third step

Simon Dawn

Pain. Pain. Pain. Ecstasy?

I’m in so much pain but why, do I feel good. Something, something is changing. Am I dying? Maybe it’s the adrenaline kicking in? No this is something more. I can feel energy flowing out of me. At first the energy travelled within my blood, I could feel it stretch my blood vessels, it seeped into every muscle, digging deeper until it energized my bones and then I felt my arm grow back. It was like going from a full tank of gas to zero after starting your engine. I felt almost all of my entire energy supply be consumed as the new arm was being rebuilt. So this is what having power feels like? With tears streaming down my face I smiled.

When the energy reached my eyes suddenly the world lit up again. It was no more pitch black. The first thing I saw shocked me to the core.

I whispered “father?” he came to save me? He cared? There was a feeling of pride safety I had never felt before filling me. As I got up to join my father he began to kneel and then transformed into Laureline.

“That makes more sense” I grumbled to myself as reality set in. I looked up and noticed Jason had begun a chant for a powerful summoning spell, energy in the air seemed to be congregating in front of him causing the air to distort and forming a rift of light. It felt as though time had slowed down but I knew I was just processing everything faster. Hmm something feels different, I noticed that in addition to all my five senses there was something new. a sixth sense is the only way I could describe it and it allowed me to see a transparent aura which seemed to cover each of the individuals around me. It was as if everyone had their own unique aura tailor made for themself. That’s when I saw that Jason’s aura wasn’t as tranquil and form fitted as everyone else’s aura. It twisted and turned as if under duress. Something’s wrong, I know it but I don’t understand what the problem is.

Actually now that I think about it this all seems wrong. Jason tried to kill me without an explanation. All he said was “you can blame your daddy for this”. Father no Argent; he must have set this all up. I’m angry at him but his plan did work. I have power now. Who cares if I almost died to achieve it?

Important things first, I need to stop Jason and help Laureline. The first friend he’s ever had.as I walk towards her I notice my body feels lighter and stronger than before. I place man hand on my shoulder and look down into Laureline's eyes. I’m happy she was willing to save me and now I will use my power to protect her.

I didn’t know what to say in such an awkward situation. I mean she was crying! This was the first time she had cried in front of me ever. She has always been strong willed, defiant and comical never this...vulnerable.so I decided to try something new, that’s right technically I’m a new person more than human so why not reinvent myself or at least try to. I remember my grandfather would always try to cheer me up whenever he saw I was in a depressing mood after I returned from a training session with father. Yes let’s cheer her up.

I looked Laureline in the eyes and said “stop crying and man up. We have a crazy douchebag to kill” I almost cringed at such a textbook line from heroes digest but decided to smirk instead.

She smiled and said “Don’t let whatever power you think you got get to your head!” good the light banter seemed to have lifted her mood.

She continued “plus if I’m not mistaken it was you screaming your head off while crying like a baby just a minute ago”

I scratched the back of my head. Wow isn’t it a bit too soon to be mentioning my traumatic experience as part of a joke. Hmm I’m sure this is when I reply with a joke, something light hearted ,what’s all over the news these days…oh yeah America has a new powered leader, I think he is scientist master manipulator in the cyber arts class nine.

“Yah, he did take me down faster than Donald trump can tweet fake news”

She said “what was that?”

I replied “I thought I could try making a joke”

She chuckled “don’t you suck at it”

As we made our way to Jason who had just finished summoning his sword I couldn’t help but regret trying to be funny.

Vague's point of view

“Argent is going to be pleased his experiment worked. I didn’t think the boy had it in him.” Vague mused to himself while waiting for the second round of the fight to begin

Simon and Laureline made their way towards Jason who was holding on to a bastard sword made of light. They seemed a bit hesitant as every step they took reeked of caution.

“The girl surprised me wen after transforming into the boss but she had no skill whatsoever. probably a class six or seven after all the limitations I witnessed ”he continued thinking “but the boy, who would have thought he would turn out to be a spiritualist just like his grandfather, I wonder if they have the same abilities?”

At this moment Simon charged towards Jason with the pace of an Olympic sprinter. Laureline was followed his lead and ran as well, although she seemed to be slower and the sweat visible on her forehead showing that she was fatigued.

Jason began swinging his sword wildly in random arcs towards his opponent’s direction distorting the air around him with heat and energy. Whenever he would swing a complete an arc of a certain length the sword would form an arc of light that shot forward at terrifying speeds. Although when moving each arc was silent when released from the sword a formidable crack similar to when lightning strikes could be heard. Laureline dived to the ground and scrambled behind a nearby pillar, many students who were captivated by the fight where forced to retreat or risk being collateral damage. Whenever the arcs of light would come into contact with a solid object a visible charred scar would form.

