CHAPTER 464
"Hello, this is St. Peter's Hospital. Yeah, I'd like to report a criminal case," Leigh blurted, attracting everyone's attention. She ignored the looks everyone was giving her and told the cops about the whole case.
A moment of shock later, Yelena snapped out of it and pounced at Leigh. Hysterically, she shouted, "What have you done? I'll kill you!"
Just when she was about to reach Leigh, Lucas extended his leg and tripped her. Yelena fell to the floor face-first.
Leigh retreated with her phone in hand, answering the cops' questions patiently. A while later, she hung up and announced, "They're sending some officers over on the double."
And everyone stared at one another.
Goddammit. Lucas huddled closer to Leigh and whispered, "That was none of your business. You seriously just made things so much worse for yourself." This had nothing to do with us. They can bash their heads open for all we care, but she just had to step in. Now, everyone's going to target her.
"This is my business." She tucked her phone away and packed her stuff. "Remember our firm's mission. We punish the evil and help the underprivileged. I'm an ally of justice, so I will never allow any dealings of the wicked to happen, not on my watch. Break the law and do the time. Am I right?"
"Yeah, yeah." Lucas shot her a look. "I'll assign a bodyguard for you." Leigh's gonna get her *ss kicked if she doesn't have a bodyguard. She gets on everyone's nerves too easily.
"You're worried about me." She slung her medical kit over her shoulder and grinned. "Have you fallen for me?"
"I just don't want anything to happen to you. Madeline and Sebastian are getting married. I don't want her to get distracted."
"Yeah, keep talking." She flicked his cheek and whistled. "I'm going to make you mine."
Can she quit it? He took a deep breath and took the medical kit off her shoulder. "Dr. Shefford, can you please act more ladylike?"
"Someone's offended." She smirked. "Why don't you slap me? That'll make me more ladylike."
"I don't slap women."
"Well, what if I were a lady you didn't like, and I touched your face?"
The ladies I don't like won't even have the chance to touch me, but I can't tell her that or she's going to be really smug.
Yelena was still recovering from the fall. She felt like everything around her was spinning, and her body was throbbing. She only managed to get up after some time.
She was as pale as a ghost, and she pounced on Yelena. "Why did you do that? This is a family affair. This is none of your business! Why did you do that?"
"Huh?" Leigh looked at her innocently. "I thought you didn't want your son to kneel anymore. Thought you wanted to do time, so I called the cops. See? Now your son doesn't have to beg anyone for help anymore."
Yelena opened her mouth, but she couldn't even say a word. Slowly, she looked at her son.
Chester plopped down on the ground with blank eyes.
She scrambled over to him and held him in her embrace. Through sobs, she said, "I'm sorry, Chester. I never wanted this. I'm sorry."
Not only did she fail to help him, but she made his life worse. Everyone would laugh at him because his mother was a convict. No longer could he hold his head high. This is all my fault. If I had thought of my son more, I wouldn't have gotten myself into this mess. Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g
Chester said nothing as his mother held him and cried. Like a dead robot, he sat there motionless. The moment someone called the cops for this kind of case, there was no way to drop it. His mother would be charged with intentional tort and get sent to jail.
His mother might be a criminal, but she loved him. She cared for him and gave him everything she had. He could never spit on her for what she did. It was his wish to help her, but things had spiraled out of control.
He took a deep breath and held her arm, then stared into her eyes. "Don't worry, Mom. I'll get the best lawyer for you. If you are imprisoned, I'll visit you. I'll wait for you."
Yelena shivered, her cries getting louder. "I'm sorry, son. I'm sorry."
One mistake. One mistake, and she dragged the people she loved into this mess. If she could turn back time, she would make a different choice. Agony shredded her heart into little pieces, piercing her soul.
The cops arrived on the scene a moment later. Once they got the gist of the case, they took Yelena away.
A sigh escaped Clayton's lips, and he patted Chester's shoulder. "You're a good kid, but I'm sending you abroad." The boys have a wall between them now. The best choice is to separate them.
The suggestion was met with no resistance. Chester nodded. "Harvey, I'm sorry. I—"
"This is her fault. Her crime," Harvey said. "Not yours. She has paid the price for her crime. You don't need to apologize for her actions."
Tears welled up in Chester's eyes as he looked at his brother.
He could never understand why his mother did that. Harvey had been nothing but loving to him. He was his childhood playmate. He was a handsome boy and a top student, and everyone loved him. He was Chester's pride. Harvey loved him, protected him, and gave him everything he wanted. Even after tragedy struck, he never envied Chester for taking over. Instead, he taught him how to manage the company in the hopes he could replace him as Clayton's successor.
He couldn't understand why his mother would hurt someone as kind as Harvey. They could have been brothers for life. He could have someone to protect him forever, but after what Yelena did, they could
never go back to how they were. Just the thought of that tortured him. He hung his head low and said a tearful sorry before he ran off into the distance.
