Chapter 272

CHAPTER 272

"Mom…" Brian looked at Belle in disbelief, thinking his mother had gone completely insane. My mother must be out of her mind, or she wouldn't treat me like that. After all, he couldn't believe that his mother, who used to love and feel proud of him, would say something so mean to put him down.

"Enough with your nonsense! I don't want to hear a single word from you anymore!" Belle waved her hand and added, "There is one thing you're right about; I'm getting tired of all this. If you don't want to give me a heart attack, get your wife here and do as I say. That way, things between us can still end on a good note."

While Brian puckered his lips and struggled to speak, Mack snarled at him, feeling annoyed with what he heard from Belle. "What are you waiting for?! Get Rachael here right now!"

In the meantime, Belle was seen with a bitter look on her wrinkled face, barely getting a hold of herself from the overwhelming anger that was taking a toll on her health. On the other hand, Mack couldn't help but feel worried for his subordinate. If anything ever happens to his own mother here, Brian is going to be condemned and criticized for a long time.

After all, while Mack was Brian's superior and mentor, his words carried so much weight that they sounded compelling to the latter. Therefore, Brian had no choice but to listen to Mack's words, whereupon he reached for his phone and gave Rachael a call, telling the latter to come and meet him.

An hour later, Rachael arrived and knocked on the door before she came in. When Brian saw her, he felt his anger surging through him so overwhelmingly that he wanted to slap the woman. However, he closed his eyes and did his best to suppress his anger, calming himself down. With a decent-looking outfit and makeup on her face, the lady smiled and politely greeted Mack, "Mr. Graham."

Meanwhile, Mack nodded in response with a darkened look on his face. At that moment, he was disgusted with Rachael for what she had done, thinking Brian must have entrusted her with the money to be transferred to Belle even though his subordinate didn't say so himself.

After all, a lot of them who worked in the research institute had hometowns far away, so they had no choice but to entrust their families with their soulmates. Brian's surprised expression didn't seem to be fake when he saw the bank book. In other words, it wasn't his idea to transfer only two thousand to his mother and son. Instead, it was Rachael's idea.

Although Mack wasn't into fashion brands, he could tell that Rachael's fancy outfit was probably worth a lot.

While Rachael's fancy outfit became an obvious contrast with Belle's ordinary-looking attire, she walked in and only greeted Mack, making it seem as though her mother-in-law, Belle, wasn't around. Is she really Mrs. Carter's daughter-in-law? Her attitude makes her seem more like the mother-in-law instead.

As a father himself, Mack knew raising a child was no easy task. In fact, he was aware that Brian's father had passed away when he was a child. Therefore, he could relate to Belle's difficulty in raising two sons all by herself.

At the same time, he also felt sorry for her because of her disappointing son. After all, Brian only had eyes for his wife ever since they got married. Furthermore, Belle had only ever seen her daughter-in- law once, but she never had the chance to meet her grandchildren.

Is this what any normal human would do? I guess I should be grateful that my son is not like her, or I

would probably react like Mrs. Carter and drive him away from home harshly.

Since he disapproved of Rachael's actions, Mack wasn't naturally happy with her. Both Mack and Rachael's fathers were once senior and junior, he used to treat her as if she was his little sister. Therefore, when Rachael noticed the sudden change in Mack's attitude, she looked at Brian in confusion.

On the other hand, Brian reacted with a disgusted expression on his face, feeling a strong sense of loathsomeness within him about the lady's good looks that he used to find attractive. Deep down, he couldn't deny the love he once deeply had for her, or he wouldn't have married her.

Now that he had his eyes fixed upon her face, he couldn't help but feel disgusted about it. After all, he couldn't believe that her good looks were just a front for her wicked heart. I trusted her promises that she would take good care of everything in our family, but what did she do in the end?

At the thought of that, Brian tossed the bank book into his wife's hands angrily.

Stunned by her husband's outrageous reaction, Rachael asked while flipping open the bank book, "What's wrong with you? Why are you so worked up?"

After skimming through those few pages, she stammered anxiously while saying, "W-What's the meaning of this, Brian?" holds © this.

"What's the meaning of this?" Brian was exasperated. "After all the money I gave you and told you to transfer to my mom, you only gave her two thousand a month?! Does that amount of money seem enough to make ends meet for you?"

"Two thousand is more than enough, isn't it?" Rachael knitted her eyebrows and added, "Well, I asked around not long ago and was told that people from a rural place like your hometown only made about two to three thousand per month. Thus, I've been transferring Mom an average person's salary every month, so how is that not enough?"

"What kind of nonsense is that?" Brian snapped at his wife. "My mom is unemployed, and she is in poor health, not to mention the fact that she still has to raise Alex. Tell me, how is two thousand going to be enough for my mother to sustain her livelihood?"

"It's not like I have a choice here," answered Rachael bitterly. She continued to say, "Look, Brian. Larry and Lucy aren't exactly in good health either. I'm jobless as well, and it'd be burdensome for you to feed all of us here. So, I just didn't think we had enough to give Mom."

The lady then turned her attention to Belle and said remorsefully, "Mom, we had to go in and out of the hospital back when Larry and Lucy were in much poorer health. With so many bills to pay, I have to admit we didn't give you as much money as we should have. However, now that Larry and Lucy are older, their health has improved, so I promise we'll transfer more money to you. Is that alright, Mom?"

"Don't call me that. I'm not your mom." Belle glared at Rachael and said coldly, "You're a rich family's daughter who belongs in Dusktown, but I'm just a peasant from the rural village. Who am I to be your Mom, eh?! Anyway, stop beating around the bush and show me how much fortune Brian and you have. After that, you can decide how much you want to give me and Alex, provided you still have a conscience. However, if you don't have one and intend to keep all the money, I suppose we'll bring this matter to the court's attention and let the judge decide what to do!"

"What's wrong with you, Mom? Why are you talking to me like that?" Rachael looked at Belle in surprise and asked bitterly, "What have I done to be treated so harshly by you? Tell me; I'll be sure to

change and do better. In fact, I deserve some credit for bearing a son and a daughter for Brian, not to mention the money I transfer to you every month without fail. So, how does your accusation sound fair to me?"

"You want to talk about fairness now, eh?" Belle chuckled coldly and rose from her seat, seizing Rachael's wrist before she opened the door and dragged her outside. In the meantime, a few other workers were gossiping and standing at the end of the corridor when they saw what happened.

As they noticed the old lady grasping Rachael's wrist and stomping off out of the director's office, they immediately came closer to investigate the commotion out of curiosity. On the other hand, Belle held Rachael's wrist tightly and dragged her to the bystanders around her.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I'm Brian Carter's mother, as well as Rachael Vasquez's mother-in-law. Right now, I'd like to tell everyone about my situation and implore you all to be the judge of it. My son had a wife named Yuri Vickers before he married Rachael. We were poor people who lived in the mountains. Back then, Brian was entering his senior high school years, but I couldn't afford the fees at all. Fortunately, Yuri paid all of Brian's tuition fees with her prize money, which was the reason he managed to continue his study into his senior high school years…"