“It seems my puppet had a lot more potential than I thought, that sword is dangerous but seems to be rapidly draining his energy with each swing.” Vague analysed Jason’s attacks.

Simon was dodging every arc with meticulous efficiency and minimal wasted movement. A true demonstration of years of martial arts discipline and balance between mind and body.

“Left, right, lef- no he actually feigned right “ Vague whistled at the acrobatics being displayed in front of him. “He definitely has his grandfather’s ability of psychic energy physiology but to what extent?”

“I knew I wasn’t wrong when I noticed he scanned the auras in the surrounding area. Let me see to what extent he can use his abilities”

Simon continued dodging while approaching Jason, using walls and pillars as leverage to perform flips.

Jason began to panic and charged towards Simon who then took advantage of his opponent’s mistake by closing the distance between the two them. It was then that Jason visibly smiled and Simon knew he had fallen into a trap.

A cube of light formed around the both of them and begun radiating unbearable heat. Simon kneeled in pain and shouted. Jason’s armour seemed to be protecting him from all harm.

Vague considered jumping in to stop the fight but decided against it “if he wants to be Argent then this much shouldn’t be able to kill him”

Suddenly Naomi screamed for Jason to stop. Jason looked up and grimaced when he saw the look of horror on his lovers face. He immediately stopped what he was doing.

“What’s wrong baby this is what you wanted right” Jason asked desperately seeking approval

That’s when a second Naomi shouted from behind him “that’s not me you idiot”

Jason remembered that he had made sure to keep Naomi behind him throughout the fight, and this new Naomi was bleeding on the same spot his light arrow hit the Laureline when she was argent

Simon lunged at Jason with a left punch which was easily parried by Jason. Simon then threw a badly placed punch with no leverage with his right hand; Jason let the punch hit leaving his armour to take the damage while he swung his sword at Simon’s neck.

What happened shocked everybody watching the fight excluding vague. Simons poorly placed punch sent Jason flying through the air completely shattering his armour and ribcage. Jason bounced five times on the floor like a ragdoll before his momentum stopped.

Simon could only stare at his right fist with a confused expression which turned into childlike glee.

Vague began to leave the scene “shit the enforcers are going to make a killing of us today, with a dead student who isn’t one of ours the total sum of bribes will reach into the tens of millions” he spit on the floor in mock disgust but actually felt joy that another of argent children has risen.

Simon Dawn

Ok calm down breath, you’ve been waiting for this all your life. Raw insurmountable power, ok not insurmountable but power none the less. I’ve taken my first step what now?

As I was lost in thought Laureline approached with rage in her eyes “what did you do!” she pulled back her fist and hit me in the face as hard as she could, hard enough I fell flat on my back.

“We won the fight! What’s wrong with you?” I shouted back rubbing my jaw. I was so confused why isn’t she happy.

“YOU KILLED HIM!” she shouted tears forming in her eyes.

Why is she crying over something so petty, he tried to kill me and I responded in self-defence. It should only be a bad thing if the opponent is an innocent right? Just like that time in the alley. Simons brow furrowed as he remembered the sin he had to bear for the rest of his life, killing an unarmed innocent.

“Calm down we don’t know if he’s dead yet, my clan has many scientists and sorcerers who can heal, I’ll just call request traveller to bring them here. Now that I have awakened all of them are just a call away”

AS Simon shared his plan to heal Jason he noticed Laureline had begun to visibly relax. ‘Of course she would it’s a good plan ‘Simon thought.

At that moment as if to throw fuel on the flame Simon had almost finished putting out Naomi wailed beside Jason’s body “he’s dead! Why, why, why!”

Before Simon could make his was to the office to call his clan for help the Enforcers showed up.

They wore all white armour with transparent head gear. They appeared out of nowhere literally. Simon thought to himself ‘they must have had a traveller and therefore could have arrived at any given time. So my father really did pay them off’ all of Simons doubts had been confirmed.

Instead of checking to see if they could help Jason the Enforcers had instead begun to take witness testimonies from the few students foolish enough to stay until the end of the fight.

Laureline lost her cool and started screaming for them to save Jason. The leader of the travellers gave a straight forward reply “little girl, we don’t have any healers with us and our traveller needs to wait an hour thirty minutes between jumps” after giving such an obvious lie he turned around and continued with witness testimonies. The rest of the Enforcers stopped anyone from leaving the area.

Simon could not help but feel distraught with how Laureline had treated him. He turned to her and said “we are the ones in the right here. Cheer up” he said thinking Laureline was worried about punishment from the enforcers.

Laureline realised that the enforcers where as corrupt as the clans and there were no real heroes. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t be one. She just had to save people one soul at a time starting with the one that she hadn’t realised was so warped. Simons.
