the safest bet.
Of course, whether this decision was the correct one or not would only become clear once he was on his way...
Silva Schneizel left the guild and headed back to Sea Sound inn, just as he had promised. He wanted to let the landlady know that his registration had gone smoothly.
"Oh, it's you! Did you manage to get registered?"
As Silva was shown to the counter, a glass of water was placed in front of him, and the landlady asked with a pleased expression.
It was just after 5 p.m., and since it was still early for dinner, the restaurant was nearly empty.
"Yes, I'm glad I took your advice."
When Silva said this, a smile spread across the landlady's face.
"Is that so? That's great to hear. I'm glad my advice was helpful. So, what about dinner? It's only been a little while since you had lunch, hasn't it?"
The landlady glanced at the clock on the wall as she asked.
The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
Both enrolling at the guild and opening a bank account had gone more smoothly than anticipated. Even with Silva's impressive physique, he wasn't ready to eat again just over an hour after lunch.
"Hmm... Honestly, I'm still a bit full..."
Silva mumbled as he rubbed his stomach, which still felt heavy from the fried fish he had earlier.
"I figured as much," she nodded in agreement, then looked thoughtfully at Silva's attire. She seemed to have some doubts about his clothing.
"By the way, have you left your belongings at the inn?"
"Huh? No, I haven't..."
"Wait, are you planning to be an adventurer dressed like that? What about your gear? And you don't even have a weapon!"
Most adventurers tend to carry what they wear. It's generally safer to keep their relatively valuable equipment on their person than leave it at an inn, plus it helps them be prepared for unforeseen circumstances. So, it was natural for the landlady to look at him with suspicion.
Silva glanced down at himself. He was wearing a shirt and pants with a cloak over them a perfectly ordinary outfit. Well, for a town resident, at least.
(I see… I intended to go bare handed, but that was a mistake… And then there's the issue of gear… It's only about half a day to the next town, so I didn't think I needed to prepare for camping out... But it might be better to prepare after all...)
"Ah, I was planning to check out some weapons later. As for gear, I didn't have much to begin with, and the guild said that the beginner quests are mostly near town, so I thought I'd be fine for now..."
The landlady sighed but looked somewhat understanding.
"Well, you're new at this, so it's not surprising you'd think that way."
"Is that a bad idea?"
At Silva's words, the landlady spoke with a mix of exasperation and concern.
"Adventuring is dangerous work, you know? Do you know what the most common cause of death is for adventurers and mercenaries?"
"What is it?"
"Being caught off guard and killed by weaker enemies... Sure, an I rank quest isn't too difficult. Even a woman or child could handle some of them. But you never know what could happen on an adventure. You must prepare for the worst if you don't want to die..."
Silva pondered her words.
(I was still thinking like I was back in modern time… That's right! I don't know this world at all. With pursuers after me and the unknown dangers here... What she says makes sense...)
"I see thank you. I guess I wasn't mentally prepared enough."
Silva sincerely thanked the landlady. It was quite helpful to have a friend point out your shortcomings from their own perspective.
"Oh, that's fine! Our place serves set meals for the locals during the day, but at night, it becomes a tavern for mercenaries and adventurers. Because of that, I've seen a lot of adventurers... Some of them went off saying they were going on an adventure and never came back. When I asked why, they thought it was close by and didn't bring any antidotes, or they forgot to replenish their magic potions... It's so heartbreaking..."
She murmured softly, wiping away the tears that appeared with her apron. She had seen many adventurers come and go. Her expression made it clear that her advice was based on experience and genuine concern. Silva decided to heed her advice and prepare properly.
(I don't know anything about this place. So, I should follow the advice given... This isn't Earth, after all.)
"Alright, I still have time, so I'll go get prepared first and come back for dinner later."
The landlady's face brightened at Silva's words.
"Is that so? Yes, that would be for the best! Do you know where the stores are? The magic item shop is past the guild on the main street. You can buy potions there. The weapon smith is just out of this place, turn right and keep going. If you tell the shopkeeper that the landlady of Sea Sound inn sent you, he'll take good care of you."
